TBH Mike I've had the C-157 issues and DJ copies numerous times, but only once the C-185. At the time of 185 the label was distributed by Roulette and maybe they though WHIGTL was worth another push but it didn't take off, so didn't get an issue. Just guessing really...could be just rambling nonsense of course.

Correction: Discogs does show an issue of C-185 as does the photo above

Note to self:  pay more attention.

Andy - thanks - nothing like a good ramble about these things.  I have the 185 issue with 'Drown In My Own Tears' rather than the less inviting flip to 157 'Broomstick Horse Cowboy' !

Not a lot in the scheme of things really.   However, I've been playing the LP since this cropped up and I have to say that's the way to hear it!

Thanks Dave, I've just bought one from him today!

No I meant more where have they come from - did someone find a box of them?

    Chris

there was a seller on ebay selling lots of Curtom  'job lots' inc at least one box of 25 of this one.  He also had multiple copies of the job lots - a nice lot of seven releases inc a copy of this  which he had six lots of!  one of which is winging its way to North Carolina as I speak 😀

Interesting they do turn up, so I’d have to check release numbers against dates, but there seem to be a fair few that got both label designs.   I foolishly sold my orange label Cry cry cry, which I really wish I hadn’t...

    more Aussie Bobby bland:-)

I have the Rockin' The Same Old Boat aussie release

  6. Mal - I have two label variations of ‘Cry Cry Cry’ with the second titled ‘Cry Cry’. Both are on the earlier brown/yellow. I don’t have an orange variation.

‘Ain’t That Loving You’/ ‘Jelly Jelly Jelly’ is the only one I have on both brown/yellow and orange.

  7. Been a bit of a project these past few years collecting Bobby's Duke 45's.  Two short of the US releases - his first and 369 (anyone got one out there?), I'm not sure the second variation of Duke 160 exists(?) and I only have his second release on a 78 - he only put two singles out on the label before his Army service.

Including Demos, Label anomalies, EPs (French, Jukebox, UK), Canadian Dukes (and London), Australian CBS and UK Vogue, Vocalion, Action, Sue,  I'm up to 94.

I'm not so bothered about his ABC, MCA, Malaco 45's.....maybe i'll get around it☺image.png.46507a579cf97cb1cffd63317bc3729d.png

Hello guys - I was googling something, and this topic came up. Thank you for the shout out about the Reggie Young Discography Project... I am currently working on part two of the 'liner notes' for 1966, which includes little records like 'The Dark End Of The Street' and 'Eight Men, Four Women' - I welcome any and all input on possible records that might be referenced in the session books... like you said. 'guy that travels with the Platters' huh? Another intriguing entry for 11/24/66  'Tall Boy with all the hair..' who Bobby Robinson brought down with Willie Hightower - we think it may have been J.D. Bryant, but as of now have not come up with any tracks that might have been cut then... anyway, please stay involved, it takes all of us!

What a fantastic piece of work Red .... invaluable

A couple of us used to play 'Touch Me Up' late '70's , early 80's. It was always a bit too 'DISCO' for my liking although she was a prety good vocalist. I never connected her to Rhonda Davis in any way, but it's not beyond the realm to think it could be Rhonda Washington, though Hot Sauce would have ceased to exist at Stax / Volt 4-5 years prior.

I have no idea Sean.........just musing on the the possible connection of 'Rhonda' on Stax and the Rhonda on Volt (Stax subsidiary) ....... like I said I don't know the Stax track.......

Hot Sauce (from 71) worked almost exclusively with Irene Productions ... the production house run by Irene & Al Perkins up in Detroit (the team behind Al Hudson & the Soul Partners, One Way, Roundtrip, Oliver, Alicia Myers, Oliver Cheatham, etc) ... so they would have been based in Detroit. The group's Rhonda Washington was Chuck Berry's neice & she was (most likely) originallty from St Louis).

Rhonda (Washington) had cut a solo 45 for Sure-Shot in 67 (sister label to Duke). Jumping back in time from that, the St Louis group El Torros cut for Duke (on & off) between 57 & 62. She joined the group in 62 (after their latest Duke 45 had failed to sell) but they didn't do much till 64 when they changed their name to the Mustangs. Under this name, they had their own 45 out on Sure-Shot. The two songs they cut were written by Gladys Battle (Rhonda's mum). They had a 2nd Sure-Shot 45 out in 65 (as the Mighty Mustangs). Rhonda sang lead again (with her mother writing again). The majority of the group's members had been going for years & when this last 45 failed, they quit the biz & took day jobs. Rhonda must then have decided to go on as a solo act.

you have me confused Roburt.... so Rhonda Washington was also signed to Duke before her work with Hot Sauce?

Often wondered who the Rhonda 'Touch me up' on Stax actually was, as her vocal is rather similar to the Rhonda Davis on Duke.

The 'lead' on Volt records act 'Hot Sauce' was a Rhonda Washington - half a dozen fine single before disappearing.  I don't know the track you mention but I would guess it is from the vaults issued on the reactivated Stax label................. comparing the Washington (Volt) and Davis (Duke)  tracks their voices are not a million miles apart ...but who knows?

The Dells At Trentham Gardens  was an incredible experience some doubt as to whether there would get over as Marvin Junior was poorly. Probably the highlight for me when there sang give my baby a standing ovation the windows nearly went  out words just failed me !

Eddie Parker and Lorraine Chandler the night before there played Stafford at Darlington was fantastic also and not forgetting Edwin Start at the casino, such a under rated performer !

The Dells was a legendary night for sure Baz...everyone was there it seems, the only person who missed it I know was Kev Kane!

  13. The sale of the remaining 4000 or so records from his collection was discussed at length on here - Featonbys Auctioneers on Tyneside sold them..something like £7 k was made on the day.... I have a copy of the spreadsheet the auctioneers provided...none of the lots really took my fancy....

  14. I have seen some wonderful Soul performers in recent years....all performing far better than you have any right to expect.......some highlights include...

Ann Sexton and Debbie Taylor at The Witon

Irma Thomas, Barbara Lynn, Mabel John, Willie Hightower, Tony Owens, Brenda Holloway and Betty Harris in New Orleans in 2016 (Ponderosa Stomp)

William Bell, Ann Sexton,  Masqueraders, Denise Lasalle, Timmy Thomas, Spencer & Percy Wiggins, Don Bryant, John Gary Williams and Randy Brown in Memphis in 2016, also down the road in Muscle Shoals Eddie Floyd and Mary Gresham with Travis Wammack

Phillip Mitchell, Barbara Mason, Michael James Kirkland, Lew Kirton, Lenny Williams and Margie Joseph in Bilbao over the past 5 years

The O'jays in Nevada in 2010

and Aretha Franklin in North Carolina in 2016..

Nearer to home -  William Bell at the Sage Gateshead last year (with the Stax Academy) were fantastic and in London last year Don Bryant at Ronnie Scotts was brilliant as were The Impressions at The Union Chapel....

The Albert King/John Lee Hooker/ Buddy Guy and Jnr Wells show at The Hammersmith Odeon mentioned earlier was a night to remember although Albert was in better form at Colne the year he died in '92. ...and not forgetting the great Bobby Bland at the Albert Hall back in 2000...

Try to catch as many as I can..always worth the effort.......

Absolutely fabulous show.  Only dowside was Snake refusing to do an encore so they sung whilst the band were packing their stuff away.  Snake went really down in my estimation after that.

in fairness Syl gave him hard time throughout the show.......don't think he up to the standard Syl Johnson was use to...
