BURNING STAR: Trip Horns / Burning Star * WOW!, VG, stamp on lbl, 750.- Euro
Beyond rare psych funk double sider, that never pops up for sale. Two great sides to chose from and probably a once in a lifetime chance to purchase this. Both sides have mild surface marks, nothing deep - this copy sounds amazing.
DAVE BRADY AND THE STARS: Ridin' High * DARBY, VG to VG+, 400.- Euro
Rare local Minneapolis 60's uptempo dancer and a cover of the 1966 Impressions release "Ridin' High". This would fit very well in a progressive Northern Soul set, file under "Rare and underplayed". This copy has mild marks only and plays like a champ.
BABY RAY: Dance My Tears Away * CAPCITY, M-, 250.- Euro
Stone mint copy of this awesome slice of uncompromising danceable 60's soul. Probably unplayed before I lifted the soundfile. I found it in this brown sleeve and I guess it never left the sleeve, before I layd my hands on it.
MURPHY BROS.: Fool For My Baby / Over Here * URBANA, M-, 200.- Euro
A deep soul rarity from the westcoast, that Sir Shambling raves about on his website. Accompanied by Joe Kincaid, a Los Angeles bandleader, who recorded with Harmoica Fats and King Solomon. Super clean copy and surely not an easy record to track down.
VEDA: Get Up To Get Down /You Can Love Again * MW, VG+, 175.- Euro
Scarce funky Modern Soul from 1978. This is the same group, that recorded the immortal "What It'*s All About" on West Sound. The dance side has a few light crackles during the intro, but cleans up nicely afterwards. Ballad flipsidse plays clean, but has a visible surface mark.
PAUL ANKA: I Can't Help Loving You * RCA VICTOR, made in Peru, labels as shown, VG-, 150.- Euro
The strange world of Northern Soul. Not just that Paul Anka, a pop artist, made a Northern Soul classic, this is - to the best of my knowledge - the first copy ever surfaced out of Peru. It comes with it's original peruvian RCA company sleeve. Unfortunately it has many small marks and plays crackly, especially during the first few bars, but it's a unique piece of vinyl and a nice addition to the pile of "Soul releases from strange parts of the world".
HIGH SOCIETY: I Can't Believe / You Can't Hide The Real You * U.S.A., strong VG+, 125.- Euro, sold
Excellent Chicago group soul crossover winner with an equally good, funkier flip. It sounds incredible and looks fantastic in it's original distribution sleeve. Light marks only, soundquality is superb.
RAY FRAZIER: Your Eyes * THE CARRIAGE TRADE, M-, 125.- Euro
Shiny clean copy of this west coast early 70's masterpiece. This and his mega rare Stanson 45 are surely the finest examples of the smooth funky mellow sounds coming from Los Angeles during the era. Crossover soul from the top shelf and this copy is as clean as it gets!
TROY: And Tomorrow Means Another Day We're Apart * COLUMBIA, promo, wol, M-, 125.- Euro
Superb midtempo Philly Modern Soul dancer from 1972 and a prime example of the sound of the city of brotherly love. Produced by Bobby Martin, who later found fame with his work for Philadelphia International.
JAMES WALSH GYPSY BAND: Cuz It's You Girl * RCA, Testpress, M-, 125.- Euro
Minneapolis Modern Soul classic on a clean RCA Testpress. Matrix reads: PB-11403 A / PA-11403-C. First played during the Stafford days and funny enough also from a testpress.
SLY SLICK & WICKED: All I Want Is You * EPIC, promo, M-, 100.- Euro
Midtempo Modern Soul from the top shelf. Produced to perfection by Dunn Pearson and a cover of the Four Flights on Almeria, that was released a year before the Sly Slick & Wicked adapted the song. I prefer this version by a country mile due to the smooth and slick production and the perfect harmonies by this outstanding group.
WALTER JACKSON: Let Me Come Back * BRUNSWICK. VG to VG+, 75.- Euro, on hold
Clean playing copy of one of the best 70's soul sounds ever pressed on vinyl. Chicago studio cats Sonny Sanders and Carl Davis produced this and Jeff Perry wrote this masterpiece. As the icing of the cake you get disabled singer Walter Jackson's superb vocal performance. A crossover soul landmark record and a must have for every serious collection. Vinyl has several mild marks, but plays like a champ.
BOBBY HEBB: You Want To Change Me * PHILIPS; Promo, VG+, 75.- Euro
Clean looking copy, but slightly hissy during the first few rotations. Why oh why did the record industry invented styrene? Anyway, Gamble & Huff recorded this Northern Soul gem in Philly and this is Bobby's best dancer.
