For Dancers Forty - Kent Cd - Various Artists For Dancers Forty - Various Artists - CDKEND 514 Our new CD "For Dancers Forty" revisits the US Modern and Kent labels that started it all off Release Date 29 November 2022 Clip of the release notes from Ady Croasdell via Ace Records follows below... Kent Records are commemorating 40 years since the LP KENT 001 "For Dancers Only" hit the record shops in 1982 with resounding success. Our new CD "For Dancers Forty" revisits the US Modern and Kent labels that started it all off. We have already released a "For Dancers Forty" LP but though the compilations share the same celebratory title, only three tracks feature on both. We didn't want to neglect our digital customers at the expense of the vinyl hounds. The collection represents the breadth of label-owners Saul, Jules, Joe and Lester Bihari's recordings, featuring stompers, rhythm & blues rockers, girl soul grooves, group harmony and sublime ballads. Several tracks are new to Kent CDs. There are previously unheard 1966 soul recording from 50s Modern R&B artists Aaron Collins and his sisters, the Teen Queens, guitarist/songwriter Arthur Adams and soul-crooner Billy Watkins. Kent stalwarts Mary Love and Z. Z. Hill are featured, musically and on the front cover with a recently discovered studio shot. As with KENT 001 we feature the R&B sounds of the label from T-Bone Walker, Little Joe Blue, Flash Terry and the mighty B. B. King. There are underplayed tracks by Jeanette Jones, Lowell Fulson and Tommy Youngblood - whose moody LP-only track 'Tobacco Road North' has been sampled by US rappers. As ever on our rare soul scene, it is the lesser-known artists who we spotlight - there are largely unheard tracks by Teddy Reynolds (from a very obscure Twist LP), King Solomon and a plaintive ballad from Beatrice Lee. Northern Soul devotees will enjoy the Sweethearts' Motownesque 'No More Tears', Jimmy Bee's new and improved 'Wanting You' with added chorus, which has a digital debut and Clay Hammond's cult mover 'You Brought It All On Yourself' reappears after several years' absence. The funk-edged crowd get the first re-release of Foxfire's manic take on Fulson's 'Tramp', and new to Kent are Larry (Perrault) & Tommy (Bush) doing a version of Shorty Long's 'Here Comes The Judge' Can listen to two tracks above Side 1 01 Satisfied Feeling - Mary Love 02 You'd Be Good For Me - Jeanette Jones 03 Gonna Put It On Your Mind - Arthur Adams 04 Tobacco Road North - Tommy Youngblood 05 Jealous Woman - T-Bone Walker 06 Walk The Chalk Line - Aaron Collins & The Teen Queens 07 I've Got Papers On You Baby - B.B. Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 6 - Kent Cd Masterpieces Of Modern Soul Vol 6 - Various Artists - CDKEND 512 The latest volume in our acclaimed Masterpieces Of Modern Soul series Release Date 29 July 2022 Clip of the release notes from Ady Croasdell via Ace Records follows below... The latest volume in our acclaimed Masterpieces Of Modern Soul series is as strong as ever and drips with brand new, old recordings. An amazing 12 tracks are previously unheard and a further two are very different versions of already popular numbers. Some rare-soul household names have new material featured on here. Ronnie McNeir hits a wicked dance groove with ‘Let’s Make A Move’ and Dee Ervin offers a superbly soulful ‘You Make Me Happy’ – sure to become a modern classic. The lesser-known Joe Graham’s ‘Higher Than High’ is already halfway there, thanks to advance plays in Europe from DJ Dave Thorley. It’s from an Atlanta session around 1976, in-between his Chant and later Hotlanta releases. Jean Shy is a highly-thought of artist who recorded firstly in Chicago and later in L A. ‘What Tomorrow Brings’ was cut in the latter city, under the auspices of Kent Harris; it’s a very classy midtempo jazz-infused number. Ramona King had her best-known records in the 60s but ‘Happy Times’ was recorded in the Bay Area’s GSR studios in the 70s and is a laid-back gem. We’ve drifted into the late 70s / early 80s disco sound with numbers found on tape that were just crying out to be heard. Joe Simon cut the unknown group Cynic on ‘I Want You’ at Spring early in 1982. Detroit’s Exportations very catchy ‘Second Time Around’ and the equally fast, funky and fantastic ‘Have A Good Time’ by Atlanta’s Maggabrain were laid down in the late 70s as was Fox Fire’s ‘Don’t Play Me Cheap’. The early 80s is the likely era for Melanie Burke’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Down’ – which, like the McNeir and Hodges James & Smith offerings, were Mickey Stevenson productions made in L A. 1. Soul Superman / With A Dab Of Soul - VA (Pied Piper) - Kent Records CD Soul Superman / With A Dab Of Soul Various Artists (Pied Piper) CDKEND 505 Kent Format: Audio CD Release Date 24th September 2021 A new Pied Piper related album release from Kent records. Two classic Detroit Soul Lps served via one cd. A preview of the release notes from Ady Croasdell follow below... The rare soul scene is overwhelmingly a 7” record-collecting world but there are a few notable exceptions. 