  3. It was all good, hind sight is a wonderful thing, some cherry pick their periods of time at WC cos some periods now are considered more worthy than others, I went from '77 until mid '81 ish, didnt go every weekend, some months once, some months every Saturday, only ever did 2 Friday oldies nights.....for me I thought it was all bloody brilliant...hind sight tells me some of the records were pop, but TBH as a 15 year old I didnt really have a clue about soul music, it was all about dancing & feeling part of an underground scene, my musical education came later, on the whole & mostly after WC had closed its doors....some people think we're impressed when they say, WC was crap between so n so n so n so, what they really mean is other factors stopped them attending & they feel they need some sort of excuse to explain away the lost years.... in some circles certain folk try to impress other folk with thier 'soulful credentials', most of which they have read on here anyway & didnt experience personally....so, to conclude WC was just another soul venue playing the records of the time, one thing I will say tho, is I would much rather attend an Allnighter than a soul night & the Mecca was a soul night, it broke tunes for the Nighters to play....

  6. No way that it 'gnaws at my soul' ....... in the 70's I was into bringing up my family & getting on at work ......

...OHH, AND LISTENING TO REAL MUSIC; Curtis Mayfield, Leroy Hutson, Reffa, Al Green, Bobby Womack, Latimore, O'Jays, Joe Simon, Gwen McCrae, Tyrone Davis, Marvin Gaye, Willie Hutch, Candi Staton, Spinners, Emotions, Tommy Tate, Donny Hathaway ......... DEFFO NOT the pop trash played at Wigan.

....... if I went to a soul night back then, I wanted to enjoy the music that was being played .... so Wigan was not a destination for me.

Roburt, I'm afraid thats the same excuse used by many to justify thier abscences from the scene.  There are hundreds of Rare Soul fans who have managed to balance thier proffessional & family life without ever having to let either suffer.  I also think you are doing many people a terrible dis service by inferring that just because they went WC or other Northern/Rare Soul venues that they didnt also listed to 'real' soul music as you put it.

NS/Rare Soul is/was & always will be predominantly a 'black' dance music scene, occasionaly pop records get played if they have the right sound for the time & there have always been good 'blue eyed' & 'brown eyed' soul records played.

I'm not one for hankering back to the past constantly, WC was just another venue, albeit one of the most successful & best remembered.  But there were hundreds & hundreds of fantastic soul records played there, that massively out weigh the 'of the time' pop played, there have always been dodgy records played from every era, but to write off all the fantastic soul music played there in one sweeping, ill informed & incorrect statement is to do the venue a terrible dis service, not to mention the DJ's who on the whole, played fantastic, inovative soulful dance music.

Whist Im sure its unintentional, your soul 'superiority' complex tends to wind people up, so maybe a better choice of words & how you put things would result in a more positive response to some of your posts.

  8. Musically, which I think most of us got into it for, it must be the preservation and documentation of a lot of black US 60s and 70s music.

Without the dedication and methodology of the Northern collectors who firstly scoured the US through buying trips and then through Internet contact, a sizeable chunk of wonderful music would have been lost to the world. Some would have come out or been appreciated in other ways but the fanaticism and motivation of Northern collectors, be it for money, glory or enjoyment, meant that many sides were discovered and preserved which would have been trashed without this appreciation. No doubt the B sides have also been saved for deep or southern soul appreciation too.

Though it seems crass to admit it, the crazy prices Northern collectors are prepared to pay for their treasures or trophies eventually awoke most US record dealers to the fact that these odd discs were worth seeking out and saving and many a gem got onto the rare soul world in this manner too.

To me, equally important is the fact that many artists now know the work they did was of musical value to a hidden transatlantic bunch of fans who were still dancing and loving their work several decades after it was deemed to be a flop in its home country. I know singers like Lorraine Chandler, Dean Parrish, Maxine Brown, Mary Love, Gigi and the Charmaines, The Velvelettes, Spencer Wiggins and Bettye Lavette are very appreciative of this.

I'll only touch on the social side of it but to have a dance floor full of originally mainly working class kids and young adults dancing on their own to emotionally charged soul music was quite a phenomenon that we can all feel proud of. It was liberating for men in particular many years before it became commonplace in British life.

And don't even get me started on master tapes and acetates.

What he said....with bells on !!!

  9. The Rix meister does it again...absolutely fantastic, Andy, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the time & effort you put in to these projects & for sharing with us mere mortals, its because of people like you Andy, that these people can eventually gain the proper respect they deserve for thier work & hopefully realise what pleasure they have given....

    Just brilliant, thank you

  10. It gets in a groove for sure, but I always want something more from it musically...a sax break or key changes...something, anything to make it really stand out. I need more from the producer and arranger, even though they have a fine pedigree of work under their belts. I have an alternate take of it with a slightly different vocal arrangement, but alas the backing track remains the same.

    :g:

I'll take the alt take of ya hands mate if ya dont want it....lol
