Nice and varied list this time around. A bunch of killer 45’s in all price ranges. Albums and 12 inchers are back with a strong selection of mostly mid priced collectibles.
PM to reserve.
Some of the highlights:
Modern Soul/Boogie 45’s–
Crystal Motion (black label vinyl copy), Lamar Thomas “Feel so good inside” Mca promo, Liberation “Don’t spread your love around” GSF rare issue copy with “Take my best shot” on the flip, NYC proto disco via Patrick Adams/Sandy’s Gang “Hungry”, C.L. Blast “Love don’t feel like love no more”. There’s a few indemand boogie 45’s such as Direct Pressure “Let me love you”, Pulse “She’s hot”, Wicked “Bring your body”, Chocolate Buttermilk Band “Can’t let go”. I’m also happy to offer the two 45’s from the Chicago group Pamoja/Jewel, both originals in very clean condition. There’s also a bunch of high quality major label releases both rare and not so rare.
Northern Soul 45’s– Servicemen “I need a helping hand”, Vito & Salutations on Sandbag, Edd Henry “Your replacement is here”, Jackie Beavers (Tammy Levon) “Come back my love” on Nation, Roy Wright “Hook, line & sinker” and a few more.
Soulful funk 45’ssuch as Willie Johnson’s super tough Drive rarity “Lay it on me” plus classics in Sugar “Takin’ care of your main man”, Joyce Williams “The first thing I do in the morning” and Getto Kitty “Stand up and be counted”.
Crossoversoul in Otis Clay “You hurt me for the last time”, Universal Minds on Charles (now dried up and heavily indemand), Magnetics “Wasting time” (affordable but as good as their Sable sides). Two I had lots of interest in last time I had – Cruisers “Mink and sable mable” and Lost Generation “You only get out of love”. And two with a touch of latin namely Oaxaca “Stop your crying” and Cold Smoke “Don’t fall in love”.
On with the slower stuff:
A comeback on the2 step/mellow groovesection. CWCP, Starvue, Donnell Pitman , Wee Gee, Carletta Sue and more.
Ballads/Group/Sweet/Deep– another short but sweet selection with all high quality discs. Family Connection “This time”, Relatives “More time”, Diamonettes “Don’t be surprised” (on first label before Alston), Henry Ford “Take me for what I am. Modern sweet from New York City “Don’t rush me now”, Fauns Bell “Gift of love”, Gaslight Polydor issue.
Switching format:
12’s– Had someone raid this section before I got the list out but a bunch of great ones left from Four Below Zero, Skip Mahoney, Donald Albert, Marcus, Crosswind. And a two step duet from Tracy Spurlin & George Kerr in “If you could read my mind”.
Albums– Only essential stuff! 60’s Detroit soul from Freddy Butler and The Metros. Major label rarities from Wilson Williams, Edna Wright (what an album!), Joneses, Popcorn Wylie and others. Motown related in Odyssey, Satisfaction Unlimited and Bobby Taylor. Two step fans will get theirs in Karin Jones “Under the influence of love”, William Lane Jr. (minty fresh copy in shrink, including “A face in the crowd”. And a cover with him sporting his tightest Super Man t-shirt) and J.R. Funk & Love Machine “I really hope you understand”. And some indie labels – Memory of Justice Band, O’Jays “Super bad” (On first label Little Star, still sealed too!) and Jessie Butler.
Info about payment, grading, shipping costs etc after the listings. I require paypal payments over £150 to be sent as gift (or add 4% to the total) to cover paypal fees.
Jewel – Paradise / You and me – Jewel / EX / £500 (Modern soul evergreen with more than a touch of E,W&F and one that remained very rare. Don’t overlook the ballad flip.)
Pamoja – Oooh, baby / Only the lonely knows – Keiper / EX / £225 (Same group which later became Jewel of “Paradise” fame. This one is like a fresh breeze with a strutting beat, jazzy guitars and a perfectly balanced but also very personal falsetto lead which I hold as my favourite vocal ever. Flip is awesome as well.)
Chocolate Buttermilk Band – Can’t let go – CRM / EX / £200 (Lovely and deep boogie/modern soul dancer on a now rare and highly sought after 45. Nice ballad flip too. Sold for $657 on eBay last year.)
