( Tough UK big ‘A’ demo for this killer Northern oldie double-sider….unplayed… )

Howard Johnson ‘So Fine’ / ‘Keepin’ Love New’ (A&M / UK / 1982 / M-) £5

( Unplayed big ‘A’ demo copy of this sizzling Kashif-produced double-sider…both sides were absolutely MASSIVE s new releases at venues like Morecambe Pier, Warrington Parr Hall, Parkers etc etc  — sweetly in it’s correct custom sleeve too…a stunner… )

Archie Bell & The Drells ‘Love Will Rain On You’ (Atlantic / USA / 1968 / M-) £2

( Quality all the way... )

Paul Kelly ‘Chills & Fever’ (Atlantic / UK / 1973 / Ex+) £4

( Great version — second only to Tom Jones’s in my estimation — 1970s press of the 60s first issue…

Joe Tex ‘If Sugar Was As Sweet As You’ (Atlantic (black) / UK / 1966 / VG+) £2

( Few scuffs — rollocking R&B from an expert… )

King Curtis ‘Memphis Soul Stew’ (Atlantic (red) / UK / 1967 / M-) £4

( Looks unplayed to me? No review required here, surely? )

Glen Washington ‘The Voice Of The Father’ / ‘Version’ (Attack / UK / 1976 / M-) £5

( Unplayed copy of this much-loved Roots cut — version is baaaad bwoy…. )

Black Soul ‘Black Soul Music’ (long/short) (Beam / USA / 1976 / M-) £4

( Unusual Disco-Funk-Afro jam with a pounding backbeat, bubbling percussion and some rasping horns — reminds me a little bit of an uptempo version of Disco Dub Band ‘For The Lover Of Money’ — nice… )

Owen & Millie & The City Slickers Orchestra ‘Sit And Cry’ / ‘Do You Know’ (Blue Beat / UK / 1962 / VG) £5

( Beautiful, beautiful duet between Owen (Gray) and Millie (Small) on topside and a raucous, horn-drenched R&B / Popcorn / Ska belter on the flip… )

Higgs and Wilson ‘When You Tell Me Baby’ / ‘Manny, Oh’ (Blue Beat / UK / 1964 / VG) £25

( Stunning Jamaican R&B / Jump Up double-sider — massively indemand…my first-ever copy… )

( Unplayed copy of this high quality Deep Soul / harmony 7”… )

( Cool demo copy of this decent Soul / Funk double-sider… )

Pat Upton ‘Hold Back The Sun’ (CBS / UK / 1971 / VG+) £2

( Worst artist’s name of all time? Not far off…big ‘A’ demo of this excellent UK ‘beat ballad’ (now-forgotten tag, it seems) which I know has seen some Northern action down the years? Many scuffs / marks but plays really, really well… )

Tony Clarke ‘Ghetto Man’ / ‘Love Power’ (Chicory / USA / 1970 / M-) £25

( Currently massively indemand Roger Spotts production Deep Funk double-sider, immaculate copy here, everything TC touched turned to gold……..!! Did the guy ever lay down a bad track…? )

Charlie Byrd ‘Work Song’ (Columbia / USA / 1960s / VG+) £5

( I don’t think there’s such a thing as a bad version of this song, is there? I mean — how could you cock it up? Cracking version from old warhorse CB here, guitar-led obviously, and right on the money — lovely WDJ coy here — some scuffs but would be most other dealer’s Ex all day… )

Mr. Bloe ‘Sinful’ / ‘Groovin’ With Mr Bloe’ (DJM / UK / 1970 / VG+) £2

( Classic Wigan inst that was also used on like a million 70s ad campaigns…nice copy… )

