  1. i used to help him out back in the 60s when he was the DJ at the SOUL HOLE club in Balham High Road !that must have been 1966-67 period . very tall and smelled mightily of aftershave and MODs thought he was gay ! so if you were seen talking to James they thought you were gay too.!! he must have had a good source in the US because he always had piles of the latest releases . Denny Cordell was also a DJ as well alongside James. AFAIK i dont recall him DJ ing at the Scene Club in Ham Yard . Just Guy Stevens /Sandra/ and another small bloke who i cant identify .but he may have Dj d in the week as i didnt go there every night . in the week it was R&B and rockabilly stuff and assorted bands used to turn up like the Who and Bo diddley on 1 occasion . saturday nights were always packed out .. he was always recommending me to buy Lotsa Poppa records but i never did as i wasnt sure who the hell he was at the time
  2. back in the 60s there was a DJ with a huge collection named as above ,he used to knock around with denny cordell of Island fame. i always wondered what happened to him and his massive collection of US soul.
  3. any older members on here that remember the LAST CHANCE SALOON ,in OXFORD STREET LA DISC , FLAMINGO ,ROARING 20S , AND THE CLUB THAT BEAT THEM ALL THE SCENE CLUB IN HAM YARD .. ?
  4. me and a couple of buddies used to drive there on scooters from west london ,which was a long way back then with small roads and actually park outside the front entrance without any bother and dont recall many other scooters parked up. sometimes we might go from the Scene if it was a bad night with the cops .or some sats there was no dealers around and you couldnt get thru an allnighter without some 'leapers' never saw any pills on sale there so it was a different place than uptown clubs where there was a good supply of hearts on sale. 20 for a pound in a plain brown envelope shame was there were no handy small cameras available then ,just box brownies and foldable bellows cameras, hence little footage of the time is around. mods wouldnthave lugged around big cams

  9. i used to frequent the Ricky Tick at windsor mostly on a saturday night ,after the London Scene club was getting busted every saturday night by the cops . i preferred the Scene club as it was an allnighter with lots of bands and Guy Stevens with his latest selection of imports . But after a few years the Scene had had its day unfortunately . it got to be a pain every saturday with cops barging in and ruining the evening lights on and music off and causing major disruption which killed it in the end .. the thing i remember about the Tick was it was a bizarre old mansion ,and with the roaring log fire and sofa it was too comfortable . georgie Fame ,graham Bond ,and Geno were regulars . i still have my membership card which will feature in Paul 'smiler' Andersons book about the mods and the club scene of the time.
