This thread got me thinking about some of the Stafford things, By the early 80's it often wasn't so much about discovering things, but trying to find a copy of very rare know 45's that hadn't seen any or little turntable action.
Like Fantasions-G.I. Joe, one saturday Ady Pountain and I set off early for Stafford so we could meet up with Kev Roberts in some pub near Stone I think, as he had 2 copies of The Charades on Harlem Hit Perade for sale. Over a few drinks the conversation moved to super rare records and he mentioned another record with a patriotic feel to it along the line of The Charades, G.I. Joe. He said he thought Martin Copple had a copy, so the following week I gave Martin a ring, he said he had it but wouldn't part with it as he thought he had one of only 2 know copies, so I all but gave up on it. But then a few months latter a guy turns up at Stafford with a copy in his sales box for lttle more than a £100, took me a second and it was mine.
Larry Wright-Sweet, sweet kisses. Again well know to Detroit collectors as a very rare record, tried for so long to get a copy, but with no luck. Then Chris King rang me up and asked if I would like to have Popcorn Wylie on at Stafford, said yest straight away, also asked if Chris could ask him if he still had a copy of the record. Richard had a rumage around at home and found three. He brought them over to Stafford, I had one, Chis had one and I think Clarkie had the other, hit the deskd that very same night.
One I did find from the get go was Willie & The Mighty Magnificents-Check it baby. Was djing at a Buzzard alldays and Ian Stewart was selling the very last remains of the Simon Sussan collection first brought into the counrty by Colin B a few years before. After having a route through saw the record, now I was already playing a Intrumental by them 'Soulin' covered up as The Frankie Croker Band-Danger Zone, so thought at £15 i'll take a chance. Got it home loved it and after a fewe plays decided to cover it up as Willie Kendricks, mainly because there is a line in it that say 'you better change your ways' took it to Stafford and within a few months it was a floor packer.
One Ady and I discovered, only to find that same night it had already been discovered by someone else was Johnny Rogers. Many saturday afternoons would be spent at Ady's house, at the time he was the only guy I knew that had a real record room. I would take up new finds of mine and ask for his opion and he would play me some of his. He played me Johnny Rogers, fell in love with it there and then a begged him to sell it to me, which he did. Got up to Stafford with it in my box ready to play, Pat would go on before me and bugger me if he doesn't play the record covered up. So I run up to the stage and say 'I know what this is, no you don't it's a one off from John Anderson, it's Johnny Rogers' I said 'and i have one in my box, was going to play it', he was not happy think he had paid John a kings ransom for it.

Seatttle has a great thing going on! I can vouch for that as well.
I spin at the Ann Arbor Soul Club in Michigan. We get around 400 people through the door every month as well: typically, it's folks of all ages at our party, looking to come out, have a good time, and dance to soul 45s. We're coming up on our 3-year anniversary in December, wsg Mr. Fine Wine. As in Seattle, there's no real concern for whether or not we're playing "oldies" or certain 45s championed by certain UK/European DJs. I would say that a decent amount of the folks in our crowd do collect records, and that our night has definitely turned some people on to collecting soul 45s as well. In this last respect, I think it helps our cause that we're in Michigan, where there still are records to be had.
In the "midwest" here in the USA we have the following nights run by "serious" American collectors, plus many more that I'm sure I'm leaving out:
Ann Arbor Soul Club - Ann Arbor, MI
Magic City Soul Club - Detroit, MI
Windy City Soul Club - Chicago, IL
Title Town - Pittsburgh, PA
Gold Label Soul - Lawrence, KS
Hipshaker - Minneapolis, MN
Hotpants - Minneapolis, MN
The Get On Up Soul Club - Milwaukee, WI
North By Midwest - Milwaukee, WI
The Soul Hole - Milwaukee
More funk-inspired nights where you would still here some soul sounds mixed in would include:
Funk Night - Detroit
The Get Down - Milwaukee
Sheer Magic - Chicago
I played at Ann Arbor twice, brilliant night, and as good as anywhere in the UK for an up for it open minded crowd. The DJ's are very inventive, I've played along side the Detroit guys and some from Seattle and really enjoyed myself. They inturn let me do what I do and were very supportive.
As for Germany, would agree with Dave Rimmer, must be the biggest scene outside the UK in europe, possibly anywhere in the world after the UK. Some of Europe best cutting edge DJ's live and play there, ie Marc Forrest and Lars. They play things common with the UK plus many things that you don't hear here. Nurnburg, Bamberg, Hamburg and Aachen are extreamly well attended events that would put many UK weekenders to shame. These events have very diverse DJ line ups and exciting play lists. Bamberg, plays host to dj's from Germany, Spain, USA, UK, France over 2 rooms. You can hear great northern, modern, funk and crossover, over 3/4 days.
When playing in Spain at Spannish run events I have found them to be some of the most open minded peeps anywhere in europe.
I say god bless them all, have given me alot of enjoyable weekends over the last few years.