BOBBY FREEMAN: I'll Never Fall In Love Again * AUTUMN, VG to VG+, labels as shown, 75.- Euro
Two 1965 Sly Stone sides back to back. "I'll Never fall In Love Again" is a great dancer and found fame on the Northern Soul circuit. Vinyl has superficial surface marks and plays very strong VG+.
LYNN TANNER: Moonlight Girl / Swanee River * SHO-BOAT, VG, 75.- Euro
Belgian Popcorn is a mystery to me, but the internet says, that this record belongs to this genre and it's rare too. One side is rather midtempo and a popcorn sound, flip it over for a raunchy R&B take on "Swanee River".
J.J. LEWIS: When (Will You Be Coming Home) / Black Annie * MALACO, M-, some tiny pressing bubble, not affecting play, mild label damage on flip, 75.- Euro
A rarity from Jackson Mississippisn Malaco output and way harder than the big ticket items on the label as the Patterson Twins or Richard Caiton. Musically it's a mellow groove midtempo dancer with a hint of Blues in it topped by excellent deep vocals by J.J. Lewis, who only recorded this one 45 in his career.
BEVERLY McKAY: Baby You're So Right * OLD TOWN, promo, VG++, 60.- Euro
Semi-know and rather excellent 60's soul dancer with just an echo of R&B in it. A prime example of black music in transition to what we call soul and something, that should work very well in the hands of the right DJ.
CURTIS MAYFIELD: Tripping Out * RSO, Promo, VG to VG+, 60.- Euro
1980 Curtis Mayfield Modern Soul masterpiece, that sounds awesome played out loud. Mild surface marks on vinyl, plays with mild surface noise in parts and occasional pops.
THE OHIO PLAYERS: You Don't Mean It / Trespassing * COMPASS, M-, sticker on either side of the label, 50.-
As a Northern Soul fan, you will be familiar with Towanda Barnes raunchy version of "You Don't Mean It" on A&M released in 1969. This is the first release of this great song from 1967 by the mighty Ohio Players. Great uptempo sounds, that ticks all the boxes. Flip it over for another song, that got covered later on by the Skull Snaps for their legendary LP on GSF. Vinyl is super clean except one tiny surface mark, that does not sound at all.
WILLIE TEE: Sweet Thing / Man That I Am * GATUR, VG+/VG, H2O damaged labels, 50.- Euro, on hold
Awesome funky soul by New Orleans legend Willie Tee on his own Gatur label. This is the misspelled version, credited to "Willie Lee". Hurricane Kathrina did some damage to the labels. Flipside plays with mild clicks, but it's all about "Sweet Thing" anyway.
EVELYN LEGRAND: I Got Caught / High And Dry * S.P.Q.R., M-, 50.- Euro
Most likely this record comes from the decks of Lenis Guess from Norfolk/Virginia. Two great uptempo R&Bish sides by a lady, who only released this one record. I'm pretty sure she gave name to Frank Guida's Legrand label, which was connected to S.P.Q.R., but I have no further information.
SAM DEES: It's All Wrong (It's All Right) / Don't Keep Me Hangin' On * LO LO, strong VG+, 50.- Euro
Sam Dees third 45 and many dedicated collectors of this great soulman argue, that this is the first record by him, that shows the real Sam Dees as a songwriter and singer. "It's All Wrong" is a superb deep ballad and Dees continued recording outstanding heartwrenching slow sides in his later career. They are in contrast to his first two releases, that tried to establish him as a gritty dancefloor pleaser; his debut "Lonely For You Baby" is still a favorite on the Northern Soul circuit. Here he tries himself for the first time as the big sufferer of life's wicked ups and downs. A previous owner pinned down "Soul" on the label, allthough it looks slightly ugly, he was damn right.
FLOYD BECK: Got To Be A Man * F&M, VG++, 50.- Euro
Floyd Beck's first solo release from 1975, recorded in Pittsburgh and it's an exceptional floating midtempo groove ticking all the boxes. The wonderful world of independent soul releases!
N/WT. 14 KARAT BLACK: Ain't Nothin' But A Habit * LUNA, promo, M-, 50.- Euro, sold
A record as good as the Carstairs "It Really Hurts Me Girl" and other funky edged dancers, that got exposure on the soul scene, but it never got any wider recognition for reasons unknown. Great blasting early 70's sound with killer horn riffs, fantastic vocals and a superb dance beat. File under underplayed secret weapon for the DJ with enough balls to play fresh tunes.
