  1. Is this film ever coming out?

Don't want be rude but am getting bored reading about it and the feature on the One Show was ages ago. I hope it is great and goes to be a success, but please release the damn thing!

I know what you mean Jim. It's been painful. The kind of machinery you need to launch even a 'little' UK film like this against the Hollywood blockbusters is pretty formidable. We have a date of 15/09/14 for the soundtrack and 20/10/14 for the film. The plus side is that it may have been a long frustrating lead-up, but the sheer buzz from everyone involved in the film is that this is something very, very special. Looks like it's gonna be a key U.K. film for 2014. The overall vibe from everyone involved across all areas is just incredible - everybody is taking this film very seriously. Quite right too. It'll be worth the wait don't worry!

  2. Really looking forward to the film & Elaine will do it justice for sure.  The soundtrack comes with the territory & I hope it sells well.

What I cant & never can understand, is why people try to deny that the scene was fuelled by amphetamines, 99.9% of those that attended Allnighters were kept up all night dancing because of the use of speed.  Nobody is trying to glorify it, it just was & for very, very many people it was all part & parcel, for some it still is to this day, I find it totally ridiculous that you can just sweep it under the carpet, almost laughable really.....I also find the suggestion insulting, that just because you dropped a few caps  you had no appreciation of the music, without naming names, some of the most respected & knowlegeable people on the scene had a mis spent youth shall we say & some of the best record collections were allegedly financed through it....I have the greatest respect for everybodies opinion, but some of the holier tha thou drivel really gets my gander !!!.

I was serving in the Armed Forces, so even if I had wanted to partake, I couldnt have, but seriously, I cant think of one of my civillian friends who didnt, not one....If the film doesnt deal with the subject realistically, then it wont be the real deal, it happen(s)ed....get over it & stop trying to white wash us, I feel sorry for those that didnt go, but have a passing interest in what it was like, when folk pretend certain things didnt happen....

The film will be brilliant, I know Elaine & she will have made sure that it is as true to life as possible, now lest wait & see.

    Best Russ

Glad you like it Russ. This film has been a very very delicate balance of being true to the essence of the scene without compromising any quality, whilst hoping to also appeal to a wider international audience. A tall order for a very British film. However, if ever a U.K. film captured the whole essence and experience of an incredible cultural scene, then I can think of no one better to have directed it then Elaine Constantine. She has my undying respect for managing to capture a piece of historical magic that happened in the North of England in the late 60s and early 70s which I think will be the template that future generations will look fondly upon and wished they'd been there. Like us.

    Can't wait to see it.

HURTXCD125 Northern Soul: The Film: Soundtrack Plus - 2 CD/1 DVD Box Set                      15/09/2014

In one of the most anticipated releases of the year, Harmless are proud to announce that we will be issuing the soundtrack to the forthcoming film, “Northern Soul” directed by Elaine Constantine. Early viewings confirm that “Northern Soul” will be the most accurate portrayal yet of this legendary musical movement which started in the north of England in the late 1960s and has now spread around the world and become a huge international scene. The film is due to launch in the UK in October 2014 and there will be considerable mainstream media coverage following the recent TV coverage via The One Show on BBC1 and the Culture Show on BBC2.

The soundtrack package for “Northern Soul” consists of CD1: the soundtrack itself containing all the key Northern Soul tracks from the film, CD2: an additional CD of specially chosen Northern Soul tracks compiled by “Northern Soul” director Elaine Constantine and an exclusive DVD with Elaine Constantine being interviewed about the making of the film by actor James Lance who plays top Northern Soul DJ Ray Henderson in the film. Plus there will also be some nice extras on the DVD including an early Richard Searling interview with Elaine Constantine and some other extras!

This beautifully packaged 2CD/DVD package will also come with a 24 page booklet specially written by Gareth Sweeney — co-author of the bestselling accompanying book “Northern Soul”.

This will be Harmless’ key release throughout 2014 and early demand and interest are already indicating that this will be a ‘must-have’ purchase for anyone who is interested in British musical culture, U.S. soul music and no doubt everyone who will see the film.

  4. The CoB set is £19.99 on Amazon. For 9 CD's worth. Having bought the H-D-H box, I wasn't sure I would need this but at that price? Pre-ordered!

That price is nuts. Gotta be worth it just to have 'em on the shelves I'd have thought......

"I'm on my way to a better place" top, top, tune my friend who passed away a few years ago had this played at his funeral (not a dry eye inthe place) got request's to play it for about 2yrs after in that area!!!

I played on the show when General Johnson passed away. Not a dry eye there either. Probably one of the best funeral songs ever.....

