  1. Kent takes a third look at black music's viewpoint on all things Vietnam... A snippet of the release notes written by Tony Rounce follows below. The final instalment in our trilogy spotlighting black America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. “When are you going to do another volume of Vietnam soul tunes?” has long been one of the most frequently asked questions posed to us here at Ace. Almost 16 years have passed since we issued the previous volume, and that’s considerably longer than the Vietnam War itself lasted, but we feel “Stop The War” is every bit the equal of the two collections that preceded it Tracks Side 1 01 Promise That You'll Wait - Michael Lizzmore 02 I Say A Little Prayer - Dionne Warwick 03 Lonely Soldier - William Bell 04 Letter To A Buddie - Joe Medwick 05 V.C. Blues - Allen Orange 06 Fighting For My Baby - Donald Jenkins 07 (Mama) My Soldier Boy Is Coming Home - The Shirelles 08 Uncle Sam - Jimmy Hughes 09 Going On Strike - The Emotions 10 Johnny - King Hannibal 11 My Ship Is Coming In (Tomorrow) - The Pace Setters 12 (The Two Wars Of) Old Black Joe - Dr William Truly Jr 13 Hymn No. 5 - The Mighty Hannibal 14 I'll Be Home - Artie Golden 15 Wish You Were Here With Me - The Fawns 16 Men Are Getting Scarce (Album version) - Chairmen Of The Board 17 I Want To Come Home For Christmas - Marvin Gaye 18 Stop The War - The Impressions 19 Leave Him Alone - Stu Gardner 20 Glad To Be Home - Charles Smith & Jeff Cooper 21 The War Is Over (My Brother) - The Sensational Saints 22 John Brown - The Staple Singers 23 Home To Stay - R.B. 2. Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities Volume 6 High-quality dance records from across the Northern Soul spectrum – floor-fillers, chin-strokers, the esoteric and the sometimes obvious. Various Artists CDKEND 471 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date 24th November 2017 The sixth volume of Kents long running quality Northern Soul Classiest Rarities series,. A snip of the release notes from Ady Croasdell from the time of release follows below. It’s nearly three years since the last volume of this respected series. The eye-opener on this new collection will be the previously unissued version of ‘I Only Cry Once A Day Now’, a superb Gene Page arrangement treasured by the Puffs on Doré but performed here by the mighty Fidels. Fellow Los Angeles vocal group the Hyperions contribute the catchy and exciting ‘Why You Wanna Treat Me The Way You Do’, and the Lon-Genes’ rare single ‘Dream Girl’ gives further kudos to that city’s soul reputation. Difosco (aka Dee Ervin) recorded the ebullient ‘Sunshine Love’ for another Los Angeles imprint, Earthquake, and its standing among collector’s continues to grow, while we finally put out the correct brass-filled version of Peggy Woods’ great mid-80s discovery ‘Love Is Gonna Get You’ for the first time on CD. Much-travelled soul ambassador Sidney Barnes has licensed us his super-rare production of ‘I Wanted To Tell You’ by Little Nicky Soul and later under-the-radar creations on Andre Scott and Jean Carter. He has also added substantially to the booklet notes in an illuminating and entertaining manner. Sid’s Detroit production partner, soon-to-be superstar George Clinton, offers up ‘You Won’t Say Nothing’ by Tamala Lewis, one of the earliest works from hisNew Jerseydays. That disc eventually became a Northern Soul classic, as did Jackie Day’s ‘Naughty Boy’, Johnnie Taylor’s ‘Friday Night’ and Betty Turner’s ‘The Winds Kept Laughing’. An even more established gem is given an interesting twist in a newly acquired early version of Maxine Brown’s ‘One In A Million’; the subtle differences make it an aural thrill.... Tracks 01 Love Is Gonna Get You - Peggy Woods 02 You Won't Say Nothing - Tamala Lewis 03 I Only Cry Once A Day Now - The Fidels 04 Friday Night - Johnnie Taylor 05 I Got To Tell Somebody - Betty Everett 06 I Can Fly - The Magnificents 07 Why You Wanna Treat Me The