  1. I have a copy on VHS but the sound quality on a big system would be awful. Maybe you could see if a legit DVD has been issued yet?
  2. I'd say it's definitely a good time to sell - ebay prices are just crackers
  3. I've always thought "life" was overlooked - its a gorgeous track. My fave 70's track is still "This love is real". As for the 60's:"I'm the one to do it" was peak of perfection for me. Just thinking about that Fender Rhodes/guitar intro gives me gooseys.
  4. Good question. 20 years ago I sold a Darryl Banks London demo for about £100. I'd probably get £1000 for it today... That's a tenfold increase. So what will that disc go for in another 20 years? £10,000... I doubt it. When this generation of collecters is satisfied then I personally don't think we'll see another Just mho
  5. Marvellettes version is on their Sophisticated Soul LP which is chock full of gorgeous Ashford and Simpson goodies. Highly recommended
  6. Sorry that was me above
  7. Paul r - chuckling here coz for 35 years I've been trying to figure what that line is in "Scratchy". My best guess is.... "Capital, please do it again, won't you ..." Could be a mile off though! Any thoughts?
  8. Nice one Hippo - great taste. another one springs to mind - hope I've got it right, jimmy conwell, too much.... "What started out to be such a good thing Has taken my heart and replaced it with string I'm smoking more but enjoying it less I get a whole lot of sleep But I don't get enough rest..."
  9. I got your picture hangin' on the wall It can't see or come to me when I call your name I realize it's just a picture in a frame.... Mmmm I just love that lyric. Wondered if you would share your favourite line or two of lyric ....
  10. Brian - you got it thank you! What a gorgeous track - how can it have slipped me by!!!!!
  11. Jodie Chuckling here... it wasn't Mr. Egg... but theres no cheaper breckie in Brum. Essential after a hard nights clubbin! Actually it was Red Peppers at the mailbox. Tabitha I think I might go back... it was such a perfect track.
  12. Nice post tone5446. Still chuckling. Them were the days. 6 Blueys for a quid. Eee by gum, youngsters today... don't know they're bloody born !
  13. So I'm in a restaurant in Brum last night and the background music is quite good soul, jazz funk etc. Anyway in a sandwich between James Brown and Bob and Earl this Motown thing comes on that I've never heard before and it just floored me. Lovely, lovely song. But what the hell is it? No point asking in the restaurant. Can't give you many clues I'm afraid but here goes... Its a girl with girl backing vocals... or a girl group. Would be mid sixties definitely. It's upper mid tempo - not a stomper. Its got lovely strings. Here's the only worthwhile clue... towards the end I heard the lead vocal sing the line "eternally"... it was at a key moment... the track had almost left her in the clear, but I dont think that was the title. And no it wasn't the Charmaines track. She had a lovely light voice... More Brenda than Gladys. Could almost be a latter day Marvelettes I would say definitely Motown top to bottom and certainly was not a big hit. Help! I must track this song down its absolutely bloody gorgeous! Ravings of a mad man over. HELP!
  14. And whats with all the northern stuff on that new drama (angels/nurses?) Landslide was all over the promos and Mrs Lady Dayo reckons there were loads of tracks featured as incidental music too
  15. Nice one Tabitha. It doesn't have to be first time plays... could be anything (soul related!) lol I don't think I was there first time it was played at the Mecca. But word soon reached the Midlands about this amazing new record that Levine was playing. My memory is that everyone loved it right away... odd that because it was a very different sound at the time.
  16. I wish I'd been there when.... Sandi Sheldon got its first ever play. That must have been something special to hear that record first time out. What's your wish.....
  17. First time I heard it was at Wigan. Went home raving about it to a pal. He pulled it off his shelf and said "you can't possibly mean this can you?!" Shame faced, I admitted he had the right tune. I made out I was off my face at the time and it probably sounded better over big speakers. "Well if they're playing this kind of crap," he replied, "I'm glad i'm off the scene". He gave me his British copy and I sold it for him next week at a fiver. Cherry People. Anyone wanna buy a copy on Heritage? lol
  18. Always got those two freds mixed up!
  19. I know the tempo has changed, but here's a supplementary question. Does that mean that if Terrible Tom had been discovered this week on, say, an unreleased acetate, that it wouldn't get played? We also had a healthy regard for poppy records with the right beat. Someone I know rates Paul Anka as the greatest Northern Soul record of all time. - and it's hard to argue with. So what if that was a 2004 discovery? Would it be big today? I know it wasn't all roses in the glory days. I mean, "Don't say maybe maybe" was a well known record to collectors from at least 1971, yet I don't recall it ever being a "big sound". But, Beverley Ann certainly was. Whats my point? I'm not sure! lol Perhaps we were just soooo spoilt. .
  20. Hi RG Thanks for that. I did a quick Google and it looks like Fred Hughes (oo wee baby) was one of the Casanova Two. Totally agree, and although it's 30 years since I've heard the track, it was a brilliant record. Now trying to find it on a cd compilation.
  21. Hi there Hippo - thanks very much for posting that mp3... its the first chance I've had to hear that. What a nice record. Back to my original question though.... would it have rammed the dance floor at the Torch? From my perspective, with a 20 year break from the scene, I would say probably not. In fact, I'd stick my neck out and say that, had it been discovered in '72, Mello Souls would have been a marginal record at best. Maybe its a grower, but I guess I was praying for another Sandi Sheldon or Yvonne Baker. Ah well...
  22. Chuckling here at those prices for a soul pack record! Thanks Brett.
  23. Brett Forgive the rather short reply. Thats the tune I was trying to think of. Thanks so much. Can someone help me out on the Casino Brothers thing? It was big around 1973... Right, now I'm off to post a provocative little thread!
  24. I remember seeing at least 25 MGM copies at Oasis in Brum. I know there were loads on market stalls everywhere, and it only ever listed around a quid. But does anyone think that, had it been mega rare, it would have been one of the biggest records of all time? Oh, in case you hadn't guessed, its Spyder Turner's "I can't make it anymore". Brilliance from the first chord.... agree? And while we're at it, any other way too plentiful sounds that didn't take off simply because of that? What else was overlooked because it was too common? PS I'm not talking about 20 quid records. Think of the REAL cheapies....
  25. A friend of mine had a lovely slow/mid tempo record yonks ago which I tried without success to prise out of his clutches. I don't think it was terribly rare, just a nice tune. Trouble is I've forgotten both the title and artist! I'm pretty sure it was on a DC label. By somebody like Karl and the Dreams? Or maybe even Karl and the DC's? Title might have been "Do what you gotta do" or something postive like that. Any clues anyone? It's daft I know, but I wake up at night trying to remember it! And while I'm showing my ignorance, can someone tell me what was the correct title/artist of the Wigan cover-up by the Casino Brothers, "We've got to keep on" or something similar. I recall it was huge, I ought to know it... My brain is definitely not what it was! Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!
