Harringtons And Sexy Rexy Of Sheffield
Yep, Batas were definately the business, no self respectin' little skin , like me, would be seen without em. My old mate Russell Davy was the first person I saw wearing them at our school , Rowlinson Tech, here in Sheff, he was 3 years older than me and always looked as cool as f**k, so I had to get some.Only problem was the soles fell off after a few months! Aint no soul....

Harringtons And Sexy Rexy Of Sheffield
Tramps was up from the Castle Market near Fitzalan Square. Colvins was across the road from Castle market towards the Wicker. On the Wicker was a shop ingeniously entitled "Wicker Discount" - This was the best place for Prince of Wales checked trou, Slazenger jumpers, Brutus shirts etc. There used to be a lad I new who would take orders (what size, colour etc) then go and nick em from there and sell them to you. There was Jacksons tailors for the best lairey suits. Going back even further, there was MAN BOUTIQUE on Orchard Street for the best mod gear.

Harringtons And Sexy Rexy Of Sheffield
In 1973 all our crowd who went to the nighters from Sheffield wore suede bomber jackets - not the posh brand new type , no..these were second hand American truck drivers ones. Absolutely brilliant they were - from MORTIMERS a fiver a piece. Trouble was, I was soaking some BENZEDREX nose inhaler wicks in a little jar full of wine, in my wardrobe.(These stunk like f**k). My jacket was in there too and afterwards it had a most peculiar odour to it - my mum thought so too and slung it!! Got my Crombie from COLVINS on Waingate, Sheffield, 100 yards towards town from MORTIMERS. My SKINNERS came from RAY ALAN's (before he met Lord Charles) on the Moor in 1972/3. Happy Days Indeed

Violet May Barkworth
I used to spend most of Saturday in Violets when I was about 12 in 1969 - in those days I was buying reggae from her. That shop to me was like an Aladins Cave, she had shelves full of brand new reggae singles, all in order of labels. When I asked for "Clint Eastwood" by the Upsetters, she - fag in gob, glasses halfway down her nose, about 70 odd, casually says YES, and turned to the shelves, thumbed along the Punch 45's and pulled it out brand new - 7and a tanner !! I once asked for one and quoted the matrix number, "Teddy Brown - Trojan TR7810", to which she replied, "you ought to be working for me round this side" - made my day! A couple of years later I was after the Soul gems which we all crave, picked up a few good uns too, but when I think of all those thousands of imports sat there, there must have been absolutely loads of undiscovered and yet to be massive sounds just waiting..... we just didnt know em then at that time. I used to stand around listening to the records she put on for the punters, usually Soul and reggae, - going through the same racks of LP's over and over again so I didnt get her barking, "are you buying anything or what ?!!!" What a star !!!

Soul Packs.....remember Them?
Bought a couple of packs from Blues and Soul around 1972 and only got one decent record, "Breakaway" - The Valentines (Sound Stage 7), rumour had it that Dave Godin was picking off the best stuff first. I had bought loads of gems from Soul Bowl (also when they were called Groove City) from '73 onwards, things like Donna Coleman (£3), Mickie champion (£3) etc.. when "Baby dont you weep" was a quid, month in month out and no-one would play it at a nighter because it was too cheap and common! So I sent for the Soulpack (seem to remember it was £10 all in). I remember half of it was 70's crap ,apart from Diane Jenkins - I need you , but the rest were good , Dean Parrish-Bricks, broken bottles & sticks Tina Britt-You're absolutely right, Sandra Phillips-You succeeded Tony Lamarr-Just in the nick of time Four sonics-Tell me you're mine Jackie Shane-In my tenement Junior Wells-Cramp my style Ethics-Standing in the darkness Players-Get right, Billy Davis - Stanky plus many, many more not bad for 10p each eh?
