Wilmer & The Dukes ‘Get It’ / ‘Give Me One More Chance’ (Action (red/yellow swirl) / UK / 1968 / VG+) £20

( Incredibly well-preserved copy of this now 45 year old record — both sides received heavy rotation on the then-fledgling Northern Soul scene at clubs like The Twisted Wheel, The Catacombs etc etc right back in the day — one of the best label designs evah… )

Nino Tempo & 5th. Ave. Sax ‘Sister James’ (A&M / UK / 1973 / M-) £30

( Hugely influential / indemand instrumental which has been enjoying a real resurgence in popoularity on the NS lately — was ENORMOUS on the ‘scene back in the day — I’ve NEVER had / seen a UK copy before — a quite bizarre record in many ways and God only knows they’ve spun some weird shit on that ’scene down the years, eh? Lovely copy — practically unplayed — just a bit dusty….reminds me a LOT of The Glitter Band ‘Makes You Blind’ actually… )

The Moments ‘Nine Times’ (All Platinum / UK / 1976 / M-) £8

( Heavy-pressed, UK copy… )

Betty Cee ‘Lovesick’ (Al Turn / USA / 1980s / M-) £40

( Stunning Modern Soul dancer from right back in the early days of the Modern scene… )

Razzy ‘I Hate Hate’ (Aquarian / USA / 1974 / M-) £15

( Simply a classic… )

Major Lance ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ / ‘Follow The Leader’ (Atlantic (red) / UK / 1969 / M-) £25

( Uplayed copy of this peaktime Windy City NS double-sider from ‘The Major’ — simply a Black Music legend…. )

Sons Of Robin Stone ‘Got To Get You Back’ (Atlantic / UK / 1974 / M-) £25

( Unplayed big ‘A’ demo copy of this ever-indemand, ever-popular NS seventies soul dancer — sounds amazing even to this day — irresistible….my first-ever demo copy — MUST be rare… )

Errol Dixon ‘Heavy Shuffle’ / ‘Gloria’ (Blue Beat / UK / 1966 / VG) £75

( Currently HUGE on the Ska / R&B / Popcorn scenes and recently topped £150 on the evil one for a lesser copy than this…..one for the Mods too — stunning 45 with THE best organ lick on the whole damned List….minor, minor background interference, most dealers would grade this VG+ with confidence…contact me for a clip… )

Norman Connors ‘Once I’ve Been There’ (Buddah / USA / 1975 / M-) £8

( Unplayed copy… )

Leon Haywood ‘I Wanna Thank You’ / ‘I Was Sent To Love You’ (Capitol / UK / 1970 / M-)£20

( Immaculate copy — 2 outstanding sides….both sides tried and trusted Northern Soul at it’s very finest…. )

Hari Paris ‘You Hit My Love’ (Cardaja / USA / 1986 / M-) £15

( Was SO massive back in the day — outstanding Modern Soul dancer — on an even rarer WD copy here too — love this… )

James Nixon & Past, Present, Future ‘Boogie Bones’ (Chess / USA / 1974 / M-) £20

( New one one me? Killer Funky-R&B with a strong dash of Gospel sensibility from JN and his gang — heavy, heavy side at a very fair price — heavily JB-influenced…immaculate copy here… )

Lennie Hibbert ‘Village Soul’ (Coxsone / Jamaica / 1970s / VG) £20

( I’m no expert on the many vagries of JA issues but I’d hazard a guess that this is a late-70s press — ok? Stunning Reggae version of Johnny Lytle’s immaculate Jazz Jam ‘The Village Caller’…some background rattle but plays lie a dream all things considered…. )

Fruit ‘Say It’ / ‘If You Feel It Say Yeah’ (Cypress / USA / 1978 / M-) £60

( Massive Soulful Boogie double-sider which WILL rise in price as soon as the last few available copies dry up — just totally irresistible, both sides — I DEFY you to sit still when this drops….ya want ‘Cosmic Soul’…? Look no further….unplayed — would have been HUGE on the Modern Soul scene back in the day, trust me………. )

Yvonne Fair ‘Straighten Up’ / ‘Say Yeah Yeah’ (Dade / USA / 1960s / M-) £100

( Massively indemand currently — ALL of this lady’s early JB-produced sides are stunning — dig in…! Just “off the clock” R&B….going H-U-G-E ON THE Popcorn scene too… )

Nat Kendrick & The Swans ‘Wobble Wobble pts 1 & 2’ (Dade / USA / 1960s / M-) £20

( Another killa Club double-sider from Nat K and his Swans — immaculate copy again… )

