  1. Good start though Ian. I'm glad to see the car crashes have faded out! Oddly enough I can relate to that!

Oh there's some great car crashes in there Una! I totalled two cars coming back from Cleethorpes alone! I needed some action sequences in there - it can't all be Sex, Drugs and Northern Soul can it.........? :g:

  2. Discounting this tripe, it would be great if J Manship, a member on here, were willing to share a few anecdotes.

Obviously not to your taste then Dave........

And Johnny did share an anecdote or two on the Greatest Record Finds Of All Time thread from earlier this year.....

Season's goodwill to you too mate!

  5. Will look forward to this Ian....sounds like it will be an interesting read.

How many pages relating to Simon Soussan?

Most of chapter 8 I reckon. I've kept a few great stories back as well which wouldn't have been appropriate for S.S. but will work nicely in the context of a book hopefully.......

    Ian D :D

  6. More Salsoul please and more gear would be most acceptable, and interesting.

    Thanks for MC.

Oh, there'll be plenty of Salsoul in there. It's my favorite label of all time and I've known all the players since the 70's, so plenty of stories there. Hopefully I'll remember 'em all.......

Have they got DVDs to promote?

Seriously though that would be a great idea, I quite enjoyed it when Ian Dewhirst took us back in time a few months back.

Can't see Sam strolling on stage though but Mr Manship is on here though, obviously so is Ady :D .

Having said that you'd have to have some time on yer hands to get into a 50 page stroll down memory lane, be great if they could but its a bit of an ask - but if you don't ask you don't get

Well, I'm actually in the process of piecing something together - it's been an ongong project for a number of years now and I've got a number of chapters together but reality/everyday life/financing my lifestyle keeps getting in the way LOL!

For instance I was just about to roll my sleeves up and get seriously cracking when a Sugarbabes production project, Soul Intention records and a number of compilation albums suddenly popped up. But that's what I like about Soul Source - it leads me down avenues which I was in danger of forgetting about. At the moment, it's panning out like this:-

It's a long tractectory but that's kind of got it down in a simplistic form. Doubtless there'll be thousands of other things to add once I actually start writing in earnest. That's the hard bit by the way!

That's why Soul Source is good. I've pieced together a nice chunk of the L.A. story and quite a few record-collecting stories from writing some Soul Source threads. So all positive.

6 pages a day for three months should do it.......

Book should be ready for late next year touch wood, if I survive that long LOL......

  8. Have seen other copies of this record without the reservice written on the label does this mean it is a reissue just wondering was going to sell it know its a cheapie £20 quid or there abouts any info cheers

    post-8405-1225998140_thumb.jpg

As an ex promo guy, I think it's a 'reservice' in regard to U.S. Radio Stations, which means that they re-pressed another load of promos and re-serviced the radio stations. They were effectively re-promoting the record, which means that there were two runs of the promos - the second lot being called 're-service' to prompt the radio stations to have another listen.

It shows they had faith in the record. But it bombed anyway didn't it? I used to have it and it was just OK, so I flogged it. Is it better than I thought?

  9. Hi Everyone,

Firstly a major thank you for your support and kind words. It really has been a traumatic 24 hours with a reasonably happy ending.

Let me outline exactly what happened.

Following a terrific get together at the ION Bar, London on Monday night, we drove back on Tuesday and had a 7pm meeting at the Gateway Hotel, Nottingham, situated 1 mile from the M1/Jnc 26.

We parked outside the Main Entrance as the Car Park was full. Good lighting, CCTV etc.

The main problem with this well known venue is, it backs on to the Broxtowe/Strelley/Cinderhill estates, notorious for Drugs/Burglary etc, which overshadow the majority of decent people who live there.

At 9.30pm, we realised someone had smashed the whole of the back window, which is no mean feat on a 4x4. You could not see into the back, so clearly a random 'lets take a chance n grab' scenario by local druggies.

Following a sleepless night for the pair of us, a good samaritan from Broxtowe called us at 11am to say he had found my records strewn over the grass verge on Banks Lane close to the hotel along with our credit cards, driver's license etc etc. He discovered them cycling to work at 7am this morning.

Clearly these were robbed by local scally's and not Soul fans.

At 3pm this afternoon, I got the majority of my treasures back.

At first glance my Lou Pride and Yum-Yums originals are missing and some British 45's are slightly water damaged ie Mary Love(King), Lynn Randell(CBS) with Herbert Hunter(Spar) cracked.

My credit cards are intact but obviously we had cancelled them last night.

The police are busy collating surveillance data, so hopefully the perpetrators will be caught.

I think we all share the same mind about the thieving our Northern Soul originals.

PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE OF YOURS!

Once again.....thank you for your concern. The pair of us can sleep a tad easier tonight.

    Best Wishes,

    Kev and Sam

PS To John Manship...thanks for your call....very much appreciated.

Phew. Thank god for that. So sorry this happened but it's much better then the mental aggravation of not knowing whether you were deliberately targetted or not! At least it's a happy-ish ending.

    Best,

    Ian D :(

I think Russ mentioned that at it's peak Wigan had 100, 000 members .That would've been some night if they'd all turned up the same night eh ? Best ,Eddie

Yep, I've heard that figure bandied about as well. I think you have to make a distinction almost between hard-core and soft-core Northern Soul fans. It could be argued that there were many local discos which played Northern Soul (or Northern Soul spots) especially in most of the Midlands/Northern towns, all of which had a regular element of fans even if they didn't necessarily go to nighters. I guess it was these type of fans that made up the bulk of the sales of some bootlegs - 20k in the cases of Gloria Jones and the Mike Post Coalition reputedly.