Way You Do (aka Why You Wanna Treat Me Like You Do) - The Hyperions 08 Sunshine Love - Difosco 09 I Wanted To Tell You - Little Nicky Soul 10 Young Boy Blues - Daniel A Stone 11 Nomad Woman - Jock Mitchell with The Fabulous Agents 12 Sad Tomorrows - Nooney Rickett 13 Wait A Minute (You're Getting Careless With My Heart) - The Kittens 14 One In A Million (Alt take) - Maxine Brown 15 Naughty Boy - Jackie Day 16 The Winds Kept Laughing - Betty Turner & The Chevelles 17 Lost In A City - The Vows 18 Poor - Unfortunate - Me (I Ain't Got Nobody) - J.J. Barnes 19 Cry In The Arms Of Another Love - Andre Scott with Jessie, Otis & Shotgun 20 Long Live The King - Detroit Emeralds 21 Love Hangover - Jean Carter 22 (Marriage Is Only) A State Of Mind - O.C. 3. Pied Piper: Follow Your Soul - VA - Kent Records CD “Pied Piper – Follow Your Soul” features some of the biggest Northern Soul discoveries of recent times. Nancy Wilcox provides the pounding ‘He’ll Be Leaving You’ and the equally classy ‘More Than A Memory’. September Jones’ ‘Voo Doo Madamoiselle’, previously available only on one of our newly-minted Pied Piper singles, is one of the biggest dancefloor records of the past two years. Her previously unissued ‘You Better Know Why’ is more soul perfection, while the equally captivating ‘No More Love’ made it onto 60s vinyl. Lorraine Chandler’s original take of the James Bond-themed ‘You Only Live Twice’ is even more urgent than the version we revealed in the 90s, while her ‘Lost Without You’ shows Pied Piper was also capable of mesmerising ballads. The Cavaliers are represented by the finished version of ‘Ooh It Hurts Me’ (featuring Jack Ashford’s rhythm track, missing from all previous versions) and the stunning ‘Without Someone To Tell Me’ (the acetate of which famously sold for a small fortune). Fellow Detroiters the Metros have a previously unheard number and one with a convoluted history. Tracks 01 Voo Doo Madamoiselle - September Jones 02 He'll Be Leaving You - Nancy Wilcox 03 You Only Live Twice (alternate version) - Lorraine Chandler 04 Could It Be You - Sharon Scott 05 Ooh It Hurts Me (Alternate version) - The Cavaliers 06 I Need Your Love - The Dynamics 07 Watch Yourself - Tony Hester 08 Love Will Find A Way - Harry Gates 09 They Say I'm Afraid (Of Losing You) - Freddy Butler 10 Lost Without You - Lorraine Chandler 11 Wait A Minute - The Hesitations 12 Love Sick - The Pied Piper Players 13 No More Love - September Jones 14 Set My Heart At Ease - Mikki Farrow 15 More Than A Memory - Nancy Wilcox 16 Without Someone To Tell Me - The Cavaliers 17 It's Right Now - The Metros 18 Love Is Not A Game - Sam E Solo 19 What Can I Do - Lorraine Chandler 20 You Better Know Why - September Jones 21 You Don't Know Me Do You - The Metros 22 Hold To My Baby - The Pied Piper Players 23 That's What Love Is - The Hesitations 24 Give Me Lots Of Lovin' - Freddy Butler View full store item

  7. Chuck Jackson Big New York Soul: Wand Records 1961-1966 Kent Records CD We released the best of Chuck Jackson’s Wand recordings on “Good Things” (CDKEND 935) in 1990 and subsequently put out his eight Wand albums as four CD two-fers. A reassessment of the tapes from our Wand trawl of the mid-80s, along with more recent discoveries, means we are now able to issue a final CD of previously unreleased tracks and rarities. Of the eight previously unheard songs, highlights are the perky opener ‘Things Just Ain’t Right’, a tremendous cover of the Curtis Mayfield-written ‘Need To Belong’, originally covered by Jerry Butler, and ‘Anymore’, a duet with Dionne Warwick. Also included are ‘Little By Little’, a great uptempo dancer previously available on the Kent LP “A Powerful Soul” in 1987, ‘The Silencer’, a secret agent-styled film theme released only on a 3CD set in the 90s, and a demo of ‘In Between Tears’ previously exclusive to another Kent LP. With the publication of E Mark Windle’s book House Of Broken Hearts, the city of Nashville’s black