Glen Miller ‘Where Is The Love’ / ‘Funky Broadway’ (Doctor Bird / UK / 1967) £75

( Now — before anybody gets too excited, I’ve left the grade off this one cos I need to verbally explain it to y’all…’W I T L’ is only G, kids — it is well and truly mullah’d…looks like it has been played with a bad stylus and is covered with big marks — it plays thru with +4 weighted on the Technics but pops and clicks as it works it’s way through — fugging gutted…however, on the plus side, ‘Funky Broadway’ (my preferred side) on the flip is a strong VG/+, plays with minimal crackle and — again — would be an instant VG+ for most dealers…dinked middle… )

Rocky Mizell and Sugarock ‘The Music’s Alright’ (Drive / USA / 1976 / M-) £8

( From the rare / indemand LP — nifty little Disco beater that I feel would go down well if mixed in with stuff like Hokis Pokis ‘Nowhere’ and Crown Heights Affair ‘Dreamin A Dream’ — get me? )

Stanley Mitchell ‘Get It Baby’ / ‘Quit Twistin’ My Arm’ (Dynamo / USA / 1960s / M-) £15

( Should anybody ever ask you “what is THE ‘quintessential’ sound of Detroit Northern Soul?” — just play them this and then refuse to answer any more questions cos this one side of music says more than 10 000 words every could…70s press of a 60s original…unplayed…diff B side — also needs your love… )

Billy Butler ‘Right Track’ / ‘Can’t Live Without Her’ (Epic / UK / 1974 / M-) £8

( NS all-time classic in neat Epic custom sleeve…yellow label press… )

Major Lance ‘Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um’ (Epic / UK / 1972 / M-) £2

Kiki Dee ‘(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am’ / ‘Baby I Don’t Care’ (Fontana / UK / 1964 / VG) £2

( Early one on Kiki (before she took Elton John’s dollar) and a nice blue-eyed Northern Soul double-sider — scuffed-up but plays nice no that I’ve just cleaned it… )

Valentino ‘I Was Born This Way’ (Gaiee / USA / 1975 / M-) £2

( Unplayed promo copy of this tuff to find 7” press… )

Bill Spoon ‘Love Is On The Way’ (Hense Forth / USA / 1990 / M-) £15

( Stunning Modern Soul dancer that has always been very, very tricky to source on 7”…. )

Tommy G & The Charms ‘I Know What I Want’ (Hollywood / USA / 1960s / VG+) £8

( Cool WD copy of this early-doors JB produced R&B shuffler — slight edge warp — dnap…pure groove….also got a (rare) UK London release )

Owen Gray ‘Jezebel’ / ‘Sugar Plum’ (Island (white) / UK / 1962 / VG) £2

( Marvellous Ska beater from Owen, lovely duet with Millie (Small) on the flip — love it…has had many, many plays but still in good shape for a 51 year old record… )

Lord Blakey ‘Snakes In The Square’ (Jump Up / UK / 1962 / VG) £2

( I’m beginning to get into a few of these (early) calypso records from the Islands — seeing a few comps popping up and on DJ playlists — why not? It’s just yet another strand in our ever-growing pantheon of music, right? Well-worn but no major playback problems here… )

Yvonne Fair and the James Brown and ‘Tell Me Why’ (King / USA / 1966 / M-) £12

( Wonderful R&B — great JB input here too — a cracker… )

King Sounds ‘Patches’ / ‘Version’ (King Sounds / Jamaica / 1970s / M-) £2

( Unplayed copy of this excellent JA version to the Clarence Carter biggie… )

Chick Willis ‘Stoop Down Baby’ / ‘It Ain’t Right’ (La Val / USA / 1972 / VG+) £2

( Classic Bluesy-R&B double-sider — great copy…. )

Cynthia Sheeler and Brothers Inc ‘Ease On Down To The Disco’ (LaVerne / USA / 1970s / M-) £2

( Only selling this cheap cos it came in cheap — DJ copy too — nicely ‘off-key’ Disco beater… )

Fats Domino ‘It Keeps Rainin’ (Liberty / UK / 1967 / VG) £2

( They reckon this was one of THE slowest records ever played at Wigan Casino — along with The Tams ‘Hey Girl, Don’t Bother Me’, Ray Pollard ‘The Drifter’ and other beautiful black music records of that ilk…this one is a 1967 repress of a rare 1961 original — dinked middle and label damage to the ‘Blue Monday’ flip — but — still WELL worth a fiver of anybody’s money! “…tears in my eyes…” )

