Hi! - I wonder if someone could be kind enough to help me?

I'm a freelance writer, and I've done an article dealing with, amongst

other things, the records Ernie and Jean Terrell cut before Jean joined

The Supremes. That Fury single is a real mystery! - no-one seems to know

the catalogue number, or when it was released. There's a suggestion that

it may have been a promo item only, though one person has told me he's

sure the copy he had for years (and only recently sold!) was a regular

    issue.

If anyone could shed some light, and give me any information (a scan of

the record would be fantastic!) it would be very much appreciated.

    All good wishes,

    Simon Euan-Smith

I don't have the Fury 45 (I have a calla 45 and argo 45), but I do have an early Jean Terrell photo and an Ernie Terrell and the Heavyweights photo. If Simon wants scans, he can contact me through this board or by emailing me at the address at the bottom of www.sittinginthepark.com. Jean went to Farragut high school on the west side of Chicago, which is the same school that the Mandells and Conquistadors went to. I've been told (but have not confirmed) that the Ter-rels on ABC are also from Farragut and are related to Ernie and Jean. Thanks.

what sort of sound is the george jay?early group or what? was he a producer or label owner? ezzie

the george jay record is really good, I think he was white or hispanic, though, it's on the Texas Dynamic label (same as commands). It's a midtempo group record, maybe from like 1967. There are a bunch of other george jay + rocking ravens records but the other ones aren't really soul records, they have more a "teen" / doowop sound.

  6. It says LuckEy Davis on the label...

Lotusland records had a small quantity of the orange label a while back, maybe they've got a spare somewhere. Turns up on ebay every now and then. The yellow one is harder to find, but same versions. Instrumental flip.

    Amazing tune!

You might want to try Mike Vegh, who is on here, I think I've seen him sell it before.

  7. You didn't win the Cynthia on J.M's auction then Trev  Bloody rare 45 that mate, bet no one on here has it. Can do you the Barbara Jean & Lyrics version. shades.gif

I have it on a CD somewhere, I will try to dig it out. I can make you the thelma lindsay version if you want, I have the record of that.

There's a soundclip of "The Other One" on John Manship's site, Tone. Quite nice - a bit Tony Drakeish imo.

    Hope you are well mate.

it's funny, he sounds exactly like Jerry Butler in that soundclip.

I'm happy to bow to your superior knowledge, I know next to nothing about 70's stuff - just remember when I spoke to the label owner he said they had recorded a band called Sex - and they were deffo not based in NO - probably just co-incidence that it was the same name

    All the best

Actually I was hoping that you would say that you knew George and that he was still alive! Thanks.

  10. Hull was a legitimate label full stop - never, at any time during its lifetime was it a reissue label.

Several of the most famous doo-wop records of all time were first issued on either Hull or its sister label Mascot, including the Monotones' "Book Of Love", the Elegants' "Little Star", Shep and the Limelites' "Daddy's Home" and the Pastels' "Been So Long". It was founded and run, throughout its existence (1954-66) by Bea Kaslin. She sold it to Morris Levy of Roulette Records in 1967 and it has been the property of EMI since they acquired the Roulette group of owned labels (including Dynovoice, TK, Buttercup, End, Gone and many more) in 1988.

Contrary to what Chalky says above, Leo Price 's band was not the 'house band' for Hull. They did play on sessions other than Leo's own, including the Blonde Bomber's rockin' classic "Strollie Bun", but the label's musical director for most of its life was Teacho Wiltshire, who used the cream of New York's session musicians rather than just one band.

However, he was right in saying that Leo is Lloyd Price's brother. Although they're often mistakenly attributed to Lloyd, Leo also wrote several songs that Little Richard recorded including "Send Me Some Loving" and "Can't Believe You Wanna Leave"...

    ...here endeth the lesson yes.gif

there are a couple good soul records on hull near the end of its run. The admirations on hull (not Chicag) has an awesome group soul side and an okay northern side. The simplicities on hull is a okay girl group record.

Anyone have a soundclip if this is it any good?

    Tia

    Derek

I think this record is awesome, don't know if it appeals to northern ears, though. Always been a $5-$10 record. THere is a soundfile on the.soulclub.org. Sort of reminds me of the notations "i'm still here"

An essential purchase for the seventies bods imho.

Cool Reissue! I've never talked to Jerline Shelton, but I've been told by people that knew her that their first recording was that Honey-Duo-Twins record on Yambo. I didn't notice a mention in your bio, just a note in case you didn't know it.

  13. power house Chicago remember Tony Deller playing it in mid 1970s J Manships list for £30 Was it first played at the Torch? how old was she when she recorded it? Never seen a demo ( be rare must rare) any thing else nice on Jessica???? p.s how much is Tommy Hadley My baby came from out of nowhere Mutt & Jeff going for???

QUOTE(Mike B @ Apr 12 2007, 08:01 PM) link Nothing to do with the value but I think this was put out by the same guy who owned southern city records (paramount four / poodles ) I interviewed him around three years ago - he was really embarassed about the groups name lol. I must try and find his number and see whether he has any copies (being that its a modern tune I didn't ask him for a copy at the time whistling.gif )

    Mike

I think this was put out by George Redman, who was originally in Chicago and had the Moneytown / Blue Light labels. He then went to New Orleans and also had a Moneytown label there (I think a couple funk records by a group called ManFaith on the label). He also did this record, his name's all over it. Not associated with the DC moneytown. I don't think he's the southern city guy, unless you're referring to another name on the record. I heard that George had passed, although I'd love to hear otherwise.

  16. Bobby's version is good but Mr Burns has the edge i think, also writting credits are Robert Newsome which is actually Bobby James one of the same which would suggest he recorded it first before Jimmy, i seem to remember he told me that when we met also neither Bobby or Jimmy had any knowledge of 'Brand New Faces' which is aweful anyway.

And yes Ted a rare record which this auction final price reflects incredible...wish i could have kept it, still got Jimmy's Erica though...lol

    Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Is Bobby James' name really Bobby James? I heard it was Bobby Newsome (of the Vontastics) under another name. Can you confirm that it is a different person? Thanks a lot.
