  1. Would like to hear some of these tunes. One of my faves at the moment is the Jamacan Soul version of "Make me yours" by Phyllis Dillon. Don't no much about it, availability, etc?

Got a few "other" versions of stuff on CD, would put them up here but don't have a clue how to do it! :P

    Top thread :P

    link

I had that a couple of times and sold it. It's one of the very first releases on Trojan, the original orange label with the crown logo. The other side is soul as well, that's why I didn't keep it, I was expecting top rocksteady

  2. OK I'll go through the records and tell you what I find...then I'll stick em on a cd which no doubt I'll give away for nothing :P

    first lot...

phillip james - wide awake in a dream (jerry jackson)

paragons - left with a broken heart (four tops)

thats just going through the 45's, I'll have a proper think later

  3. Night owl,for me pete, and a nice version of call on me,but diffarant title. :P

    link

I'm trying to find the 60's version of Night Owl, I don't know who it's by though, the one I've got is the same song but it's from about 1970 (by The Clarendonians).

There's a version of Call On Me by Jimmy Cliff on Fontana, is that it?

  4. Good point Shane...so easy to go off thread :P

Well starting with my list how many would be in yours?  I'm happy to remove "Sweeter...."  but my ears and feet tell me that The Champion is RnB and not "Bollocks" :P

    link

I didn't say The Champion was bollocks, I said your assumption that it could be classed as R&B is bollocks, and it is!

  5. Question, what is R&B crossover or whatever you call it,i though it is all R&B,it dont make any sence, anything with any gritt!in it is now R&B,I would prefere it be popcorn, and if anybody says im playing popcorn i would tell em`to f*****f no probblem,ie:soul stuff aint gonna get in the R&B charts again dont think so!,R&B is a mixture of music styles like soul, doo wapp,R&R,all black/race music

    link

Have you got a f*ckin space bar on your keyboard???

    :P

  6. Personally I've never liked this and hated the Popcorn Wylie songs even more. "Rosemary What Happened" is worse than Footsee imo. But then again, I never went to Wigan and never experienced hearing them at the time and place.

    link

I dunno if that makes a difference; I heard Rosemary before I went to Wigan but still loved it

  7. Posted

You know I collect reggae/rocksteday whatever, it's really amazing at some of the songs they did oin the 60's and early 70's, for instance this week I've had a female version of Compared To What and a 68 reggae version of Chuck Jackson's Good Things Come To Those Who Wait! Wouldn't have thought either of those was well known enough to cover. Also got Jamaican versions of things like Walking up a one way street, Left with a broken heart, See no evil speak no evil, Get ready, etc. Just thought I'd mention it.

  8. If you cast your mind back 2 weeks to my BRILLIANT whats the best unreleased track ever thread, it was indeed Betty Boo which I nomiated in the first posting.

She was definitely one of the Adorables. Got played the same couple of weeks as Hanky Panky by Popcorn Wylie. They hit us with too many newies in too short a space of time.

  9. wilson pickett.....one of the worst records to be played out imo. even worse than sugar dumpling and loving by the pound which are really awful imo.

    Shane

Hurrah! I've been saying this for years and years and no one has ever agreed with me!!!

  10. What are your top ten RnB records that have crossed over to be Northern Soul floor fillers?

    I guess mine are:

    I Can't Please You - Jimmy Robins

    I Can't Get Enough - Johnny Sayles

Sweeter Than The Day Before - The Valentinos

What Good Am I - Mickey Champion

    Sippin' Sorrow - Pearl Woods

My Baby Likes To Boogaloo - Don Gardner

If You Don't Come - Patience Valentine

    The Champion - Willie Mitchell

It's Your Voodoo Working - Charles Sheffield

I'm A Big Man - Big Daddy Rogers

How much change would I get from £1000 for that little lot?

    link

I don't get this. The following records were classed as Northern before anyone had associated the term R & B with this scene:

    I Can't Please You - Jimmy Robins

    I Can't Get Enough - Johnny Sayles

Sweeter Than The Day Before - The Valentinos

What Good Am I - Mickey Champion

    The Champion - Willie Mitchell

The Valentinos is about as out-and-out northern as you can get. The Champion, r & b?

    Load of bollocks...

  11. I said to a friend, I bet Pete-S has something to say about that  :P

He's playing me like a second hand fiddle Pete. And I'm squealing like a pig  :P

    link

He does that mate, he does that...

  12. would it be possible to see any of these lists Chalky? I'm especially interested in the Richard Domar catalogue

    cheers,

    Carl.

    link

I've got an RD catalogue from about 85 - when it was like really small size but about 50 pages...you can borrow it if you want
