I think it all depends what he wants to do with the records. If he wants to DJ it'll all go on rarer end stuff £100+, and his 16.5K won't go far. If he wants to have a nice collection of Soul records you can get an awful lot of vinyl for 16.5K.
Guessing though, if he's not currently on the scene, I'd say he will probably spend a fair chunk on some big money Oldies because if he sold up years ago those will be the records he remembers, so they will be the ones he wants. Trouble is, the reason Oldies have rocketed in price over the last few years is because there are lots of people who sold up years ago and now have a bit of wedge available to them and are buying back the sounds they remember.
If it was me with 16.5K I'd settle my mortgage off, clear the credit cards, and then waste the rest on beer probably, but if I had to spend it on records I'd add probably twenty records to my DJ box, but then again I'm well known as a DJ prostitute
I think you have a point there.
WOnder if anyone on here knows him then we can all be put out of our misery and let us see what he did actually buy.

I quite like it and can see some resemblance to NS dancing from the mid 70s, but is the garden gnome essential to the moves, cos I already carry too much stuff around when I go to a nighter without having to bring my garden gnome with me, and if I did need my gnome would I have to pay for him to get in

depends how much you win but given if you win a fair sum ie 1 million i would buy pretty much loads of cheapies aswell as all the nice rarities i ever want but i was only fortunate to win a few thousand pounds i might only buy 1 or 2 at the say 200 price range cause then i can buy loads at £10 and so on.
The amount this guy won was about 16.5K so thats your budget

Agree.
To be honest i don't think i would like to be rich enough to afford anything ! As we have said before the thrill is in the chase & eeking out a good cheapie that you don't have can bring just as much pleasure !
Had a good week myself this week, not very flushed at the moment & haven't had anything come in for a couple of months but had 5 cheap tunes that really pleased me this week !
One lot was a batch of 4 demo's all in pretty good nick for $40, which at the moment equates to no more than £21 ! they were ;
Tempests - Can't Get You Out Of My Mind/ What You Gonna Do- Smash
Barbara & Brenda - If I'm Hurt You'll Feel The Pain - Dynamo (actualy that one wasn't a demo )
Brenda & the Tabulations - Hey Boy/When You're Gone - Dion
Al & Randy - Miscalculation/Mission Impossible - Mercury
All apart from Barbara & Brenda had good b sides too
& another demo on Veep - Bill Pinkney & the Originals - I Found Some Lovin'
Not much to serious collectors but probably lifted me just as high as picking up a Job Opening which i have heard thousands of times anyhow .
Just bought this very cheap - 99p, not fantastically good copy but good enough for me

Well, i was thinking of a ticket to watch Wales in the quarter finals of the world cup, but
Wouldn't just go for big ticket but would be nice to buy a few that are presently out of my price range
'Marie Knight - That's no way to treat a girl' would be a deffinate, i'm determined to get it one day. Only £200 ish but still too much for me these days.
Other deffinates would be Willie Wade, Tommy Tate, Curtis Lee- Is she in your town, Tommy Dodson, a few Roy Hamilton's, George Freeman, Willie Kendrick - Change Your Ways, Willie Hutch & probably the most expensive would be Job opening or a Salvadors original.
I would probably stock up on a few I want round the 50-60 mark then some bigger 150 - 400ish stuff, not everyones cup of tea but
Firday Brown - 32nd Love Affair
Linda Griner - Good bye cruel love
Carol Fredricks - I couldn't care less
Shirley Lawson - So much to me
Diane Pane - What SIde You Bread is buttered on
Sheila Furgeson - ANd In return
errrrrrrrr bit of a girlie vocal thing going on there
But have to keep it in mind this guy is starting from scratch again.