1967 saw two Detroit-recorded LPs issued from one of the most admired production teams in the city – Pied Piper Productions. The Hesitations’ album continued the hip 60s dance tracks of ‘Soul Superman’ with numbers such as ‘She Won’t Come Back’, ‘You Can’t By Pass Love’ and ‘That’s What Love Is’ – the backing track of which would be reused on Eddie Parker’s ‘I’m Gone’ 45 and be acknowledged as a pinnacle of Northern Soul. Every track has its admirers, the mid-tempo ‘I’ll Be Right There’, ‘Wait A Minute’ and ‘You’ll Never Know’ in particular, but the three subsequent singles taken from the album failed to chart and the LP was forgotten – until UK 60s soul connoisseurs later acclaimed it as a classic of the genre. Freddy Butler was a big-voiced solo act who had already recorded for Detroit labels M&M, Samo, Starmaker and Wheelsville. The only single from this LP, ‘There Was A Time’, was recorded at United Sound studios in September 1966 and though it failed to chart, the project went ahead. There was more emphasis on big ballads such as ‘They Say I’m Afraid (Of Losing You)’ and ‘Just Because You’ve Been Hurt’, but the sound is still unmistakably Pied Piper, evident in the slick mid-tempo rhythms of ‘I Like Your Style’, ‘Deserted’ and ‘You’d Better Get Hip Girl’. The most famous track was the bouncy ‘That’s When I Need You’, which was played at the UK’s big Northern Soul all-nighters in the 70s when it was bootlegged onto a 45 despite having only legitimately been an LP selection. Tracks 01 She Won't Come Back - The Hesitations 02 You'll Never Know - The Hesitations 03 You Can't Bypass Love - The Hesitations 04 I Believe To My Soul - The Hesitations 05 That's What Love Is - The Hesitations 06 Soul Superman - The Hesitations 07 Soul Kind Of Love - The Hesitations 08 I'm Not Built That Way - The Hesitations 09 I'll Be Right There - The Hesitations 10 Wait A Minute - The Hesitations 11 Soul Superman #2 - The Hesitations 12 Clap Your Hands - The Hesitations 13 There Was A Time - Freddy Butler 14 That's When I Need You - Freddy Butler 15 I Like Your Style - Freddy Butler 16 I Fell In Love (I Can't Help It) - Freddy Butler 17 Never Let Love Go - Freddy Butler 18 They Say I'm Afraid (Of Losing You) - Freddy Butler 19 This Thing! - Freddy Butler 20 Just Because You've Been Hurt - Freddy Butler 21 You'd Better Get Hip Girl - Freddy Butler 22 Give Me Lots Of Lovin' - Freddy Butler 23 She's Foolin' You - Freddy Butler 24 Deserted - Freddy Butler Listen to two tracks above View full store item

Early Years And Unheard Pearls 1970-1973 Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford - Kent Records CD Early Years And Unheard Pearls 1970-1973 Hodges, James, Smith & Crawford CDKEND503 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date 26 June 2021 Hodges, James, Smith and often Carolyn Crawford were so soulful in their early years – these unreleased gems will cement their fine reputation. Hodges, James, Smith (& Crawford) are one of the last great 70s girl groups to be compiled. The reason for the strange billing is that they were formed in 1970, had a release as Hodges, James & Smith, then as Love ‘N’ Stuff. Ex-Motown starlet Carolyn Crawford joined in late 1971 for two singles before departing amicably in late 1972, leaving Pat Hodges, Denita James and Jessica Smith to continue as a trio. A snippet of the release notes written by Ady Croasdell follows below. The early 45s are excellent and have long been admired, but the tracks found in the vault are superb and make this a must-buy for lovers of the girl soul group sound. Highlights include the two M’Pingo 45s when they were a quartet and the unissued dancers ‘Wishful Thinking’, ‘What Made You Think’, ‘Nothing Special In You’ and the sexy ‘In My Fantasy’. Pre-release plays of these at the 100 Club and on On-liners have been very well received indeed. Tracks Side 1 01 Wishful Thinking 02 Let's Pick Up The Pieces 03 Somewhere A Valley 04 Write Me A Letter 05 What Made You Think 06 Nothing Special In You Boy 07 I'm In Love 08 Ain't That Right 09 Nobody 10 In My Fantasy 11 I'm A Woman (Who Loves You) 12 (It Was) Never Meant To Be 13 (I Wanna Be A) Hang Up To You 14 Let It Out, Let It In 15 Right On, Brothers, Right On 16 It Cracks Me Up 17 (Baby) Don't Leave Me 18 Baby My Love Is Showing 19 Again 20 I've Gotta Be Me 21 If You Wanna Love Me Listen to two tracks above View full store item

