  1. Promatics - Think I'm Gonna Let You Go - Brown Door  :good:

Whats your record of the weekend?

    link

Sounds interesting Chalky, is it the same label as Marvin Holmes/Dorothy Morrison?

Strange choice of tunes, having read some of the debates here recently have made me disillusioned re Northern a bit again so to cheer me up have been playing happy disco music!

D Train - Your The One For Me (always liked it as disco hit but when heard it played on full club system in middle of house set it blew me away)

D Train Walk On By - Just a great treatment of a great song, disco heaven.

and finally a record I always turn to when needing cheered up

The Dells Walk On By - Deep soul treatment of a great song (can you tell I like this song) it just lifts my spirits everytime.

These have been on repeat on my turntable!!

    Cheers

  2. I have Ben E King Cant Break The News on Greek Atlantic!! Given its failure in America, christ knows why it was released there!!

Colin Law brought a load of Arethas/Sam & Daves etc on Greek and knowing my liking for other than Northern kindly gave me them as gift, never knew this was in among them till recently!!

    Cheers

  3. I believe this guy had a ponytail also.....

    link

I was just about to say what the f**k have you started Mr Smith, all this talk of Madchester etc, was also about to say I only know about soul but then noticed Byrnie has outed me below!! :yes:yes.gif

Have been watching this with delight today but too busy to join in! I have had the occasional pony tail, one fine specimen, one pathetic attempt,

Hope you are well and your finger is healing nicely! Must say I do look quite handsome in that picture. :P

Hi Byrnie, Not sure Colin went to Bradford all that often but quite an impressive roll call neverthe less, they were good times as were the nights in Venus (with cross dressing Elton dancing around Pepsi!) and Venus/Renaissance. Fave memory of Mansfield is going down with Kerso and slagging him all the way for playing that horrible anthem to be for the Labour party (Things will Get Better) and saying how I hated Sasha to then be seen dancing around at end of night, arms raised to Sasha playing very record!!!

Have a good night out and see you soon, your legendary breakfast from a few weeks ago is still being talked out in the O'Connor household, say Hi to Kelly from us.

Jamie cant believe we never met as that was the very corner we used to hang at Bradford, sometimes to be seen flat out on pool table after taking one of Kersos headache tablets.

Have a good one tonight Jamie, I ma working yet another weekend so will be looking for details of the evenings!!

    Cheers

  4. when i said the latter days of wigan being poor and stafford raising the quality again, i was refering to comments from Keb Darge. When Wigan closed I was 7 years old so as I said I was no authority on the scene. Looking at that list it makes your mouth water and I wish I was there to enjoy it.  I hope people didnt take me the wrong way as I was only raising comment with a view for clarification.

    Shane

    link

Not at all Shane, I think thats the point, people over years have talked about Wigan being pop and its generally accepted Shane, so its good to discuss thatg openly. By the time I started going most of the pop stuff had dissapeared (except for one obvious culprit and even he wasnt too bad all the time) and I was mystified by all the talk of Wigan playing pop.

Cheers, hope to see you sometime.

  5. Some great stuff played in those last two years at wigan,as good as anything before or after, unfortunatley wigan will always have it knockers, but so what there was crap played at every venue.Look forward to seeing you sat nite shane will lend you some old wigan tapes m8.

    link

Spot on, some interesting points here, unfortunately my boss has my nose to grindstone these days so cant contribute, have found things I agree and disagree with here, but definitely the point about Wigans last 2 years, I only started going last 2 years and for 18 months before end went nearly every Saturday, some times with half a dozen dancing on main floor, but it set my taste for life, some of the best music ever played (some still getting played) in those times.

    Cheers

    Jock

Also realise its another thread but are we not missing the point a little having a Stafford revival, was that not the whole point Stafford was against, Having said that, since that was my best years on scene I will go along and reminisce no doubt!!!

  6. Ok i`m looking for your 70`s tips, sounds that you could recommend.

It dont matter if there cheap or expensive its the quality that counts.

    Garv.