I would buy lots of records at the cheaper end of the scale but ones I really liked and would give me pleasure rather than just a few big money ones!
Must admit though I would be one of those boring people and pay off my debts first! Having no money worries would give me more pleasure I think (but saying that I have got over 300 records at the cheaper end of the price range already which give me a lot of pleasure so that is easy to say I suppose).
Take it you are in this weekend too Chrissie.... bar of choccy and settee here I come!
Cheryl
Think I would do the same as you but there are a couple of 200-300 ones I wouldn't mind

One of the contestants on In It To Win (Lottery show), Johnny, wants to win 20k to replace his northern soul collection he got rid of years ago.
Would you buy, lots of records at the lower end of the price range or just a few big ticket numbers, bearing in mind he has got rid of his whole collection so is starting from scratch.
oh, and Good Luck Johnny
, at least the money would be spent on something sensible instead of paying off the mortgage or fancy holiday or summut

As none of us are getting any younger i have noticed recently at various allnighter's that the numbers seem to start thinning out around 5.30 - 6.00am , So what do you think should be the ideal finishing time for an allnighter ? Are the day's of allnighter's finishing at 8am just too much for us all or are some off us just feeling the pace? friday night's seem to suffer more , is this due to people having to work or saving themselves for saturday's ?
I prefer allnighters on a Friday, gives me two days to recover which seems to be a requirement for me these days

I have always been a huge fan of the 4 Tops, but particularly Levi Stubbs.
He has a fantastic voice, responsible for some of the best vocals ever laid down on vinyl. Bernadette, 7 Rooms of Gloom, Ask The Lonely, I could go on for hours.
He remained loyal to Obie, Larry and Abdul and never wanted to put his name first, as became Motown policy as the acts grew in popularity.
My point is he is seriously ill. Why should we wait for the worst to happen before we inundate Soul Source with tributes and platitudes? Why not do it now?
If we could arrange for him to see and understand exactly what he means to the UK soulies, it may give him a lift, and at least we may all feel better when the inevitable happens.
Don't know how we could do it, but we have some well connected guys in the States (Dave M!).
Over to you, what do you think.
ATB
Brian B
A true great with a voice that could move mountains just by pure emotion.

OK, I've been offered a couple of copies but at silly money, what is it with men when they know a girlie is looking for a record they think they can double the price bit like plumbers and garage mechanics. For god sake chaps its not like its a pair Jimmy Choos or a Louis Vuitton tote bag. Prepared to pay a sensible price for the right copy and also will consider uping my budget slightly

I had envisaged 3 months of sainsbury's value range to save up for this, but due to small windfall I am now actively looking for a copy.
The condition is an important factor.
I will be in a position to buy this in about 3-4 weeks but as it is a record I haven't seen up for sale very often I thought I would start looking now.
Keep your eyes open folks

Just a thought, how can you generalise about sellers from one country when there could be many good sellers in the country, perhaps people outside the UK are saying the same about some UK sellers that may be a bit dodgy, but it doesn't mean they are all bad
I know we have had discussion before about sellers from certain countries, belgium springs to mind, but all the sellers in belgium can't be bad and maybe it would be better to mention specific sellers and not generalise about a country............just a thought, not trying to be contraversial.

It's me, Aidan O'Rourke - the aspiring maker of a film set in the Northern Soul scene during the mid-70s. After I made my request earlier in the year I heard from quite a few people and got some fantastic suggestions, insights, and also quite a few warnings!
Anyway I'm just posting this to say that instead of pushing towards a feature film, I've decided to write up my story as a novel. I decided to do this after speaking to some film directors and checking out the ins and outs of making a feature film.
I have decided it is much better to get my vision down on paper and develop it fully in the way I want through the medium of writing. Eventually I hope it will be made into a film. Many films start off as novels or short stories.
The medium is different, but the request for input remains the same. I will continue listening to as many people as possible to try and make the portrayal as authentic as I can, but at the same time true to my own personal vision and memories of Northern Soul and the impact it had on me at a formative age.
If anyone would like to offer any feedback, personal accounts or anything else, please get in contact. I'm very keen to record interviews with people.
Thanks again to all those who have completed the questionnaire and shown such enthusiasm.
Thanks also to Richard Searling whose 'Soul Sauce' radio show was the spark that led to me developing the story.
To find my site, just do a search on my name - I am not the Scottish fiddle player!
Good luck with the project, and may I make one small suggesgtion, stay away from the freebasing section of this site, cos we're all completely bonkers. Maybe you could do a sequel to your book on how NS has sent us all mental in our senior years
