  1. (Hope this is the right section?)

I'm looking to buy a Loricraft or VPI RCM in excellent condition. If anyone has one for sale - or knows someone who does - please let me know.

    Thanks!

Several on e-bay at the moment under record cleaning machines. thumbsup.gif Ricardo.

  2. Got a John Drevars Expression - The closer she gets - M.G. M. issue in mint condition, for 10P in the mid seventies from 'Eddies odds and ends' on Wellington road in Rhyl. Also an early Discatron for a couple of quid from the same shop.

    Ricardo

Did you ever play the John Drevars on the Discatron ? . I used to go to that shop when i was at school at Blessed Edward Jones High school !

    best

    Pete Morgan

    Hi Pete,

Any record played on 'that thing' was ruined after a few plays. I sold the Discatron to Nick Lyde, and kept the John Drevars until it went big @ the 100 Club then sold it. Nick and I also got a lot more good records (and another Discatron but the later type) from Eddies, prior to his heart transplant. I wish the shop was still there.

  4. Hang on Jim,don't over egg it..laugh.gif .Candi Staton - Young hearts run free?..but overall the better venue ...for me...thumbsup.gif

The first big Mecca record by Candi Staton was 'Now you've got the upper hand'. Used to do both venues in one night, & buy records @ the Mecca then sell them @ 100% profit in Wigan. Preffered the Mecca as it was musically superior.

  5. I would like to make an appeal on behalf of those of us that find these bright lights normally on sellers tables and sometimes on the decks to be carefully positioned pointing down rather than across a room.

I am sure I am not the only one that finds these lights very intrusive , they can bring on migraines and similar reactions to strobe lights for some people.

    thanks

Donna Summers beaten you too it, she even did a record about it.! yes.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

  6. I know that this is just Soul Source and I know that not every one will has voted but there is a 95.39% vote agreeing that there are too many venues.

I'm not too sure that denying that anything is wrong is also going to be constructive.

I'm not too convinced that asking people just to have a positive attitude is going to fix any thing?

    As far as I can see there are 3 steps;

    1. Agree that there is a problem or agree that there isn't a problem

    2. Identify the problem

    3. Look for solutions

If we are unable or unwilling to get passed step 1 then there is no point in continuing?

Nice thread, and a hard one to summarise, with regard to creating a 'fix.' As a former employee of a large White goods manufacturer (which has now ceased trading in the UK) we used a methodology to solve similar problems, this was called Six Sigma. The main thrust of this was D.M.A.I.C. (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control.) The Important part here being CONTROL. It's no good spending time "putting things right" if you don't put in control to stop it reverting back to how it was. As there's never been any CONTROL over the way things on the scene have gone previously, (autonomy) I can't see anything being done to stem the tide now. To me it's now a case of "Too many Chiefs, & not enough Indians" & "The Lunatics have taken over the Assylum."

  9. Although at least one copy did sneak out as I saw it one night at Blackpool Mecca.

Can't remember who had it but I think Ady might remember, I think he was there that night?

Never seen or heard of it since, except in conversations on here.

    Alf Billingham perhaps ? thumbsup.gif

  10. no more than £125-150, maybe less though

    rob.h

I've seen this @ around the £200 mark lately, a fantastic 'Blue eyed soul double header.' If you can find one @ £125 buy it.

  11. Motown studio charts would be extremely rare and hard to come by. Guitarist Dennis Coffey, who played on many Detroit sessions told me that musicians were forbidden to take the charts away.

I spoke to Dennis at some length about the recording side of things in the city for Keith's book Groovesville USA, but unfortunately a lot of it was left out due to lack of space.

Songwriters would get arrangers to produce charts for them - the majority of the songs recorded at Motown had detailed arrangements with specific parts and lines written out for individual musicians. There would often be up to four guitarists on a session so obviously it made sense for all the musicians to have a clear idea of what they would be doing.

    Stuart

Spot on there Stuart, Motown bass lines for example, were very complex and the Corporation in no way wanted other producers & labels to copy them, or emulate their unique sound, hence keeping them 'in house' However some producers still managed to copy to some degree, for example The Sonatas - Going down the road, being a copy of 'Aint that perculiar' to name one. There are many others.

  13. The first mass produced ones I saw were when the Torch All-nighters took off but in Manchester some kids would go to the Wheel around 1970 with something of a uniform - Brutus short sleeve check shirt with small button and turned up hem on sleeves. Prince of Wales checked trousers, wing tip black brogues and a black blazer with a customised Twisted Wheel badge. These were often lavishly embroidered jobs that they had made at those old fashioned mens tailors that did regimental badges and ties.

The Twisted Wheel badges were also available at the Oasis Market in central M/CR in the downstairs section, at the end by the door, but as you rightly say a lot of people had them custom made. Later on there were custom made ones for the Blackpool Mecca, and I still have one.
