FREEWAY: Keep On Shinin' * IEMPSA, made in Peru, VG+, 500.- Euro
Freeway where an US band, that toured in Peru and ended up down there. They recorded two 45s for the local Iempsa label, both are great Modern Soul dancers and this here is by far the rarer one one. Great funky 70's soul and something for the upfront DJs out there. You won't see another copy anytime soon!
MURPHY BROS.: Fool For My Baby / Over Here * URBANA, M-, 250.- Euro
A deep soul rarity from the westcoast, that Sir Shambling raves about on his website. Accompanied by Joe Kincaid, a Los Angeles bandleader, who recorded with Harmoica Fats and King Solomon. Super clean copy and not a record you see on a regular basis for sale.
PAUL ANKA: I Can't Help Loving You * RCA VICTOR, made in Peru, labels as shown, VG-, 200.- Euro
The strange world of Northern Soul. Not just that Paul Anka, a pop artist, made a Northern Soul classic, this is - to the best of my knowledge - the first copy ever surfaced out of Peru. It comes with it's original peruvian RCA company sleeve. Unfortunately it has many small marks and plays crackly, especially during the first few bars, but it's a unique piece of vinyl and a nice addition to the pile of "Soul releases from strange parts of the world".
ALBERT WASHINGTON: I'm The Man * FRATERNITY, VG-, 100.- Euro
Half price on a wounded, but great playing copy of this R&B fueled Northern Soul dancer. Vinyl has numerous small marks and a larger, but not sounding surface scratch and there is an edge chip, that doesn't go into the playing surface. It's a good copy to DJ with as the saying goes.
DEE EDWARDS: All The Way Home / Love, Love, Love * D-TOWN, M-, drill hole in lbl, 100.- Euro
Extra clean copy of this stunning 60's Detroit double sider produced by Mike Hanks. In your face Northern on featured side and midtempo heaven on the flip.
MARVELLE & THE BLUE MATS: The Dance Called The Motion * DYNAMIC SOUND, VG++, water damaged labels, 75.- Euro
Hard hitting deep funk with all the ingredients you like, if funky stuff is your bag. Open drums, raw vocals and a tight backind band. Clean vinyl with only the lightest handling marks, label is as shown in the picture.
THE FOUR PRO'S: You Can't Keep A Good Man Down / Everybody's Got Some Soul * CARLA, VG+, drill hole in lbl, 75.- Euro, sold
This short lived Detroit group released only two 45s under the aegis of Mike Terry, this is their overlooked second 45 from 1967 and no matter what side you put the needle on, you get blasting dancefloor dynamite out of your speakers. Check the soundfiles!
LEE McDONALD: Gotta Get Home / Show Me * DEBBIE, M-, 75.- Euro
Outstanding Modern Soul stepper from 1979. Top side is on the rare LP by Lee McDonald as well, but the 7" provides a different mix compared to the LP-take. Flip it over for a beautiful slow jam.
CHUCK EDWARDS: Downtown Soulville * SOUL CITY, Made In the UK, VG+, promo, 60.- Euro
Meanwhile the US release on Punch is hard to find and this one is even harder. Here is the promo copy of "Downtown Soulville", the title song of Matt Weingardens highly recomnended radio show, on Soul City. Dave Godin and David Nathans label, that was operated out of their record shop in London and had a major impact on the UK soul scene. Anyway, this is a funky 1968 dancer with gritty vocals. Shame about the missing push out centre, but that's why you can get this for fair money here.
OTTO DE ROJAS Y LOS ULTRAS 76: Al Ritmo Del Bump-Bump / Choca Las Caderas * RCA, Made in Peru, VG++, 60.- Euro
This is the cleanest copy I ever had of this latin soul bomp, that crossed over to the Northern Soul scene. Of course this is a cover of "Soulful Strut" played with a tighten-up-beat and this was only released in Peru. Flip it over for another great dancer. Fantastic record!
