Store: Lee Shot Williams - Hello Baby / Harold Burrage - Please Love Me - Kent Town 155
Lee Shot Williams - Hello Baby / Harold Burrage - Please Love Me - Kent Town 155 Richard Stamz was a colourful Chicago DJ and TV host who ventured into the record business in the early 60s with his Foxy and Paso labels. His main artist and right-hand man was Harold Burrage, whose ‘Please Love Me’ was the original of the Monk Higgins song that became a local R&B hit for Betty Everett three years later. Lee “Shot” Williams’ ‘Hello Baby’ is low-down dirty R&B at its best. View full store item

Alpaca Phase III / Sam Dees - Paper Man / False Alarms - Kent Deep Soul 16
‘Paper Man’ is a major discovery for lovers of Sam Dees music and the Atlanta/Birmingham soul sound of the 70s. Written and recorded in that productive period, it has only just been found in the vault of Moonsong / Clintone recordings. Sam Dees worked with Alpaca Phase III for the Atlantic release ‘I Like To Party’ in 1974 and a Clintone release the following year. He co-wrote this ballad with Wes Lewis and Ken Walker from the group (he also composed ‘Someone To Run To with Wes Lewis and group member Berry Collins). Dees is the vocalist on ‘False Alarms’, one of several brilliant Dees’ compositions first released on his “Second To None” Kent CD in 1995. With “so tied up” being such an important lyric in this song, it is conceivable that it is a forerunner of ‘So Tied Up’ which featured on his Atlantic LP at this time.

Maurice Williams / Walter Wilson - Look My Way / Not Now But Later - Kent Deep Soul 15
Maurice Williams ‘Look My Way’ was recorded at the same session as the two songs issued on his Zodiacs-billed Scepter 45, although it outperforms them both. It was assumed that ‘Not Now But Later’ by Walter Johnson was also an unreleased number, but a few years later I discovered a Wand DJ copy in the home of the producer Billy Jackson when the singer’s true identity was found to be Walter Wilson. However, Billy told me that was an alias for Tommy Keith who wrote and recorded some excellent soul music.

Maxine Weldon / Peggy Woods - I'm The Other Half Of You / You'd Better Be Good To My Baby - Kent Deep Soul 14
Maxine Weldons version of ‘I’m The Other Half Of You’ was stumbled upon while browsing Ray Godfreys (aka Raeford Gerald) multi-track recording sessions. Using the same backing track, the quality of the track led Kent Records to decide that a Deep Soul release 45 is in order. Backed with a most pleasing Val Simpson and Nick Ashford song from Peggy Woods, this fresh deep soul 45 certainly lives up to the labels imprint title.

Junior McCants / Johnny Soul - She Wrote It I Read It / Fall In These Arms Of Mine - Kent Deep Soul 13
‘She Wrote It, I Read It’ by Junior McCants only exists on a handful (or less!) of King demos on the flip of his Northern Soul dancer ‘Try Me For Your New Love’. The highly talented singer wails his heart out on a magnificent Deep Soul ballad written and produced by his mentor Charles Spurling. ‘Fall In These Arms Of Mine’ by Johnny Soul on the flip is from the same stable but was recorded in the southern USA with Macon, Georgia-based producer Bobby Smith. It is very influenced by another son of Macon, Otis Redding – in the best possible way.

Store: Eddie Parker / Sandra Richardson - Crying Clown / Deserted Garden - Kent Deep Soul 10
Eddie Parker / Sandra Richardson - Crying Clown / Deserted Garden - Kent Deep Soul 10 Our Deep Soul series already sports Eddie Parker’s acclaimed ‘But If You Must Go’ and now we have his supremely soulful version of ‘Crying Clown’ taken from the same sessions. Already a great ballad cut by him in the 60s, this sparser piano-led take is as intense as soul music gets. It is backed with the beautiful melancholy of Detroit great Sandra Richardson’s ‘Deserted Garden’, previously only available on our first “Jack Ashford - Just Productions” CD. View full store item

Store: Little Johnny Hamilton - Apartment #9 / Crying Like A Baby - Kent Deep Soul 12
Little Johnny Hamilton - Apartment #9 / Crying Like A Baby - Kent Deep Soul 12 Little Johnnie Hamilton was a 60s Los Angeles soul singer whose records are all hard to find, despite their quality. The searing deep soul slowie ‘Apartment #9’ is a million miles from the funk of ‘The Git Down’, recorded at the same session and issued on the Watts Way label in 1967 as a two-part single. Hamilton wails away his pain on a sparse number abetted by some righteous girl backing singers. ‘Cry Like A Baby’, a release on the one-off Soul Shack label, is a more mainstream offering of much charm, complete with strings.
