Gene Woodbury
Ever Again / That's Not Half Bad
Del-Val: DV 1005 (45s)
Philadelphia William Lucas & Jos Stevenson project that they also gave Bernie Williams a shot at recording. Bernie's version that came out on Bell is of course something of a legendary Northern Soul classic, very rare today as msany of them have deteriorated over time from the rigors of the inconsistent Northern Soul club sound equipment. A Bernie Williams in today's market that has not been ran through the Northern Soul mill of worn stylus and wrongly weighted arms asnd cartridges.. is a rare thing indeed.. as the Bell styrene in most cases has now had it's sound quality degraded..
So step forward the not as rare but equally as good, sturdy Del-Val VINYL press by Gene Woodbury. This copy I can assure you has never even met a Northern Soul DJ in it's life so far.. and even if it had, the high quality vinyl press would not have suffered like the vulnerable styrene the Bell press was coined in..
"Ever Again" is again triggering those coordinated hand-claps that elevate the atmosphere when ever set into motion. "Ever Again" is one of the very best "Hand-clap" NS dancers in history..
Here is a fabulous copy - in virginal condition - that would love to encounter an enthusiastic NS DJ and the atmosphere, records of this calibre ignite..
It'll be tough to find a copy either styrene or vinyl that in 2017 has spent it's life filed away..
PS do not overlook the flipside - an enhance remix of Gene earlier Del-Val recording -Condition Report

Up And Down The Ladder / United
London : HL 10069 DJ (45s)
The beauty of the British Soul Demo, never ceases to send ripples of delight through my mind. Whether it be the simplicity of the EMI Red & White or the richly enticing yellow London Demo, a colour Decca wisely chose to capture the radio DJ or reviewers attention. It works, as it's captivated British 45 collectors for over 50 years now.
This listing is the perfect example of the pioneering club DJ's playing the b-sides, a MOD trait of one-upmanship, so important to drop into casual conversation "I Prefer The B-side" went hand in hand with highly polished Brogues, faded jeans, six button jacket cuffs, and the right make of shirt..
This was of course a Twisted Wheel floor-destroyer, that met every criteria amphetamine had raise the dance-bar to. The a-side is a seamless Philly mid-tempo that would pleasure the Sunday chill-sessions of today.. but back in 1966 when the audience was full of pent up youthful energy, heighten by their weekend treat. "Up And Down The Ladder" was the perfect vehicle to "just let it all go". Perfect Northern Soul Soul driven by those take for granted Intruder tight harmonies, hard drum whacks, jangling vibes, Leon Huff keyboard magic.. all added up to Wheel, Mojo., Nite Owl etc. dancefloor Heaven..
It of course sold nothing upon release, The Wheel DJ's loved that scenario as Decca was notorious for swift deletions, a rarity was born; like so many, to rise up as a British collectors trophy, even though the "silvertop" stock copy seems to be rare.. the Yellow Demo provides a handling experience like nothing else can.Condition Report
Lead side vinyl is Ex, has a light surface mark, a couple of tiny blemishes but nothing that affect the stylus, as you can hear both sides play loud, clean and true. Flipside vinyl is a grade better at MInt - . Lead label has the Decca running time stamp of 2 50 + a file # left hand side. "United" label is flawless (see scans)

Edward Hamilton
Baby Don't You Weep / Tell Me
Mary Jane: 1005 (45s)
An usually unblemished copy of this all-time Northern Soul favourite, that are invariably plagued with varying levels of h2o damage to the labels, here's an a lovely clean one. So important as it is one of Detroit's most eye-catching label vistas.
It's those guys again Fred Bridges & Robert Knight along with La Beat label captain Lou Beatty creating a spectacular example of mid-60's Detroit Northern Soul that ignored Motown's commercial stance for the City musical direction.. full of swirling string, rhythmic pattering from the bongos, the Arabians in the background pouring silky harmony into a cauldron of emotion... with the strings reaching a crescendo that would send Northern Soul crowds into ecstatic gyration. The vision from Cleethorpes Pier Stage, Wigan Casino Balcony or being hemmed in on the dancefloor when those strings & horns lift in unison was an unforgettable moment of euphoria...
The very reason you'd travelled 100's of miles to stay up all night, to feast on very special music, taking you to places in the mind that for hearing of "This Old Heart Of Mine" did as a schoolboy ... sending up on the never ending chase, for those adrenaline rush experiences, and there were many… surely this one was one of the most thrilling Soul escapes ever..
In all this "Bridges & Knight" brilliance, do not overlook the magnificent flipside.. also breathtakingly simplistic…vocal group excellence.

