  1. What a fantastic bit of Detroit Northern. It would never do for us all to like the same tunes!!!

Does it matter how many copies there are? Most that slag it off would quicky get a new white cardboard sleeve and pretty it up and insert the tune in pride of place in their record box in the blink of an eye.

PS I think you will find that Sam played this prior to 2002

"What a fantastic bit of Detroit Northern"

    Quite so!

  2. IF THERE ARE SIX OTHERS.....PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTHS ARE AND LETS SEE EM'.....DONT BE AFRAID NOW.....ITS LIKE THE "UNDISCOVERED WIGAN FOOTAGE" AND ALL THOSE THOUSANDS OF PICCYS THAT PEOPLE BEGRUDGINGLY DONT WANT TO DIVULGE OR DISCUSS.......WHY EVEN MENTION THE FACT IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO SHOW THEM...

    AM I RIGHT SOULSOURCERS?????

WE KNOW SAM GOT HIS OFF DES & ADEY, MICK AQQUIRED HIS SHORTLY AFTERWARDS......APPOLOGIES TO THE OTHER GUY WITH REGARDS TO THERE BEING THREE BUT IF THIS IS NOT A "3RD FRANK WILSON DISCOVERED BY TWO HIP-HOP COLLECTORS IN CHICAGO" WIND-UP......MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN BECAUSE RIDICULE IS A WORD VERY EASILY FURNISHED ON THIS SCENE!.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I feel the truth needs to be told. The real Northern Soul scene is gone, its actually been dead for nigh on 10 years. It all started when a group of the undead were brought back to life, their mission to create an exact image of a time long gone, reflecting the best 18 months of their life's, when they had been Soulies keeping the faith. 30 years later, the faith had mysteriously returned, having been lost in an old Addidas hold all under the stairs for all those years. They soon multiplied, bringing back many other lost souls into the family, marching uniformly to their nearest Working Mans club, they could march as it was never more than 15 minutes away from home.

Their initial tactic was smothering those who had survived the barren years of the 80's and 90's with talc bombs and then finally suffocating the remaining survivors with their beer towels, holding up there new leader by the vest straps, spinning him around their heads and crowning them with the exact replica bootleg of Frank Wilson, celebrating by dancing long into the night, well until half past midnight anyway as that's the latest licence the club could get.

Now all thats left is a Matrix type illusion of a Northern scene, with all these alien head quarters based around the country, with a high concentration in East Midlands alleged, there are a few pockets of revolutionaries carrying on, again allegedly as don't want them to be caught, rumour says you need to look for the horses in Wolverhampton (although be careful here, there are already aliens imitating the real thing on some weeks), the smell of old jazz cats in London, and the dodgiest toilets in Stoke, they are out there but they are in danger of being overrun/

It needs to be saved, someone is needed to lead the revolution again, where is your Neo, Is he (or she) among the few remaining survivors of the guerilla Northern Scene who retreated to far off places licking their wounds and caressing carefully their vinyl, but remember nothing is as it seems, the ones wearing the long leather coats this time are likely to be the baddies..............

I don't visit this site too often now because of the high level of moderation. Thus I have only just seen this post due to the recent resurrection of the thread.

I have to say, belatedly Jock, this is one of the best posts on the site, and certainly one of your most humorous!

Get out of the cellar and entertain us some more!

  4. JACKIE WILSON --- IT ONLY HAPPENS (WHEN I LOOK AT YOU)

Damn, I was taken in by this thread!

I thought "modern" meant modern, quality, current!

But no .. it means shabby 70's/80's/90's disco/party/LCD music like The Futures, Jeff Perry and Alfie feckin Davison!

This is the stuff that has reduced our scene to a stag night piss-up.

Mind you, I do like King Tutt!

(if you are gonna call with threats, do it soon as I'm out in half an hour) x

  5. I love tapes. I watched Hi Fidelity last night and the bit about the art of making a mix tape is so true. Making someone a cd is too easy to do, even from vinyl. I love tapes but it saddens me to say my tape listening days are nearly over as my wife bought me a cd player for the car this Christmas.

Downloads are horrible things. I've never gone near them. When i was a teenager you had to make the effort to accumulate a selection of cd's that you could be proud to show your friends. And I was very proud of my cd collection. Every album showed that I'd been interested by that artist and made the effort to track down their material and give it a good listen to. And I did listen to it as I'd just parted with £15 for my troubles. And it excited me to get home and listen to it.

Now a days its very common for teenagers to have a computer with maybe 10,000 tracks on it. Most of which they will never listen to. So the musical journey then I went on that took me from a hits of the 80's double tape in 1988 to rare soul in 2004 is just not happening for the youth of today. They just download everything without really listening to anything.

As the musical format changes it allows the listener to become more blase'. You can't skip a vinyl record so you listen to it properly. Same with tapes. Downloading is an ignorant way of aquiring music in my opinion. Some things shouldn't be that convenient.

But vinyl has been absent for a while. I'm 28 and started on tapes then cds. Vinyl never played a part in my youth.

How many genres are enjoyed through vinyl the way rare soul is? Is it so important in the grand scale of things?

    A well imformed post.

Especially gratifying for one so relatively young.