( Used to be a cheapie — not no more — evergreen Modern Soul dancer from the dawn of the scene…unplayed copy… )

Steve Bassett ‘No Good For Her’ (Ease / USA / 1977 / M-) £20

( Unplayed copy of this gorgeous Modern Soul midpacer which is also loved by the 2 Step guys too — TUNE!! Reminds me a bit / lot of Charme’s ‘Georgie Porgie’ with vox from Luther Vandross — so, so good…. )

Jerry Washington ‘Let Me Get Close To You’ / ‘Set Your Soul On Fire’ (Excello / USA / 1974 / M-) £15

( Unplayed copy of this hard core, Deep Funk double-sider in correct custom sleeve — raw power…. )

Clement Bushay ‘Sha-La-La-La-Lee’ / ‘No Matter What You Do’ (Explosion / UK / 1973 / VG) £20

( New one on me? Topside is a (well done) Rocksteady cover version of The Small Faces tune — Clement could hold a tune… flip is a more ‘recognisable’ Rocksteady riddim with ‘pressed piano’ and some heartfelt vox from Clement — great double-sider and one of the best / rarest on this immaculate old label….lotsa scuffs but a heavy pressing so the effect is minimal… )

The Floaters ‘Take One Step At A Time’ (Fee / USA / 1976 / Ex+) £20

( Excellent uptempo Northern Soul dancer with great synths and a pounding rhythm section from the same band who went on to hit pay dirt soon after with the cheese-laden, astrological chart-ridden ‘Float On’ worldwide smash — but — forget that bilge and dig into this — a rather wonderful dancer which bangs hard — actually reminds me a lot of Hokis Pokis ‘Nowhere’ and I believe was a biggie for a while at both the Casino AND The Blackpool Mecca? Tune…cheesy flip…the shape of things to come? )

Larry Houston ‘Let’s Spend Some Time Together’ (HFMP / USA / 1983 / M-) £20

( Believe me — this was an anthem for we Modern Soul fans as a new release — when it slowed down at the end, it was just a huge opportunity for everybody to just clap thunderously together for a few bars — wonderful memories — OG, first press half-red, half-white label copy here too — bargain…. )

The Impressions ‘It’s All Right’ / ‘You’ll Want Me Back’ (HMV / UK / 1963 / VG+) £15

The Impressions ‘You Must Believe Me’ / ‘See The Real Me’ (HMV / UK / 1964 / VG+) £15

The Impressions ‘I Need You’ / ‘Never Could You Be’ (HMV / UK / 1965 / UK / VG+) £15

( Okay, so — above we have a triptych of some of THE finest black sounds EVER laid down — agreed? All have received heavy rotation on the NS scene down the years and all 3 will always have a special place in my heart…I didn’t name my youngest son after the Gentle Genius for nothing, ya know…;-)

Curtis Reed ‘Exit 23’ / ‘Inst’ (Hoshii / USA / 1985 / M-) £15

( Another one that was massive when first released — great dancer that also found favour with 2 Step fans — Expansion released it as a 12” but it’s waaaay better as a 7” in my book — stunning copy too… )

Sandra Richardson ‘Stay Here With Me’ / ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ (Inter-Soul / USA / 1974 / M-) £15

( great sides from a huge talent — was a massive tune for Dr Bob Jones back in the 80s / 90s — both sides sound great now — one slightly more uptempo that the other but both still dancefloor fillers — just some storage dust here which I’ll clean before shipping — otherwise I believe this to be pretty much unplayed….OG first press on orange label, ok? )

The Quickest Way Out ‘Hello Stranger’ (Karen / USA / 1970s / Ex+) £25

( One of my fave versions of this much-covered classic — wonderful grooves and tremendous harmonies from these people — I’ve seen this one hit £75 on NS lists, believe me — but not here…flip ‘Tick Tock Baby’ also has lotsa fans on the Funk scene, believe me…top percussion / conga break midway in…a few minor scuiffs here and there — minimal… )

James Brown / Bobby Byrd ‘Fight Against Drug Abuse’ (King / USA / 1960s / M-) £40

( Immaculate WD promo copy of this HUGE JB piece — JB and BB get a side each to preach about the evils of narcotics — all to a killer backdrop of funky riffing and excerpts from some of these two mega star’s biggest tunes of the (late-60s) period…monster piece… )

Wendy Lynn ‘I Can Remember’ / ‘Try Me’ (King / USA / 1960S / M-)

£100

( Unplayed copy of this currently HUGE Northern Soul / R&B indemander — stunning dancer on topside, gorgeous slowie on flip — JB yet again…MONSTER… )