Those important checkered label are flaw free, just a mild age-tinge to the white areas. Note this is the slightly rarer NO Mike Terry credit. Vinyl a-side has some light wispy surface hairlines, NOT affecting play. THe B-side vinyl has the same appearance PLUS a light surface play-width scuff. BOTH sides play flawless, check out the soundfiles lifted from this 45... and melt!

Thee Midniters
You're Gonna Make Me Cry / Making Ends Meet
Whittier: 511 (45s)
L. A.'s Premier Chicano Soul Band with their most-wanted least seen Northern Soul dancer; a potent horn saturated blaster rippling with everything an exceptional All-niter sound demands. Gravel coated lead vocal, icy high-pitched vocal harmony response on the chorus peppered with a relentless army of brass. It's Northern Soul at it's most convincing, at it's most elusive and sadly not enough to go round to make the impact into mainstream notoriety.
Not enough DJ's at one time have ever owned knockout tune, if they had Thee Midniters rarest would have been a NS Monster long ago, with 10 different horrid bootlegs to it's credit.. as it is at the moment it has never been bootlegged, so now all it requires is an owner who DJ's regular and believes the real-deal style of Northern Soul should still dominate Rare play lists.
A killer! but do not overlook the flip, a gorgeous vocal group mid-tempo, a Low-Rider delight, as these highly regarded guys milk those poignant lyrics. "We Can't Make Ends Meet by leaving Love Out The Middle" with beautifully delivered regret.
Two great tunes, one very rare disc.Condition Report

James Bell & The Highlighters
Amazing Love / Poppin'Pop Corn
Rojam: 001 (45s)
For those serious about original "first presses"let us assure Soul collectors...this is a 100% first press of Paul Major's collaboration with talented local musician James Bell and friends. Spawning a fantastic double-sider offering a silky Northern Soul dancer on the lead side, with those adorable horns in a totally different mood on the eat-it-up FUNK side.
Top side is street level vocal-group class! The blending of those subtle horns, the delivery of a wicked sax, in contrast to James Bell's meandering approach to the lyrics is executed supremely. The Highlighters purring away in the background with a silky answering chorus, as that persistent sax still blowing away right until the very climax of the song.. is totally mesmerizing.
Flip it for FUNK! With James Bell's vocal taking a rest, we a treated to a Jazzy blending of the insistent saxophone who on this side really pushing the boundaries of the instrument. Then the burbling Hammond takes root, right into the depth of the tune; with what I would image a gang of impatient guys perched ready to show their "stuff". So, drummer come on in, sax-man step right back and blow-hard, keyboards drift away and allow the others to finish off the cellar-session on East 30th.
Tight cellar room FUNK with a silky harmony vocal Northern Soul groove on top.. ownership beckons.Condition Report

Towanda Barnes
You Don't Mean It / ( You Better ) Find Someone To Love
A&M: 1141 DJ (45s)
Is this the greatest vocal performance of the all on a Northern Soul classic?
Certainly a wake up call, that buries mediocrity in it's wake; authentic uncompromising Northern Soul from the thunderous throat of Towanda (Gloria) Barnes, as Johnny Brantley hands Towanda the microphone to show the Ohio Players what it possible when a woman has an scalding attitude running through her veins..
Driving Bongos are the perfect backdrop to this lady's domination of the lyrics, deliberate "Off-Key" horns add their own charm into this whirlpool boyfriend berating.. no matter how many times I hear it.. AWESOME is the first word that enters my head. But in all this NS glory have we overlooked a real gem languishing on the flipside..
The horns blast away, this time it's the guitar that given the "off Key" nod as Funk invades your space, and Towards strides out with even more attitude, overriding the power of the brass and again stealing the show with her Marva Whitney comparable excellence!
TWO GREAT SIDES with the flipside perched and ready to fly on whichever scene you play it on... it's a dance-floor hand-grenade..!!Condition Report

