Are Youngsters Coming Through?
Natalie, in my scooter club for under 25s ( Young Guns SC) there is a fair few mods and scooterists from the west midlands area. Search us on the facebook and maybe you can meet up with a few like minded people who can help put on an event with.

This might be shock horror to many of you, but the two sets I played recently they both had young female DJs :O

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
love the negative slant/worry people have. I'm young and to be honest I'm not worried in the slightest. I have many young friends on the soul scene and scooter scene, I keep finding new tunes, get to new places. And all the young ones I know have the same attitude. I'd like to think we are all passionate enough to keep some form of rare soul scene going. Most of the young ones who aren't really passionate about it would have gone to a couple of events and got bored after 2-3, the fickle ones areby passionate enough to peruse it.

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
I'm not so sure it will have much an impact. Likely spur young ones on the scene on, and maybe introduce a few to the scene. But the worlds a different place than it was in 79.

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
I'm young, I run a scooter club for 16-25s (Young Guns SC) 300+ members on the forums, not all active granted but this is just the portion who could be bothered to join up. Shows that there is decent numbers involved in the scooter scene. My experience is most, but all young ones on the scooter scene love Northern Soul. Theh there's the young ones on northern scene itself and the mod scene. The scene never going to be massive like it was in its hay day, but will plod along.

So Was 2012 A Good Year For You Soulwise? Nuffin Negative
It's been a good year for me. Not just for soul but for scootering too. I completed the rebuild of my first Lambert this year and got it on the road, passed my full motorcycle test in June. Over the year, I have attended 11 scooter rallies. With the highlights being the LCGB Coast to Coast (would fully recommend this to any scooterists on here, what great crack and adventure!) and riding to the euro Lambretta in Belgium. At each rally I've partied hard and danced to lots of soul/ska/punk/dance etc and I can't wait to do it some more next year! I've discovered the joys of vinyl and listened to so many new tunes. I even persuaded my dad to dig his collection out, he has had it tucked away for year and years for fear that when I was younger, we woul damage the records. I've got two DJ spots lined up in the next week or so. Can't wait! And maybe another 3-4 in the pipe line.

You wouldnt think a neutral ground would take that much to find :P

" The Public Wants What The Public Gets "
I wasnt saying you were wanting a 100% this or that event. The point i was trying to make was that nearly every one i have met on the scene wants variety and many of their favourites are well outside the top 500. And these people i have met are just people on the local scene. So I would say most people want more than just the top 500? Or am i being naive?I woul imagien every one on here has their favourite classics? and wouldnt complain about hearing them at an event, but its when there is no imagination that bores people, right? I imagine back in the day if you want to Wigan or the Mecca, you would be very disapointed if you didnt hear at least one of the classic of the time. The same applies now, if you were at a soul night and there wasnt a single sound you recognise you will soon get bored and maybe even frustrated. But, if you get your fix of classics, your going to be more open to hearing new tunes. I just dont see how hard it could be to do a night like that, and i cant see how the soul scene is that polorised.

" The Public Wants What The Public Gets "
By play me whatever, its got to have a good feel and work with the event...

" The Public Wants What The Public Gets "
As a punter most of the time. I love hearing new/different tunes. I like my oldies, and at an event i will find myself sat in my chair thinking to myself "when one of these songs comes on I'll get up and have a dance". But once im up and dancing, play whatever and I'll dance. Play me underplayed and rare tracks, through the odd classic in and I'm a very happy man. I just like variety! Surely this is what most people on both side of the fence wants? It cant be as polorised as some people make out?

Short Sets?
Dont get me wrong i am really looking forward to the set. With a long set you can fit every tune you want in and even some more. But its a challange to select such a few songs. Dont worry, im going to bring a fair few backup 45s just incase...
-
Used To Be Cool, Now Crap
I think it was also big in the 80s as a northern track on the scooter scene?
-
Used To Be Cool, Now Crap
I think a few select instrumentals can help underpin a set and help change direction... A personal favourite.
-
Short Sets?
Every one has half an hour sets. I can really see the pros/cons. The pros is that the DJs have to think really hard about what songs to pick, so in theory its going to be all killer no filler (but obvisously as the used to be cool now crap thread shows really well, not every one likes the same songs). But it doesnt give you the chance to touch on as many different areas.

Short Sets?
Cheers for the replies. Ive got a half an hour set at a good time, 10:30 so was wondering how people chose their sets with only a small time to fit tunes in. The music policy is anything goes as long as its good, but the majority of tunes will be solid northern, not all classics. I think im going to go for hard and fast, keep things really uptempo.

Short Sets?
How do DJs on here plan their sets when they only have a short period of time on the decks?
