Little Johnny Hamilton - Apartment #9 / Crying Like A Baby - Kent Deep Soul 12 Little Johnnie Hamilton was a 60s Los Angeles soul singer whose records are all hard to find, despite their quality. The searing deep soul slowie ‘Apartment #9’ is a million miles from the funk of ‘The Git Down’, recorded at the same session and issued on the Watts Way label in 1967 as a two-part single. Hamilton wails away his pain on a sparse number abetted by some righteous girl backing singers. ‘Cry Like A Baby’, a release on the one-off Soul Shack label, is a more mainstream offering of much charm, complete with strings. Atlanta Soul Artistry 1965-1975 Kent Vinyl LP Though built with highly questionable finances, gangster Michael Thevis’ GRC, Aware and Hotlanta labels produced some scintillating mid-70s soul music. Thevis knew his limitations and allowed his producers, arrangers and songwriters free reign as long as they worked hard and came up with good recordings. It was the period in music when Detroit and the south got together, as with Stax and Westbound’s Memphis/Detroit co-productions, and Thevis tried to make that blueprint work for his Atlanta set-up. He brought producer Marlin McNichols and engineer Milan Bogdan down from the Motor City and Floyd Smith from Chicago. Smith came with the highly talented singers Loleatta Holloway and John Edwards, while McNichols brought the Counts, Ripple and Deep Velvet to cut in the spanking brand-new Sound Pit Studios. Songwriter supreme Sam Dees was co-opted from Thevis’ Moonsong operation, which he ran out of nearby Birmingham, Alabama, and the resulting sessions produced some exquisite soul songs – several of which charted, making the company hot between 1973 and 1975. This was also the case of several Woodland High School students in New York, who created Newban with fellow classmates. The group started gigging around the tri-state area of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, and were soon brought to the attention of legendary Bell Recording Studios audio engineer Malcolm Addey, who recorded with the band over a two-month period in 1974. Savoir-Flair - Keep Holding On / You're The Best - Miles Away Records Miles Away Records are proud to present our latest release Keep Holding On / You're The Best by Savoir-Flair. Dallas, Texas in 1982, during the hot summer months Roger Boykin, John Miller and Cassandra Wright were working as session musicians at Precision Audio studios. They were put together to create soundtracks, jingles and idents for US TV commercials and, in what spare studio time the three of them had, would experiment with the studio equipment at their disposal - writing and developing what would become the Savoir-Flair sound. In these secret, after-hours sessions the three would create a staggeringly good private press 80s modern soul album. A flawless collection of tracks with every one of them hitting hard. It would be released on Roger's own label SoulTex Records with the group touring locally. Alas though, this was to be their only album as Savoir-Flair disbanded a year later.