Blanch Carter
Halos Are For Angels / Halos Are For Angels
GSF: 6881 DJ (45s)
A listing for those many Northern Soul gatherers of RARE formats of the true Niter classics!
Before you today is the unmistakable and ultra rare Mono/Stereo vinyl press PROMO with anti-slip grips around the perimeter of the label. Pressed in high quality vinyl with a rich sound none of those styrene bootlegs can ever give you, also eradicating any doubts of authenticity.
Leaving the attributes of rarity and quality of pressing variations aside. This was a turntable choice that catapults you back to visions of those Northern Soul halcyon nights of yore. An all-nighter classic, especially popular with the NS girls of the mid-70's. Dripping with well-earned perspiration, the ladies multi-tasked their dancing incorporating show-stopping spins with well-timed hand-claps. That was a Northern Soul vision that still evokes euphoric recall for me today.
If you appreciate the easily identifiable Northern Soul Classics as White PROMO copies, this will be a standout addition to your run, as it's only comes to market on very rare occasions.Condition Report

Azie Mortimer
Lips / Wrapped Up In A Dream
London: HLX 9237 (45s)
Not only one of the very elusive UK London 45s, but also a slice of 60's New York, that "Big City Brill Building Sound" reputation was built on. The guttural depth of Azie is enhanced by a full orchestra of strings and chirping girl-group choruis..
This is not easy acquisition on the Big Top USA release but 10 times rarer as the 1960 UK release that completely got overlooked at the time, only to emerge years later as a Belgium "Popcorn" choice and ultimately like the majority of our European friends discoveries, they end up on the English turntables for our new appetite for the sulking "popcorn" mover..
Check out the soundfile, in fact check out everything Azie Mortimer has recorded, this gal had a voice to reckon with, most everything has impressive depth and delivery, on this Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller creation she really excels.
Very seldom surfaces for sale and this one is a beauty, virtually unblemished.Condition Report

Bella Delena / Out Of Limits
Warner Bros: WB 120 DJ (45s)
I remember well how Nev Wherry could take an "Off The Wall" track he liked, fit it seamlessly into a Northern Soul set and turn his choice into a a dancefloor favourite. This is perhaps his most unlikely Cleethorpes "Hit" as it went right against the grain of the "New" sound occupying turntable time in 1976.. The paradoxical tones Brass Construction's - Ha Cha Cha - could not have been further away from the dulcet rhythms of a Califormian 5 man Surf band, a flipside of their popular "Out Of Limits" a great instrumental in it's own right.. (listen) .. surely could be part of a vibrant Cleethorpes get together..
Howe wrong we were, the initial sn*****s evaporated when Nev filled the floor with "something completely Different" rather like a hardcore house crowd could enjoy a chill-out tent. THe Cleethorpes crowd lapped up Nev's fearkless choiice, it stick and even crept into DJ sets across the country.. "Balla Delana" stuck and can still be a surprise drop today, appreciated by those who followed Nev up during the late 70s..
Well here is a 1963 British DEMO with it's head turning label, original birth-sleeve and spanking clean, close to Mint minus vinyl.
To a British 45 Soul fan, this is an intriguing piece, to me it is also a tribute to one of the scenes most flamboyant of characters.Condition Report