  6. Nearly there Frank....the word "could" should be replaced by 'isn't'!!!!

What next Joey Dee and The Starlighters compilation, Gary Lewis and The Playboys tunes for American teens of the early '60's, a Foundations or Hot Chocolate anthology???

Actually these aren't mine Scal. I'm posting 'em up for a colleague. And I'd do a Foundations anthology in a second! Although this one does the trick at the moment:-

  7. These acts released a lot of stuff, but have they done anything for the deeper 'musicologist' (person with good taste).

Only awb track I can remember liking is 'stop the rain' back in the acid jazz days, and even then, Lena Conquest made a better track out of it.

similarly, I only remember liking one cotb track a bit - 'when will she tell me she needs me'

Oh, I don't know about that. I'm pretty partial to the Average White Band. So many 70's classics to their name and some wonderful stuff - "Queen Of My Soul", "A Love Of Your Own", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Atlantic Avenue" are all great records to me. Very popular in the U.S. but they hardly had any hits over here. In fact, I'm looking forward to listening through their stuff again. Managed to blag one, so I'll report back in a few months when I've digested it all. I also like Chairmen Of The Board for mainly nostalgic reasons - "Everything's Tuesday" and "I'm On My Way To A Better Place" especially.

But I should point out that I'm posting these up for a colleague who asked me nicely if I could post 'em up. I had nought to do with these personally.

Average White Band - All The Pieces — The Complete Studio Recordings 1971-2003

    3DPackshotAverageWhiteBand.jpghttps://www.amazon.co.uk/All-Pieces-Complete-Recordings-1973-2003/dp/B00KJJSFU4/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1403703126&sr=1-1&keywords=average+white+band

Average White Band are widely and rightly regarded as one of the best ever soul and funk bands.

Although probably best known for their global hit, the US #1 single ‘Pick Up The Pieces’, this extensive anthology delves back into their musical history, from the early sessions in 1971, right up to the most recent studio album released this millennium.

‘All The Pieces…’ features the band’s entire catalogue of recorded material on a 19CD box set, which includes all of the original studio albums (and ‘spoilers’ ‘Put It Where You Want It’ and ‘Volume VIII’) in mini-vinyl replica wallets, alternate versions and selected mixes, in this 172-track collection.

The box set includes the collectable re-packaged debut album ‘Show Your Hand’ — ‘Put It Where You Want It’ — whilst ‘Person To Person’ is packaged as a 2 disc gatefold wallet — to reflect the original 2LP set, ‘Feel No Fret’ is packaged as a gatefold release.

The bonus CDs wallet artwork has been created by the legendary John Pasche.

AWB’s repertoire has been a source of inspiration for many R&B acts, who have sampled their material and who cite AWB’s grooves as a major influence.

The 52-page booklet includes an 11,000+ word liner note by US musicologist, Justin M. Kantor and includes recent historical recollections undertaken with Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart.

Chairmen of the Board - The Complete Invictus Studio Recordings 1969-1978

    COTBOX01-ChairmenOfTheBoard3Dpackshot.jphttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Invictus-Recordings-1969-1978/dp/B00JYDGJG8/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1403703264&sr=1-3&keywords=chairman+of+the+board

Motown’s legendary songwriting/production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland, left the fold in 1967, to establish their own Invictus/Hot Wax group of labels.

They had worldwide hits with their flagship act, Chairmen Of The Board, debuted the first album by Parliament, as well as scoring a UK #1 with Freda Payne’s ‘Band of Gold.

Chairmen Of The Board were unusual at the time, with all the group members being featured vocalists in its line-up.

This 9CD, 97-track anthology includes Chairmen Of The Board’s four studio albums for Invictus, as well as the Invictus solo albums released by General Johnson, Danny Woods and Harrison Kennedy.

The two bonus discs include alternate versions, non-album singles and selected mixes, including two Tom Moulton remixes of their two biggest UK hits ‘Give Me Just A Little More Time’ and ‘(You’ve Got Me) Dangling On A String’, which were first released in 2014.

The 36-page booklet includes a 6,500+ word liner note by Dean Rudland.

  9. It's covered in another thread, but Dusty Wilson did not sing on this record. The artist's name was Dusty Williams, and Gino had gotten it mixed up with Wilson for a number of years. There's also a video on youtube that was recently posted with Gino and Dusty signing copies of the record.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfUKdGT3Mtg

Btw, is that discography linked above actually correct? The "Jumping" Gino Washington record looks and sounds way earlier than anything else on the label.