Liberation – Don’t spread your love around / Take my best shot – GSF / EX / £175 (Very rare issue copy with “Take my best shot” only available here. It’s a superior version to the Lee Mitchell song. The a-side is the superior one for me, comes highly recommended!)
Direct Pressure – Let me love you / Love flight – Future Electric / EX / £150 (Now more indemand than the Hiram & Direct 45 due to the excellent mellow boogie cut “Let me love you” only found here. “Love flight” still sounds great.)
Lamar Thomas – Feel so good inside – Mca / EX / £125 (Killer modern dancer that was reissued on a 12 inch recently. Promo copy which sadly means no pic sleeve. I have not seen any copies for sale since the one I listed, and sold, in December last year.)
Johnnie Walker – Love at first taste – New Detroit / EX / £120 (Tough lo-fi instrumental out of Detroit. Really gets deep and dirty on Part 2. One not seen for sale often now especially not in this super clean condition.)
Brief Encounter – Shake and move / I want you so much – Sonic / EX/EX / £100 (Highly sought after 2010 release by the group themselves with two previously unissued modern tracks. Both vinyl and picture sleeve is as new.)
Idris Muhammad – I’m a believer – Prestige / EX / £100 (Clean promo copy of this superb in-demander. I also have the album with the full version for sale.)
C.L. Blast – Love don’t feel like love no more / Beautiful lover – Juana / EX / £100 (Killer modern soul dancer for the grownups. Slightly different and better version than on the album here. Flip is a nice version of the Joe Chapman tune.)
Sandy’s Gang – Hungry – Sunrise / EX / £90 (Tough NYC indie proto disco from Patrick Adams. Needs to be listened to loud in the club to be fully appreciated!)
Pulse – She’s hot – Silver Cloud / EX / £80 (Killer souldful boogie dancer with the 45 being much rarer than the 12 inch. “She’s hot” side only came out as the b-side on scarce issue copies.)
Crystal Motion – You’re my main squeeze – Sound Gems / EX / £70 (Modern soul evergreen, still sounds great! On the rarest and most desirable format here – vinyl copy black label/silver text label variation.)
True Effect – EP – [no label] / EX / £60 (4 track likely unofficial/bootleg EP containing four songs off the first Side Effect LP that only got a promo release on the Gas label. “I want your love”, “Emotions”, the epic “Do you believe” and “Got to get away” which is also known as “Run, run, run”.)
Ghetto Children – It’s not easy to say goodbye / Don’t take your sweet lovin’ away – Roulette / EX / £50 (Nice demo complete with company sleeve. Two great, and for the Philly soul fan essential sides.)
Frank and James – You got the love I need / How long is forever – White Brothers / EX / £45 (Fantastic midtempo modern soul dancer. Flip is nice too but this side was previously released on the Smooth City label a few years earlier.)
Windy City – Hey it’s over – Innovation II / EX / £45 (Superb midtempo modern only found on rarer issue copies. Remember Manship auctioning the Warner Brothers second label a few years back.)
Ray Munnings – It can happen to you – EMI America / see desc / £40 (Great feelgood modern dancer which is usually seen on the UK Tammi label. This US release is much rarer. Same sided demo. Vinyl is EX apart from a heat mark in the outro. The mark is troublesome on one side but only creates a couple of pops in the last second or so of the outro, when the music is almost turned off.)
Smallwood Brothers – How many roads / No one – Atco / EX / £40 (Very rare issue copy with two excellent sides of 1977 Philly modern soul. With “No one” not being on demo copies.)
Sam Dees & Bettye Swann – Just as sure – Big Tree / EX / £30 (Classic! And another one that is harder to find than it should be as it’s just available on issue copies and not on the more commonly seen promos.)
Denise LaSalle – Here I am again – Westbound / EX / £30 (Highly recommended modern dancer. Nice clean ussue copy with flipside, comes in company sleeve.)
N’Cole – Thank you for the love / I’m gonna need this love – Millenium / EX / £20 (Two great sides here, a powerful uptempo dancer backed with a more mellow stepper type of sound. Both with hard basslines.)