Bobby Bland
How Does A Cheating Woman Feel / Don't Cry No More
Duke: 336 (45s)
Resolute Rare Soul Collectors, please go check that run of Duke 45's, perhaps one of the most important areas of your collection. We are thinking you may find #336 is missing. Due to scarely documented riff between Bobby Bland and Duke boss Don Robey (Deadric Malone) over the release. Sir Shambling (the world expert for me on Deep Soul), told a story of Don not liking this release one bit and only an alleged few left the building. Don even went to the lengths of putting an advert in Music Magazines, that someone had bootlegged his product and all distributors were asked return the 45 and all shops must not sell it..even though only a handful and been distributed.
Nobody seems to know exactly why Don Robey was so determined this release was taken out of circulation and went to grea lengths to ensure it was. Some opinions think it may have been a short-term private dispute between Bobby "Blue" and himself. Some have even suggested the title "How Does A Cheating Woman Feel" too close to events at the time (for someone) but we don't know who. No matter what the reason, this 45 is certainly no bootleg and today stands proud an Bobby Bland's rarest 45 in his extensive DUKE catalog. And two truly superb examples of Bobby's early 60's recordings..
This 1961 withdrawn 45 is utterly flawless - a record for those of you serious about label runs, iconic artists, and the history surrounding themCondition Report

There one of these on Discogs at present, the guy wants around £345 if I remember, which for a West Coast Wd is a really good price. The only boot of this is a green label Styrene thingy which shows the label design from the vinyl orig issue. I think this pressing came out in the 70's
Probably will keep it for now........unless another big want comes over the horizon....

Here goes with the first results on the new JM site! Not sure why some of the pic's are missing.
Homer Banks
Sweetie Pie / Lady Of Stone
Genie Records: 46313 (45s)
As a raw youngster just left school, I was fascinated by Homer Banks; Collecting all his British release 45's, particularly treasuring his Twisted Wheel anthems on UK Liberty. 60 Minutes Of Your Love, A Lotta Love, Hooked By Love all life-changes for me, and stepping stones to the fertile vinyl-pastures of the USA to look for more Soul previous unknown to me..
It was not until the mid-70's when I established myself as a full time record dealer I started to receive those wonderfully informative "wants List" from Japan, Belgium etc. that opened my eyes to the realization I hadn't even scratched the surface of the Rare Soul Vinyl that was out there to be discovered. One Japanese listing had Homer Banks "Lady Of Stone" on Genie, a major Deep Soul want for those dedicated guys, it was used as the flipside on his Minit 32020 single with the great "Hooked by Love" heading up the a-side. So I had absolutely no idea the "Sweetie Pie" was granite status Northern Soul, and it was gonna be several years longer before I found out, rarity is the only reason that this 45 never graced the turntables of the destination Soul Clubs of the 70s.
So click the soundfile of a truly magnificent slab of Memphis Northern Soul, and unleash what we were deprived of during those long Saturday nights in Wigan or Cleethorpes... this would have certainly been a Monster, saturated in every element, to induce a spontaneous backdrop, an adventurous sweat-sprinkling spin or those timely hand-claps that resounded around those sardine-packed assemblies..
Homer was always a favourite with me, but my first copy of this seldom seen 45 elevated him to demigod status... even though it was long after my juvenile DJ career had stuttered to a halt..Condition Report
A chance to own a Memphis Rarity is truly sublime condition. Both labels are a rich deep full red (a colour notorious for age-fade) Both vinyls are close to Manship-Mint. It don't get no better than this, when you meet up with an old friend after so long apart.

Clarence Samuels
Charlie Loan Me 50c / Crying Because I'm Troubled
Sharon: 112 (45s)
World renown Brooklyn Rare Soul DJ Micheal Robinson's lusted after cover-up, from his own neighborhood and it's SO RARE!
Pumping R&B floor-destroyer from an uncompromising doyen of the sound, strutting like the master of the fearsome R&B growl that he is. Suitably backed by a cocktail of horns, bluesy guitar riffs, squealing girls and approving male teammates... Clarence strolls through his self-penned lyrics becoming more demanding as he begs for 1/2 a dollar, to help pay his rent.. his plight never reaching a conclusion, and do we believe that's what the 50 cents is for, Mr. Samuels paints a picture Brooklyn neighborhood life, embedded into a convincing R&B dance arrangement.
Flip it over, and Clarence plies his skilled interpretation of 60's Blues.. he pours out despair and misery by the gallon..