FLOYD BECK: Got To Be A Man * F&M, VG++, 50.- Euro
Floyd Beck's first solo release from 1975, recorded in Pittsburgh and it's an exceptional floating midtempo groove, that ticks all the boxes. The wonderful world of independent soul releases! A great record and underpriced considereing it's rarity and the quality of the musical content.
Local St. Louis early 70's rarity, that never really got the attention it deserves. A funky baseline leads you straight into an irresistable groove and Bobby's gritty vocals are surely the icing on the cake. The record has lenghthy scratch, that causes mild clicks, nothing too bad. Check the soundbyte before ordering!
DAVID SEA: Angel (You're My Sunshine) * HY-TYDE, VG, 50.- Euro
Birmingham / Alabama modern soul on the first local Hy-Tyde label. Super soulful stuff by one of the most underrated voices of soulmusic's long history. He later joined the Temptations when they where touring with Dennis Edwards as the last remaining member of this Motown supergroup.
L.J. REYNOLDS: Intruder / Call On Me * MAINSTREAM, M-, 50.- Euro
Hard hitting funky edged soul for all of you, who like their soul on the rougher side of things. Popping up on forward thinking playlists recently and rightly so!
WILLIE TEE: Sweet Thing / Man That I Am * GATUR, VG+/VG, H2O damaged labels, 50.- Euro
Awesome funky soul by New Orleans legend Willie Tee on his own Gatur label. This is the misspelled version, credited to "Willie Lee". Hurricane Kathrina did some damage to the labels. Flipside plays with mild clicks, but it's all about "Sweet Thing" anyway.
OCIE SMITH: Everybody But Me * BROADWAY, M-, 40.- Euro
Extra clean copy of this underrated 60's mid- to uptempo soul dancer. Broadway was a subsidiary of Juggy Murray's Sue records and a powerhouse for quality 60's soul.
GIN AND THE GENTS: Teenage National Anthem Boy And Girl / Dreams For Sale * MISS THING, M-, 40.- Euro
Here is a weird, but great record by a group, that later morphed to the Versatile Gents, who had a great record on Linco and then changed their name again to the Vee Gees, best known for their magnificient "Talkin" on Jump Off records. The featured side is superb sweet soul, while the flipside offers a swinging dancer.
Meco Monardo's first record and it's a groovy masterpiece with a mindblowing good arrangement. Meco is best known for his retakes of popular tunes like "Beethoven's fifth Symphony" or the "Star Wars Theme" and turn them into galactic disco funk anthems. This 45 marks his starting point and to my ears, it's a killer. Meco loved to play around with words and the band name Megaton is a conglomerate of the first name of his partner in crime Tony Bongiovi.
Mighty fine funky soul from 1969 by Doc Oliver, whose real name is Marion Oliver, he released just three 45s during his career and this one is his debut from 1969.
JEAN SHY: We've Got A Good Thing Going / You've Gotb To Take It (If You Want It) * FOX CAR, VG++, 35.- Euro
Two fantastic, sophisticated and soulful New York sides back to back somewhere between sweet soul and crossover. Great production with strings and things and Jean Shy is a hell of a great singer. I can't really decide which side I prefer, so check out both soundsnippets.
THE CONTRIBUTORS OF SOUL: You Can't Help But Fall In Love * TAD, VG+, residue from removed stickers on lbl, and run-out-grooves 30.- Euro
They indeed contributed to soul with this crossover masterpiece. Perfect harmonies, a floating backing beat and a masterful arrangement by Eddie Silvers add to an almost perfect 1970 record. Some noise towards the end of the record, check the soundbyte before ordering.
THE OLYMPICS: Girl, You're My Kind Of People * WARNER BROS., M-, drill hole in lbl, 30.- Euro
Semi known and fantastic crossover soul by veteran R&B group The Olympics. This is the same song as Bob Relf on Trans-American and you will struggle to find a cleaner copy than this.
WILLIE HARPER: A Certain Girl / I Don't Need You Anymore * TOU-SEA, promo, storage warp, not affecting play, M-, 30.- Euro
Stone mint promo of this mindblowing New Orleans double header and Nola vinyl after Kathrina in great condition is so hard to find. Topside is written by Naomi Neville and has been recorded by Ernie K-Doe as well, but Willie Haper's cut has the guts. Flip it over for a mighty fine ballad.