Love Committee – Am I wasting time – Ariola America / EX / £15 (1975 Philly modern dancer that comes highly recommended, by me and many others. Appears on rarer issue copies only.)
Softones – That’s what love can do – H&L / EX / £10 (Ignore the artist, this is a highly recommended modern soul dancer. Vinyl has one inaudible scuff.)
Eddie Kendricks – I don’t need nobody else – Atlantic / EX / £10 (Nice version of the Lou Courtney track. From his underrated “Love Keys” album. Promo copy.)
Sabers – I feel like dancin’ / That’s all that matters – Bronze / EX / BIDS (Very rare and obscure 45 with two R&B-ish northern dancers. Barely any google hits on this one. I’ve not been able to price this properly, taking bids starting at £50.)
Willie Johnson – Lay it on me / That’s how it is – Drive / EX / £300 (Super rare Miami funk from 1971. Flip is a nice midtempo southern soul flavored cut. Very nice copy but has a BB hole through the label.)
Edd Henry – Your replacement is here / Crooked woman – Big Mack / EX / £160 (Rare Detroit NS dancer on the same label as Bob & Fred and The Grand Prix. Flip is a hard edged R&B dancer.)
Servicemen – I need a helping hand / My turn – Patheway / EX / £140 (Northern soul evergreen backed with a lowrider old school harmony cut. Styrene original with cartoon logo.)
Roy Wright – Hook line & sinker / Jimmy Robins I can’t please you – Mica / EX / £120 (Powerhouse northern dancer backed with the classic Chicago hard soul dancer from Jimmy Robins.)
Cruisers – Mink and sable mable – Gamble / EX / £110 (Indemand and awesome crossover soul. One to fire up any dancefloor. Could have sold 15 copies when I last listed a copy playing with light background noise @ £75 in December last year. Here’s a very clean black label promo copy.)
Otis Clay – You hurt me for the last time / Baby Jane – Dakar / EX / £80 (White dem of this classy classic crossover dancer backed with a storming NS cut. “Baby Jane” side has a X on label, comes in company sleeve.)
Universal Minds – A chance at love / I betcha – Charles / EX / £70 (Two sides of amazing group harmony soul, one with a dance pace and one ballad. Supply dried up a couple of years ago and this is now highly indemand with very few new copies appearing.)
Nate Evans and Mean Green – This time with feeling / The look on your face – DPR / EX / £70 (Popular crossover dancer backed with yet another version of the classic Chicago cut.)
Lost Generation – Pretty little angel eyes / You only get out of love – Brunswick / EX / £60 (Sought after 45 with two superb sides not on their albums.)
Larry T. & the Family – I’m moving on – Let / VG+ / £60 (Best cut off the expensive album and a piece of jazzy Bay Area soul which is just amazingly good. Light label wear as with all 45 copies I’ve seen of this. Record has some light sleeve marks but plays ok.)
Little Denise Stevenson – Would it be me? – Voice / EX / £50 (Label reads “12 year old with 50 years of soul”. I’m not sure about the truth in that but I really like her voice. And this is a rather charming crossover type of sound that I first heard via Pete Shirley and his Christmas party a few years back.)
Mark Capanni – A day in the blue – Capitol / EX / £45 (His other 45 which is also an original version to a Jackson Sisters track. Nice folky and soulful AOR.)
Denise La Salle – Count down (And fly me to the moon) – Chess / EX / £35 (Superb feel good crossover cut that’s been big the last couple of years. DJ copy text has been scratched out.)
Dee Dee Warwick – We’ve got everything going for us / Don’t ever give up on me – Mercury / VG+ / £30 (Two great sides from Dionne’s underrated sister. BB hole, orange/cream colored label version.)
Dede Warwicke – Everybody’s got to believe in somebody – Atco / EX / £15 (Killer midtempo crossover dancer, with a intro that reminds me of Bottom & Co’s “Gonna find a true love”. Demo copy complete with company sleeve.)
Newcomers – The whole world’s a picture show – Truth / EX / £20 (Classic crossover dancer. White/red logo label variation, like the copy in the youtube clip.)