Gene Chandler
Mr. Big Shot / I Hate To Be The One To Say
Constellation: 172 (45s)
I've always been a sucker for labels, especially the variations you least see, the particularly attractive ones, the eye-catching conversation-pieces that outside the norm.
Chicago's Constellation label is a series littered with different label designs, some stand out way above the others. This Los Angeles conceived, white curved logo, with the "sky" full of stars and the silver text for the artist and title credits gleaming below; I consider the prettiest of them all, ironically also the rarest variation. So when it's the vehicle for one of the label's best-loved recordings. A Northern Soul juggernaut of immense magnitude, that label becomes even more desirable..
Washington meets Chicago, with "Shrine" pupils Keni Lewis & Carl Kidd writing inspirational lyrics, which Sonny Sanders decorates with honkin' horns, Mike Terry-esque Baritone burps, vibes, split in two by an insane saxophone attack. This is KITCHEN SINK Northern Soul cram-packed with all the instruments we adore, peppered with a qualified lead vocal, considerate male harmony chorus.. proper stomper to remind us what Northern Soul really is.. exciting, motivational, escapism into an unparalleled world of music. So we could easily not both to mention the flipside, couldn't we...
Except for the fact, it's simplistic "Eddie Foster" styled intro takes you by the hand to lead through a Northern Soul dancer that is in it's own right, utterly brilliant, I can only describe it as Gene Chandler's second best Northern Soul offering, after "Big Shot"
Gene Chandler's two finest NS recordings both conjured up by Carl Kidd & Keni Lewis and saturated in "Shrine" qualities, offered here on a rarely witnessed West Coast press..
What's not to love.. ?Condition Report

Dynamics
Woman / Because I Love You
Brainstorm: 259399 (45s)
I think blindfolded every seasoned Soul collector, would declare this recording was from the streets "Chicago" is drips with the very essence of the city, but has sat on the back-burner of Northern Soul prominence for decades now. But the growth of the "Rare and under-played" "Sunday Soul Chill-outs" have ultimately raised awareness in this "sleeper" once again.. surprising has it has all the credentials to grace a top-jocks set, turn heads and fire a dancefloor.
Both sides shimmer with raw street-corner charm, after many spins I've decided to lead with "Woman" and it's mosaic of "buddy" vocals that pull you into that dark area of appreciation for under-touched D.I.Y. production. It has everything those big-ticket NS Chicagoan's command and more. Why this has bubbled away on the back-burner for decades is quite baffling... check out the brilliant simplicity of the pitch and counter-pitched vocalCondition Report
Both labels althgough free of any flaws, no stains, no writing, no tears, they reveal very light surface rub (see scans of these two Pop-art street designs ) Vinyl few light surface marks on the a-side, flipside vinyl has two surface turntable retrieve marks from a user fingernasil, these are light and in no way effect the stylus. Just a visual flaw, as you can hear both sides play clean & true.

Ruby Sherry
Feminine Ingenuity / Please Don't Go
Take 6: 1002 (45s)
A most popular Los Angeles double girl delight, an elusive 45 to secure, as universal demand always frustrates the chase.
The topside drumroll intro sets the pace for this NS classic that always lifts the room, as Ruby's saccharine voice cuts the air, the percussion and horns cradle her irresistible presence. "Feminine Ingenuity" must refer to her alluring power to seduce.. Northern Soul seduction is what it is.. it shouldn't be allowed; the beauty of the disc is enough but when a singers voice makes your loins quiver..that is so out order..
The equally impressive flipside offers a sultry mid-tempo NS stroller with Ruby in a softer but equally sexy-mood, projecting her voice as a beguiling "Stay With Me" tone fills the air. With her girlfriends heightening the atmosphere with shrill response, this is another flirtatious offering . A top-drawer example of girl persuasion at work, currently crossing over to those "Sunday Chill sessions" for the more discerning ears, feet and libido ..
Having said all that you's at least expect a filthy label, a bit of dirt on the vinyl, but no this disc, is squeaky clean... nothing like suggestive lady who's impeccably dressed!Condition Report