DEBBIE TAYLOR: Just Don't Pay / I Don't Wanna Leave You * ARISTA, M-, black ink spots on either side of the label, 50.- Euro, sold
Soul heaven on both sides! "Just Don't Pay" is a a stunning slice of 70's dance soul while"I Don't Wanna Leave You" is one of the finest ballads ever pressed on wax. Debbie Taylor's vocal performance is out of this world and the production by Tom Moulton is just perfect. A desert island disc offered here in M- condition. Shame about the labels, but the music is crystal clear and that what counts.
MARIE KNIGHT: You Got A Way Of Making Love / I Know Every Move You Make * DECCA, promo, wol, VG, 50.- Euro
Rather risky lyrics for a singer, who usually worked in the gospel field in her younger days. Anyway, this is hard hitting R&B from 1954, something I usually don't deal with, but this record came my way and some of you out there will surely like this.
BARRY WHITE: All In The Run Of A Day * BRONCO, promo, M-, 40.- Euro
Barry White's third record release from 1967, before he became the bedroom-soul-superstar of the 70's. This mighty fine mid- to uptempo dancer has all the ingredients a proper nighter record needs. Check the soundbyte! This is the last copy of the small batch I had.
OTTO DE ROJAS Y LOS ULTRAS 76: Al Ritmo Del Bump-Bump / Choca Las Caderas * RCA, Made in Peru, VG+, 40.- Euro
Funky latin soul bomp, that crossed over to the Northern Soul scene. Of course this is a cover of "Soulful Strut" played with a tighten-up-beat and this was only released in Peru. Flip it over for another great latin fueled dancer. I'm down to my last copy of this and my contact in Peru tells me, that they are getting really hard to find in South America.
THE SOUL SET: I Don't Want Her, But I Need Her * JOHNSON, VG++, 35.- Euro
Upotempo, banging 60's dancer from 1968 and the last record The Soul Set released before they vanished without a trace. Clean vinyl with one cosmetic mark, that doesn't affect play at all.
ALVIN THOMAS: The Hesitation * GREAT SOUTHERN, VG+, H2O damaged labels, 35.- Euro
Scarce New Orleans funk with more vibes then a anybody can stand. Simply awesome instrumental sound, that ticks all the right boxes. Kathrina damaged labels.
MARIE FRANKLIN: You Ain't Changed * MAVERICK, promo, M-, 30.- Euro, sold
Sleazy slab of sister funk by this overlooked singer from Los Angeles. Just check out Marie's gruff hollering - totally convincing and full of scorn. Great record and as clean as it gets!
WILLIE HARPER: A Certain Girl / I Don't Need You Anymore * TOU-SEA, promo, storage warp, not affecting play, M-, 30.- Euro
Stone mint promo of this mindblowing New Orleans double header and Nola vinyl after Kathrina in great condition is so hard to find. Topside is written by Naomi Neville and has been recorded by Ernie K-Doe as well, but Willie Haper's cut has the guts. Flip it over for a mighty fine ballad.
SUGARPIE DI SANTO: Do The Whoopie / Get To Steppin' * BRUNSWICK, promo, wol, M-, 30.- Euro, sold
Nice funky 60's soul dancer by Sugarpie DeSanto and probably her best record to DJ with. She was a childhood friend of Etta James and you hear Etta's influence in her expressive singing. Flip it over for another winner more on the midtempo side of things.
MARVIN SMITH: Have More Time * BRUNSWICK, M-, 30.- Euro, sold
Classy Chicago dancer in mighty fine condition. Marvin Smith was a member of the Artistics and recorded four great 45s as a solo artists. (One more on the list) The company sleeve has seen better times, but it's in the grooves what counts.
CHUCK EDWARDS: Downtown Soulville * PUNCH, VG, 30.- Euro
Punchy late 1968 funky soul by rowdy guitar slinger and singer Chuck Edwards, a guy who played behind Bobby Bland and had an impressive discography for himself. He later on moved from Pittsburgh to San Francisco and formed the Edwards Generation. This copy has seen better days and has several light marks, but plays at least a grade better than it looks.
THE RELATIVES: Lenient With My Love / More Time (To Explain) * ARCHWAY, VG, 30.- Euro
Excellent San Fran 70's dancer on top side. Flip it over for a sweeet low rider sound. The dance side is a clean VG with mild surface marks, the flipside has a few more scuffs, but still plays very enjoyable.
ELLOIT SMALL: Girls Are Made For Loving * NEW SOUND, VG+, warped plays through with no problems, 30.- Euro
Half price on this rare local first release before Bang took over for national distribution. Record is mildly warped, but plays without extra tracking on both of my turntables.