THE RELATIVES: Lenient With My Love / More Time (To Explain) * ARCHWAY, VG, 30.- Euro
Excellent San Fran 70's dancer on top side. Flip it over for a sweet low rider sound. The dance side is a clean VG with mild surface marks, the flipside has a few more scuffs, but still plays very enjoyable.
TNT BAND: The Meditation * COTIQUE, VG+, 30.- Euro
Excellent Latin Soul dancer with a tighten-up guitar-riff, that always takes a record from great to fucking brilliant. This copy plays clean, but has a weird tiny spot on the playing surface, that causes mild clicks towards the end of the song.
ELDRIDGE HOLMES: Let's Go Steady * KANSU, M-, 30.- Euro
Great Northern/Crossover dancer from New Orleans. The song is written by Charles Brimmer and production credits go to Senator Jones. Nola stalwart names on a great slice of late 60's soul.
THE FANTOMS: Who Cares / Take Me There * PWER FUNKTION, water damaged labels, VG+, 30.- Euro
Two hard hitting bayou funk sides from 1972. Unfortunately hurricane Kathrina did some major damage to the labels, but you don't play the labels, do you?
ELLOIT SMALL: Girls Are Made For Loving * NEW SOUND, VG+, warped plays through with no problems, 30.- Euro
Half price on this rare local first release before Bang took over for national distribution. Record is mildly warped, but plays without extra tracking on both of my turntables.
SISTER SLEDGE: Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me * ATCO, M-, 25.- Euro
Another Mecca spin from 1974 and what a fantastic 70's dance sound it is. The group formed in 1971 in Philadelphia and never achieved bigger success until 1979 when Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards from Chic produced "We Are Family" and later on "He's The Greatest Dancer".
HARRY RAY: Ride Your Pony / Best Thing For Me * ALL PLATINUM, M-, 25.- Euro
Harry Ray was a member of the Moments and Ray Goodman & Brown and here he is with his first solo release on Sylvia Robinson's All Platinum output. Best described as slinky, funky sweet soul with a beat. I'm surprised that nobody ever sampled the intro.
REALISTIC'S: Please Baby Please / Too Shy * DE-LITE, M-, 25.- Euro
Cleveland / Ohio group soul goodie for all these sunday sessions these days. Superb vocal harmonies and a great production. Surely not a cheap record for long. Flip it over for a fine midtempo finger snapper.
THE ADMIRATIONS: Don't Leave Me / All For You * ONE-DERFUL, M-, 25.- Euro, sold
Awesome Chicago Northern Soul dancer backed up by an immense group soul midtempo tune. Extra clean copy, that never seen a needle before I lifted the soundfile.
MANDRILL: Mango Meat * POLYDOR, VG++, 25.- Euro, sold
Latin tingled funk bomb from Mandrill, that sounds just incredible played out loud. A record that Cut Chemist used to play in his funk sets and it was sampled by De La Soul if memory strikes me right.
RONNIE ANGEL: For Love * ONYX, VG, label damage, especially on the flip side, 25.- Euro
Underrated 60's soul dancer by a legend, if you are into Memphis soul history. Ronnie Angel's real name was Ronnie Stoots and he operated a recording studio and he owned a graphic design company called "Memphis Magic", they created many record sleeves in the 70's and designed the iconic Stax-Logo. This is a neat little late 60's dancer with lots of legs in it, check the soundbyte!
LITTLE ANN: Going Down A One Way Street * RIC TIC, VG+, 25.- Euro
Yes, this is the same Little Ann, who recorded "Deep Shadows", discovered by Gilly and Tats on one of their Detroit visits, and the Northern Soul banger "Who Are You Trying To Fool". This is her only official "old" release and it's a street smart, funky number and you should have a copy in your collection!
