  1. I don't think Clarkie was playing there as late as 1996. The first time I went was 1997 and wasn't part of the team then. The two warm up do's I remember were Devil's Den in a pun behind Selridges run by Terry and Ivor Jones and The Water rats by Kings Cross - both excellent events in their own right. The 100 Club was playing some great stuff then too - unreleased RCA, Ben E. King plus well chosen oldies.

  2. Very sad. Very gifted man. Another one who was unable to fulfill his full potential perhaps for reasons beyond his control. Anyone got a full discography of his work? He did quite a few vocal guest slots on other peoples CDs over the last few years.

  3. This site really shows just how polarised views on a track can be. Not surprised about the comments from the usual suspects, but some comments from the more enlightened amongst us have left me wondering.... I don't get how a very soulful and classy track that's been around for donkey's years like Do The World A Favour can be lined up for a such a keyboard kicking....no.gif yeah it might be well past its play by date, and a little tired, but it's still a great tune.....you all should know better and hangs your heads in shame..... laugh.gif

....and if a 45 release puts it on more play lists in Northern rooms.... great, 'cos that's around 4 less minutes of the same old same old and 2nd rate tunes that usually get dished up.... thumbsup.gif

Agreed Cliff. It just seems odd that it's in vogue again all of a sudden.smile.gif

Why has this record become popular again all of a sudden. It's over 25 years old for a start and has had its day in the sun at least twice already. It even came out on the Village Soul CD six years ago. Hardly a new modern monster. However, I quite like it and think it's pretty good. Much better than the Jacqueline Williams version - now that would wind some of you up lol.biggrin.gif

  5. ...It's not a cover - it's a revival. There's a big difference.

Unlike the A side, which most definitely was a cover. And a very good one at that....

A cover can only be called a cover if it comes out at the same time as, or within a matter of weeks of, the original. For example, the Moody Blues' 'Go Now' - recorded a matter of weeks after Bessie Banks' inferior original - is a cover, whereas Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' - recorded 15 years after Gloria Jones - is a revival.

Pedantic, I know, but accurate nonetheless!thumbup.gif

I've never heard such crap laugh.gif

  6. As I said before, if it could be done well, learnt from previous mistakes and successes, doesn't carry northern baggage (e.g. frets about format, northern soul dj's playing in the modern room because they have a few records from the 70s biggrin.gif :-)), and respects the differences between the genres - then maybe someone could make a go of it. thumbsup.gif

  7. I've stopped going to allnighters since they closed the modern rooms down. I used to think it was the best of both worlds when it was done well. Bretby, Stoke and Winsford all did it very well. They offered two distinct rooms and there some punters who enjoyed them both. The music policy was modern i.e. new and recent releases. This left a gap for those who preferred to hear crossover / modern oldies / call it what you will. An attempt to cater for this occurred at the July oldies allnighter at Stoke but didn't work very well in that room. In fact, I recall Colin Curtis rescuing the first one by playing a cracking set of mostly recent stuff. The Stoke allnighter also moved to an anthems fest and started to put off the punters who made it immensely popular in the first place.

The tent in Fleetwood began in 2002 (I think) and catered for the modern oldies - very well. In fact, so well that the pendulum appeared to swing back to that genre. The gradual closure of modern rooms as they ran out of steam due to a number of factors, music policy reverting to oldies, competition from weekenders or soul nights, etc.

Could it be a go-er again? Possibly, if done well with the right DJ's and clear music policy and some tolerance from the punters. I don't travel so much these days as I don't think the long journey from Kent is worthwhile for a do that ends at 2am. I might do if something new was on offer that catered for my tastes but I'm probably in a minority.

  8. I think most of the prime reasoms have been listed - money, travel, age/a;;nighter, etc. I, personally, haven't been for 12 years so am guilty too. Have you ever considered holding an all dayer Ady? That might be more appealing to quite a number of people.

  9. LEON WARE I THINK PRODUCED THE WHATS GOING ON ALBUM ,SO IS THE I WANNA BE WHERE YOU ARE TRACK THE SAME AS MARVIN'S?

Leon Ware produced Marvin's I Want You LP which included a song called I Wanna Be Where You Are but it's different to his own song of the same title.

All Leon Ware stuff is brilliant. Musical Massage is my favourite LP of his but I also love the well known stuff like "That's Why I Came To California". he;s got his own distinctive style and is a very talented man. Check out the Leon Ware and Friends CD that came out on Expansion last year. There's some awesome stuff on there by Chuck Jackson, Rockie Robbins and others.

Also, my musical tastes have evolved over the years - like the music:D

  10. I think the original aspiration when the book came out ten years ago was to write a second volume 80s to the present day (1999/2000 whenever it was). This would've been very interesting. However, I think anyone who wanted to update it for the last 10 years would have a hell of a tough job on their hands in view of the many different directions the scene has gone since then.

  11. I always put Ron Hall in the same bracket as "Lord" - Alexander O'Neal & "That's What Love Does" - Vince Montana - they seem to sit well together.

There is still plenty of good modern soul dance music out there !!thumbsup.gif

You could do if you wanted to insert one crap tune in there lol biggrin.gif . Personally I can't stand "Lord" but the Vince Montana will stand the test of time for many years to comethumbsup.gif
