On Gina Sedman's new album 1972, the song 'Like A Whisper' stands out, a gentle mid-tempo song that doesn't try too hard and is all the more powerful for it.

Sounds a bit like Stephanie Mills

A standout from the new Durand Jones and the Indications album 'Flowers'.

This has an early 1970s uptempo Soul sound similar to Major Harris, The Artistocrats, The Originals etc. Sounds more full and powerful on the album than Youtube will represent.

Darn it, just saw that Mike posted the same track earlier. Feel free to remove this duplicate post, I cannot see a delete option.

I can certainly hear "Shake It Up" by The Vibrations in "If Not For Love". Just listened to whole album today and it's very good.

  3. The second series of The Gold on BBC1 is equally as good as the first. Probably the best series I've seen this year (along with Mob Land)

  4. RIP Walter. Another one of greats has sadly left us. So many great songs. Unfortunately, most people only know It's A Love Thing and And The Beat Goes on, but there was so much more. I particularly like this Gary Taylor penned song from 1987.

Congrats to those who saw them live. I never got the chance. Their last visit to the UK was about 8 years ago.

  5. Another season ends and bloody Gareth tops the league again, despite a slow start. I finish in a record 2nd place for me. Despite a slow start and a wobble towards the end I'm pleased with the progress I'm finally making after 20+ years of playing 😀.

It's all good fun and it was good to see 21 of us take part. Let's start again in two months time.

    Oh, congratulations Gareth 😀

Nice to see Neil Reed listed here, doesn't really get enough praise, both sides being choice selects and brilliant raw Detroit productions and Tony Gregory having a moment, truly underrated and worth having a dig through his catalogue of soulful bits and bobs. I would say this is probably one of the most in demand titles from the modern stable which Butch plays and the only place I've ever heard it is the 100 club.

Does Butch really play this? Must be based on rarity. I can't unsee the photo and think of Liquid Gold.

  7. RIP Mr Ayers. So many great songs. Prolific live performer in the UK.

This is him at the Forum, Kentish Town in 2016

He's also been a big influence on Louie Vega and other House acts in more recent times

  8. Quite a few. It depends what you want on modern soul. A lot don't get advertised here. Some examples below.

    Cotswold Park Soul weekender – Fri 21st – Sun 23rd February 2025

Margate Soul Festival 2024 | Margate Soul Weekender

Blackpool International Soul Festival 8 – Goldsoul

Not sure if this has been mentioned but looking for something to watch the other night we stumbled upon "Lee".  Stars Kate Winslet about the former model turned wartime photographer Lee Miller.  Excellent film.

    What platform is this on?

Just watched the first episode , a one hour pilot , of the new series "The Penguin".

Gotham based show but without the usual comic book style , thoroughly enjoyable start , and I had no clue as to the lead actor until I googled the cast ...

I'm 4 episodes in and really enjoying it much more than I thought I would. I'm fascinated by Colin Farrell's performance.