JEWELL & THE RUBIES: Kidnapper * LA LOUISIANNE, VG+, 25.- Euro
Rare local Lafayette /Louisiana 1963 first release before ABC took over for national distribution. A bit of a novelty R&B song, that deals with all the famous private eye TV-series of the 60's , that will bring back Jewell's lost/kidnapped love.
MARVIN GAYE: You're The Man * TAMLA, promo, red wax, M-, 20.- Euro
Great looking Tamla promo from 1972 and a song never released on LP in it's time. Excellent funky soul by Marvin backed up by Bohannon and his band and definitely the nicest way to own this masterpiece.
TRADEWINDS: Strange * TRIUMPH * VG to VG+, mild label damage, 20.- Euro
Another Philly record, that graced the decks of Colin Curtis and Ian Levine during the Mecca days. This was a project of guitar player Norman Harris, who later was one of the members of MFSB, who where the backbone of the Philly sound. One side is VG+ one side rather VG, but as it's a promo copy with identical sides, so this shouldn't be a problem.
GARLAND GREEN: Mr. Misery / You Played On A Player * REVUE, drill hole in lbl, VG++, 20.- Euro
Two great and underrated sides on this Chicago production supervised by Joshie "Jo" Armstaed. "Mr. Misery" is a great dancer, flip it over for a perfect slice of crossover soul written by Jo Armstead. The lyrics are awesome too!
ROYAL SHOWBAND: Panama Red * TRI US, VG+, 20.- Euro
The flipside to a Little Royal ballad offers this fantastic instrumental, that delivers everything a dancefloor needs. I used to play this pitched up a little (you can do that with instros, as no Mickey-Mouse-voice will ruin your set) and it worked wonders. This sounds so much like the T.S.U. Toronadoes to my ears, maybe someone knows more? Anyway, Houston Texas stuff from the top shelf, check the soundbyte!
GEORGE PORTER'S JOYRIDE: Cissy Strut / Sneaky Freaky * DEESU, M-, 20.- Euro
Two excellent super tight New Orleans Funk sides, probably unplayed before I lifted the soundfile. George Porter was - of course - the bass player for the Meters.
EDDIE JAMES: Her Mamma Won't Leave Us Alone / Sad Sad Feeling * STARTOWN, M-, mild lbl damage, 20.- Euro
Eddie James wastes no time complaining about his mother in law. He does this with a gritty soulful voice and a tight funky backing band, on a funny side note, the guitar player copies Jimi Hendrix solo on "Hey Joe". Flip it over for a facemelting deep soul cut. Great little record out of Chattanooga / Tennessee.
FLOATERS AND SHU-GA: For Your Love * FEE, VG++ very close to M-, 20.- Euro
Detroit stepper of the highest order and cheap too. The label design alone is worth the asking price, but this is no art exhibtion here; it's in the grooves that counts and to my ears, this sounds brillinat.
MARVIN HOLMES & JUSTICE: Tell The Truth / Summer Of '73 * BROWN DOOR, M-, 20.- Euro
The debut 45 of Marvin Holmes & Justice in Mint shape, whose "You Better Keep Her" is a classic Mecca spin and indemand for decades on the soul scene. Two great sides here, taken from their ultra rare debut LP. Top sides provides a funky 70's mover with soulful vocals and tight backings. Flip it over for an excellent instrumental.
SMOKIE BROOK: Long Time Ago / I Want To Be True * MR. BROWN, M-, 20.- Euro
Two fine sides on this extra clean disc. A Rhodes piano sets the tone for a great southern soul midtempo mover, flip it over for stunning deep soul ballad. This is of course Smokie Brooks, who recorded the immortal ballad "Eternal" with the fantastic funk flip "Spin-It-Jig" on Now records and another fine funk record on Veep.
MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL: Keep On Lovin' Me Honey / You Ain't Livin' Till You're Lovin' * TAMLA MOTOWN, made in Germany, M- / M-, 20.- Euro
Extra clean german picture sleeve issue of this mighty fine Motown double sider. Two superb songs and you hear in their duet records, that they where really in love with each other. Superb sounding and even better looking record!