Bobby O'Brown
Searching For My Baby / I Can Feel My Love Growing
Single B: 111 (45s)
Rattling bongos open up this desperate search for Bobby Brown's baby, aided by an insistent team of male vocals chanting their willingness to locate his lost love.
Creating an utterly compelling Detroit-delight with those addictive rhythms so right for today's dancefloor. Gravelly vocal, journeying through funky riffs, punctuated by backing chorus chants, give this dancer a real attention grabbing cutting edge. The style that scythes through all that the night has so far given up to dance to... one of those records that you unwittingly take home in your head. Then chase around YouTube for a closer listen..
But this is no one-trick-left-winger, flip it over for "Low-Rider" excellence in it's rawest form as the pace falls to it's knees on the blanket of harmony. Again Bobby's tortured vocal takes center-stage as he unashamedly spills out every ounce of his despair when he discovers his girl has been untrue. which only makes his love stronger; the uncredited backing boys reach the top of their game, as seamless harmony swells from a trickle to a flood as there sympathies grow.
Two enormous tunes, yet to receive the consistent DJ attention they cry out for, perfect for today's dance-floor, with the flip threatening to take venues like "Diggin' Deeper" by the throat and gently squeeze a few tears from the eyes of grown men.Condition Report

Lynne Randell
Stranger In My Arms / Ciao Baby
CBS Australia: CBS BA 221387 (45s)
Northern Soul Myths…
this timeless New York recorded, whilst taking a day off from her 1967 tour of the US with The Monkees, and going under the wing of the great Herb Bernstien (a man guaranteed to give a production his full attention). This Northern Soul classic has more than it’s fair share of “Fake News” none more than being the misconception that this 1967 Australian is it’s rarest form, far from it once we consult our precise 20 year sales data on this timeless slab of Northern Soul that first came to the fore as it’s rare British press , so we thought we would lift the fog surrounding the with a JM table of it sales history
Australian 45 – 12 copies
USA 45 stock – 4 copies with picture cover (it's first release)
USA 45 Promo – 14 copies with or without Picture Cover
British 45 DEMO – 2 copies
British 45 release copy – ZERO
So far from being the rarest, it is close to being the commonest of its various formats.
But what is RARE is this 45’s unsurpassed condition, flawless “like new” mint minus vinyl, utterly unblemished labels, still sleeping in the elusive Oz polythene CBS birth-sleeve.
This is one for those of you seeking perfection whilst hunting down the timeless Northern Soul classics. Not forgetting the enviable durability of Australian vinyl as opposed to the frailties o Columbia pressed styrene..
To think Lynne Randell is Australian, or her Australian 45 is it’s rarest form is to “myth” the point that this is surely the greatest Northern Soul 45 ever recorded by a scouser.
To consider this killer tune an Australia recording and it's the rarest format and to christen Lynne is Australian by birth is to "myth" the point completely..Condition Report

Alfie Davison
Love Is Serious Business / Knock On Any Door
Mercury: 76001 (45s)
Have you grown tired of hearing this Northern Soul anthem yet.. no? Neither have I, like intelligent, witty conversation, it is drenched in that unknown quality of the unexpected that you just don't get tired of hearing.
As Bruce Kapler, Alfie Davison & Norman Bergen shun all the crass Disco cliches that surrounded then in 1979, embarking on a slick blend of subtlety and craft. As the trio slowly lift the recording with sweetly caressed horns, swirling strings, sweeping girl choruses, and a skilled sax-break tat right up there with the very best.. and with all this going on Mr. Davison resists the temptation of letting his voice hit "Michael Bolton" pitches that would surely have destroy the whole glorios ease of the moment..
Every component fits so perfectly into place, providing the dancer with a Northern Soul feelgood 3:30 minutes of mood changing 70's dance. So many bad choices in the production could have been made, but thankfully were rejecting; making for a 70's masterpiece we have yet to tire of..Condition Report

I held it for 11 years before selling to Tim Brown for 5k.
Kev, what condition was it in back then? I'm sure I've seen someone say it was warped or something.

I always have a smile whenever I see a copy of the Millionaires. I bought mine in the queue waiting to go into Wigan. After we had looked through the lad's records, he opened up his leather trench coat to ask if we wanted to buy a hairdryer that he had stuffed in there! Bizarre times and not much need for a hairdryer these days.

