Act I - It's The Same Old Story / Night Of The Wolf - MEASURED MILE 517
The latest 7" single on Bob Stanley's MEASURED MILE label is a floor-filling double-sider. The percussion-and-woodwind driven ‘Night Of The Wolf’ has been played out at northern soul nights in the UK, at Brooklyn discotheques in the mid-70s, and originally it was an Italian progressive rock album track. Much loved by everyone. It was issued as a super-rare US 45 in 1975 under the name the Al Foster Band, and this is its first official reissue. ACT 1's 70s modern soul midtempo classic ‘It’s The Same Old Story’ also got played out in the early discos of New York, Chicago and LA, but it was only ever an album track. This marks its first ever release on a DJ-friendly 7". Get it while you can!

Dee Ervin - You Make Me Happy / Give Me One More Day - Kent City 089
Dee Ervin suffered collateral damage from GRC/Aware’s bankruptcy. He only got to release two mediocre sides on Hotlanta but these recordings match anything he created in a successful career throughout the 60s & 70s. By 1974 he was as much a composer as artist, but he excels at both on these two numbers that were fully produced and ready for release. ‘You Make Me Happy’ is a terrific uptempo dance track that recently featured on CDKEND 512 “Masterpieces Of Modern Soul; Vol 6”. ‘Give Me One More Day’ was issued erroneously in 1975 as a Tribe LP track on ABC, but the session details clearly have it as a Dee Ervin recorded number.

Darrow Fletcher - Hope For Love / No Limit - Kent City 088
‘Hope For Love’ turned up on a one-off master tape which arrived at Ace HQ courtesy of Grapevine Records, who knew we were working with Darrow. Darrow thought the tape was one he and his stepfather Johnnie Haygood made to interest Ray Charles. Ray eventually signed Darrow to his Crossover label. Darrow remembered cutting it in the early 70s, a period when he was relatively inactive recording wise. It has proved to be very popular with the two-step crowd and a vinyl single version will be very welcome. Darrow’s original recording of the Grey & Hanks’ song ‘No Limit’ was issued by Kent in 2012 on CD and as a single. That limited-run 45 sold out quickly but demand has continued to grow, making the current price upwards of £100. ‘No Limit’ was also recorded and released by both Jean Terrell and Breakwater in 1979.

Joe Graham / John Edwards- Higher Than High / John Edwards - Kent City 087
The recent find of four Joe Graham recordings in the GRC/Aware tapes has shown there was much more to Joe’s talents than the southern soul of his 60s Chant recordings and the synthesiser, electro pop he recorded for various Atlanta labels in the 80s. ‘Higher Than High’ is a soulful disco number featuring a relentless beat. The track already has a strong following, thanks to advance plays in Europe and the UK from DJ Dave Thorley. This track, along with three other numbers, were recorded around 1976 for the GRC stable – just as the company was floundering so badly that the songs were left as unmixed multi-track tapes. Now mixed the demand for this one will be high. We’ve taken the opportunity of including another excellent, unreleased at the time, recording from the revered John Edwards. ‘It’s Got To Be The Real Thing For Me This Time’ is an uptempo Sam Dees song, unheard until the 1990s release of the first batch of GRC/Aware tapes.

Warren Raye & The Infernal Blues Machine - It's The Feeling I Get - Kent Town 086
Yet again a new 100 Club Anniversary 45 has been instantly acclaimed and has become highly sought-after on release. Warren Raye’s ‘It’s The Feeling I Get’ is now available on a commercial pressing and this superb Crossover number will be one of the biggest sellers of the year. A later version by Damion & Denita was released on their obscure eponymous Rocket LP but its of-its-time boogie passage has put DJs off playing it over the years. Warren Raye delivers the definitive version and his singing is equally masterful on the flip side - ‘I Can’t Turn You Down’ - a song that recently featured on a Kent Masterpieces CD by Melanie Burke. Both recordings are discoveries from Mickey Stevenson’s unissued tapes cache.

Jackie Dee / Dave Hamilton - Who/ Who (Instrumental) - Kent City 085
Jackie Dee’s ‘Who’ was one of many great tape finds from Detroit producer Dave Hamilton’s vault in the 90s and first came out on CD in 1999. In 2015 Ace licensed that version to Colemine Records in the USA who issued it on their First Light subsidiary. That disc is now deleted and fetching a high price. In recent years we have found the multi-track tape with an extended version of the recording and an instrumental take on it that features Dave Hamilton’s vibes-playing. The vocal side is a full one minute and forty seconds longer than the original release.

The Reynolds - Don’t You Worry Baby the Best Is Yet To Come - Repro
First released back in 2014 on Greg Wilson’s Super Weird Substance label, as a limited 12'' vinyl run of 500, ‘Don’t You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet to Come’, has subsequently become a much sought after record with modern soul enthusiasts, copies currently selling at well over £100. It was soul legend, Colin Curtis, who suggested, at last year’s We Out Here festival, that a 7'' pressing may be timely. Colin’s connection with the track goes back to hallowed Northern soul club, the Blackpool Mecca, in ‘70s, where the Bessie Banks original, never issued in the UK, was a cult-classic.

Shazz - Innerside - One World Records
The moody and soulful house track 'lnnerside' has been internationally popular since it was first released in 1998. Shazz - derived from soul, house and jazz - was an identity of French producer Didier Delesalle who co-wrote the song with American-born jazz singer Ken Norris, the featured vocalist on this track. 'lnnerside' was a minor hit and was remixed numerous times but the original 'Universal Soul Mix' has remained most popular with soul fans and is now released on a 7" single for the very first time.

Little Ann - Who Are You Trying To Fool - Kent Repro 15
Little Ann’s ‘Who Are You Trying To Fool’ was unknown until the late 90s when Ace acquired Dave Hamilton’s tapes and this glorious soul dancer was discovered. It has since sold out two Kent 45 releases and due to demand we have resurrected it. This time it is on a TCB repro label, which is the imprint it would have been issued on, had Dave had the finances to cover it. For its flip we have gone for the beautiful, midtempo ‘The Smile On Your Face’ - never before on a 45 and one that will please her devoted fans

Tommy Youngblood / Other Brothers - Tobacco Road North / Nobody But Me - Kent Repro 12
“The Soul Of Tommy Youngblood” 1970 Kent LP had many fine tracks, especially ‘Tobacco Road North’ though it was not attributed to the rightful writer, Jimmy Radcliffe, at the time. The music has been sampled for various hip-hop adaptations, including one by Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan, but the original stands on its own and deserves a 7” format. The Other Brothers ‘Nobody But Me’ is another UK Kent exclusive that sold out on its first Kent Select press and is still much sought-after and now expensive.
