  1. Bloody hell, brilliant version on the LP, is this better.  I have three excellent copies of the JA rocksteady version and they all hiss, does this play cleanly?  I'm dead jealous.

I'll send it up in a minute mate, see what you think, yes the other version is great but with these different backing vocals I think it just edges it. I've got the rocksteady version on UK Doctor Bird and the pressing isn't too bad really.

Wow, this is absolutely brilliant, some of you may know this from a Trojan compilation called Work Your Soul, it was originally an unreleased track on a US Heartbeat cd which I put them onto years ago, anyway I have a found a vinyl version and it's a totally different take; different lead vocals, extra female backing vocals and even the label looks ultra-cool. Will send a sound clip up later.

n.b. this is a soul track, not reggae

  3. Your right pete......I remember getting some tapes off you way back then, I really liked the record then, and still do.  I used to have both versions of it, now I don't have either......

Thank you John, there were loads and loads of unknowns on those tapes I used to do, Steve Jeffries took over the mantle really nowadays, having said that I listened to a few the other day and they were shockingly bad: Mally Page, Christine Holmes, Robbie Royal, Deano for goodness sake :wicked:

  4. Hello. I discovered this record in 1992. It came out of Vinyl Solution in Brighton. I reviewed it in Beatin Rhythm around issue 7 and got it into the Record Collector Price Guide. It was also me who found out she was Jackie Lee. This is fact, honestly. 13 years ago this was.

  5. This is impossible really because many tracks are not discovered by dj's, they are known to collectors first how tip the dj's off - for instance, The Champion is always associated with John Vincent but it wasn't him who discovered it...

  6. I'm sure this is another topic we've done before.

I charge £1.60 for 1 or 2 x 45s sent recorded. The actual postage cost is around £1.35 and the other 25p covers the cost of professional mailers, card stiffeners and printed adress / return labels etc.

Anything above this is plain greedy.

Agreed, and I charge exactly the same.

I won 3 oldies last week, from a seller in the UK, and he sent 3 separate invoices each charging £2.50 postage, obviously I said he was having a laugh and he said it was to pay someone for doing the post - heard that one before and I gave it the same reply as before. I got the postage down to £1.50 for the three, but there are many people I bet who wouldn't have argued and just paid up!

  7. Heres a bit of info mate:

"Moon Williams, the 27 year old East Ender, must surely be one of the most exciting soul singers to emerge in the country for many years. With dedicated guidance from his producer Kaplan Kaye, Moon Williams is now set to release his latest, and very commendable single. "I'm going to make an honest woman out of you" is a sophisticated soul sound, written by the very talented producer/singer Biddu, and one which will now bring Moon Williams the recognition he so richly deserves"

I remember this guy being on tv in the 70's on variety programs, the musical guest in the middle of sketch shows etc.

  8. I have had some of Mr Williams 45s on Djm over the last few years and have past them on to a mate who likes them  All the records i had all were Demos and came in a Picture sleve!and i can confirm the Guy is WHITE  There is a piture of him on the Pic Sleves if some one can post a scann if they have a copy laugh.gif

There's no picture of him on this sleeve unless he looks like the man in the moon

I know this guy had a few records on DJM but does anyone know the name of the one (or ones) that are currently being played? I have one called I Wanna Make An HOnest Woman Out Of You on DJM 10693, it's a very good (if there is such a thing) uptempo 'modern' dancer but not sure if thats the right one. Comes with a promo pic sleeve thing, and obviously is no use to me!

  10. Are the Intentions who recorded on Up Tight anything to do with the Philips / Kent outfit or a completely different group?

And on a totaly different topic, I have about a dozen Blues / Rnb 45s on the old yellow and black Pye label - the R&B series with those letters printed in the centre. Amongst them are a few EPs - would these have originally been issued with picture sleeves or just in regular record company ones?

Thanks as always for any help :shades:

    They should have sleeves mate.

As for the Intentions, they were a white group on Philips weren't they - from Philadelphia...that record dealer Dennis Brennan was in the group.