You Don't Mean / Don't Pity Me
Current Northern Soul DJ support to this New Orleans stomper has sent demand into orbit, as new even stronger than before lease of life takes hold..
Classic style Northern Soul driven by Allen Toussaint’s rattling piano, enriched by vocal-group purrings, bouncing along in even greater intoxicating joy than those Lee Dorsey sessions that brought Allen Toussaint / Marshall Seahorn their worldwide success. Their New Orleans character on this occassion is pushed out of the envelope, into it’s 60’s dance limits..
A dancefloor inflamer, infectious in the extreme dripping with all the qualities to set the night alight.. so no wonder then this 45 has come back with a second wind to knock us out yet another time… Top Jocks like John Vincent bring it back into the public eye..
Leaving me wondering why this slab of NS addiction wasn’t a huge tune in the 70’s.. did will all miss it? or were we to busy to notice? with all the different styles of disco, funk, pop contaminated our minds during that period..
This is pure distilled Northern Soul .. the type that lasts forever in the mind!
JUST LOVE IT!!

The winning bid was £ 476.00Four Reputation
Call On Me / Sorry
1966 first label before they withdrawn, revamped and repressed so to rectify the error of the reversed labels…but not before the back office at Millage records, took a marker to the labels and the re-titling of the labels began.
Before you today is a rare example of a CLEAN copy that escape before the mistake was noticed. NO WRITING ON LABEL. Labels are reversed but they are totally free of writing adjustments. Now that is a rare thing to find.
The guys at Carlton House Hotel, Philadelphia in 1968 revamped the 45 and AMERICAN MUSIC MAKER took up the task of getting back on the market, this great Bobby Martin created was just too good to pass over.
Calling the group The Presentations it was issued on # 0011, did a small bit of business but this release is also no easy disc to find.
Top side is of course, just killer Northern Soul, flip it over for a fusion tortured Deep Soul smoothed with a delicate crochet of male harmonies..
Two standout tunes! In it’s rarest form, unsullied by the marker pen most all of this rarity suffer from.. check those glorious labels, then immerse yourself in the remarkable soundfile.

Breakaway
Perfection awaits the Northern Soul classic collector who snags this Wigan Casino / Cleethorpes Pier anthem. As it is such an impeccable copy. It’s not Christmas, otherwise it would be at the head of our “Manship Mints For Xmas” campaign.
Archetypal Casino / Pier from those long Saturday nights in the 70’s when nobody was quite sure who Toni Basil actually was?
She was an aspiring 23 year old dancer, who was performing on the Los Angeles based TV music show “Shindig”. Then Herb Alpert & Jerry Moss gave her a one shot 45 chance with the “Tainted Love” partnership of Ed Cobb & Lincoln Mayorga. Who in character forged a thumpin’ Northern Soul dancer that took England’s Soul all-niters by a storm..
If you’re one of the many assembling an enviable run of the Northern Soul classic WHITE PROMO’s.. you will never unearth a more magnificent example than this.. MANSHIP MINT… that catapults you back to those idyllic Saturday nights..

The winning bid was £ 375.00Charles Johnson
Never Had A Love So Good / Baby I Cried, Cried, Cried
in 1980 our mailing list had a section of new releases, this Miami mesmerizer featured in on one list only, 25 copies £1.30 each.. they flew out the door in 2 days.. so we ordered some more.. but received not a single copy. Alston had they’re initial small run, sold them a across the globe and ha no intention of pressing any more as the a-side “Baby I Cried, Cried, Cried” received no recognition from the radio stations in the USA..
It didn’t take long for Northern Soul attention to take hold and he rest is history. Those who missed it as a new release lived in regret, as did the dealer who ordered too few copies.. as this 45 disappeared without trace, with the years rolling by, the value was this beautiful 45 just escalated, leaving us all kicking ourselves.
The only copies I ever found after 1980 in the USA were PROMO copies, as good as the Deep Soul treasure Alston led with, is. The promo does not have “Never Had A Love So Good” on the flipside..
How frustrating to watch this 45 become more and more wanted over the decades.. for those who missed the boat in 1980 , here’s a copy in “time machine” condition, just like it was when Andy “Bustin’ Mindsweeper” Cox mailed those first Charles Johnson’s out from our little Office in Nottingham Street, Melton Mowbray..