LOL, nothing like a hard-sell. Did anyone buy a signed copy and, if so, what was it? A re-press of some type presumably?

    Ian D  :D

  10. Recorded and released in 1968 according to Gino Washington the label owner.

Claude Williams aka Dusty Wilson sang lead.

OK, that seems a good bet. Cheers Kev - I wanna get the (P) date right on the label copy as it's on the Northern Soul film soundtrack.

Coincidentally, I got my original copy off you way back in '75 I think, but who did you get it off I wonder......? There were only 2 or 3 at that point I think.......

    Ian D  :D

  11. I am happy to deliver it, I would even buy one to give to her if you arrange the meet! Would be nice to say how much one of my heroes means to me when they are still alive!

Okay I have now just bought it, should sit nicely with my Wilson Picket box set finally bought and about 8 Kent CD's just waiting on the holiday to listen them to.

It really is a great time for retrospective music output!

OK Jocko. Good thinking! You book the flights and we'll go together and get it on film! I'll supply the box set. How does that sound?

    Ian D  :D

  12. i was under the impression that the 1st cd was Wigan based soundtrack and the 2nd CD was more towards influential and important tracks since Wigan.

    I could be wrong though

No, you're correct Andy. I stopped going to the Casino in '76, so I missed a lot of stuff that was played between then and when it closed. Did someone have an acetate of Marvin Gaye back then I wonder....?

Rare is the most over used word on this scene - often used to describe records that are temporarily in demand, but which also exist in quantity.

Mel Britt - wasn't it legally re-presed in the late 70s, with a wider ZTSC stamper?

The one with the white-rim around the label presumably?

    Ian D  :D

  14. Did all the records listed on the soundtrack actually get played at Wigan? Or am i missing something? (if it's not restricted to just Wigan tracks then cool, this isn't me having a dig, just wanting to get it straight in my grey matter).

  15. Wilton Felder played bass on " I want you back"

I was pleasantly surprised on hearing that bit of info

I didn't know that either. That's some bass-line but I never knew the Crusaders were playing on Motown sessions that early. You learn something everyday....

    Ian D :)

  16. Pretty good for prime-time Sunday night on ITV. At least they're interviewing plenty of the original people - there's quite a few I haven't seen interviewed before. Beats the sh*t out of Big Brother that's for sure........

  17. Ian

thanks for agreeing with me...i got into northern in the 8ts by a strange quirk of fate (will tell if interested). My memory is getting bad but were you not involved in compilations back in the day if so you must remember Lorraine trent and steve ripley cbs/columbia ..sony

Yes, I knew Lorraine and Steve from the CBS days in the 80s. I haven't seen Lorraine for a while but Steve is an independent promotion guy these days and does a lot of work with contemporary black music acts. I'm still involved in compilations for Harmless records, a division of Demon Music Group which is now part of BBC Worldwide. Have we met?

  18. Well, I would say that I only came across a few Brit Soul record hunters in USA before 1977, but from 1977-1984 there were very many.  Those I saw most were Nev Wherry, Bob "Larry" Wagner, Rod Shard, Dave Withers, Dave Raistrick, and Martin Koppel regularly raided my favourite place to find records (Detroit).  John Anderson took away loads of great records from our Chicago warehouses.  And, I had heard from the owners of many of my regular shops and warehouses that "I sold out the lot to a British guy", or some British guys came in here for 3 days and bought hundreds.  After 1984, I was mainly in Europe, and didn't look for records in USA at all.  But the US collectors I knew still DID have that attitude towards what The British in The NS were doing to the chances of our hard core Soul collectors (including many Black Soul fans) finding any decent non-hit Soul records with at least one fast or fast mid-tempo side.  Luckily, at that time, The Soulies were still not interested in slower mid-tempos and "beat ballads".  Now, they like just about all Soul.  So, they are competing with us regular general Soul fans for EVERYTHING.

    But what about the Japanese?

I was over there in 1976 and tended to compete with those pesky Japanese diggers who seemed to be hitting the same places as me but taking everything! There's been a few occasions when I've walked in a shop, seen a Japanese guy with a big stack of interesting looking records and thought 'forget it'. I once had a tug of war with a Japanese guy over a Little Charles on Botanic at a great shop in Madison, Wisconsin. Ridiculous. I used to hate having to get up @ 4.00am for record fairs simply to be there at the same time as the Japanese guys with the the U-Haul trucks 'cos they would just buy everything and load it. That's why Dave Flynn consistently turns up good stuff in Japan. There's TONS of it over there believe me.

So it wasn't just us Northern Soulers that were raping and pillaging your records Robb!
