I had the same response from her when I posted it on Youtube a few years ago. If she says she didn't record it then I tend to believe her. But there is always the other possibility, that it was the sisters recording, but they didn't realise it had been released at the time, never got paid and now days they are just very pissed off with the level of interest in it.
The murky world of 60's soul recordings. !!!!

When I spoke with the
Yes Dave, "How Big Is Big" "Please Take Me Back" "I Ain't Got To Love Nobody Else" etc. were all recorded at American in Memphis.
Sean
When I meet the guys in Memphis, they told me that they went to American Group in Memphis after being introduced by Bobby Womack. Bobby was working there at the time and had heard about their mis-adventure in Detroit.

As a "mature student" in the "art" of collecting strictly Detroit produced 45's, which in itself apart from the obvious, sometimes proves to be a bit of a "minefield".....particularly with regard to the labels outside of the Motor City, containing Detroit produced material within their portfolio! Now whilst I'd love to have such total knowledge, sometimes even written material throws up some anomalies, and furthermore adds to confusing me somewhat?
I have over the years picked up several items believing them to be produced in Detroit but have been proved to be a bit off the mark so to speak! I therefore having been going through my collection slowly, have the following such anomalies I'd really like to address, so if anyone could be so kind as to reiterate their production whereabouts, I'd be very grateful
Here's a few for starters, and whilst I have sought advice on some of them them would respectfully seek second opinions!
Masqueraders-How big is big-Bell, Memphis recording
Luther Ingram-Run for your life-Hurdy-Gurdy Believe this was a Detroit recording, was written while he was there anyway
Roger Hatcher-Sweetest girl in the world-Excello Nashville
We the people-Making my daydream real-Lion As it has Bert DeCoteaux on arrangements, think it's unlikely to be Detroit
Thanks in anticipation
Kind Regards wilxy.....

What a waste of a decent backing track. The Gino Johnson recording was quite nice.
Brings to mind Dora Hall, and her Calamo, Cozy and Reinbeau labels funded by her multi-millionaire husband, owner of the Solo Cup Company.
Hi Robb
I always though there might be an interesting story here though. Even though she covered many Pop standards, she also covered a fair more obscure soul/R&B titles. Why, where did she hear them etc, etc
As informative as always Robb

What's really frightening is that when deals are done to secure catalogues, the physical masters are often the last thing to get mentioned in case they skewer the deal. A friend of mine has over 300 multi-tracks of classics from the 70's and 80's most of which are on major labels, which makes me think that previous reissues of these tunes have probably come from mixed-down 1/4 inch production masters. Many multi-tracks were disposed of in the late 80's when companies started digitising their catalogues and before the companies knew that there would be a boom in re-issues. Also it's amazing how many companies simply didn't want to retrieve their masters from studios when the studio closed down so often the studios would just dump 'em because they were too expensive to ship or store! Philadelphia International kept all their masters but they're one of the few!
Ian D
Here's a shocking story for ya Ian. Met Bobby Massey a few years ago, he had just moved back to Cleveland from Atlanta. He had moved some of his stuff down there which was stored in a basement. The basement got flooded and everything destroyed and throw in dumpsters. So he thought lets make a clean start, sell up and head home and get to work on some of his old Cleveland material Way Out, Saru, O'Jays, Daywood etc recordings. When he gets back to Cleveland the studio has changed hands, where he had all his masters stored and the new owners had thrown them all in a dumpster. He was heart broken, when I meet him he was in the process of setting up a new community studio.

Master tapes are becoming increasingly more difficult and more expensive to work with. Most U.S. companies view master tape retreival as a pain in the ass and a low profit centre, so they try and charge you the earth. Also there's no money in deep catalogue releases unless you're a specialist like Ace/Kent or Numero, so most companies don't have access to original master tapes as no one wants to spend the money on retreiving them and baking them (most 70's master tapes now need to be baked in an oven in order to use them).
It drives me mad as I would make access to master tapes a condition of the deal, but often the repertoire owners just can't be arsed to deal with digging the masters out of a storage facility in Encino or New Jersey. Nuts I know but that's how it is these days.
There is actually a sort-of underground network of people who get access to some masters and this is one of the areas which is interesting at the moment. Some of the greatest masters ever recorded are in private collections and not even available to the companies who actually own them.
Ian D
Hi Ian
The number of times I've gone into an old out building, barn etc and found master tapes under piles of dried leaves, dead rats or the roof has been leaking in on them for over 30 years, shocking. But as you say owners don't care.

Not sure how you link to previous theads...
from Rob Moss 19.02.10
"Popcorn told me that a guy came to him with a singer he wanted recording. Thought he was a barber and seemed to think the guy's name was Geneboro"
and from Dave Thorley also 19.02.10
"Popcorn told me that it was a contract job. She came in wanting to put a record out, paid Richard whatever, he recorded her, arranged pressing and handed them over to her. As far as he was concerned that was the end of the story.
Took him a while to remember the record when he was first asked about it. Producers like him would work on their own material for their own labels or the label they were signed to at the time and also do contract jobs. So Richards name does pop up on a few Detroit things where his involvement may have been little.
Normally when you see executive producer on a label, the chances of them being at the studio when the track was cut is only 50/50"
Yep was his barber who was called Greenbro or a version of that. Andy Rix spoke to Margret a while back don't think she had a copy of the record. I spent a number of years trying to find the barber in question, but after Richard has passed. So asked his daughters and friends who this could have been, but with no luck. All I found out was he was based somewhere on the west side of the city, but that's a mighty big area...
