Brothers Of Soul - I Need Your Love / Can't Nobody - Kent City 079
A most recent Kent Select soul 45 release. The Kent release notes follow below Bridges, Knight & Eaton are revered names in rare soul scenes as diverse as Lowrider, Northern and Modern; their work crosses over to most soul genres. We are therefore very proud to present two previously unheard (apart from on their Kent CDs) tracks from their 1969 Galaxy recording sessions, when they were known as the Brothers Of Soul. ‘I Need Your Love’ is an exquisite midtempo dance track and ‘Can’t Nobody’ has been a success on the latest Lowrider Soul CD.

Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles - The Intruder - Kent City 078
‘The Intruder’ has been one of the biggest finds to be played at the 100 Club in the last three years. Writer Billy Terrell found what turned out to be a Vigor label test pressing among his records and submitted the tracks to Kent. We were knocked out by the ballad side, ‘I’m Just Passing Time’, which we have since issued as a Deep Soul single, but it is the dance groove of ‘The Intruder’ that has excited the rare soul world. Uptempo soul tracks of this quality hardly ever turn up. The imaginative Terrell/Dahrouge song was arranged with full orchestration by Tony Camillo but the deal with Vigor was never finalised. The urgency of the music makes it a dancer’s delight. The flip is a Terrell solo song on another Asbury Park act – Clarence Pinckney, who delivers the superb big ballad with panache.

Joe Buckner / Hal Frazier - I Wish I Knew / I Stand Blue - Kent City 077
Joe Buckner was lead singer of the Major V, a Chicago group who recorded in Los Angeles in the late 60s. ‘I Wish I Knew’ had been issued by the Ballads on Venture in 1969 and that outfit later re-cut it as ‘Butterfly’ in 1975. Joe and the Majors give an equally impressive performance on this great Leon Ware, Susaye Greene song. ‘I Stand Blue’ is another Ware composition that we first featured by writer/producer Mickey Stevenson on the Kent 100 Club Anniversary single of 2019. Big-voiced Hal Frazier also gives a top performance on the excellent beat ballad.

Eddie Hill / Detroit Emeralds - I Am So Thankful / Long Live The King - Kent City 075
Finding a new Eddie Hill recording from 1969 was quite a thrill and on hearing the beautiful mid-tempo groove, we included it on both our “Westbound Northern Soul” and “Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 3” CDs in 2010. Since then, demand for ‘I Am So Thankful’ has risen and we can now issue it as a single. It was originally scheduled to be Westbound 151 in the USA but that spot was claimed by Emanuel Lasky’s ‘Never My Love’. Eddie now has a Kent label release to go with his Detroit waxings on Thelma, Ge-Ge and M-S. ‘Long Live The King’ was an LP track from the Detroit Emeralds acclaimed debut album “Do Me Right”. It didn’t get a US 45 but did sneak out on a Various Artists UK DJ-promo EP in 1973 for current Phonogram releases. This is the first time this superb and popular dance track it has been commercially available as a single.

Darrow Fletcher - Infatuation / What Have I Got Now - Kent Repro 06
Darrow Fletcher’s belated success in Europe - from the 70s onwards, but particularly in this century - has been very rewarding from him; he has been thrilled by the interest and admiration for his past work. These are two of his revered Jacklyn label sides; Jacklyn being owned by his father who named the imprint after Darrow’s sister. This Repro coupling will be welcomed by collectors who cannot afford the high price of the originals – many of which are often found in poor condition as they were played the hell out of in 1960s Chicago.

James Lately - What you’re doing / Instrumental - MD Records
Here you have the first release of the previously unissued version of the Johnnie Mae Mathews flip to ‘Two Sided Thing’ sung by James Lately. This was uncovered in the Pioneer vaults being digitised as part of the MD Pioneer project. Interestingly we have also uncovered the original recording of ‘Two Sided Thing’ which was also recorded at Pioneer Studios. Not much is know about James Lately, he died at a tragically young age reportedly at the hands of his girlfriend at the time

Las Vegas Connection - Running Back To You - Hep Me - Repro
One of the more idiosyncratic U.S. independent labels must be the Hep’ Me imprint from New Orleans run by veteran Soulman Senator Jones. Very few of Hep’ Me's numerous releases made it out of New Orleans and the ones that did, tended to go into collections and nowhere else. Las Vegas Connection's ‘Running Back To You’ surfaced some time in the mid 1970s but there were never enough copies for it to take off. Hopefully that will change with this re-release on the original label. Also, a lovely piece of mid-tempo soul on the flip with the stunning ‘Can't Nobody Love Me Like You Do’. Original copies are few and far between and the current price benchmark for this superior slab of New Orleans vinyl is hovering around the £250 mark. As with most of our reissues this will appeal to across-the-board scenes.

Ernie K. Doe - Here Come The Girls / Back Street Lover - Repro
A Record Store Day RSD 2021 Drop 2 outing. Release notes follow from then... Most people will remember the Boots advert from 2007 which used Ernie K. Doe's infectious funky 'Here Come The Girls' and caused a surge of new interest in this killer 1970 New Orleans vintage groover. The Sugababes then nicked it and managed a Top 3 hit. However, accept no substitute for the original! An essential Allen Toussaint song and production which should be in everyone's 7Inch box as a staple. In store and available right now via our fast first class same working day shipping service Can listen to both tracks above

The Barrino Brothers - The Bad Things (You Said To Me) / Just A Mistake - Kent Repro 8
Detroit’s four Barrino Brothers first recorded for Dave Hamilton on his TCB label in 1969. The single went by largely unnoticed until all things Dave Hamilton-related became of interest in the 90s and onwards. The record only sold locally but the belated interest from funk fans in ‘Just A Mistake’ has pushed the price to around the $1,000 mark for a mint copy. We’ve reproduced the label, with a subtle colour switch, and put the tape find of ‘The Bad Things (You Said To Me)’ on the A-side. That is a standout dance track that has been issued before as a now-deleted Kent 45 that looks great on the label Dave Hamilton had originally planned to release it on.

Randolph Brown & Company - It Ain't Like It Used To Be - SHOTGUN 116
Randolph Brown & Company was the identity of future soul star Randy Brown as he embarked upon his successful solo career following a six-year period as lead singer of The Newcomers at Stax. After a 1974 single on Stax-owned Truth Records, Brown issued two singles on the obscure Memphis label, Black Magic. Both were written and produced by Carl Smith and David Weatherspoon and were picked up in 1975 by Mainstream Records in New York for national release on their IX Chains label. The second of these singles, 'It Ain't Like It Used To Be', captured the mood of the times as people faced the social and financial challenges of a deepening economic crisis. This anthemic song has much relevance today, hence this timely revival.