music scene is being studied in detail for the first time since Kent issued the CDs “Uptown Down South” and “Music City Soul” in the late 90s. Those earlier CDs featured Excello/A-Bet and Poncello/Ref-O-Ree recordings respectively. A clip of the release notes from Ady Croasdell follows below... This CD is a look at the Kent label’s Northern Soul history, heritage and future. There’s more to Kent than just Northern Soul, but that’s how we started in 1982 when Mary Love’s ‘You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet’ kicked off the “For Dancers Only” vinyl album. We covered the ballad side recently on “Deep Shadows: The Best Of Kent Ballads” CDKEND 342. The “For Dancers Only” LP gets a nod with Gene & Gary’s duet of Danny Monday’s ‘Baby Without You’, here on CD for the first time. There is a host of exclusives, several not issued in any format before: Alexander Patton’s ‘True Love (Is In The Heart)’ will open traditional Northern fans’ eyes and ears the most, being from the same session and of a similar feel to his classic ‘A Lil Lovin’ Sometimes’, and Marva Holiday’s ‘Rising Higher’ is a fabulous Sherlie Matthews’ song that will be admired by progressive Northern fans. The booklet contains 9,000 words of wisdom, re-telling the Kent Northern saga for long-term inmates or explaining where it all came form for the more recent converts. That’s 30 stunning soul sounds, one for each glorious year. It is not only a celebration but a revelation too; we hope you enjoy the hyperbole. Tracks Side 1 01 (True Love Is) In The Heart - Alexander Patton 02 (Just A Little) Faith And Understanding - The Magicians 03 The Magic Touch (Alt vocal) - Melba Moore 04 You Only Live Twice (Original take) - Lorraine Chandler 05 What Should I Do (Alt mix) - Little Ann 06 (I'd Be A) Millionaire - Chuck Jackson 07 Gettin' To Me - Ben E King 08 Think Smart - The Fiestas 09 Love Keeps Me Crying - Walter Wilson 10 Ooh It Hurts Me (Instrumental) - The Pied Piper Players 11 Oh, My Darlin' - Jackie Lee 12 Rising Higher - Marva Holiday 13 Sorry Ain't The Word - The Paramount Four 14 Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right - The Mayberry Movement 15 No Limit - Darrow Fletcher 16 I Wanna Thank You - The Quotations 17 Have Faith In Me - Sugar & The Spices 18 Try My Love - Toni & The Showmen 19 Beauty Is Just Skin Deep - The Sweethearts 20 Baby Without You - Gene & Gary 21 Handwriting On The Wall - Bobby Wisdom 22 Oh Baby Don't You Weep - Luther Ingram 23 I'm Stepping Out Of The Picture - Johnny Maestro & The Crests 24 I'm Shooting High (I Reach For The Sky) (Alt mix) - O.C. Birth Of Soul Volume Two - Kent Records CD Birth Of Soul Volume Teo Various Artists CDKEND 147 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date 29th April 1996 Birth Of Soul Various Artists (Birth of Soul) Clip of the release notes by Dave Godin follows below The second volume of THE BIRTH OF SOUL is as dynamic and essential as the first, and a cross section of the widest possible range of sides which illustrates the inexorable inroads that gospel music made during this transitional period. Not all the records were commercial hits, so their particular influence would have been less immediate and apparent, but when records like Ray Charles' What I Say and Maxine Brown's sublime All In My Mind broke out in all markets, the record industry could have had no more lingering doubts about the direction post-rock'n'roll music seemed likely to take! 15. Birth Of Soul - Kent Records CD Birth Of Soul Various Artists CDKEND 123 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date 29th April 1996 Birth Of Soul Various Artists (Birth of Soul) Clip of the release notes follows below Of all the many great compilations put out by ACE/KENT, I regard The Birth Of Soul as one that really can be truly described as "essential", for it represents a living musical document of black American music and its equally fascinating history and development. Compiled