I did a couple of cdrs of 70's/80' s for other forum, nothing too rare but if you want copies pm me your address and will send you them.

  7. I think Dave Withers was quite a bit before Guy, great record though and like you Gareth one I would like back!

Ooops should have read the thread from top not bottom, see you had already identified Mr Withers (superhero) as man, apologies!! :)

Hi there just seen your question, cant remember the exact address but if you head down to Bleeker St. its round there, just ask someone, there are a number of shops in that area (as well as gay book shops and gay sex toys shops so you may want to choose your shop), also a great album shop just round corner from house of oldies, very expensive but dollars good and owner can be a bit grumpy, and one called rocket science that sells a lot of the new reissues and some nice 70's stuff. Other option is grab a soho phone directory and they should be in there.

    Happy hunting.

  9. Got a white demo (amongst other things) off Bernie Golding in lieu of wages after DJing for him. As it was still covered I thought it was some crap thet Bernie was trying to fob me off with. He found 3/4 of them in Levines records he said.

Don't know what happened to him but he was a very funny guy.

Daybreak was Tyrone Edwards 'Search This World'

And I always thought that Gary Rushbrooke was a Forest fan. Didn't he have a tattoo ?

By the way, did the thread on Cody Marshall give any adea of rarity or value ?

    Steve

    link

Didnt remember it with Searling but thats no surprise as these were my early days.

Bernie was an interesting guy to say the least, he also found 2 Shadows on the rare label (Golden Sounds?) in Levines collection, so a very rare record at that point and 5 copies, 2 on an unknown label all found at "bernies barn" in IL's collection. He invited me round to look at records a couple of times before I knew source and I never got round to it, realised my mistake years later when I heard the stories from Guy and Kebs visits!

Well remembered re Daybreak, my memory wrong again

Re Gary that rings bell re the footie but Dean meets up regularly these days, unless its one of Deans imaginary friends, which would not surprise me knowing Dean (No grassing me up on that comment Kitch or Byrnie!). :shhh:

  10. Nice thread, in my days as Allanton last hour dj (Jim knew I was certain to clear everyone out before the end) I must admit I indulged myself and played some very slow stuff not just as enders, despite maximum heckling from Glenrothes posse. However 1st year ender was always Esther Phillipsor OJays, like every nighter at that time, decided to be a bit different and played 4 Tops - Ask The Lonely. Actually went down a storm and is it probably in my top 1 it fair warmed my heart! :lamsey:

    Cheers

  11. What is this snobbery thing that cheap means no good...... You're so right - it should be played out more and it rammed the floor at the 100 on Saturday night when I teamed it up with the Minits 'Still a part of me'........let's start a 'PLAY PATTIE WARD' campaign and boycott all nighters that don't give it an airing  Jo

    link

Interestingly this is one of the last records I played before giving up my reluctant dj act. even more curiously at the 100 club also some point in late 80's. Didnt go down too well the few times I played it elsewhere.

This was one of 3 discs I bought in one night supplied by Andy Whitmore in the crossover vein that Andy was championing long before the term was invented (just to bore you further the others were Bernard Smith on Spectrum and Mr Nightingales fav Masterpiece, nice haul) another of great taste and influence on lots of people was Andy, glad to see he seemed to go down well at recent Manchester, well worth the plaudits.

    Cheers nostalgically wistful :lamsey:

  12. Top Cat !

And anybody remeber RS Jimmy Georgetowns c/u ?

    link

I do remember a Jimmy Georgetowns in name, thought that was the Shadows on USA for Withers so am obviously getting confused, please feel free to enlighten me!!

Keeping on initial question another 2 are Al Johnson and Hit Men and also whatever Daybreak was (forget for now) had same title, more u think original post has a very good point!!

    Cheers

    Jock

PS Steve, in answer to question you asked re Gary R on other post, havent spoken to him since he packed in ut but Dean Anderson still sees him every week to go and watch Man Utd, no obvious comments about they are obviously not from Manchester.