Before you decide to go down that road of numbers at venues let me just say there are more measures than volume alone.  I'd rather as people have said on other threads offer something different. In fact if you recall that was the reason the Station was set up. There was no point starting up another venue even 2 years ago that went down the road of offering the same as was already available elsewhere in the area. If all I wanted was a packed venue and the usual, I'd be going along to those venues as a punter, which I often do.

However  if you wish to continue to offer  Jctn 9 and  Goodyears type music , it  isn't a problem to me and you will certainly pull in punters who want no more than a good social night and a piss up till 2 am. I just feel  like  others do, judging from the phone calls we've had, and the messages on here, that it's unnecessary congestion in the same town, especially when with proper planning, it could be avoided.

I was answering the congestion question and then your misinterpretation of what I said.  I don't think I can explain it more clearly than that and I don't have to take it off list to address the comments you made. I stand by what one of the promoters told me in the phone conversation I had with him, only time will tell if he is a man of his word. As I said people will form their own opinions based on what they see and hear.

Anyway I have more important things to do,  this discussion is taking me away from some course work I have to do, so even if you don't follow this I won't be answering it again.

Gaye, can I just mention that I am in the smaller room playing ska and rocksteady and Jamaican R & B, NOBODY has ever attempted that round here, if that's not being different I don't know what is. Granted, it might be a disaster, but I think it's worth a try and quite a few people have been in touch about it.

I changed the wording on the advert slightly...

Studio 1 - The who's who of Black Country Soul Jocks

    Friday April 8th

    The Dudley Club

Waterloo Rd, off Wellington Rd, Dudley.

The first night at this wonderful venue (It's the Old Dudley Labour

Club, so has a big stage, wooden dancefloor, raised seating, and cheap

    Bar Prices.)

    Record Dealers welcome.

    Main Room

DJ line up: - Blue Max, Dave Rimmer, Little Scotty, John Pugh, Phil

    Richards, Woody, and Jamie Carr

    2nd Room

DJ Line up: Pete Smith playing a Ska & Soulful Rocksteady set - first

time at a Northern venue...90 minute set or until he's kicked off.

    Plus other guest soul DJ's.

  14. First I would like to reply to this by saying,  That I myself have no involvment in booking dates for the new studio 1 venue.

The only involvment I have had is to book DJs, if anyone has a problem with this then please phone the main promotors.

Secondly your comment about congestion in the midlands is true! but I myself along with blue max and woody, talk on a regular basis to the other promotors of the main soul nights

to make sure that we do not clash with each other, which of course makes sense.

Yes there are going to be some nights when venue's do clash but at the end of the day it is called freedom of choice.....

just because you put a soul night on does,nt mean that ppl will turn up, ppl are not  sheep, I find that most soul fans are quite capable of making their own decisions of where to go!!

Thats why as a promotor and dj myself,. I try to give the ppl what they want.

Thats why we have now taken the decision to move from the Black Horse in wolverhampton to a new, far superior venue which will give ppl comfortable surroundings, better dance floor, cheaper beer, secure car park with cctv, good sound system, and a good line up of DJs.

And further to that, might I just add..... I have negotiated a new 500 room allnighter in birmingham everything is in place for this venue, except one thing a date, because I am doing my utmost not to clash with other allnighters.

Therefore I repeat I did not book the dates for the Studio 1 club, As some ppl think I have, so wherever you go be safe, enjoy yourself, thats what soul dues are all about.

  15. The german Bear Family label will release all episodes on DVDs over the next year or so. There will be 4 or 5 episodes on each DVD. The first 3 volumes has already appeared. Check them out:

    https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...ng=&p=BVD+20128

Haven't bought them myself yet, but judging by the extremely high standard which Bear Family usually has, I'm sure these DVDs are very nice indeed.

Can't believe these are finally getting an official release. I'll be buying these. The videos cost about £80 back in 96.

  16. Another fine investment by me then ya big tart.    It says £175 on the sleeve but is probably off a completely different record.  That Pat Kelly LP is nice too.  I still have your old copy, came up lovely after a clean, I don't have a dishwasher....

    link

Just rub it then why dont you ... you've got all my best records ... at least they went to a good home  Sam Williams, Monique, still, they're only records