ELDRIDGE HOLMES: Let's Go Steady * KANSU, M-, 30.- Euro, sold
Great Northern/Crossover dancer from New Orleans. The song is written by Charles Brimmer and production credits go to Senator Jones. Nola stalwart names on a great slice of late 60's soul.
LEROY HUTSON: All Because Of You * CURTOM, VG++, wol, 30.- Euro, sold
A Leroy Hutson masterpiece, that never fails to get the dancers up. Arranged by Richard Tufo, whose work for Hutson, Mayfield and other Chicgao artists can't be rated high enough.
TONY ASHLEY: All Along I've Loved You / I'll Never Be Satisfied * BRUNSWICK, promo, made in Belgium, VG++, 30.- Euro
Great looking and fantastic sounding belgian promo release of this substantial soul 45. One side is a deep ballad and one side is a gritty uptempo dancer, released in the US on Forte records. All three of Tony Ashley's 45s are great and this is his debut, that helped him get a contract with Decca records, where he released two more mindblowing 45s. He was shot death at the age of 29 while at work and his legacy is a short, but essential discography of three 45s.
WILLIE FISHER: Put Your Lovin On Me * JAMA; made in England, M-, 30.- Euro
Another forgotten soulman with just three 45 releases in his short, but remarkable career. This one got some attention by UK DJs in the 70's when a few US copies on the tiny Tigress outlet made it to England via John Anderson. Due to demand on the soul scene London based Jama records, who where specialized in Reggae, released his debut 45 in the UK. Anyway, this is a great Modern Soul dancer, that needs some reactivation; it sounds as fresh as almost 50 years ago, when this hit the stores in Great Britain.
CLARENCE REED: Sooner Or Later / Down With It, Can't Quit It * SELMA, promo, strong VG+, 30.- Euro, sold
Two great mid sixties Miami dance sides by Clarence Reid (Misspelled her as Clarence Reed), the guy who formed the Miami soul sound like no other. Clean playing copy with only the lightest surface blemishes..
LOU COURTNEY: It's Love Now / If The Show Fits * POPSIDE, promo, VG, 30.- Euro
Much rarer promo copy of this great double header by Lou Courtney. Two great 1968 dance sides here. Mild marks on vinyl, but a really nice player. Check the soundbytes!
THE WINSTONS: Color Him Father / Amen, Brother * METROMEDIA; VG+, 25.- Euro
Two contrasting and equally great sides. Featured is a mighty fine crossover soul dancer, flip it over for a legendary funk instrumental with an open drum break, that changed the face of music forever. This drum break was sampled for countless HipHop- and D'n'B productions and must be seen as a cornerstone in modern dance music.
THE FASCINATIONS: Girls Are Out To Get You * MAYFIELD, VG+, wol, 25.- Euro, sold
A record, that got me ingto soulmusic in the first place many decades ago. An irresistable driving Curtis Mayfield production for these soulful girls from Chicago's south side.
SAMMY LEE & THE SUMMITS: Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go? * RAMPART, promo, VG to VG+, some dirt on lbl, 25.- Euro
1966 was the year when everybody and his dog recorded "Hey Joe". The song was omnipresent during this year and this record dates back to 1966 as well. A record about a femicide by the way. Joe's girl was untrue and he killed her for that. A prime example of L.A. west side garage soul, the instro flipside ain't too shabby either. Check it out!
THE LOVELITES: (When) I Get Scared * PHI-DAN, promo, strong VG, 25.- Euro
Poppy soulful girlgroup dancer again from 1966 and again from Los Angeles with a wall-of-sound production heavily influenced by Phil Spector, who was the owner of Phi-Dan records. This group got nothing to do with the Lovelites from Chicago with Patti Hamilton's distinctive lead vocals. Anyway, a fine semi-known 60's dancer, that will surely make a few people run to the decks to ask what it is. Have a listen!
THE ADMIRATIONS: Don't Leave Me / All For You * ONE-DERFUL, M-, 25.- Euro
Awesome Chicago Northern Soul dancer backed up by an immense group soul midtempo tune. Extra clean copy, that never seen a needle before I lifted the soundfile.
THE ADMIRATIONS: Wait Till I Get To Know You * ONE-DERFUL, M-, storage warp, plays with no extra tracking, 25.- Euro
Their other 45 on One-Derful and again a great 60's dancer. This copy has a mild warp, but plays fine, without extra tracking, on both of my turntables.
SUGAR PIE DESANTO: Soulful Dress * CHECKER, VG+, 25.- Euro, sold
Not sure where the fantasy prices on discogs for this come from, but here is this classic mod soul dancer for a fair price in very fine nick. Top side is VG++, while the forgettable flipside has an inaudible surface mark.