  13. Okay, anybody even heard it/remember it.  :lamsey:

    link

I remember it very well, covered as Pierre Hunt if I remember rightly, absolutely loved it at time but discussed on other thread as one of those records not sure how well it would have travelled!! Sound clip anyone!

    Cheers

    Jock

  14. I think they both had it covered as different artists initially.  Colin certainly played it at the Winding Wheel covered as Tommy Navarro, sure there is a review in Shades Of Soul from sometime in '87 where this is mentioed.  Later both covered as same but thought it was covered as Jimmy/James Conwell.

Having trouble remembering the Kim (?) disc  whistling.gif

    link

You are right (again  ) , SJST was covered as James Conwell, the flip side however Jim W had covered as Gene McDaniels, cant remember if Colin played that out, will ask tonight and also the name of the other disc.

    Cheers

    Jock

  15. Like you say Hammy too many wanna be DJ's happy to chase the same records as everyone else, throw money at records like Bill Bush which in essence should be more like £150 or less due to the number of copies about.  Time we had more individuals, with their own identity given a chance and not just those with the same big money (often over priced) indemanders as everyone else.

Ralph Graham biggie for Colin Law and I think Jim Tennant (is that right Jock?) around '87.

    link

Yes at least that, certainly Colin had this, got of Jim Wensoira when he was selling covered as Gene Mcdaniels I think, Jim had only played it a few times, became a monster for COlin, same time as Kim ?? I Saw You last Night which Colin found in States, I covered as Valerie Simpson and it was monster for him, have heard this is getting a few spins now.

    Cheers

    Jock

PS Agree with Chalky and Hammys comments, especially too many djs, I am astounded by the ratio, even from my distant involvement these days.

  16. Guten Morgan Mr 'Connor,

It was an old Gilly record that came from Popcorn way back when, currently being played by Sam and Mick H.

    link

    Halo Tony,

No surprise there, man of immpeccable taste, not the most soulful record maybe but proper Northern, Gilly was so influential, not surprised as usual to see him not getting the credit he deserves. Christian you should try and meet Gilly sometime, it might help you understand Northern Soul a little better.

All roads lead back to Gilly, yet again. What remarkable, impeccable taste the man had! (and still has) A real unsung hero of the scene, and a lovely bloke too! whistling.gif

    link

See comments above Trev, totally agree, nice to see that some people do give credit where its due, as I would expect from you, see you soon ,and say hi to your other half.

    Yours bemusedly

    Jock

  17.

I know I've had a bid, so the above statements probably seem a bit hypocritcal, but I assure you I was bidding for a rare record, not a particularly good one.

    Billy whistling.gif

    link

So are you saying you dont like it but were buying it because its rare, does that mean, having seen your name as dj, you would play something out just because its rare?

This f*****g scene has gone mad.

    :lol::lol:

    Jock

  18. Was Andee Philadelphia ?

    link

This is a strange label, I have a Might Sam 45 which looks fine, but also a William Bell Marching Off To War that was on Stax and would have no reason to be on this label, also did a very boot looking 45 of Drifters _ Gotta Pay Your Dues not appear on this? whistling.gif:lol:

    Any ideas ?

    Cheers

    Jock

  19. Ahh,

that might make sense. I used to knock about with Dave a bit in the 70s and would definately have played it to him before I went off to do other things in the 80s.

I also remember talking to some pals about cover up potential and we spoke about the Sequins or the Vonettes. Maybe someone actually went and did it.

    Cheeers mate

    Godz

    link

I was just about to come back and say I think it may have been the Vonnetes!

For confirmation try the anoraks corner website, sure he will have it listed there.

Just dug it out for a spin, sounds good again, not my normal type of Northern thing but always think its got some ooomph i it. Flip it over, quite liked this side also in an offkey sort of way!!

    Cheers

    Jock

  20. Fairly sure Gary R (27th time but will say it again, very underrated dj, had the sort of taste that was to come to the fore later by the time he had packed in unfortunately) was way before Keb in playing this, although Keb probably had more success.

    Cheers

    Jock