The Marvellos ‘Something’s Burning’ (Loma / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £40

( Huge NS oldie — sounding incredibly good all over again — oh! Those strings…….very, very minor scuffs here and there….most other dealer’s M-, no doubt…. )

Jewel Akens ‘Tic Tac Toe’ / ‘The Birds And The Bees’ (London / UK / 1965 / Ex+) £4

( Beautiful yellow demo of this cool Popcorn double-sider — in fact — I could well imagine ‘Tic Tac Toe’ getting spins on the NS ‘scene in the current ‘anything goes’ climate…. )

Anna King ‘The Big Change’ / You Don’t Love Me Anymore’ (Ludix / USA / 1963 / VG+) £30

( Lovely copy of this ever-indemand early-Northern Soul / Popcorn / R&B spin from the last few years on our ‘scene — stunning… )

Sam The Sham and the Pharoahs ‘Love Me Like Before’ (MGM / UK / 1966 / VG) £2

( Raucous R&B from this madcap mob who hit paydirt with ‘Woolly Bull’ of course — lotsa scuffs so priced to sell — plays clean… )

Johnny Lytle ‘Gonna Get That Boat pts 1 & 2’ (Minit / UK / 1968 / M-) £2

( Slow builder from JL with a David McCallum-styled “talkover” over the top — the usual high-grade vibe-ism from ‘The Man’ himself…. )

The Bobby Saunders Xplosion ‘Pump’ (Mob / USA / 1982 / M-) £2

( Nutty record — hard to pigeonhole — part Funk, part Boogie part Cosmic Disco, part George Clinton… )

Gregory Isaacs ‘Let’s Dance’ / ‘Let’s Rock’ (Nationwide / UK / 1978 / Ex+) £8

( Big fave of mine on Cool Ruler — gorgeous version of the John Holt cut — Dirty Harry’s rub on the flip is ‘next level’…few scuffs…. give t’anks… )

Bobby Patterson ‘My Thing Is Your Thing’ (Pama (purple) / UK / 1969 / VG+) £8

( Not had one of these in ages — such a tune!! So good to turn up on a UK OG purple Pama press — few scuffs — plays more like an Ex… )

Laurel Aitken ‘Walk Right Back’ (Pama Nu Beat / UK / 1969 / VG) £2

( Classic Skinhead stomper — lotsa scuffs so priced low — plays 100% clean…. )

( Tuff Roots from ‘Youth — Devon Russell produced — killer horns…’Youths vocal style is totally unique…

Frankie Vaughan ‘Tower Of Strength’ + 3 (Philips EP / UK / 1961 / VG/VG+) £2

( Very, VERY palatable version of the Burt Bacharach tune now picking up followers on the Popcorn scene and massive on the Northern ‘scene since day dot thru Gene McDaniels’ powerhouse version — also done by Gloria Lynne and (whisper it) Paul Raven who went on to hit pay dirt as Gary Glitter in the 70s…

Force Of Nature ‘Baby I’m Yours (And I’m So Glad)’ (PIR / Italy / 1976 / VG+/M-) £8

( Lovely, pic-sleeved Italian press for this crisp Philly NS beater that regularly hits £50 / £75 on US press…. )

Flame ‘N’ King and the Pazant Bros ‘Brandyfoot’ (P.M.P / USA / 1984 / M-) £5

( Unplayed copy of this nutty synth-Funk tune which almost borders P-Funk to my ears — guessing it must be THE Pazant Bros and THE Flame ‘N’ King here…? )

Robert Henry Hensley ‘Baby You’re Gonna See Me Cry’ (Polydor / UK / 1968 / Ex+) £2

( More cool blue-eyed Northern this month, this time from Scott Walker-soundalike, RHH — nice tune — not sure if it’s ever had NS action? Neat copy in correct custom sleeve — not checked the flip… )