Another Philly record, that graced the decks of Colin Curtis and Ian Levine during the Mecca days. This was a project of guitar player Norman Harris, who later was one of the members of MFSB, the backbone of the Philly sound. Extra clean copy, that never needs an upgrade.
RONNIE ANGEL: For Love * ONYX, VG, label damage on both sides, 25.- Euro, sold
Underrated 60's soul dancer by a legend, if you are into Memphis soul history. Ronnie Angel's real name was Ronnie Stoots, he operated a recording studio and he owned a graphic design company called "Memphis Magic", they created many record sleeves in the 70's and designed the iconic Stax-Logo. This is a neat little late 60's dancer with lots of legs in it, check the soundbyte!
EDDIE BO: You Are Going To Be Somebodys Fool Too * NOLA; M-, 25.- Euro
Edwin Bocage alias Eddie Bo, better know for his mindboggling funk sides from the 70's, with a superb 60's soul mover. Pure New Orleans class on extra clean wax. Don't sleep!
ARTIE CHRISTOPHER: My Baby's Crying / Don't Try It Again * 5-HIGH, M-, 25.- Euro
A fantastic deep soul record with an equally great uptempo cut on the flip. This has all the ingredients that I love in this genre – some simple gospel chord changes, fine organ/piano accompaniment, a gently cooing chorus and some rich horns. On top of which “Artie” does a really bang-up job of expressing the emotional angst of his own lyric.
WOOD BRASS & STEEL: Hey What's That You Say * ASTROSCOPE, VG++, 20.- Euro, sold
This is the band who played on arguably on one of the finest soul LPs ever recorded; the self titled Skull Snaps LP on GSF. My guess is, that they brought this song to the studio and the Skull Snaps changed the name to "It's A New Day", well, it's obviously the same song with minor changes in the lyrics and both songs are credited to Ineffie Woods. Anyway, this is a cool funk 45 and hard to find in such nice condition.
J.J. BARNES: Forgive Me / Now That I Got You Back * GROOVESVILLE, VG++, 20.- Euro, sold
Two blueprint Detroit 60's sides and a classic classic Solid Hitbound production. A soulpack record from back in the days, but clean copies are now vanished in collections. Two immense soulful sides with this typical motorcity sound. Every home should have a copy! There's a tiny mark on the very end of "Now That I Got You Back", that causes mild clicks. Just shy from M-
TOM AND JERROO: (Papa Chew) Do The Boo-Ga-Loo * JERRY-O, VG++, 20.- Euro
A fun record and one of the many attempts of label owner Jerry O to create a dance craze. How to dance to this properly is shown on this adorable youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EA7ggRdmsY
RICK JAMES: Fool On The Street * GORDY, promo, M-, 20.- Euro, sold
I always ignored Rick James records until George Mahood played this while double decking with Soul Sam at one of the Bamberg soulweekenders and it took the roof off. Fantastic banging 70's dance soul, cheap as chips and as good as it gets!
PERSUASIONS: One Thing On My Mind * A&M, promo, M-, wol, 20.- Euro, sold
Underrated 1975 dancer, that sounds the business played out loud. Maybe too cheap for DJs to play this out, but trust your ears and get blown away by a pre-disco-era masterpiece produced to perfection by Tony Camillo.
CORNELIUS BROTHERS & SISTER ROSE: Too Late To Turn Back Now * UNITED ARTISTS, VG+, 20.- Euro
A beautiful slice of 1972 crossover soul and a prime example of melodic danceable soul. A record drowning in strings with Eddie Cornelius' lead vocals shining through a simply stunning production by Bob Archibald in Miami / Florida.
JEANNIE DEE: Tow Heads A re Better Than One * MUSICOR, VG++, almost M-, 20.- Euro
Semi known funky soul from 1968 with a strong back beat and excellent vocals. Jeannie Dee was from Washington D.C. and recorded five collectable 45s between 1965 and 1971.
LADY MARGO: Simply Got To Make It / Stop By * CYNTHIA; M-, 20.- Euro, sold
Great uptempo 70's soul dancer on featured side, backed up by a fine deep soul ballad. A record out Phoenix / Arizona, not really a hotbed for soulmusic. Clean copy, what's not to like?
MARVIN SMITH: Love Ain't Nothing But Pain * BRUNSWICK, VG+, 20.- Euro, sold
Neat windy city dancer on the mighty Brunswick label, a company that put out more great soul records than you shake a stick at. Mild surface marks only, soundquality is top notch!
