Bazza

Hiya Bazza, yep mate your dead right there but as they say nothing stays the same eh?? We all have happy memories of the place and i'm right back there if i shut me eyes for a few seconds. Wonderful times, just wish we had a time machine to go back and do it all again. I for one would be there in a flash. Stay soulful, Tony E.

Hi suinoz. Did you used to know Ryder Gary and Liz Big Janet and Spike back in the day?. I saw you and Tony when you were at the sept skeg weekender 2007 and i thought i recognised you and im wondering if it was from Fleet, St Ives, back in 76,77,78,79. Will say hello if you coming over this year to Skeg. Tony you going to be Djing anywhere when you come over Nightnurse mentioned something but cant remember what he said now?. As reguards the Nottm Palaise what fantastic alldayers they were, we used to start with Colemans then the Brit on to either Wigan or another allnighter then still have energy to do the Palaise all dayer on the sunday, Mick knight is still around he drinks in Beeston Notts i think he was the success behind the Palaise and the best manager they have ever had he loved the soulies and the plush red settees set out in a half moon shape if i remember rightly? OH HAPPY DAYS.
Hiya Soulfulbabe, Oh yes happy day's indeedy. Did know loads of soulies at the Palais and used to travel up from Peterborough for nearly all of them. Defo coming over in September and will be deejaying at Bournmouth mini nighter on 6th, Rugby allnighter 13th, Brighouse Ritz 19th, Six Hills 20th and the Saturday at Skeggy weekender. Did do the Fleet and St. Ives back in the mid 70's as i lived in Peterborough so went to most venues round there including Kettering. Can't wait to catch up with all our mates so hope you will be at some of the gigs, oh and try and bring one of them red setees with ya lol. Stay soulful, see yas soon. Tony " T BONE " Western Australia.

I was really surprised that one on ebay only made just $600, someone got a real bargain. Unless I'm wrong, pretty sure there have only been 2 or 3 other copies found ? I know of the one that Carl F had & the one Tommy had, then the one Phil has got, are there any others ??
It's one of those records that you listen too on cd or tape & think...weird, then you hear it out loud & it sounds really good.
G'Day PhilT, if you read this thread mate, send me a reply and let me know if your still gonna flog me the copy of Billy Hines you said you had when you get out of the scene. I am still interested. email address is suantone@southwest.com.au
Cheers mate, Tony Western Australia.

This really was my favorite place in the world! feeling all sad and nostalgic now.....used to catch the train from Kettering up to the dayers until the boyfriend was old enough to drive.....oh so many years ago...the red setees, the wonderful dancefloor the very posh "ladies boudoire" with all those mirrors, just to remind you how rough you looked in the early hours of the morning, also remember them serving the best burgers in the world downstairs too lol. remember one christmas our mate Herman nicking the chrismas tree from the wimpy up the road and trying to get in with it on his head - strangely it didnt work - Has anyone got any photos of the Palais (inside or out) they seem to be very few and far between and i would love to see some.
Debs xx
Ain't got any piccies Debs but my mate in the U.K. has still got all the tapes we made on one of them old cassette recorders. We used to set it up by the stage and then go and dance our rocks off. Alway's loved queing to get in, specially when it was freezing cold as everyone was so friendly. Never be another venue quite like it, i reckon in it's own way it was as good as the Casino. 600 soulies clapping to ' a little bit hurt ' ooh i can see it now. Makes the hairs stand up don't it? Best record for me there was Epitome of Sound, still got my copy. Getting soulful down under nowaday's, GREAT. ktf Tony E.

the old palias kept on going right up till around 2002 , over the years they had nighters in the mid 80's as well they somewhat changed the decor around this time the d.j box was moved to the right side of the floor the stage was demolished and replaced by a bar as was the clockroom the floor was reduced and put on two levels and as for the bali hi well that was totally unrecognisable the place holds great memories for me as i d.jd there in the late 70's and 80's te last time i went to my home town the old place was boarded up and the old globe on the roof was no more a very sad sight to see
steve p
Yep Steve know what you mean mate. I clearly remember going downstairs to the then Jazz Funk room, was it a revolving floor?? Sad to know the stage was replaced by a bar of all things, i remember the bar being to the right of the dancefloor as you walked in, certainly had a few lager shandies there. Loved the bogs right near the entrance and they alway's smelled of Brut..... Brilliant memories and i can still smell it if i think hard enough. Were some great dancers there and the girls, well what else can you say, other than the friendliest on the planet. Will consign them day's to the memory box. Tony E.

