The 'Birdcage' in Portsmouth was in an area called Eastney, it was knocked down many years ago to make way for flats.

The club was like many in towns & cities all over Britain at the time, groups & artists that appeared at the 'Wheel' & other hip clubs, also appeared at the 'Birdcage'.

With regard to the New Religeon LP by Jimmy James, local legend has it that the Pompey Mods were some of the bands best fans, as the Vagabonds tour van was coming down Portsdown Hill into Portsmouth to do a late night gig at the Birdgage (coming from an earlier gig at the Marguee with the Who,where apparently they 'borrowed' some of the Who's equipment !) which was the old road into Portsmouth before the motorways, the local Mods had taken upon themselves to flyer/advertise the gig themselves & there were hand made posters every where on lamp posts etc advertising Jimmy James & the Vagabonds 'The New Religeon'.

As a slight aside many years ago when I first moved from the Midlands to the Portsmouth area I was intrigued as to why this area had always been a relative 'Hotspot' for Northern & Rare Soul, whilst in the local library researching the 'Birdcage' on the microfish & asking the Library workers questions, a man approached me & spoke to me for several minuites about the 'Birdcage', one of the stories he told me was about the night the club got busted by the local DS, the security at the club was done by moonlighting Royal Marines from the local barracks & when the DS tried to gain entry to the club in plain clothes the Royal Marines 'Kicked off' big time, as the fracas on the door ensued, the local ,'faces' ensured the gear dissappeared down the fire escape at the back.

Years ago I wrote a small article for Soul Up North Fanzine entitled 'Soul Down South' that included some of this information, if anyone has this issue handy, if they could post it up I would be grateful.

Gilly, I have friends in Pompey who would know more about the Birdcage, if you would like me to hook you up let me know.

BTW about 10 years ago there was a massive 'Birdcage' reunion on Southsea Pier, I was amazed at the amount of people who attended & the wonderful pictues that decorated the foyer from the Birdcage & that era. Very few people from these clubs ever went on to attend NS clubs & to this day, many turn thier noses up at NS for some reason.

There was also another very influential club in the Fratton area of Portsmouth called the Marriner (later the Sound Barrier) which held soul & Northern Soul Nights from the late 6ts into the 7ts, years later we held illegal Allnighters there in the 8ts/9ts, the building still stands with the club intact, but has no licence & the ownwer have no intention to reopen.

    Hope this helps buddy

I have just found out that Shiptown soul legend Ida Sands has been taken seriously ill. Ida is a wonderful & talented woman, who besides recording some fantastic soul records contributed not only to the Civil Rights movement, but also championed womens rights generally. Ida for many years also worked to get better recognition for the artists that recorded for Noah Biggs Shiptown/Howbig labels in Norfolk Virginia & I'm honoured to have met Ida when I lived in Norfolk VA.

ReNardo Biggs, Ida's son has asked that we all pray for Ida to make a full recovery & I hope he doesnt mind that I have posted this information, please pray, think positive thoughts & lets hope with all our hearts that Ida makes a recovery.

I will post more information as I receive it, but if ReNardo is reading this pse update us, as & when & make sure Ida knows all of her fans on Soul Source are willing her to get better.

    Regards

  3. It'd probably be at least a year before its release was fitted in. The alternative is for somebody to bootleg it (which has already happened to this small degree) and the people who made it would get sod all.

Would much prefer the high quality legitimate release to a boot for sure.............

  4. Anyone got (sale/trade) a Lenny Williams - I couldn't find nobody - Fantasy ???

    Regards

    Greg

Flanny had one for sale a while back for a good price, not sure if he still has it but worth a punt, he's on here mate.............bloody great record BTW. Gonna miss ya at the 100 Club, as I work abroad at the mo, but gutted as I know you'll tear the f*cker up..........good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but this 'Carver' was part of some one elses collection, that as a favour the seller was selling on thier behalf, along with a load of other bits.

If this had been done specifically to deceive or purely for profit then I would be a bit more vocal as to the morals, but from what I can gather the seller is as suprised as anyone as to the end price ?.

