Truly Smith - This Is The First Time
good info from Grant for you and it is hard starting a collection now ( or again after many years away ) but be careful and look HARD around before you buy as prices are all over the shop and it is so easy to buy the first copy you see then 3 weeks later theres 3 or 4 coming up, as per other discussions a lot of the records are not rare its just getting out and about to see them in boxes.........dealers are good but they have to make a living, take a breathe dont rush and get on some regular mailing lists as its amazing how often you see a record on a list that appears again a month later !!!! the rare ones are rare but a lot of average records have a big price spread.....good hunting its all part of the fun.

Truly Smith - This Is The First Time
have you tried Pete Smith at planet records ? or Rob Messer or Swifty who are fair dealers ? whatever you do dont spend £95 on it with them............it will turn up, they always do. you might find its not there anyway...

Truly Smith - This Is The First Time
was watching with interest but no time to comment before, I have also seen the $180 listing (from Vinly record store).....suggest do not even think about buying from them as they are always well over the top on price and they have a habit of when they do underprice the record mysteriously is not available anymore....this has happened on two occasions.... they also sold me a boot of LIFE ''tell me why'' ( which was not stated as a boot )for £ 30 which seemed a result (until I got it ) and when I returned it they said I should have known it was a boot because of the price, my answer to that was if its a boot why not a tenner cos thats all its worth ...... buyer beware as always but they carry enough soul on their list to not be cute and not say its a boot, THEY KNOW EXACTLY what they are doing !!!!

The Crazy World of Northen Soul Record Prices
I find a good way is to work with one or two good/quality dealers that you know wont b***shit you, it is possible... and listen to what they say in that how many copies they have had through their hands, i.e. if a dealer says its not rare cos he has had 5 ( or more ) copies through his hands over a period of time, then without being gullible its a fair comment. also taking into account that if one dealer has had that many there are other dealers with as good as if not better sources who MUST have had a few copies as well. Unfortunately what Brian says is the most relevant and this is why prices are going crazy, nobody wants to sell them !! guess we'll have to wait 20 to 25 years till we all start dropping off then there'll be a flood of records on the market and the prices will crash......I'm gonna take mine with me

The Crazy World of Northen Soul Record Prices
I would love a copy of JMM but havent seen it on any lists but then again am I getting the right lists ? it surely cant be that rare . If anybody knows where there is one up for grabs then please tell me so I can decide whether to sell the kids ( again ) or maybe the wife this time.............the problem is what price now ( is this now the new market price as set by e-bay ) or are there still sensible people selling them for what they are really worth.... no doubt when I find one the answer will come out but did you see the condition of the one on e-bay !!!! finally the JM guide as already mentioned is only a tool but sometimes it makes no sense one way or the other......