Brilliant, I remember that night well
...love this thread, but as a novice I never found much vinyl of value on trips to London and now I know why, those experts on the ground who I now call friends were ahead of me every doggone time!
Actually, the Kamello Brooks came out of the back of U.S. Deletions, Gloucester Rd, Bristol. As did many a rare LP. Heard Richard play Astral Trip at Wigan C/U, he told me what it was and got three copies of the LP a few days later from there. Same story with Harley Hatcher-Soul Hustler, wonder what happened to all their stock ?

Good one. Here's a few more 'who discovered's'
Pre-73/ Fidels, Sandi Sheldon, Shalimars, Danny White- Cracked.
Golden Era/ R. Dean Taylor-Ghost, Yum Yums, Tomangoes.
Post 81/ Tommy Ridgley, Karmello Brooks.
Kev's useless trivia No.927...... Soul Sam first played Rubin's-You've Been Away at the Top Rank, Hanley early 1974.
No.928....Long before Top of the World All Nighters I played Joanne Courcey on Twirl in 74 at the same venue's Monday Soul nights.
Claiming that you played any thing first is always a dangerous thing, as there is always someone that pop's up and say 'No it was Bert Sufflebottom, who play it first at the Ah Uoop youth club in 1853.
But I was playing Kamello Brooks, late Yate/early Stafford and it was very popular. I sold it to John Anderson at the end of Stafford and it seemed to pick up popularity again in the late 80's

Rob Moss found the first Moments on Hogg , still got the letter from him saying" guess what I've found It's not The Fabulous Impacts "...Rob also discovered the first Kell Osbourne " Quicksand " , taped 3/4 of it on the end of a tape " what do you think of this - think it would go ? " .Remember taking the tape to Stafford and playing it to Butch and Dave Thorley , think Dave bought it in the end ? Think Rob had one of the first Wayne Anthony's " Blow me a kiss " [ Waylana ] Sold it to Guy who played the flip " Go Go Wedding " instead ...Thought of covering up the top side as Carolyn Crawford as Wayne sounded a little female with his young vocals ...Best,Eddie

Who Discovered What ?

As Steve said back then a record could have two completely different lives in two parts of the country.
I used to go to this furniture shop by the collage in Swindon, the guy always had some interesting 45's, as I said before found MM & The Peanuts & Purple Mundi there, most of what he had was southern, also found a Barbara West-Congratulations baby. On my way home I poped in to see Steve Snook who lived in Cirencester, played him my new find and he asked if he could borrow it to play it a some local do a few days later and would give it back to me next weekend at Yate. Come next weekend he turns up with it already covered up as Lynn Vanardo, 'That's what you should play it as'.
But back to my point about two lives, that same day I found a copy of Ronda Davis - Do you remember, decided to cover it up as Ann Sexton - Oh boy. Played it for a year there until Clarkie found another copy. Now many years later I am reciting this story and Rod Shard chips in you didn't discover that, it had already been played in the north west a few yaers earlier un-covered. Strangley no one a Yate worked out what it was for nearly a year.