EDDIE JAMES: Her Mamma Won't Leave Us Alone / Sad Sad Feeling * STARTOWN, M-, mild lbl damage, 20.- Euro
Eddie James wastes no time complaining about his mother in law. He does this with a gritty soulful voice and a tight funky backing band, on a funny side note, the guitar player copies Jimi Hendrix solo on "Hey Joe". Flip it over for a facemelting deep soul cut. Great little record out of Chattanooga / Tennessee.
The opening line: "the saddest word that I ever heard is almost" gets me everytime I hear this superb Detroit 60's dancer. Still astonishing, how many fantastic records where produced in the motor city and how distinguish they sound compared to the output of other big US cities. Anyway, a great cheapo and if you don't already own a copy, grab this one!
BARBARA LYNN: Take Your Love And Run / (Until The) I'll Suffer * ATLANTIC, VG+, 20.- Euro, sold
Two great sides by the incredible Barbara Lynn, a left handed guitar picker and a superb vocalist, who recorded many great sides. Feautured is uptempo danceable 60's soul, flip it over for a nice ballad.
TAMMI TERRELL: This Old Heart Of Mine * MOTWON, M-, 20.- Euro
Uptempo Detroit 60's soul by the irresistable Tammi Terrell, who recorded some fine duets with Marvin Gaye and died way to young at age 25 of brain cancer.
JEAN CARN: Free Love * PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL, promo, M-, 20.- Euro
In my book the ultimate 70's Philly dance record; everything is in the right place here and Jean Carn really rides the song. Nothing short but the epitome of the Philly sound and every DJ should own a copy of this. Period.
FLOATERS AND SHU-GA: For Your Love * FEE, VG++ very close to M-, 20.- Euro
Detroit stepper of the highest order and cheap too. The label design alone is worth the asking price, but this is no art exhibtion here; it's in the grooves that counts and to my ears, this sounds brillinat.
BOBBY CALDWELL: What You Won't Do For Love * CLOUDS, M-, 20.- Euro
Probably unplayed copy of this TK-distributed Florida midtempo 70's gem. A record, that seems to be epitomizing the sound of the sunshine state in the 70's. A must have for any DJ or collector!
ROSCOE ROBINSON: (Standing In) The Safety Zone * PAULA, VG++, 20.- Euro
Great southern soul collectable from 1973. Roscoe Robinson was an underrated singer, who recorded some remarkable sides for Wand records and Sound Stage 7.
Two stepper from 1981 produced by Clarence Reid and another proof, that quality doesn't have to break the bank. Clean copy in it's original distribution sleeve.
MARVIN GAYE: You're The Man * TAMLA, promo, red wax, VG+, 15.- Euro
Great looking Tamla promo from 1972 and a song never released on LP in it's time. Excellent funky soul by Marvin backed up by Bohannon and his band and definitely the nicest way to own this masterpiece.
EDDIE FLOYD: No, No, No * SAFICE, VG++ close to M-, 15.- Euro
Pre Stax Eddie Floyd deep soul record with churchy vocals and a dead slow 6/8 Beat. A great record, if you like your stuff from the dark side. Record would be M-, but has a tiny non audible surface mark at the end of the slow side.
TIMOTHY WILSON: These Are The Things That Make Me Know She's Gone * SKY DISC, VG, label damage, 15.- Euro
Super soulful down- to midtempo soul by the great Timothy Wilson. A fantastic song, that lets his voice shine. Also recorded by Howard Tate on Turntable, but this version got the guts. Great playing VG copy with many mild surface marks, but nothing deep. Check the soundbyte!
AL DOWNING: I'm Just Nobody * POLYDOR, Made in Germany, Vinyl VG++ / Sleeve: M-, 15.- Euro
Whoever designed this picture sleeve should be tarred and feathered, graphic design straight from german hell! But the musical content is in total contrast to the visual aspect; fabulous and very dancefloor friendly 70's soul by Big Al Downing. Check the soundbyte!
SAM WAYMON: It Be's That Way Sometimes / If You Say So * RCA, promo, M-, 15.- Euro
Over looked early 70's sound, that reminds me a bit of Jon Luciens work. Two fine sides back to back. I have a weak spot for the great produced ballad on the flip.
ROSCOE ROBINSON: What You're Doin' To Me * WAND, VG+, drill hole in lbl, 15.- Euro, sold
Totally great Northern Soul dancer, that sounds amazing to these ears. Brassy uptempo 60's soul with Roscoe riding the rhythm in his unique style. Way better than many big money rarities. Don't sleep on of the finest cheapos around!
BEVERLY CROSBY: You Can Be My Lover / Promises Promises * BAREBACK, M-, 15.- Euro,. sold
Two fantastic 70's dance sides back to back from 1977. Way better than it's price tag and of course on the same label as the legendary Wil Collins & Willpower "Anything I Can Do". Great value for your money and a recomendation from my side!
