I stand corrected - it was the prized item in Vernon's collection , not Lloyd's .
Thank you for pointing out the error of my ways , and may I give you top marks go to you for including the word " lothario " in a SS posting .
Malc Burton
Another example of NS legendary stories be twisted.
.I'm sure Liz had a copy of Winfield Parker in her hand, but like everyone in the known world, had just heard it was worth adding a zero onto the price.

could have gone to at least 3 other venues within 30 minutes of where I live on the night but chose to travel for over an hour for the same reasons
could say this most w/ends went to drax friday not even posted on events and travelled 30 plus miles passing 1 venue only 10 mins from home
have already stated dont do niters , because of the music at the ones I have attended,,and have better things to do on a sunday than stay in bed all day or try and stay awake feeling knackered
do attend across the board venues and most are ok , but then one gets put off when you go to a venue and you hear the dj say this is the latest
massive sound played out at so and so, and continues in this vein yes the odd ones are good but most dont do it for me and same for the punters because tumbleweed was blowin across the normally busy dancefloor.
likewise at a so called progressive foreign event le grande fromage dj plays a certain number proclaiming this is the best ever monster awesome sound and plays it at every opportunity not only him but several more dj,s get on the bandwagon , when we get home the missus (normally level headed and non violent) says if she hears that******** record again she will strangle the dj after restraining her at several venues where it as been played ,,may do the deed myself.
so I am not an oldies only person but why should I attend a venue on someones say so .when from what I have heard as examples being played at these venues leave me cold,
yes people have a right to express their opinions but please dont tell me where I should go or what I might like when they dont really know me
I know that I may come across as an ignorant uncouth unwashed dingle but please dont patronise me
Not telling you where to go,or patronising you, just tired of hearing how bad the rare/chinstroker scene is.
Don't want a fall out here, but if you want discussion on a forum..................

To Barney - Hi there. You've obviously had a good night in Forest Town, got your passions stirring.Nothing wrong with FT or passion,if you like to hear the same tunes month in month out. That's your choice.I live 10 minutes from Kingsway Hall but decided to got 2 hours away to a nighter (Burnley).
Why? For the music, the dj's and the people.
Boring as you may find it ,some of these chinstroker types have been around since the start, collecting, travelling, breaking the sounds that are considered Oldies, running venues and putting in the miles supporting the scene.
The oldies scene is a comfort zone, nothing wrong with that. But take people out of that and what you get is comments like "Don't know this therefore it must be sh*t".
There's 2 scenes at least within NS.Rare and Oldies. The fervent oldies crowd in general don't want to know anymore, but the Rare crowd have been there done that and moved on.
Parkash (Ian and Debbie). - Before slating the "chinstroker" scene how about trying it?.Done the oldies thing myself back in the day, appeals to me now and again. You'll be going to Riley Hall with Carl Piper i take it??.No-one's really interested in your clothes other than you and your friends etc...don't take it too seriously what people say.
btw if you went to Burnley you could have heard Deadbeats.
How long will NS last.? Enjoy what you're doing, thats all we need to know.I have no wish to keep repeating the same night over and over again.
I NEED STIMULATION !!!!!!!

The price of records that are genuinely rare doesn't push up the price of other records.
What pushes up the price of not so rare records is people witn no imagination of theire own.
For example ... a well known record that's been around for yrs but has been long forgotten .....a well known dj plays it to a crowd of people ..who gasp ..WOW ,havent heard that for ages ,did'nt it sound great!
Then a mass stampede of people in search of said record......all copies in the hands of unsuspecting dealers get snapped up quickly ....then its onto ebay for any other copies ...desperate people outbidding each other like crazy .....for that must have latest dare i say it "BUTCH SPIN" ...and finally the cat is well and truly out of the bag and someone decides to send a copy to John Manship auction
LEE FIELDS .....FRANKIE CORKER(yes i know i spelt it wrong
) ...RING ANY BELLS
Got to try and read what's up and coming,or pay the price. The "Butch Syndrome" applies to lots of quality DJ's.They play it ,it sounds f**ing brilliant - Joe Bloggs plays it,,,,,you can here the wind whistling.
How does that happen??
.btw there's not a bad record on Shrine imo.