THE WATTS 103rd STREET RHYTHM BAND_ Do Your Thing / A Dance, A Kiss And A Song * WARNER BROTHERS, Made in Germany, VG+/VG+ condition, 20.- Euro, sold
Hard to find and great looking german picture sleeve issue of this cool street funk double header by Charles Wright and the gang. The better A-side is VG++, the flip has one weird pop in it, plays fine for the rest of the record.
INEZ FOXX: Crossing Over The Bridge * VOLT, promo, VG+, 15.- Euro
So many great records on the Memphis Volt label, a subsidiary of Stax records. This one flies under the radar for way too long, it's a great crossover soul masterpiece with the unique voice of Inez Foxx, who started her career with her guitar slinging brother Charlie. Way better than it's price tag and a biggie in my record room.
Two stepper from 1981 produced by Clarence Reid and another proof, that quality doesn't have to break the bank. Clean copy in it's original distribution sleeve.
JACKIE MILTON: Little By Little * DE-VEL, promo, VG++, 15.- Euro
Overlooked 1973 release and crossover soul perfection from this New York based label. This is the first record on De-Vel and it's a great and collectable label with nothing but goodies in their oeuvre.
OHIO PLAYERS: Varee Is Love * WESTBOUND, M-, 15.- Euro
Beautiful sweet soul ballad by the mighty Ohio Players, who are better known for their funky sides (the flip offers an excellent funky instro). This one ticks all the boxes if mellow group harmony stuff is your kind of sound. Treasured in my record room and it should be in yours too! The sleeve is a bit worn, but hey, Westbound sleeves are rare meanwhile and at least, it's there.
PATTI & THE EMBLEMS: One Man Woman * KAPP, promo, VG+, 15.- Euro
Nice looking promo copy of this mighty fine 60's girlie dancer by the group, that had a R&B hit with their first release "Mixed-up, Shook-Up, Girl". The group came from New Jersey and the lead singer was Patti Russel.
SOLOMON BURKE: Stupidity * ATLANTIC, VG-, 15.- Euro
Early soul R&B dancer by the great Solomon Burke. Raunchy, driving, R&B fueled soul with bonkers lyrics about a dance called "Stupidity" and who wouldn't like to see a dancefloor filled with dancers doing this dance? Record has numerous marks, but plays like a champ. Check the soundbyte!
KIM WESTON: That's Groovy * MGM, VG++ to M-, 15.- Euro
Former Motown starlet Kim Weston recorded so many great sides, that it's really hard to name a favorite. I guess, this here is mine at least it's a constant play in my record room. Midtempo heaven with great lyrics about the good sides of life and Mrs. Weston is really singing her heart on this. You know, soul collecting makes sense with cheap and great records like this.
LEROY RANDOLPH: Good To The Last Drop * SPRING, M-, 15.- Euro
Extra clean copy, housed in it's original company sleeve, of this great uptempo early 70's dancer, that sounds rather like late 60's to me. Groovy to the max and Leroy surely sings his heart out here!
LOU COURTNEY: What Do You Want Me To Do * RAGS, M-, 12.- Euro
Essential and cheap as chips Modern Soul by soul singer estraordinaire Lou Courtney. Heavenly midtempo stuff and way better then most big money rarities.
HOT BUSH Tell Me That You Will * APA, M-, 12.- Euro
Unplayed stock copy o this T.K. distributed Florida 70's soul gem. A stepper of the highest order and cheaper then all the stupid useless reissues flooding the market these days.
DONNY GERARD: He's Always Somewhere Around * GREEDY, M-, 12.- Euro
One of the very best things you can buy for next to nothing. A 70's dancer, that sounds like 3 figures, a label design by an unknown maestro and the song was published by "Joyfully Sad Music" /what a name for a publishing company!), honestly, what more do you want?
BOBBY BYRD: Keep On Doin' What You're Doin' * BROWNSTONE, VG++, 12.- Euro
How many essential funk records in the late 60's and early 70's where produced by James Brown? Must be way more than 100. Anyway, this one of them and if you don't get the dancers up with this record, they are most likely lame or deaf.
