Cunnie,
Heard Sutty play it out when "Without Boundaries" was at Burton-on-Trent, I was the only one to dance to it then - tried to get him to part company with it, but to no avail.
Cheers

We got to know Max when we used to go to Lea Manor - since then every time we crossed paths, he always had a big smile on his face and would welcome us like old friends. He was such a lovely man, a true gentleman.
As with many on here, we were completely stunned when Ted told us at Rolls-Royce that he'd died.
The world will be a poorer place without him in it.
Rest in peace, Max.

Many Dj's in the past would use a beer mat to cover the label,
Remember going to have a peek at what was playing,
It was a fantastic tune The artist was called "Watneys" and the song was called "Pale Ale"
I'd love to be in charge of dishing out the cover-up names and give them all ridiculous names, like ..... Jimm Jamm & the Jamas or even Tim Tam & the Turnons ....... i know, i know it's a 'proper' name, but I can't help thinking it's some other, more recognisable guys, moonlighting from their 'home' record company - I bet someone out there knows one way or the other.
Anyway, what's the average life-span of a cover up and have you ever "outed" one?
-
Hello Peeps,
Heard a cover-up (again) last night and it got me wondering just who decides on the cover-up name? And what are the criteria - is it given a name so as to try and completely fool everybody (is that possible?) or if a record has a certain "feel", say 'Southern soul', for example, whether the record is ascribed to one of several possible 'Southern soul' artists, any of whom, might be the real deal!
Another thing that intrigues me, are cover-ups actually covered (taped?) up or do the dj's that play them, just go in to furtive-mode for those three or four minutes? Generally, I thought, us vinyl afficionadoes didn't like putting stickers on records.
And while I'm on the subject, what's the silliest cover-up name you've come across?
Just wondering

I've been out twice this weekend to different places and listened to two & a bit sets by three different dj's - about 2hrs 20 mins - where the "dj's" didn't use the mic. It's not the first time I've come across this phenomema, but three times in one weekend ....is it a growing trend? and is it ok?
Musically, all three were fine, well mostly, but I'm not sure it's what I want when I go out to a soul night. Obviously, not speaking, doesn't change the musical content but for myself, I feel a bit let down - not that I want to know every last detail about every record played but surely, some communication from the dj is a good thing, isn't it? At it's lowest level, it addresses that most basic of questions..Who's this? and/or What's the title? - I accept that there are probably a few tunes that almost everybody knows & don't need introductions, although, having said that, if you're only just getting into soul music, maybe you wouldn't.
Isn't passion, part of the whole soul music scene and how as a dj, do you convey that passion about a particular record that you want people to listen/dance to, if you don't use the microphone? Do you hold up 'score-cards' with marks out of 10 or wave your arms up down, getting more vigourous the more you personally like it? I know, standing out in front of a crowd can be daunting, but it's all part of being a dj, otherwise, arguably, why bother turning up ......just send a cardboard cut-out & a cd / tape with all the tracks on it!
Theoretically, non-verbal dj's - is that the right term? NV-DJ or NM-DJ non-microphone? - pose a problem for promoters. What happens, if you inadvertently book two or three for your soul event and they're on, one after another?
I guess at times, it's not easy being a dj - no matter what you play, the dancefloor stays empty or you're on really early or late, when the only people around are the promoters and the barstaff - but for me, you're not really a dj if you ain't talking!

How many records make a stockpile then?
I think I've got four copies of "A Taste of the Younghearts" LP - does that count as a stockpile?
I used to buy the Chuck Jackson repress on Stardust - "What's with this loneliness" & give them away to people who didn't know the track - simply because I thought it was (and is) so good - and at one time had 5 whole copies.
Anyway, if anyone's feeling guilty about stockpiling any soul records please bear me in mind if you want to assuage your guilt and redistibute them !!