'The problem is folks trying to make a business out of it.Money to be made'.
Absolutely right.....the web sites that let you choose your own tracks, Ala Carte's,Right Track's, Venues handing over Anniversary and Charity cd's!!
REALITY CHECK.....Boot cd's outweigh vinyl 50 to 1.....any comment on that little item?
'
put onto a free cd for mates isn't going to put a record company out of business'
It has.....say goodbye to Goldmine, Grapevine and Goldsoul.....all confined to cd history due to the above.
The NEW players are rubbing their hands with glee as they are fairly unknown and happy to be so.
Comment on boots cd's?.We are back to unauthorised again. Its didn't bother anyone BITD did it,like i said ,when it was nearer to the artists career's.!!When tapes were the thing, and boot vinyl was doing the rounds.
I agree with you about the "new players" among us.
Free cd's putting some out of business - well maybe some of the free cd's aren't so bad after all.Maybe some even filled a void,or tastes at the time.Or maybe some companies ran out of steam and ideas?.1000 cd's a week from venues?.Find that figure hard to believe. Most "promoters" can't be bothered to do it on a regular basis in my limited experience.

The 3 options left to the Rare Soul fan when deciding to make CD purchases.
1. Ace/ Kent £10-12 Lovingly compiled, but generally obscure with superb pckaging.
2. Supermarket/HMV box setty types 3 cd's for £5
3. Sit and wait for your local Soul night to offer the 'first 100 get a free cd'
Most go for option 3 then 2 and finally 1.
I doubt you will ever see a small indie release legitimate product again.
I think we have exhausted this one!
Of course option 1 is the best, but are we talking here about choosing one over the other?.
BITD when soul records were purchased as new releases,i entered into a "contract" with some of the money cascading thru the record companies, down to, hopefully, the artist.By purchasing the record my conscience is clear.
Then came along boots and re-issues.Money to be made. Not by me i hasten to add.Now we've got cd's.
Like i said earlier, records purchased, for a 3rd or even 4th time around,(who bothered to chase up that profit?) and put onto a free cd for mates isn't going to put a record company out of business.
The problem is folks trying to make a business out of it.Money to be made.

Yeah you're right, nowadays, no impact, but when the boom was in full swing 1999-2002 I can see how it would have annoyed the labels.
Digital music changed everything really, I do buy cd's now and again but they are mainly ones I know will have a decent booklet with them like Ace, if there's an album out I'll only usually want one track off it so I just go and find it on the net and download it. You can find just about anything nowadays and you can find it for free 99% of the time so I don't know how the record companies, even the majors, make any money at all.
Here's something you''ll know about Pete.
"All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved.Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting and copying of this record prohibited.".
Before having a go at free cds (not you Pete btw) we should all ask - What a public performance is?.Wether we've paid our dues re:broadcasting?.And wether we've ever copied a record?....what about the impact that had BITD, when BITD was a lot nearer.
.When we've exhausted that, then lets move onto Free Cd's.
-
yes but by giving the tracks away that means it's pointless the record companies licensing the track at their expense, what would rather do, be given a cd for nothing or pay 12 quid for one to get the same track? The free cd's stop the companies releasing product.
But we're talking about 40 year old records Pete. The chances of a record company wanting to make anything on an old track are slim surely.Unless its used on an advert.
I'm talking about the impact free cd's have on the cd sales nowadays.May be 1000 a week(?),but many are given to mates, with a track listing if you're lucky.

'complimentary cd from an event' eh....the sole reason the Northern cd business is knackered. It's even worse than Ala Carte!
Totally disagree. Its nothing like the same.A well put together free cd from a venue is always welcome. Its the same old, same old cd's that give it a bad name.
What's wrong with a giveaway if the records are originals ,bought and paid for by the cd's originator.?
Anything wrong with giving cd's to regular punters as a thank you, OR POTENTIAL "punters".?
Again we are back to the fact that if you're giving something away as opposed to charging for it,you ain't got a clue what you're doing.
Nothing like booting cd's for gain.

Always amazes me ,
when one of the big money records appears on ebay and someone starts a thread regarding price
Loads of people come on and start knocking the tune.
It's totally irrelevant to the thread topic imho
The fact is theyre rare and obviously very desirable to a lot of soul collectors ,but only a few can afford em.
If you were at a rare soul venue and someone put J.D BRYANT on the decks, trust me it'd sound awesome out loud.
Even William Powell in the right venue i:e a proper Northern soul night ,would fill the floor and have em drooling.
Theyre collectors pieces to me ,great examples that represent the scene wether you like the "rare soul" scene or the nostalgic oldies sounds.
I'm sure we all know a £10 record that sounds better ,but it has nothing to do with the price /rarity of the subject in hand.
Needless to say we are here to debate so carry on ...who thinks all shrine records are overpriced ,over hyped and just boring pieces of plastic
But then again ..we are here to debate all things soul ,so carry on
Nev,nev, nev, nev, nev. Are you saying that there's a 10 quid record better than JDB ?
..Or than WP?
.
Back to the Shrine find, wouldn't it be nice if the Cairo's had ED & 4 Bars on the flip...?