with skill and insight by Trevor Churchill and Adrian Croasdell, it is not only an imaginative collection of sides, but one that also shows that "Soul" didn't just "happen", but was a gradual process of evolution as the music of black America moved from its R&B tradition with its nostalgic rural roots, into the newly growing freedom of cultural expression that was to be found and explored in the urban centres. Tracks 01 You're Not The Guy For Me - Ernestine Anderson 02 Chain Gang (The Sound Of My Man) - Theola Kilgore 03 Hey Girl Don't Bother Me - The Tams 04 Ain't Nothing You Can Do - Bobby Bland 05 Pain In My Heart - Otis Redding 06 Cry Baby - Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters 07 How Can I Forget - Jimmy Holiday 08 You Don't Have To Be A Tower Of Strength - Gloria Lynne 09 He Will Break Your Heart - Jerry Butler 10 Have Fun - Ann Cole 11 Oh My Angel - Bertha Tillman 12 Something's Got A Hold On Me - Etta James 13 Daddy Rollin' Stone - Derek Martin 14 Mockingbird - Inez & Charlie Foxx 15 Snap Your Fingers - Joe Henderson 16 I'll Come Running Back To You - Sam Cooke 17 Merry-Go-Round - Marv Johnson 18 Goin' Out Of My Head - Little Anthony & The Imperials 19 Hey Girl - Freddie Scott 20 You'll Lose A Good Thing - Barbara Lynn 21 Part Time Love - Little Johnny Taylor 22 I'm Qualified - Jimmy Hughes 23 Any Other Way - William Bell 24 She Ain't Ready - J J Barnes 25 I Do - The Marvelows 26 The Telephone Game - Claudine Clark 27 Mama Didn't Lie - Jan Bradley 28 Gypsy Woman - The Impressions Listen to two tracks above View full store item
  16. Birth Of Soul Volume Teo Various Artists CDKEND 147 Kent Records Format: Audio CD Release Date 29th April 1996 Birth Of Soul Various Artists (Birth of Soul) Clip of the release notes by Dave Godin follows below The second volume of THE BIRTH OF SOUL is as dynamic and essential as the first, and a cross section of the widest possible range of sides which illustrates the inexorable inroads that gospel music made during this transitional period. Dave Godin Tracks 1 The Caravans - Walk Around Heaven All Day 2 The Invincibles - Heart Full Of Love 3 Gene Chandler - Man's Temptation 4 The Diplomats - Here's A Heart 5 The Drifters - There Goes My Baby 6 The Serenaders - Two Lovers Make One Fool 7 The Cookies - I Never Dreamed 8 Marie Knight - Come Tomorrow 9 Brenda Holloway - I'll Give My Life 10 Jay Wiggins - Sad Girl 11 The Freeman Brothers - I'm Counting On You 12 The Falcons - I Found A Love 13 Ray Charles - What'd I Say 14 The Showmen - The Wrong Girl 15 Benny Spellman - Lipstick Traces (On A Cigarette) 16 Solomon Burke - Down In The Valley 17 Willie Tee - Always Accused 18 The Manhattans - Call Somebody Please 19 The Wallace Brothers - Lover's Prayer 20 Theola Kilgore - This Is My Prayer 21 Eddie & Ernie - Time Waits For No-One 22 Betty Harris - Cry For Me 23 Vernell Hill - Long Haired Daddy 24 Birdlegs & Pauline And Their Versatile Birds* - Spring 25 Kenny Gamble - Standing In The Shadows 26 Major Lance - Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um 27 Johnny Nash - It's No Good For Me 28 Maxine Brown - All In My Mind Listen to two tracks above

Peeps waiting for the doors to open at 7:30 was the first sign that ‘All Roads, literally did lead to CULCHETH VILLAGE HALL, no matter what Martin Pitt said about my dodgy map 😉 …as they just kept coming until the main room was absolutely bouncing! Event Date: 3 May 2025 We just wanted to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you who came on Saturday night. We arrived at just gone 7pm to be greeted by Rob and the lovely Shirley, and by 7.30pm there were already folk in the room, seated and waiting for the tunes to start at 8. By 8.30pm were not sure there was an empty table to be found in the place with travellers from Scotland, Wales, Midlands, Yorkshire, Tewkesbury, and beyond, an awesome effort for a sunny... We arrived just after opening time, to an already busy room.