Various – EP – White label / VG+ / £20 (4 track white label EP with four killer Motown cuts that was not released at the time of their recordings. Loud and clear pressing playing at 33rpm. Includes Isley Brothers “My love is your love forever”. Marvin Gaye “Sweet thing”, great version of the Spinners classic. Barbara McNair “It happens everytime” and Temptations “Gotta find a way”. A few light marks on vinyl but plays fine.)
Pat & Pam – My baby and I / Hey love – Day Dreaming / EX / £10 (“My baby and I” and the first part of “Hey love” is pretty straight forward Chicago crossover in the Lovelites style. Second part of “Hey love” is another story as the song turns into some deep hippie drugged down type of groove. Probably inspired by Rotary Connection/Minnie Ripperton but the result is so much better. Fantastic stuff!!)
Lamar and Belinda Dunn – Love and hate – Kader / EX / £70 (Killer killer two step which just gets deeper the longer it goes. Rare one and extra hard due to the fact many copies were pressed way off center, like the one in the youtube link for instance. The copy I have for sale is fine. Label has one tiny tear and one small tear. Flipside has a small sticker with BPM on.)
Holidays – Gettin kind of serious – Marathon / VG / £30 (Early, and much rarer first release of this killer two stepper. Later re-recorded and released as Holiday on the same label. Instrumental flipside here too. Record has light marks and plays with light background noise in the intro before clearing up well. Label has tear.)
Donnell Pitman – Your love is dynamite – After Five / EX / £30 (Epic 1986 release featuring the Chi-Lites with background vocals. Complete with the cool looking company sleeve.)
Anthony Watson – I can’t stop this feeling – SRO / EX / £18 (Funky two step with a rare groove feel. Same as Prasz. Light blue label red lettering version, which is vinyl unlike the dark blue label/black text one.)
Fred Johnson – Don’t leave me (I was wrong) / I feel the soul – Shi-Lush / VG+ / £150 (Promo copy of this killer slowie, seldom seen Chicago rarity. Vinyl has superficial marks, plays ok. Reduced price from last list.)
Masterplan – Hey girl you’ve won my heart – Fos-Glo / EX / £90 (Rare LA sweet soul. Super clean copy, unlike the ones on Popsike, half of that sold for more than I’m asking.)
Relatives – More time (to explain) / Lenient with my love – Archway / EX / £60 (Stunning S.F. ballad backed with a crossover cut.. Here with the much rarer small logo label variation.)
Diamonettes – Don’t be surprised – Dig / EX / £60 (Stunning slowie, version of the Lynn Williams cut on Suncut. Flip is more of the same but not of the same quality. Rare first label before Alston.)
Ethics – That’s the way love goes / There’ll still be a sweet tomorrow – Wale / EX / £50 (Rare first versions. Two excellent group soul sides. £100 at Manships site, very clean copy here too.)
Gaslight – Just because of you / It’s just like the magic – Polydor / EX / £50 (Two slow group soul pearls. Clean issue copy complete with company sleeve.)
Exceptional Three feat. Ruby Carter – What about me? / Un lucky girl – Way Out / EX / £40 (Great slowie later re-made by the producer Floyd Beck. Flipside is a nice crossover track. Rare first label release before GRT.)
Hands of Time – I’ll never forget you / This love for real – Inner City / EX / £35 (Early Leroy Hutson penned and arranged 45, both sides super soulful slowies.)
Confidentials – Does he really loves you – Masterpiece / VG+ / £20 (The vocal version to Dee Dee McArthur’s “Girl we’re in love”. Title suggests is a answer disc. Vinyl looks clean but the pressing is not the best. Perhaps they just dubbed the instrumental. First label before the iconic Mod-Art label.)
New York City – Don’t rush me now / Deja vu – Br-Roma / EX / £12 (Killer sweet soul, think this is the same group as Ultimates who released a 45 on the same label. Flip is a uptempo dancer. White promo.)
Stylistics – You’re a big girl now – Sebring / EX / £10 (Super nice and classic, here on the first label before Avco. Light blue label variation with correctly spelled song title.)
Four Below Zero – My baby’s got E.S.P. / Gentlemen and their Lady – Like her – Roulette / EX/EX / £30 (Classic NYC disco! Only way to get the 5:24 full length version.)
