Back in stock: SCEPTER WAND FOREVER - a book by Steve Guarnori £29.99 A genuinely essential and comprehensive reference for any serious collector of R&B and soul music. Steve Guarnori traces the history of the first US label to be run by a female: Scepter Records and its subsidiary labels. The story details the growth of Scepter in the 1960s in New York with signings like Dionne Warwick, B.J. Thomas and a host of others, through the early days of disco music in the 1970s, and to the company's eventual demise in 1976. This book features the stories of the artists, and the people involved in the company, including a heavy focus on soul and R&B output. Scepter's success with acts like The Shirelles, Dionne Warwick, B.J. Thomas, B.T. Express, The Kingsmen and others was mirrored by many more non-sellers and flops. The book explores the hits and the misses, the labels that were distributed by Scepter, the artists, and the company’s story. Including comments from many of the people involved with the label over its existence (1.6kg, large format illustrated, 502 pages). Link to order: https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/scepter-wand-forever-steve-guarnori Also: I SEARCHED FOR SOUL AND FOUND THE STARS - a new book by Richard Gilbert £24.95 Richard "Gilly" Gilbert was one of the first of a handful of serious fans and collectors from the UK northern soul scene to travel to Detroit in search of 1960s soul vinyl and the discover the artists associated with them. In this book, the author presents a collection of stories about his US trips and, importantly, the relationships and long-term friendships he formed with the recording stars and music industry leaders like Popcorn Wylie, Dave Hamilton, the family of Ollie McLaughlin, and others. In Gilly's words: "Few people in life can get to meet their heroes and spend quality time with those people who, through their music, helped form our lives." Illustrated with colour photos of the artists, producers, the studios, label scans and historical memorabilia, this book will be pure enlightenment for anyone who assumed northern soul was finished with in the 1980s. Furthermore, it demonstrates how a youth subculture truly connected with its idols, and contributed in its own way to the preservation of wider soul music history. This hardback book is complemented by the inclusion of a FREE limited edition copy (while stocks last) of the Kent CD "Dave Hamilton's Soul" featuring Little Ann, Toby Lark, Ortheia Barnes, the Tokays and more (hardback, gloss colour illustrations, 147 pages).