Everybody Makes A Mistake - Stax Southern Soul Volume 2 - VA - Kent Records Cd Everybody Makes A Mistake - Stax Southern Soul Volume 2 Various Artists CDKEND 499 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date: March 2021 More southern soul sounds from the mighty Stax Records of Memphis, including unissued tracks from the Soul Children and Eddie Floyd. A snippet of the release notes from Dean Rudland follows below. Stax Records in Memphis was one of the centres of southern soul, and yet due to its many hits and big city location this often gets forgotten. We redressed that balance with the release of “Nobody Wins: Stax Southern Soul” in 2012 but there was so much more to play that we’re back with 20 more tracks that capture the deep emotion and soulful feel of the Memphis behemoth. First up we have found a bunch of previously unreleased tracks. There are two by Eddie Floyd, including his version of ‘Everybody Makes A Mistake’, first released by Otis Redding on “The Soul Album”, and a stormer called ‘Standing In The Safety Zone’ by the Soul Children. We also have alternate takes of originally unreleased track by Ollie & the Nightingales, Chuck Brooks and William Bell, and have gathered up rare tracks that appeared as bonus tracks on CDs by Jimmy Hughes, Mavis Staples, Shirley Brown, the Newcomers, David Porter and Veda Brown... Leaflet Preview Scans Tracks 1. William Bell - "I'll Do Anything For Your Love" (single edit) 2. Eddie Floyd - "How Can I Win Your Love" 3. Isaac Hayes - "I'm Gonna Have To Tell Her" 4. Detroit's Secret Soul - Little Ann - Kent Records CD Detroit's Secret Soul - Little Ann CDKEND 495 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date 27th Nov 2020 Latest release from Kent Records is an extended release of the Little Ann vinyl album released in 2019. A snippet of the release notes from Ady Croasdell follows below. The ultimate Little Ann collection – featuring alternate versions, rare 70s recordings, backing tracks and more. In the last two decades, Little Ann’s music has gone from being almost unheard to celebrated widely across the world. Initially known only as a footnote for having one side of a Ric-Tic single in 1968, the discovery of her acetate of ‘What Should I Do’ at Wigan Casino in the late 70s led to her name becoming important to rare soul fans In addition to the nine original Dave Hamilton recordings, we have them all as instrumentals – showcasing Dave’s arrangements and music. There are alternate vocal versions of her two biggest dance tracks and an a cappella version of her epic ‘Deep Shadows’. The four super-rare Canadian sides appear on CD for the first time. In fact, 19 of the 25 tracks make their digital debuts. We found a missing verse to ‘Possession’ which has never been heard before, and the intended 45 mix of ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’ is included. Most of the original vocals have been re-mastered, several from superior tapes. The sleeve notes are the most detailed yet on Ann’s short but eventually applauded career. Tracks 01 What Should I Do 02 Lean Lanky Daddy 03 Sweep It Out In The Shed (Master tape) 04 Who Are You Trying To Fool 05 I Got To Have You (Master tape) 06 One Way Street 07 Possession (Master edit) 08 The Smile On Your Face 09 Deep Shadows (Multi mix) 10 Lost A Lover (Need A Friend) 11 That's All I Want From You 12 Stand Together 13 I'm Doin' All Right 14 What Should I Do (Instrumental) 15 Lean Lanky Daddy (Instrumental) 16 Sweep It Out In The Shed (Instrumental) 17 Who Are You Trying To Fool (Instrumental) 18 I Got To Have You (Instrumental) 19 One Way Street (Instrumental) 20 Possession (Instrumental) 21 The Smile On Your Face (Instrumental) 22 Deep Shadows (Instrumental) 23 What Should I Do (Alt vocal version) 24 Who Are You Trying To Fool (Alt take) 25 Deep Shadows (A cappella version) View full store item

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - I Learned The Hard Way - Daptone Records CD Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - I Learned The Hard Way - Daptone Records CDDAPT19 Format: Audio CD Daptone Records Release Date 2010 I Learned the Hard Way was produced and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style “Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest.