I appreciate that a 'bootleg' is a 'bootleg' regardless & maybe the seller should have been more aware of what they were doing, but I dont think there was any 'intent' what so ever.

How about somebody putting a scan up or sending me any details on the recording's owners and then it can have a proper well documented release on CD and vinyl with the records history fully explained and some handy spin offs to the people who actually made the music. Just like the recent Salt and Pepper release?

Whilst I think eventually this would be a fine idea, it hasnt reached any where near its full potential yet.......I know, I know........Andy, Butch etc have played it for years, but lets give people a chance to catch up before its re - released, they'll be other collectors, dealers, DJ's hot on the trail, so a few fresh copies wouldnt go amiss before its killed as a 'play' record.

Also anyone with a a 'spare', I'd sell a kidney for one in any playable condition laugh.gif.

  7. You sure? I though it went to Butch, know he still has it. There are couple of others

Ok mate, just spoke to Allen...........he sold it to Carl F, not sure what happened to it after that, but from what you say can only assume Butch has it now ? & yes, it was an uncredited acetate, so the Patti Austin title is for play purposes.

I have about 8 tapes from this era. See if you can identify who the DJ was on the below from 1990.

    "You Need Love"

"I Don't Wanna Cry No More" Dave Charles (before I knew the real title!)

"The Harlem Tremble" Frank Foster (with the dj saying this was the first time playing it out)

"You'll Always Be In Style" Patti Austin

    etc etc

Later on I switch the tape off and put it back on at the 100 Club (this is 1990.... ) and there is

Yuan Williams (or Wang Williams) with the Mailbox cover up...

Its great stuff - I'm loving listening to it again!

Recording it all onto i tunes on my pc.

It you want copies let me know, its no problem.

    Ian

Sounds like Shifty, maybe a little too early for him tho', altho he did end up with the Patti Austin, think Dean Anderson owned it before Shifty (?) so maybe Dean...........& Juan Williams was not a cover up..........played by Ady at the 100 Club occasionally years before it got real recognition.

As an aside, the PA was an acetate & wasnt credited, so might not be her anyway, if my memory serves me right ?.

That sounds like it could have been moi...................

    Russ

On the James Brown - (you) or whoever ask the crowd to "give it a chance" ........

Either cos of it's slow start.........or perhaps you didnt trust your judgement.......:sweatingbullets:

I play this one out all the time by the way as a result of hearing it then!

Yep, thats me...........can I get a copy please............BTW I trust my judgement, but you have to understand back then at the 100 Club these were risky plays & not well known at the time.

  11. russ,

thanks for your concern... but rest assured that the sound track to my life is safely held in UK issues along with my memories of King Mojo, Twisted Wheel, Attic, etc. And "her indoors" is a recent convert to our music [by recent I mean since she met me 16yrs ago] so accompanies me to local soul nights, though allnighters are out; cocoa and sleep calls much earlier than it used to.

Regarding age: well a bus pass is arriving shortly, along with medical bills I reckon. I'd buy some incontinence pants if I were you! Sounds messy.

I gotta dance to keep from crying,

  12. This is tough, but she's right and I am at "that age..."

I've tucked away those I cant live without and will be offering the rest through this and other channels over the coming weeks, months, years. As a 'collector' not dealer these are [in all but a few cases] my only copies.

Having been caught out on several occasions by 'generous' graders, I've graded as accurately as possible and 'down-graded' if in doubt.

    Generally...

    m- means only the slightest of marks if any;

    ex means minor marks, soiled label, or slightly compromised sound quality;

    vg+ has several marks to vinyl but plays fine, or looks ex but plays with some noise;

...I'll also describe to clarify and add scans/ sounds of particular 45s.

And to make things easy postage to UK addresses is included for orders over £15; under add £1.

Overseas = add £2 for shipping to EC; add £3 for the rest of the world.

    souledagepensioner@mac.com

I'll check messages/emails and agree sales etc in the order that they arrive.

    Cheque or PayPal are fine.

I'm still new to this selling game so please be patient and gentle.