Skip Mahoney – Janice (Don’t be so blind to love) / Don’t stop me now – Salsoul / EX/VG+ / £25 (Two pumping disco sides. Company sleeve has a little edge wear.)
Tracy Spurlin & George Kerr – If you could read my mind – Harbor Light / EX/EX / £15 (Real nice little two stepper here. With almost a lovers rock feel.)
Karin Jones – Under the influence of love – Handshake / EX/EX / £110 (Promo copy of this super nice album that was recorded for the T-Electric label but luckily released by Handshake after that label closed down. “Ready, ready love”, “Here I go again”, “Last night in my dreams”, “Under the influence of love”, “You know me, I know you” are all great.)
O’Jays – Super bad – Little Star / S/S / £110 (Still sealed copy of this very rare first press. Quite an amazing crossover LP with alot of great non 45 cuts. Standout to me is the version of David Peoples “Gotta get my broom out”. The version of Elements/Bobby Dukes “Just to be with you” is good too. So is the immense slowie “Your turn this time”.)
O’Jays – s/t – Upfront / EX/VG+ / £8 (Later release of the above, minus the tracks “Never gonna say good-bye” and “Your turn this time”. Cover has light ring wear.)
Williams Lane Jr. – Unbelievable!! – Marylin / EX/EX / £100 (Very indie indie album. “A face in the crowd” is an unbelievably good two stepper. There’s also a couple of good modern/boogie dancers. As new copy still in shrink.)
Odyssey – s/t – Mowest / EX/EX / £90 (Very popular album with the standouts being “Battened ships” and “Our lives are shaped by what we love”. Nice clean copy but has a stereo sticker on cover. With insert.)
Metros – Sweetest one – Rca / EX/VG+ £85 (Classic Detroit album! So many great tracks and many not available on 45 either. Title track, “Since I found my baby”, “I’ll never forget you”, “Do the Pied Piper”, “Till the end of time” is the standouts to me. Cover just shy of EX, has one creased corner and some damage to title spine.)
Jessie Butler – Free to be me – Bound Sound / EX/EX / £75 (As new copy still in shrink. Rare 1984 Florida release featuring a couple of great modern soul dancers in “Let my love bring out the woman in you”, “Best part of a man” and a version of ZZ & Company’s “Getting ready for the get down”.)
Freddy Butler – With a dab of soul – Kapp / VG+/VG+ / £60 (Classic Detroit soul/Pied Piper LP. Includes “That’s when I need you”, “I like your style”, “They say I’m afraid” + more. Cover just shy of EX with a little light general wear and a small corner damage. Vinyl has some light sleeve marks, plays fine.)
Memory of Justice Band – Right on time – Platinum Express / EX/VG+ / £60 (Rare 1981 album with the great modern soul dancer “Going around in circles”. Album only track. Cover just shy of EX with a hint of ring wear.)
Wilson Williams – Up the downstairs – Abc / EX/EX / £60 (Very indemand album and rightly so. “I think it’s gonna work out fine”, “Faith will bring it home”, “I like being in love with you”, “All that glitters ain’t gold” and “Groovy feeling” are all awesome, both for home listening purposes and for the dancefloor.)
Edna Wright – Oops! Here I go again – Rca / EX/EX / £50 (Lovely album from the ex Honey Cone singer produced by Greg Perry. A bit of a underrated, both music quality and rarity wise. Title track, her version of “Come on down”, “If the price is right” and “Spend the night with me” being my personal standouts. Gold promo stamp on back cover.)
Peace, Justice and Equality – It’s time – Stone Gold / EX/EX / £50 (Rare soul album featuring to me the best version of essential mellow groove cut “Of all the hearts”. Don’t miss out the sublime sweet soul cuts in the title track and in “I done you wrong”. Lovely copy still in shrink.)
Popcorn Wylie – Extrasensory perception – Abc / EX/EX / £50 (Very nice 1974 album produced by Lamont Dozier on his prime. “How did I lose you” plus “Lost time” is the standouts for me here.)
Satisfaction Unlimited – Think of the children – Hot Wax / EX/EX / £40 (Fantastic album covering different styles of soul. Crossover in “Bright city lights”, two step in “Let’s change the subject” and a dancer with a rare groove touch in “Seeing you in the eyes of a blindman”.)
