I've got a mint copy of the techniques on UK Treasure isle and it is a fairly quiet recording, got no life in it compared to say Barbwire or Mosquito 1 which have got the same backing. I've never seen a copy of My Conversation for sale and I've been buying reggae since Liquidator came out. You can easily find an import of Ting A Ling, if not I'll sell you mine for a fiver if I've still got it

Yes, Jimmy Webb has quite a pedigree. I actually LOVE "Wichita Lineman" and "McCarthur Park", (though some people appear to hate the latter song with a passion!) - though I'm not a big fan of "By The Tme I Get To Phoenix" - even by Doris Duke or Isaac Hayes! However, he arranged and produced the classic "Sunshower" album for Thelma Houston and also an album on the Supremes in 1972.
Jimmy Webb wrote a couple of other great Northern tunes - Don Ray Sampson - baby Come back, and The Contessas - I keep on Keepin On, both on the "E" label.

I bought a copy recently and the chap I bought it off knew the history and the people who produced it, thought you might find this snippet of information interesting...
Larry Allen was from Greensburg, PA. Jerry Reed, who owned the label, had 1000 copies pressed. 500 as Larry Allen and 500 as L. Allen. It was released in the fall of 1965.
Jerry got frustrated because the record didn't sell and at the time he had an old car that he was junking, and he threw around 900 copies of the record into the trunk to be crushed and remelted.

I got an email from Chcuk Bernard's daughter and both her and her dad were blown away by the fact there was some footage of him that I'd put on youtube. The impression I got was that she thought no-one had ever heard of him. If anyone wants to interview him about his recordings for Satellite, Zodiac, Brunswick, Maverick etc, I'll put you in touch.

The desperate lengths we would go to to make recordings in those days!!!
Presumably those reel to reel recordings were just done through a mike.
As recently as the mid-80's I can remember making up tapes for parties using tracks recorded through a mike off "Pick of the Pops".
I don't recall the sound quality being THAT bad.
MB
P.S. I am sure when I was a kid in our house we had a reel-to-reel tape recorder before we ever had a record player.
I remember coveting tape copies of the early Beatles albums that were in the window of our local record shop. I don't know what they would have cost - but it might as well have been a million pounds!!
Actually these were done using a kind of din-plug (is that what they were called) so it's actually a line-in recording. There's another one, an hour long Petula Clark live special! bet thats worth something. To Pet Clark fans. (I really like here mid 60's Pye cuts but wouldn't say I'm a fan)

I've actually got a couple of lost TOTP episodes on reel to reel tape. My ex wife's dad recorded them for her. I can't remember any soul acts but one has Pink Floyd doing See Emily Play and another features a Swedish group called Ola & The Janglers! There's also a full episode of Crackerjack with musical guests the Love Affair and Don Partridge. Oh and I've got all those Mike Raven shows on reel to reel too. Different source mind.

The Strange Story Of Larry Allen On Green Dolphin
in Look At Your Box
Cloth-ears abound, it's bloody brilliant, it's got everything necessary to make it absolutely classic Northern. Fantastic record, from the call to arms piano intro to the do it yourself backing vocals