RICHARD BERRY & THE SOUL SEARCHERS: Breaking In A New Heart / Go Go Girl * AMC, VG+, 15.- Euro
Los Angeles 6/8 beat ballad, that ticks all the boxes. Just too good to be true, the flipside isn't too bad either. An uptempo dance tune, that might raise some eyebrows too, but it's all about the fabulous ballad side here.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS: Welcome To The World * PHIL-L.A. OF SOUL, VG++, reversed labels, 12.- Euro
Great funky soul on the national, Jamie distributed release. It first came out on a local label named Phoenix. This copy has reversed labels, so the instrumental (Part II) plays the vocal version and vice versa
HOT BUSH Tell Me That You Will * APA, M-, 12.- Euro
Unplayed stock copy o this T.K. distributed Florida 70's soul gem. A stepper of the highest order and cheaper then all the stupid useless reissues flooding the market these days.
DONNY GERARD: He's Always Somewhere Around * GREEDY, M-, 12.- Euro, sold
One of the very best things you can buy for next to nothing. A 70's dancer, that sounds like 3 figures, a label design by an unknown maestro and the song was published by "Joyfully Sad Music" /what a name for a publishing company!), honestly, what more do you want?
A catchy 70's soul dance record and surely something that would fetch big bucks if it was rare. Reggie Saddler and Harvey Fuqua produced this, Fuqua best known for his Motown involvement while Reggie Saddler is well known among collectors for his highly collectable releases for Aquarius, De-Lite and his Northern classic on Panther, he played guitar in this group while Janice Barnett took the lead vocals. Great little record, that doesn't break the bank.
LATIMORE: Let's Straighten It Out * GLADES, VG++, 10.- Euro, sold
Great and soulful midtempo track with a Fender Rhodes setting thetone, played by the man himself. Gwen McCrae recorded the song later on, but Benny Latimore's version has the guts for me. Miami soul never sounded better!
SOUL CHILDREN: Don't Take My Kindness For Weakness * STAX/BELLAPHOn, made in Germany, M-, 10.- Euro, sold
German company Bellaphon purchased the rights to release the Stax catalogue in the 70's and came up with the series "Double Hitter" for their investment. They failed to release the good sides of the label with the exception of this record. "Don't Take My Kindness..." is a fantastic super soulful southern dance sound and it's pressed on thick vinyl and sounds way better than the US Stax release due to the expert work of Miss Brüggemann, the cutter of "Schallplatten Schneid Technik GmbH", her work is comparable to the masterclass of early Decca, Columbia and Blue Note recordings. Sorry for being an audiophile nerd here.
THE THIRD TIME AROUND: Soon Everything Is Gonna Be Alright * DENINE, VG++, 10.- Euro
Great 70's Northern Soulm produced by Warren Schatz, who recorded this song under his own name on a rare solid centre 45 on Disco-Soul. Schatz was mainly a producer for RCA and a songwriter with an immense output.
To order: PM me . Records will be reserved on a strict first come, first served basis.

I recomend registration for all orders over 50.- Euro for additional cost of 3.- Euros.

Unfortunately it has many small marks and plays crackly, especially during the first few bars, but it's a unique piece of vinyl and a nice addition to the pile of "Soul releases from strange parts of the world".

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
HIGH SOCIETY: I Can't Believe / You Can't Hide The Real You * U.S.A., strong VG+, 125.- Euro, soldExcellent Chicago group soul crossover winner with an equally good, funkier flip.
Crossover soul from the top shelf and this copy is as clean as it gets!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
TROY: And Tomorrow Means Another Day We're Apart * COLUMBIA, promo, wol, M-, 125.- Euro

JAMES WALSH GYPSY BAND: Cuz It's You Girl * RCA, Testpress, M-, 125.- Euro
Minneapolis Modern Soul classic on a clean RCA Testpress. Matrix reads: PB-11403 A / PA-11403-C. First played during the Stafford days and funny enough also from a testpress.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
SLY SLICK & WICKED: All I Want Is You * EPIC, promo, M-, 100.- Euro
Midtempo Modern Soul from the top shelf. Produced to perfection by Dunn Pearson and a cover of the Four Flights on Almeria, that was released a year before the Sly Slick & Wicked adapted the song. I prefer this version by a country mile due to the smooth and slick production and the perfect harmonies by this outstanding group.

MERLE SPEARS: I Want To Know * ATLANTIC, demo, VG+, 80.- Euro, soldBanging uptempo R&B Northern Soul for the dancefloor. Great sounding and really nice looking in it's original company sleeve.

