bloody hell wish they had played northern at my school disco
. It would have saved me time searching for something to get into instead of the usual top 20 crap
Not really northern as such. Tamla Motown, Atlantic etc,
It was also before Dave Godin's soul of the north quote.
I told some of the older lads in town that I liked soul, so on my 16th birthday they took me to the Mecca.
So to Paul King, Joe & Pete Sol, Tony Hurd and Mick Fish. Thanks.

mine was wakefield tiffs circa 71/72 they used to have a side room the nocturne bar where we weere not allowed to go in due to age but you could here it......... AND IT WAS AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE , better than all the pop sh#te played in teenie disco.
Rob
Funny thing Darwin Tiffs, room they used for the soul room was called nocturne as well.
It run on a Wednesday night from summer of 74 to the summer of 76.
Had all-dayers there as well, most of the big name DJs at the time where on at one time or other.

When did you receive your first true real exposure to northern soul and decided this is for me and what was the 1st record if you can remember.
Rob
Got into soul at school disco and new era youth club, what 1969.
1st real exposure to northern, Blackpool Mecca Oct 1971.
That was the point of no return for me.
I don't really know what the 1st record that stood out.

magnificent men - keep on climbing - brilliant dancer - possibly their best track - certainly sounds soulful rather than blue -eyed soul like some of their others
hesitations - soul superman - inc that's what love is (same backing as eddie parker - i'm gone - used to play this at buzzard
mandrill - never die
Mandrill is on a 45, nice cover to the LP.

Hi Pete
I've had two, when I sold the first, regretted it so got another, then was pestered to death by Gary Fields, so sold that to him, never should have done it.
Dave
I can imagine Gary pestering you as well.
His he still about not seen him for about 5 or 6 years.
Dave.
BTW Yvonne Daniels very underated record, well worth playing out again.

The recent talk about the Hardrock got me rememberancing this one.
Mid week Night around 1974 ish, Ian Levine and Colin Curtis.
Happy Days
Anyone else recall??
Tony
Thursday nights I think and All-Dayers as well.
We used to pay half fare on the bus from town, it was something silly like 4p.
Ya it was a good night, but back than it was soul nights out 7 days a week.
North West back than really was the place to live.
Dave.

I was gonna sell Carl Willingham a copy of The Tomangos, a mate had borrowed off me.
However when I got it back it was F**ked, to be fair my mate ended up paying for it.
B.T.W. This was about 20 years ago.
Let's not forget when Dave McCadden left Dickie's copy of The Jades, on the top of the range in the chippy.

We have all had top sounds in our collection that we have memories of that were destroyed for example
I bought a copy of the O'JAYS i dig your act. Back in 1977, ok it was only £1.50 in the the Casino recrord bar, thanks for my mates advice Mr Manus Docherty the first sound i ever bought at Wigan, I pulled it out of my collection over the xmas and was cracked. God you can emagine I was totally gutted as it was the first record I ever bought at wigan casino! I bought another copy exactly the same and the same label 33 years later and kept it ever since!!
Have anyone lost any rare or dear memories?

Booted after a couple of plays on the strength of "Wash & Wear love" which is a totally different type of sound.
Never had an original-but bought a boot on here last year for £5 as I had heard it out somewhere as well.
A Cleethorpes sound via Rick Scott ?? so may explain why so many knew it at Drax
Rob
Played in the north west as well, back in the day.
Not one of the biggies but I have always liked it.

there are some links HERE Benji but rapid share was unavailable to free users at the time of trying. Dunno if tyhe links lead to the original short film or not. Will try again later unless someone has membership to rapidshare, mine ran out over Christmas and I didn't renew.
Sure looks like she ready to breakaway.
Always nice to see photos of artists.

==========
whats the difference white pop soul or black rock and roll (the worse side of rnb i may add!)
sorry Russ is my hero in terms of most of the stuff he played at wigan and ive got to stick up for him
regards mark
champion of the underdog!!
Mark, I don't think anybody put up that in the 1st year alone the amount of LP tracks that Russ played.
eg Four Seasons "I'm gonna change"
Gladys Knight "Ain't no sun"
Marvelletts "Your love can save me"
Thelma Houston "I ain't going nowhere"
Mr Bloe "Land of a 1000 dances"
Mike Post "Afternoon of the rhino"
Outsiders "Lonely man"
Magnifent Men "Just walk in my shoes"
Danny Wagner "This thing called love"
Total Eclipes "6-0-Clock"
Al Wilson "Passport"
Excitiers "Movin too slow"
Watts 103rd st R. B. "The joker"
Just a few off top of my head,
Russ did play Yvonne Baker before Ian Levine but it was off a S.S. emidisc like Strings a-go-go (Double cookin), Footsie etc.
It was a few weeks later Ian got a real one, and not long after John Anderson got a few and most of the top DJs at the time had it.
Also we can't forget the many inst's via S.S. that hit the decks in 1974.
Russ did play some great stuff at Wigan, but also played some of the very worst, we all know what he's remembered for.
Dave.
Wigan Playlists Early 75
in All About the SOUL
You should know, Agent Smith.