Note the word "relatively".. it's meant as a term of respect.

Anybody else enjoy "Looking For Eric"?

  6. Quite an entertaining thread, this...

As per usual you're really showing your ignorance here James.

For a start, as anyone who knows Tim Brown well will tell you, he's the last guy to pay decent commissions on sales and he prides himself on being the tightest of the tight LOL. All that's happened is I had some philosophical discussions with Tim about why he would want to keep records that he either doesn't like or wouldn't ever play and wouldn't he be better off liberating 'em to someone else who could use them and was willing to pay Tim's price. As a result a load of rare records have been freed up.

Tim sets the prices. Not me. My commission is tiny and believe you me it's hard-earned. He wanted to keep his own collection seperate from his usual Anglo American business and therefore wanted to target people who may really want particular records that otherwise would simply remain on his shelves forever. Using me to put the feelers out and contacting people has resulted in him parting with titles that he simply would never have particularly thought about selling. There's been quite a few surprises. The whole point of doing it this way was because he doesn't have a lot of time at the moment and therefore rather than getting hundreds of calls from numerous people, I'll call him and discuss who wants what and it's a relatively simple yes, no or maybe.

You've really got the wrong end of the stick here and why you would want to accuse me of half the stuff you've mentioned is just beyond me. I don't get it. I'm pretty sure that everyone I've dealt with thus far is delighted to get their hands on these records and Tim's happy because he got the price he wanted. Nobody is pressured - Tim gives the price he wants and people either say ay or nay. What he chooses to pay in commission is up to him and nobody else's business anyway.

It's NOT an auction. So it's not a question of 'bidding'. Which part of the process do you not understand? Tim sets the price and if you want the record you say yes and if you don't you say no. Tim's not negotiating on the prices he sets for his own collection hence I have no input on the prices he sets. Anyone can ask Tim and he'll say the same.

What really kind of upsets me is that I genuinely pressured Tim on both the records you wanted and wasted a lot of time. The Precisions was a straight no but I kept badgering him. He'd rather keep the Gwen Owens anyway - there's not many copies around that don't jump which is why he set such a high premium on it and that was a 10 minute discussion in itself. You and I had a chain of perfectly reasonable messages between us, I went away for 36 hours and came back to a character assassination that was completely unwarranted.

Terms like "deflationary action", "leaching resources out the scene" and "the fragile eco system of rare soul" suggest that maybe you misunderstand the mechanics of this process. Tim's been selling rare Northern for the last 30 years and I've traded records of all types most of my life, so nothing new or revoltionary is happening here. It's merely been a resource to free up some records which were wasted on Tim's shelves and most people are happy to have the opportunity to get their hands on their wants.

It seems to me that you have a few issues mate. An anger-management course may be an idea. What's not a good idea is to deliberately try and antagonise people with personal remarks that are basically nasty. What possible upside can there be by going through life with that attitude?

You seem to enjoy making unnecessarily long posts: Is this the written equivalent of "enjoying the sound of your own voice"?

Having just read through this thread for the first time, I have to say you come across as the SS version of Pvt. Walker from "Dad's Army".. ie a bit of a spiv!

  7. Another case of different strokes.....

We've already had two essays (though one must do better), so I'll be brief....

Comparing and contrasting music policy always stirs things up, especially as in this case, the policies are at the extreme ends of the scale, one stuck in the past and the other refreshingly progressive. If you don't like the music policy, then stay away, simple as..........

It seems that some people can dish out criticism, but can't take it....

I don't know Kev Such but I had a number of phone conversations when I first started Creative Soul.....he wasn't happy that I had started a "competing" night on his doorstep, he even tried to make the point that his night was progressive............yeah right!!

'Cos everyone knows that we share the same policy :boxing:

When I read the original post I was a bit mentally dismissive of it, but your offering tends to make me think it may have some merit. Why post what you did unless it was meant as a spoiler borne of sour grapes?

    As for this bit:

"It seems that some people can dish out criticism, but can't take it...."

That strikes me as a bit rich considering your reaction to opinions on last year's Lifeline weekender. :P

  8. Sad to see only 1 All Dayer on Today (BH Monday) and its more of a mod do than strictly northern.

Strange that as we've aged all nighters remain reasonably strong but all dayers seem to be few & far between.

When was the last truly great all dayer?

The last truly great all-dayer was held about three years ago in Sleaford, Lincs Col.

It was arranged through this site in aid of the "Gambian Soul Club"

Quality music from the late 50's to present day.

No celebrity DJ's, but nevertheless well attended and a few quid raised for a good cause, and that was before the charity business became popular.

  9. True.

    But what does 'agreat' mean?

You do know that I aim to wind the feck out of you simply for the fact that you have needlessly involved yo.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!

How many records have you got mate?

    "A great..".

    Typo. Obvious really.

Wind away "mate". It's a good passtime.

  10. Dave!!

    Dave!!

    Oh Dave!!!

    ha ha

    That was hilarious.

No, honest....if you feel your shitty superiority complex kicking in at any given moment, breathe deeply.

    Love in....Hate out!!

    Funny.

    "Superiority complex"?

You have agreat sense of irony!