Bobby Taylor – Taylor made soul – Gordy / see desc/VG+ / £35 (With the album only cuts “Don’t be afraid” and a stomping version of “Little miss sweetness”. The later being one of my fave Smokey Robinson penned tues. Vinyl is EX and plays great apart from a scratch making noise covering parts of B4 and B5, “One too many heartaches” and “It should have been me loving here”. Both pretty weak tracks. Cover has light general wear, cut corner and small tear on back. Still looks decent.)
Doris Duke – Woman – Scepter/Contempo / EX/EX / £30 (With her version of the Marlena Shaw tune “Woman of the Ghetto”, here in a full length version. Cover still in shrink.)
Joneses – s/t – Epic / EX/EX / £25 (Essential Philly soul album! Includes “Who loves you”, “In love again”, “Lies”, “Universal love” and more. White demo with programming stepper on front cover.)
Tommie Young – Do you still feel the same way – P-Vine/Soul Power / EX/EX / £25 (Japanese re-issue with bonus cuts not on the original LP. With “Hit & run lover”, “Do we have a future”, “That’s all a part of loving him” and more. As new copy complete with OBI and insert.)
J.R. Funk & the Love Machine – Good lovin’ – Black Sun / EX/EX / £15 (With the killer two stepper “I just hope you understand” which shares the backing with C# Sharp “My turn to shine” but is better. If you need some lame excuses after acting selfish to your partner wrap your ears around the spoken parts. Canada press with tiny cut out hole.)
Spanky Wilson – Speciality of the house – 20th Century / EX/EX / £12 (Includes at least two killer modern soul dancers in the title track + “Easy lover”.)
Clay Hammond – Streets will love you – Evejim / EX/EX / £12 (1988 release featuring the album only, and lovely modern soul dancer “They don’t makeum no more”.)
Various – WMMR Breakout – Starr / EX/EX / £10 (Obscure Philadelphia radio station album with recordings from ten different bands. The one for us soul fans is Alice Cohen & Fun City “Save the best for last” which is a great modern soul dancer. Only available on this album.)
Philippé Wynne – Wynne jammin’ – Uncle Jam / EX/EX / £8 (With the amazing track “Hotel eternity”. “You gotta take chances” is almost as good, and “Put your own puzzle together” is not bad either. White promo copy, back of cover has gold promo stamp.)

Gradings
NM – spotless record. One grading I don’t really use – one tiny mark/scuff/flame/scratch and it’s EX. Many new records will not make this grade.
EX – Basically everything that will look and play great.
VG+ – Will have marks that may very moderately affect play. Might have fairly large amount cosmetic marks not affecting play.
VG – Lots of marks, should still play fairly well but not perfect.
VG- – Lots and lots of marks, see description on how it plays.
Dear All,
Hi and welcome to the May 2016 list.

Soulful funk 45’s such as Willie Johnson’s super tough Drive rarity “Lay it on me” plus classics in Sugar “Takin’ care of your main man”, Joyce Williams “The first thing I do in the morning” and Getto Kitty “Stand up and be counted”.
Crossover soul in Otis Clay “You hurt me for the last time”, Universal Minds on Charles (now dried up and heavily indemand), Magnetics “Wasting time” (affordable but as good as their Sable sides).
A comeback on the 2 step/mellow groove section. CWCP, Starvue, Donnell Pitman , Wee Gee, Carletta Sue and more.
Ballads/Group/Sweet/Deep – another short but sweet selection with all high quality discs. Family Connection “This time”, Relatives “More time”, Diamonettes “Don’t be surprised” (on first label before Alston), Henry Ford “Take me for what I am. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxoG-cyVEGo
Liberation – Don’t spread your love around / Take my best shot – GSF / EX / £175 (Very rare issue copy with “Take my best shot” only available here. It’s a superior version to the Lee Mitchell song. The a-side is the superior one for me, comes highly recommended!)

https://youtu.be/ma7AoaWPSKI
Direct Pressure – Let me love you / Love flight – Future Electric / EX / £150 (Now more indemand than the Hiram & Direct 45 due to the excellent mellow boogie cut “Let me love you” only found here. “Love flight” still sounds great.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZYaPAXGTw4
