Peggy Gaines - When The Boy That You Love - Kent City 062
Nashville singer Peggy Gaines had two singles on Ted Jarrett’s Ref-O-Ree label but the best track, the Bob Holmes-written and produced ‘When The Boy That You Love (Is Loving You)’, was only discovered in the mid-90s. Released on CD and a limited 100 Club Anniversary single, it became a guaranteed dancefloor filler and is still in demand, fetching over £100 for that first pressing. The plaintive ballad ‘Everybody Knows’ is making its vinyl debut and will appeal to both Southern and Deep Soul aficionados.

Joe Graham / Bill Brandon - I'm A Happy Man / Whatever I Am I'm Yours - Kent City 064
Kent issued ‘I’m A Happy Man’ in 1999 on a CD of Atlanta producer Bill Haney’s Chant label recordings. Joe Graham had one 45 issued on the imprint but, having had great faith in him, Haney recorded him on eight tracks. Graham wrote the pretty number himself and it has earned many fans since its release, most of whom are keen to own it on a 7-inch single. It is coupled here with Bill Brandon’s permanently in-demand modern soul classic ‘Whatever I Am, I’m Yours’.

Mighty Whites / Jacqueline Jones - Given My Life / A Frown On My Face - Kent City 063
The Mighty Whites’ ‘Given My Life’ is the Modern Soul hit of the last 18 months. It’s popular on the European rare soul circuit through spins by Dave Thorley, on the funkier end thanks to DJ Dean Rudland, and is a 100 Club classic in the making. It is backed here with Jacqueline Jones’ 1974 Loadstone crossover classic ‘A Frown On My Face’ – a record that gets harder to find and more expensive by the month.

TC Lee & The Bricklayers / Mike Pedicin - Up And Down The Hill / Burnt Toast - Kent Gusto
2009 saw this 45 release from the short lived Kent Gusto imprint, Mike Pedicin got the top billing at the time of release, while here at the Soul Source store we would have to say T C Lee has the more star quality (perhaps). Anyway two for one, 'Up And Down The Hill ' uptempo northern from the King Label backed with a updated cover of Shorty Longs 1956 'Burnt Toast And Black Coffee'

Joe Burrell / Pookie Hudson - There Was A Time / This Gets To Me - Kent City 056
Release for a track that was once better known as sung by Kae Williams ‘There Was A Time’ is known to rare soul fans as ‘Our Love Is Dying’ by Kae Williams, as which it appeared on a fake Treasure Island label for some YouTube clips, but the truth is it was an unissued tape find. Given the haunting quality of such a great soul song, various DJs had it cut to acetate. It was titled after a line in the lyrics and accredited to Kae Williams, who produced the track and owned the Junior label for which it was recorded. The real artist is Joe Burrell, as revealed on the master tape owned by Jamie Records, who ran many of the major soul labels in the Philadelphia area. We have coupled it with the all-time Northern classic ‘This Gets To Me’ by Pookie Hudson, which is in constant demand and has been unavailable for many years.

Obrey Wilson / Lee Brackett - Daddy Please Stay Home / You Get To Me - Kent City 052
Two previously unreleased on vinyl tracks from Kent 45... Modern soul fans have been singing the praises of ‘Daddy Please Stay Home’ by veteran soul singer Obrey Wilson, a 1975 recording previously available only on a Kent CD. Wilson’s sad vocal is perfect for this mid-tempo groove. Lee Brackett’s bouncy, more jazz-influenced ‘You Get To Me’ was recorded a couple of years earlier and also missed out on a release at the time. This infectious track is just waiting for an enterprising DJ to programme it into their set.

Tutti Hill - When The Going Gets Rough - Kent City 049
A first time out on 45 for these two sides in 2017, Kent Records release notes follow below Tutti Hill’s ‘When The Going Gets Rough’ was listed on the label of her Arock single in 1964 but the record actually played ‘Whoa Whoa, Baby Take It Slow’. At last this gorgeous mid-tempo dancer from Ron Miller and Lee Porter makes it to 45. The flip is a piano and voice demo from the same stable but Garrett Saunders’ magnificent baritone makes the song I Keep Comin' Back For More a must-have

Lorraine Johnson / Deep Velvet - Love Like Yours / Complain To The Clouds - Kent City 048
Lorraine Johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on ‘A Love Like Yours’ were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. Deep Velvet give a much more harmonious take on Ripple’s ‘Complain To The Clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song