Carolyn Blakey ‘Man Came Down From The Mountain’ / ‘Tomorrow’s Child’ (King / USA / 1969 / Ex) £50

( Few minor scuffs on this — minimal — 2 top, top sides here — both in the currently hugely popular R&B / Soul Xover style with Gospel undertones and both work wonders on the dancefloor — nice break on topside too for the Funk / B-Boys….rare one, trust me…. )

William Patton ‘Don’t Be So Mean’ / ‘It Hurts Me’ (King / USA / 1960s / M-) £75

( Unplayed copy of this outstanding double-sider — topside is stunning, high-octane, dancefloor-friendly NS / R&B while the flip is a sublime little midtempo groover — wonderful disc and YET more respect to James Brown from Mark Rez on this List… )

( Immaculate OG USA pressed copy of this Funky R&B biggie… )

The Determinations ‘Bing Bong’ / ‘Girl, Girl, Girl’ (King / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £150

( Four to the floor, old school, right in the groove Northern Soul from JB on the topside — certified as one of THE rarest on the label and definitely my first-ever copy — a total stunner — wonderful slowie on flip too — what a double-sider — tiny edge warp which d n a p in any way… )

Johnny Dean ‘Don’t Disconnect My Heart’ / ‘Can You Break It’ (Magic / USA / 1980s / M-)£25

( Tuff one — my first-ever copy — I remember when Voices had a few copies but I missed it — tremendous double-sider — ‘Can You Break It’ is a great Modern dancer — almost has an Electro feel while ‘Don’t Disconnect…’ is a gorgeous slowie…again, just slightly dusty but 99% unplayed….)

Maxine Brown ‘I Can’t Get Along With You’ / ‘Reason To Believe’ (Major Minor / UK / 1970 / Ex+) £25

( Stamped Demo copy of this exquisite Maxine B double-sider — great dancer on topside — stunning — gorgeous weepie on flip — remarkably good double-sider and exceedingly rare on UK press….wonderful copy too… )

Barbara Acklin ‘Am I The Same Girl (Soulful Strut)’ (MCA / UK / 1968 / VG) £8

( Alltime classic ‘girlie’ Windy City soul — lotsa scuffs / marks but plays clean — trust me…. )

Prince Harold ‘Baby, You’ve Got Me’ / ‘Forget About Me’ (Mercury / UK / 1966 / Ex) £10

( Nice and clean UK press for this much-loved NS double-sider…. )

The Velours ‘I’m Gonna Change’ (MGM / UK / 1967 / M-) £30

( Hard UK press for this HUGE Northern Soul oldie from waaaay back in the day….nice floater on the flip too entitled ‘Don’t Pity Me’ which is NOT a version of Sue Lynne before anybody asks, okay? Wonderful shape here — appears unplayed…also done by Frankie Valli later on down the line… )

Classy Magic ‘Move To Fast’ (Moods Production / USA / 1988 / M-) £45

( Unplayed copy of this currently HUGE indemander — how do I start to describe this? Pure Modern Soul / Boogie with some of THE fattest slap basslines on the block and a joyous male/female vocal interplay — oh boy! Trust me, this is just special — would nice up ANY dance — stone, stone MINTER….just realised what it reminds me of, Leroy Hutson’s ‘Blackberry Jam’ and my regulars will know how much I LURVE that sorta sound………. )

Vicki Anderson ‘I Can’t Let You Go pts 1 & 2’ (New Breed / USA / 1960s / M-) £50

( I honestly NEVER knew Vicki had recorded on New Breed till this one rolled in — totally, totally brilliant 45 and Vicki’s voice sounds absolutely magnificent…actually reminds me a little bit of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins ‘I Put A Spell On You’ — same kinda tempo / arrangement — totally, totally outstanding production from JB…. )

Hank Ballard ‘Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go’ / ‘If You’d Forgive Me’ (Parlophone / UK / 1960 / VG) £20

( Dinked middle and a few scuffs but pretty damned nice otherwise — SUCH a hard UK release….wonderful Popcorn / R&B…decent flip too…. )

The Young Delegation ‘I’ll Keep Holdin’ On’ (Peace International / USA / 1982 / M-) £30

( Rare one! J.R Bailey ‘Heaven On Earth’ / ‘After Hours’ (Toy / USA / 1972 / M-) £8

( I personally think this man’s outstanding LP on MAM is actually even better than Sam Dees ‘The Show Must Go On’ cos pound-for-pound and track-for-track, the quality is waaaaay better — and — these 2 tracks here are, simply put, possibly THE best 2 tracks on that amazing LP — 100% unplayed and completely virginal copy here….