THE PERSUADERS: Love Gonna Pack Up (And Walk Out) * WIN OR LOSE, VG++, 12.- Euro
I collect everything with the "Poindexter Brothers" on the production credits and you should do this too. Like the Mizell Brothers, they created a unique sound, that lifts every song into soul heaven. The Persuaders do persuade me too with their great harmonies. Simply a wonderful 70's soul record and it's cheap too!
JOHNNY & THE EXPRESSIONS: Something I Want To Tell You * JOSIE, VG+, 12.- Euro
Great 60's sweet soul low rider ballad with Ralph Weeks on lead, Ralph Weeks was a singer with roots in Panama and he recorded some mindblowing records during the 60's and 70's.
Mindblowing mellow groover by golden voice J.R. Bailey and a true working class song, with the protagonist looking forward to spend some time with his girlfriend after a long day in the factory. Great record and cheap as chips!
CLARENCE CARTER: Looking For A Fox * ATLANTIC, promo, VG+, 10.- Euro
Muscle Shoals / Rick Hall production and a great funky dancer by Clarence Carter. This was comped by Kent records for thgeir "Good Times" LP and considering, that an US-45 costs nearly $20 to import and VAT taxes on top, 10 Euro is simply a steal for a great record like this.
CICERO BLAKE: Shing-A-Ling / Loving You Woman Is Everything * BRAINSTORM, M-, 10.- Euro, on hold
Nice clean xcopy of this fine 1967 soul release by the great Cicero Blake. One uptempo side and a really nice downtempo song. Simply a good generic soul record.
BOBBY & CLYDE: My Day Is Coming * BLUE CANDLE, M-, heavy writings on label, 10.- Euro
Closing the list with a heavy deep soul ballad from Miami's T.K. productions team. Churchy male duet with stunning vocals by this male duet. Funny enough, you only find copies of this in the Netherlands; this record was super. popular with the Surinam population over there and it was John Anderson who shipped masses of deep and slow records to this part of the world.
ARETHA FRANKLIN: Integrity * ARISTA, Made in Germany, M-/M- condition, 10.- Euro
This ugly looking german picture sleeve issue hides away one of the most soulful 80's dance tunes on the b-side. Aretha's "Integrity" is Modern Soul from the top shelf and it used to be a big spin for DJs like Terry Jones.
To order: PM me . Records will be reserved on a strict first come, first served basis.
No matter how big your order is, 8.- Euro flat unless you want registered postage!
I recomend registration for all orders over 50.- Euro for additional cost of 3.- Euros.
The list is not really sorted, so you find Funk, next to Northern and R&B next to Modern. Prices are in Euro!!!
Grading: Goldmine grading system - M- / VG++/ VG+ / VG / VG- etc.

MEGATON: Diggin' * DCA, M-, 35.- Euro
Meco Monardo's first record and it's a groovy masterpiece with a mindblowing good arrangement. Meco is best known for his retakes of popular tunes like "Beethoven's fifth Symphony" or the "Star Wars Theme" and turn them into galactic disco funk anthems. This 45 marks his starting point and to my ears, it's a killer. Meco loved to play around with words and the band name Megaton is a conglomerate of the first name of his partner in crime Tony Bongiovi.

Extra clean copy, housed in it's original company sleeve, of this great uptempo early 70's dancer, that sounds rather like late 60's to me. Groovy to the max and Leroy surely sings his heart out here!

THE O'KAYSIONS: Girl Watcher * COLUMBIA/STATESIDE, made in Germany, Vinyl: M- / Sleeve: VG+, "x" on lbl, 10.- Euro

ARETHA FRANKLIN: Integrity * ARISTA, Made in Germany, M-/M- condition, 10.- Euro
This ugly looking german picture sleeve issue hides away one of the most soulful 80's dance tunes on the b-side. Aretha's "Integrity" is Modern Soul from the top shelf and it used to be a big spin for DJs like Terry Jones.
soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/arethaintegrity1.mp3
