Dear Uncle Pervy of Carshalton : you need to get out more .........

    Malc Burton

It was a valid question Malc. We know she's a Los Angeles Soul Goddess with at least one well-rounded and extremely highly-hitched left boob which she very skilfully framed with arrangement of her left arm and hand. I just felt sorry for the other one.............. tongue.gif

Well Christmas came slightly early this year so I treated myself to a copy of the "The Complete Ty Karim: Los Angeles Soul Goddess". A blinding release and obviously should be in every fanatical Soul fans collection! Full marks to Ady and the Ace/Kent team for the Soul release of the year IMO!

Just one slightly perturbing issue surfaced however.............

As I was listening to the mighty impressive lungs of Ms Karim, I thought I'd take a closer look at her. So I looked @ the cover and couldn't help noticing the interesting placement of her left boob. Is it really that high up? Or was she bunching it up with the strategic positioning of her left arm? And where's her right one? Questions, questions........

Hell of a lung on her anyway! Essential purchase!

Also, many thanks and the highest regards to Mark Bicknell for hosting one of Starpoint Radio's most-listened to shows - The Soul Shack. Great stuff Mark, we'll miss you on Sundays and best for the future!

  4. Believe all asbestos has been removed from the building (safety issue) - I know that some pieces of The Highland Room dancefloor have been "liberated" by certain individuals - better watch Ebay in the coming weeks (how sad) !!!!

I only live 3 miles from The Mecca so will keep people posted as to what is happening - just off to FloorsRUs to get my "original Highland Room laminate flooring" - tee hee.

LOL, cue a mental vision of a Grandad pointing to a beautifully framed presentation display of a wooden tile above the fireplace and saying to his grandson "Does tha know what that is lad?".................

  5. I wasn't over keen on "Bubblegum Breakthrough" when it was first played but I absolutely love it now! I remember hearing it virtually everywhere circa '73 so a big record without a doubt. Everything but the kitchen sink is on there and the record is a masterpiece of instrumentation. Sounds much better these days!

Instrumentals used to be massively popular and would break up the nights brilliantly - especially if the vocal side was also big at the time. There was nothing like hearing a huge instrumental version LOUD. My faves were:-

"Crying Over You" - Duke Browner/The Kaddo Strings

"Nothing But Love" - John Rhys/the Tartans

    "Let's Have A Love-In" - Wingate Love-In Strings

"The Way You've Been Acting Lately" - Al Kent

"Psychedelic Soul" Pt 2 - Saxie Russell

    "R'n'B Time" - Rodney Jones

Instrumentals were one of the things which inspired me when I got on the scene. I couldn't believe the quality of the string sections on these little records. The fact that small Detroit labels like Ric-Tic, Golden World, Impact and Inferno had full string sections on 'em blew my mind at the time. Startling musicianship........

I'm posting this on here because a lot of people like the walrus of luuuurve. So for those of you of you who have always wondered what a vocal would be like on "Love's Theme", well here it is courtesy of Neil @ https://atomixextendedcuts.blogspot.com/200...x-re-shape.html.

The Love Unlimited Orchestra/Brownstone - "Love's Theme"/"If You Love Me"

  7. Technical snafus mean that Sundays show will not be available via the usual link, which is a real bitch because it was a KILLER show. Oh well, c'est la vie, these things happen but what can one do? There was a power outage which resulted in some breaks in the internet transmission which meant that some portions of the show were lost forever dammit!

However, here's what I did play, so you can IMAGINE how good the show was LOL.......

    Hey Ian

I was reading the Pinnacle thread and you seem to know a bit about the business. I've read 'Death of Rhythm' & Blues and 'The History of Stax records' etc etc but could do with more info. What would be the market coverage of say a The Tempests, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson or Garnet Mimms album as opposed to The Miracles or The Tams etc. Any ideas???

    Cheers Kev

    Hi Kev,

You'll get a much more detailed response from Tony Rounce or Ady Croasdel on this area - they'll know much better than me the ins and outs of the Wand/Sceptre catalogue and distribution set-ups in the 60's I'm sure.

However, I can recommend a few books if you liked the Stax one (which is excellent in my opinion - I met Rob Bowman last year). Try these:-

Exploding: The Highs, Hits, Hype, & Hustlers Of The Warner Music Group - Stan Cornyn

Off The Record: An Oral History Of Popular Music - Joe Smith

The Sound Of The City: The Rise Of Rock N' Roll - Charlie Gillett

Making Tracks: The History Of Atlantic Records - Charlie Gillet

Clive: Inside The Record Business - Clive Davis

There's loads of others but they tend to deal more with Rock/Pop acts and more recent times. The 'Exploding' book is a great read if you're into the history of Warner Brs and record company politics!

    Ian D

  11. It was played for a long time - but it was not played every week - it was "mothballed" every now & then. Just when you thought it may have been dropped Colin would play it again as an unexpected treat. It was the same for records like George Wydell, Major Harris, Leroy Britten, John Stansbury, Earnest Mosely etc.

BTW Betty Lloyd is just such a brilliant record & evokes so many happy memories for me & all that "last hour" generation from The Highland Room.

.....plus Bernie Williams, Denise Keeble and Beverly Wheeler to think of a few more. I bet a last hour @ The Mecca thread would throw up a few more surprises.......I don't remember the John Stansbury record though? Any good?

    Ian D

  12. Another 2 hours of beautifully sublime Soul music spanning 4 decades and a smorgasbord of genres from uplifting House & Garage, Soulful Disco, Irresistible 80's, Northern Soul, Modern Soul, Crossover Soul, Killer Slowies and Uplifting Gems......

Dunno what happened towards the end of the show here but apparently "the stream started buffering" (whatever that means) towards the end of the GREAT Ray Simpson tune and then kept dropping out towards the end of the show, so we've had to fade the recording appropriately dammit!

Will try and post up a better link in the next day or so, but here's 1 hour 50 minutes of the full 2 hours of the time being........

I got asked to pull out a few Xmas songs for a Starpoint Radio Xmas show which is coming up, so I thought I'd dig out a few Northern things and I'm struggling already.

The only one I could find was this......

Artie Fullilove "Santa Claus Please Listen To Me" Marlu 1001

    https://www.zshare.net/audio/523814705ea9a338/

The best bit on the track is when he sings "Santa Claus please listen to me, please don't bring me a gun" LOL.....

    Any others out there?

    Ian D

  14. Just as The Carstairs stood for The Mecca in 1974, so Doctor Buzzard epitomised it in 1976.

That song in particular got played every hour. Hard to put it into context now, as it's just so different to anything that would now get played on the Northern Soul Scene. It was also THE anthem at The Ritz.

Yeah, but the Northern thread is there with Charlie Calello, Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell involved........

    Ian D

  15. Done it this morning - I do have the 45, (just ripped one this morning)