Also there was a run of 'crossover' Northern Soul hits like "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" - The Tams (No.1 in '71) "There's A Ghost In My House" (No.3 in '74) and even "You Sexy Sugar Plum" - Rodger Collins (No.22 in '76) which means that a lot of people bought the records - at least 250,000 in the case of the Tams and R. Dean Taylor but whether they could be considered fans is another question.

I reckon 10k hardcore and maybe 100k softcore between '70-'77?

  12. Released on 10-Nov (according to hmv.com). All well-known classics, I'm wondering whether to take a punt on this one - Seal has a more-than-decent voice, though I've heard none of these.

    Should I buy or not?

  14. Hi there Ian!

A wonderful show. A very emotional and heartfelt tribute to Levi Stubbles (yes, that was his name, although better known to the general public as Stubbs), his legacy will go on and on...

Loads of other great things on your show as well:

Rufus & Chaka Khan - Any Love - Dimitri Re-Edit

Fat Larry's Band - Straight From The Heart

Sonja Grier - Right Here, Right Now

Denitria Champ - I've Had Enough

Halo - Let Me Do It

Ruth Dawes - I Love Only You WHAT A CRACKER - I NEED THIS ONE

Vermeytta Royster - The Shelter Of Your Arms

Tina Broussard - Why Do I Feel So Sad

Private Eye - No One Can Love You Like Me

Bobby Caldwell - I'll Be Around WHERE´S THIS FROM PLEASE, FEATURING THE VOCALS OF JEFFREY OSBORNE

    Johnny Hudson - Better Love

    Cheers,

    Melismo

    Hi Mel,

Glad you enjoyed it dude! Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I've been away for a week.

The Ruth Dawes is just thunderous isn't it? Killer groove from Profile Records. The Bobby Caldwell track is from the CD Come Rain Or Come Shine (1999).

    I'm back live again tomorrow!

    Best,

    Ian D :D

  15. I suggest you tell him he is most unwelcome, in no uncertain terms, and if he dares to show his face, I will not be responsible for the consequences.

Just tell him to keep clear. It's a private party and his is absolutely 100% NOT WANTED AND NOT WELCOME

Oh come on Ian - we want the night to have some pzazz and an element of frission don't we? James is just playing his angry outspoken young man card - not a million miles disimilar to someone else I knew at that age years ago!

I'm not sure if he can make it anyway............

    Ian D

  16. Lightweight

LOL, trust me to pick the one forum where such things don't impress!

Of course, anyone who might want to introduce some new tools to my armoury, is very welcome. I'll probably start flagging @ around 11.00pm.......... thumbsup.gif

On the other hand, I'd better keep my shit together thinking about it. I'll have Levine yelling in my ear whilst I'm keeping a sharp eye on Gavin at the same time as sorting James Trouble out with a drink in the deepest darkest corner of the gaff! That's if his timetable permits that is..........

    Ian D

  17. Will you be pacing yourself beverage wise , on Monday night Ian ? ........

    Malc Burton

Well it's a Monday night so I'll probably keep things pretty low key, so I guess it'll be 2 x grams of coke, a bag of hydroponic skunk, a couple of Kesey endorsed acid tabs, a handful of uppers, downers, snoozers and screamers, £20 quids worth of MDMA, a half-pint of liquid mescalin and a few beers. That should get me in the mood....... laugh.gif

    Ian D

  18. Ian

If I remember rightly there were T Shirts with the same message and dint someone spit in his face at a Ritz all dayer.

Personally dont like his approach and his disco-isation (is that a word ? ) of classic tunes and the crap SWONS IMO

However, I try to treat other people as I expect others to treat me

    Steve

Agree with the last sentence for sure Steve. thumbsup.gif

But again, if someone actually went to the trouble of making up "Levine Must Go" tee shirts as well as a banner in the mid 70's (when such things weren't as easy as today), that strikes me as being a bit of a concerted personal campaign by someone who went to great lengths to attack IL dontcha think? That kind of sounds like a vendetta to me........

If it were me, I might have have voiced my discontent and even had a discreet word with the management or better still just gone to Wigan. But printing up tee-shirts.....?

    Ian D

  19. Right this is definitely (hopefully!) my last post on this mainly because some half truths are being written, from my point of view these are the facts:

    1. Some of the videos/music that have been posted on this thread are dire IMHO.

    2. I do not dislike Ian Levine even if some people would appear to be happy if i did.

    3. Some of the music that Ian has made in the past & the present is great if not brilliant, Venicia Wilson for example, i also appreciate the vast amount of work that has gone into this project even if it isn't to my taste.

    4. I do not have any personal problems with anyone & do not enjoy conflict or falling out with anyone, i DO NOT bait people intentionally.

    5. I would gladly chat to & have a beer with anyone on this thread & that includes Ian.

    6. I hope this thread can carry on without my input & that i haven't ruined for everyone.

    7. Have a nice weekend & enjoy your Soul whatever form it may be in.

    Simon

Dammit! We're running out of people to argue debate with! laugh.gif

    Have a good weekend Simon.

    Ian D
