Name All Detroit 60s Labels
oh, man, forgot about one of my most favoritest records, the soul superiors, "faith." label is Warfell. not northern, but as soulful a record as you'll ever hear. actually a gospel record. certainly belongs, though. (not that i'm the one setting the criteria; if i were, we'd have just one big list, with gospel, blues, 60s, 70s, everything.)

okay, i'm going to quibble over the inclusion of DOUBLE L. that's no detroit label. it's a new york label. it had a handful of detroit-related releases in a row in 1963: wilson pickett, herman griffin, buddy lamp. and another couple pickett releases. but lloyd price never lived in detroit, did he? (i'm willing to be corrected on that.) and while he certainly had some kind of deal(s) with some detroit folks circa '63, this can't be called a detroit label.

without doing a thorough search, i notice a couple missing from both lists that were definitely mentioned at some point above: VESTPOCKET BLACK SOUL both belong on 70s list. and we currently have ADELL on both lists.

a lot of these new 70s ones are already on the main list. so remove 'em from there as you add 'em to the new list?

Little Jimmy Scott
wait, "40 days" came out with two flips too, right? "message" and "nobody but you." what's this "soul message," anyway? instrumental backing to "do you get the message" or a different song? strangely, what i think of as the most common jimmy scott on giant, "40 days"/"message," isn't even listed on the soulful kinda music discography for the giant label.

he's right: Leo should be listed. The Jay Rhythm record....

LMA and El Toro definitely both Detroit...circa 1970, don't know specific years.

Name All Detroit 60s Labels
tayster was a new york label in the sixties, but at some point circa 1969 or 1970 seems to have been based in detroit, for three specific releases that i know of: the chico and buddy 45 and the damn sam the miracle man 45 and lp....

this is great! thanks, everyone, especially chalky. some notes: you've got Chex and Saxy twice. should Gemni be Gemini? (el count executives label? but 70s...) it should be Genebro, not Genbro. is Not forgetting a label or a stray note that got in? are Star Maker and Starmaker both right? is Vip just a repetition of V.I.P.? La Val was based very far west, on the other end of the state, no? Big Mac (not Big Mack) was in saginaw, no? should Billesse be on there? there are a few scattered about that aren't capitalized...

Ren-Cen should come off and be added to 70s list. and Renaissance should be added to that list as well.

right. but maybe this is a different Jay-Walking? pretty strange credits for a harrisburg record (though it does fit right into the harrisburg jay-walking numbering system): Jay-Walking 018 Eddie Parker Can't You See (What You're Doing to Me) (Jack Ashford) Do the Choo Choo (E. Willis, J. Ashford, L. Chandler) Produced by Jack Ashford and Lorraine Chandler Arranged by Paul Riser

inkster IS a suburb of detroit. a few of these other labels are from places like grand rapids, which is a couple hours' drive from detroit, and saginaw, which is even farther. hot line music journal may have been distributed by amy/mala/bell, but it certainly has to be considered a grand rapids label, like wood city and equal. re Aquarius: are there two (or three?) detroit labels with that name? or is the yellow candace love aquarius the same as the multicolored soul-inpressions, domestic five, and ultimate ovation aquarius and the red calvin golden aquarius?

re DRUMHEAD: seems silly to exclude it based on lathrup village address; lathrup village is a very near suburb of detroit, so this is completely different from a label being based in, say, saginaw, flint, or grand rapids. if we're going to be this strict, we'd have to lose mutt, too, since it was based in inkster, another suburb. what about the BURT label? strictly speaking nashville-based, but surely a detroit connection, right? part of magic city setup, owned by ernest burt...did it start in detroit and then relocate to nashville with mr. burt?

re DRUM: seen it listed in the past as a detroit label, but it's surely new york, and billy hambric has no detroit connections...does he? Drumhead, on the other hand--now, there's another Detroit label.

also, chalky, the flaming arrows that didn't get national distribution through atlantic are GM pressings. i am 100 percent certain these are detroit records. i'm sure carl p can back me up on this.

well, i'm staring at crow 42 right now, and it says across the bottom: 10049 TERRY, DETROIT, MICH. at some point, crow/flaming arrow seems to have been based in georgia, but it was definitely a detroit enterprise for much of its run. mel: cu-wu: 4 singles by ace jones 1 by deep heat 1 by little man & the inquires (that's leonard "little man" kaigler) 1 by five ounces of soul detroit record-store owner and dj the famous coachman seems to have been involved. that's all i know.