Freddie Perren and the Team Players ‘Shine On’ (Polydor / USA / 1977 / VG+) £12

( Rare one! Top drawer Disco banger fro, pure playa, Freddie P — sadly, there’s a little glitch in the vinyl which causes it to very slightly and lightly and not loudly tick for a few revs, not major at all — if interested, contact me for an mp3 — absolutely killa conga break — in correct custom sleeve… if it was M-, I’d be starting this @ £75, trus’….. )

Zoot Money ‘No One But You’ / ‘Prisoner’ (Polydor / UK / 1970 / VG+) £2

( Very slight ‘ripple’ warp on this so needs +2 on the Technics for safety — not sure how to describe Zoot’s stuff from this era so won’t try — you either dig it or you don’t…some label damage to topside… )

Otis Clay ‘That’s How It Is (When You’re In Love)’ / ‘Show Place’ (President / UK / 1968 / VG) £2

( Sadly — this is a bit rough so priced nice and low — killer ‘Beat Ballad’ on topside from Otis, right in that Ray Pollard ‘The Drifter’ vein…good, uptempo NS on flip too — dubblebubble — WHAT a voice this man had……. )

James Brown ‘Prisoner Of Love’ EP (Pye (purple-black) / UK / 1965 / VG+) £4

( 4 strong JB tracks: ‘Prisoner Of Love’ , ‘I’ve Got To Change’ , ‘Come Over Here’ and the excellent R&B dancer ‘Tell Me What You’re Gonna Do’ — few scuffs — very fair price… )

James Brown ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’ / ‘I Can’t Help It’ (Pye (purple-black) / UK / 1965 / VG+) £2

( Such a nice thing to be able to offer on OG UK press… )

( Incredible condition….hugely influential instrumentals… )

Johnnie Taylor ‘Friday Night’ (Stax / UK / 1975 / VG) £5 £2

( Rough copy — kinda scuff-y — but still plays fine, believe me — total bargain…better known on the NS ‘scene as a Steve Mancha spin but JT’s version is not to be sniffed at here… )

Rance Allen Group ‘There’s Gonna Be A Showdown’ / ‘Just My Imagination’ (Stax / USA / 1977 / M-) £2

( This man was BORN to sing Gospel………. )

Booker T & The MG’s ‘The Horse’ / ‘Slum Baby’ (Stax / UK / 1969 / VG+) £2

( 2 classic Memphis insts — topside is a raucous cover version of the Jimmy James & The Vagabonds

Otis Gayle ‘I’ll Be Around (voc / inst)’ (Studio One / Jamaica / 1970s / M-) £5

( Black / white reissue press copy here — I’d guess that this was from the 80s? Not sure — unplayed… )

Inez Foxx ‘Mockingbird’ / ‘He’s The One You Love’ (Sue / UK / 1963 / VG) £2

( Classic ‘early’ sound — huge on the ‘scene in the late-60s / early 7-s days — lovely red/yellow Sue UK press — another beautiful label design… )

( Solid Modern dancer from the dawn of the ‘scene….unplayed copy here… )

The Skatalites ‘Beardman Ska’ (Supreme / Jamaica / 1960s / Ex+) £5

( Red / Black label press here — unplayed — looks like an 80s reissue to me but I’m not positive… )

The Marvelettes ‘Don’t Mess With Bill’ / ‘Anything You Wanna Do’ (Tamla Motown / UK / 1965 / VG+) £8

( LOVE, love, love The Marvelettes — such a great bunch — this one’s a cracker too — both sides — lovely copy… )

( Great version of The O’Jays tune — immaculate copy… )

The Sand Pebbles ‘Love Power’ / (Track / UK / 1967 / VG+) £5

( Seemingly unplayed copy. Track records didn’t release much black stuff at all, believe me…slamming ‘Big City’ Northern Soul…rare UK issue of the great Teddy Vann-produced dancer… )