Vinyl has several mild marks, but plays like a champ.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
BOBBY HEBB: You Want To Change Me * PHILIPS; Promo, VG+, 75.- Euro
Clean looking copy, but slightly hissy during the first few rotations. Why oh why did the record industry invented styrene? Anyway, Gamble & Huff recorded this Northern Soul gem in Philly and this is Bobby's best dancer.
soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/bobbyhebbyouwantto1.mp3
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
BOBBY FREEMAN: I'll Never Fall In Love Again * AUTUMN, VG to VG+, labels as shown, 75.- Euro
Two 1965 Sly Stone sides back to back. "I'll Never fall In Love Again" is a great dancer and found fame on the Northern Soul circuit. Vinyl has superficial surface marks and plays very strong VG+.
soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/bobbyfreemanillneverfall1.mp3
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
LYNN TANNER: Moonlight Girl / Swanee River * SHO-BOAT, VG, 75.- Euro
Belgian Popcorn is a mystery to me, but the internet says, that this record belongs to this genre and it's rare too. One side is rather midtempo and a popcorn sound, flip it over for a raunchy R&B take on "Swanee River".
soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/lynntannermoonlight.mp3
soundfile 2: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/lynntannerswanee.mp3
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

A prime example of black music in transition to what we call soul and something, that should work very well in the hands of the right DJ.
soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/beverlymckaybayyoure.mp3
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
CURTIS MAYFIELD: Tripping Out * RSO, Promo, VG to VG+, 60.- Euro

soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/curtsitrippin.mp3
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
THE OHIO PLAYERS: You Don't Mean It / Trespassing * COMPASS, M-, sticker on either side of the label, 50.-
As a Northern Soul fan, you will be familiar with Towanda Barnes raunchy version of "You Don't Mean It" on A&M released in 1969. This is the first release of this great song from 1967 by the mighty Ohio Players. Great uptempo sounds, that ticks all the boxes. Flip it over for another song, that got covered later on by the Skull Snaps for their legendary LP on GSF. Vinyl is super clean except one tiny surface mark, that does not sound at all.
soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/ohioplayersyoudont.mp3

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
WILLIE TEE: Sweet Thing / Man That I Am * GATUR, VG+/VG, H2O damaged labels, 50.- Euro, on hold
Awesome funky soul by New Orleans legend Willie Tee on his own Gatur label. This is the misspelled version, credited to "Willie Lee". Hurricane Kathrina did some damage to the labels. Flipside plays with mild clicks, but it's all about "Sweet Thing" anyway.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
EVELYN LEGRAND: I Got Caught / High And Dry * S.P.Q.R., M-, 50.- Euro
Most likely this record comes from the decks of Lenis Guess from Norfolk/Virginia. Two great uptempo R&Bish sides by a lady, who only released this one record. I'm pretty sure she gave name to Frank Guida's Legrand label, which was connected to S.P.Q.R., but I have no further information.
soundfile 1: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/evelynlegrandigotcaught.mp3

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

N/WT. 14 KARAT BLACK: Ain't Nothin' But A Habit * LUNA, promo, M-, 50.- Euro, soldA record as good as the Carstairs "It Really Hurts Me Girl" and other funky edged dancers, that got exposure on the soul scene, but it never got any wider recognition for reasons unknown. Great blasting early 70's sound with killer horn riffs, fantastic vocals and a superb dance beat. File under underplayed secret weapon for the DJ with enough balls to play fresh tunes.
soundfile: https://hamburgcitysoul.com/upload/14karatblackaintnothing.mp3
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
DEBBIE TAYLOR: Just Don't Pay / I Don't Wanna Leave You * ARISTA, M-, black ink spots on either side of the label, 50.- Euro, soldSoul heaven on both sides!

All three of Tony Ashley's 45s are great and this is his debut, that helped him get a contract with Decca records, where he released two more mindblowing 45s.

SUGAR PIE DESANTO: Soulful Dress * CHECKER, VG+, 25.- Euro, soldNot sure where the fantasy prices on discogs for this come from, but here is this classic mod soul dancer for a fair price in very fine nick. Top side is VG++, while the forgettable flipside has an inaudible surface mark.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
TRADEWINDS: Strange TRIUMPH M-, 25.- Euro, soldAnother Philly record, that graced the decks of Colin Curtis and Ian Levine during the Mecca days. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

WOOD BRASS & STEEL: Hey What's That You Say * ASTROSCOPE, VG++, 20.- Euro, soldThis is the band who played on arguably on one of the finest soul LPs ever recorded; the self titled Skull Snaps LP on GSF.