Just reading through a few threads and the old memory gland starts twitching, thats memory not mammory so got to thinking about the brilliant alldayers at the Palais Nottingham during the mid 70's. Anyone remember the red setees round the dancefloor?
Used to travel from Peterborough and never missed one, bloody fantastic. Now living in Australia and was wondering what happened to the place. Anyone who went i would love to hear from you. Stay soulful, Tony E.

HI WHERE DID YOU GET THAT FIGURE FROM ....200,000 members
LUCKY TO GET 600 SOME NIGHTS AT THE END OF THE CASINO 79-81 AND A HANDFUL SAT NIGHT AFTER AN OLDIES NIGHTER ! IVE ALLSO EXPERIANCED EMPTY TOTW AND 100 CLUB TOO!
Yep your not wrong there mate, but the Casino did have over 200, 000 names on it's membership lists over the 8 years it was going. Gawd knows what happened to em all at the end but as i said i reckon many were on the ride so to speak. Let's just give the Casino the credit it deserves and it's place in the history of the Northern Soul scene is well documented. I for one will alway's say " It'll never be over for me " The new Casino Cafe in the Grand Arcade is well worth a look, hope to see you there on September 20th. Tony E.

morning matt, yeh i know what you mean, never been a dancer but i struggle to string two records together
but as you know i can talk for england
G'Day guy's, had a sticky beak at most of the comments made, good, bad or indifferent. I have to say the scene started for me in late 1973 just after the Casino opened and just walking in the place blew me away. Went till mid 74, was 19 then and trying like buggery to be a champion cyclist. Bloody hard to ride a 25 mile race straight after an allnighter but it had to be done and NO i would'nt have had it any other way. Northern Soul was and still is my total passion and there are still a whole lot of soulies around today that went to the Casino, we even have several right here in Australia. We are the ones that were in the scene for the long haul and i often wonder what happened to the thousands, was it 200,000 members that packed it all in after December 1981?? Some were obviously " on the wave for the ride " and did'nt really give a toss about the music or the talented artists as long as they were seen " in the place " I feel really strongly about getting this fantastic music to the younger crowd, lets spread the faith, not
" Keep It " Yes there were venues that were as good as the Casino for music quality and atmosphere, Notts. Palais alldayers for me, i never missed one, bloody awesome.
Am now an ex pat living in Perth and running monthly soul nights at a venue with dare i say, a similar feel to the Casino, even smells the same, then it should do it's a 120 year old ex military drill hall with a curved ceiling and flouros. My hairs stood on end when i first saw the place, it was like walking into a time warp. We do get a lot of appreciative youngsters in, and yes they do dance, not like us but it's about having fun ain't it?????
I came to England last year for the Casino reunion and will be there in September for the 35th anniversary, a 12000 mile jaunt.....How's that for support?? As they say " if it's in your blood, it's there for good. If anyone reading this is going, look me up, you never know you might recognise me even after all these years. Stay soulful. Tony E.

Trev
all your taste's in your mouth pal
The very fact that it includes the line "to get some egg foo yung" always made it a must have in my twisted mind.

Phil
g G'Day Phil, could be interested in your copy when you decide to sell up. The one i missed for 600 U.S. was beleive it or not my original copy that i sold in 1977 for 4 quid and has my handwriting on it. Call it sentimental value if you want. Regards Tony. Perth.

We got about seven today, they started with one saying Karen had added us to her favourite/friends list........... were not even a member of the Soul Galore site.
Bit of a pain in the neck - anyone with any ideas of how to eliminate will be greatly appreciated (bit of a computer dummy myself) and leaving for UK next week so dont really want this load of crap downloading into our inbox whilst were on hols.........