The winning bid was £ 411.00Ray Pollard
It's A Sad Thing / All The Things You Are
As hard as I try, I cannot find a blemish worth a mention of this 1966 British born Beat Ballad jewel.
The Big City Sound brought to you by one of it’s most-respected exponents.. a man who lifts every arrangement once his vocal takes flight..
So typically New York, a monumental blending of of Bass Guitar rhythm, Blaring Brass, searing strings, and the compulsory coven of shrill girls in chorus.
But this is so much more than a Beat-Ballad as Arnold Goland & Gerry Granahan turn to tap on, forcing the pace upwards into a Latin infused Northern Soul dancer.. whilst “The Drifter” will stir your emotions, “Sad Thing” stealthily stirs you feet..
Do not pass by - a Ray Pollard in impeccable condition, is just like the artist.. not a thing you encounter very often…

The winning bid was £ 155.00Paul Anka
When We Get There
A sumptuous Black stock copy of this polarizing Northern Soul dancefloor congestion causer.
Without fail Don Costa’s New York creation ignites euphoric-recall at all the Big Hall events, transporting the NS time-served congregation back to those halcyon days of the Northern Soul when all the All-niters hummed to the feelgood tones of Paul Anka.
Some love it, some loath it, but most all, forget Paul Anka was no ordinary vocalist, he was so exceptional… Rick Hall paired him with the magical voice of Oadia Coates inviting the duo to record at the fabled Muscle Shoals Fame studios where the tow of them gelled into a pool of soulful excellence..
It is no mistake that Don Costa produce him on this recording, Don had a gift for making the exceptional “white guys” sound Soulful, as did Rick Hall.
Yes Paul Anka is not considered a Soul singer by collectors, but by some producers Artie Schroeck, Garry Sherman, Don Costa, Jet Loring, Rick Hall felt enough in his voice to lay tracks down with him, that equally woulds have perfectly fitted a “black” vocal”
Let the debate begin, meanwhile that beautiful BLACK STOCKER is singing to your collectable instincts..
Condition is beautiful by the way, just a couple of brief hairlines, otherwise flawless!

The winning bid was £ 146.00Strangeloves
Night Time
1964 the year Peter Sellers starred in Stanley Kubrick’s wonderful comedy movie, satire about loving “The Bomb”! Well, you gotta love this “Bomb” from “Strangelove’s” and you may well require a “Doctor” after experiencing the dance floor reaction it is currently igniting.
The persistent endorsement of this uncompromising MOD stomper from Shaun Chapman, has at long last triggered an explosive happening now hot on the heels of that monster recording “Line and Track”. “Night Time” is the next in line, as the “Garage” record of the moment, to take the Northern Soul scene by the scruff-of-the-neck and shake it to it’s foundations..
Potent in the extreme, relentless, uncompromising and so very effective for the Northern Soul dance requirements… currently being played from the not so rare, USA press on Bang Records.
But here is the 1965 British incarnation, not so easy to acquire; in this Mint minus pristine condition, even harder, in fact anything over 50 years old on a British release, to be unused is a rare event, full stop!
Jerry Goldstein, Richard Gottehrer, Bob Feldman are a trio widely appreciated by the Northern Soul scene for their string of writing credits for some of NS’s most favoured songs.. but they also knew how to bring excitement to the recording studio, as artists not just a writer/producer trio.
Jerry Goldstein, Richard Gottehrer, Bob Feldman collectively in 1964 went under the “Kubrick?” inspired name The Strangeloves recording some homegrown killer tunes. Notably “Cara-lin” “I Want Candy” becoming popular all-time MOD Hipshakers, “Night Time” now bridging the twin-scenes for huge Northern Soul action..
Whilst every other DJ most probably owns the USA Bang 45, here’s a chance to turn heads when the turntable-cam picks up a pristine UK London spinning round… without that annoying inherent surface pimple the Bang pressings have, that emmit a click every time the stylus glides over the USAflaw..
You will not see a finer example of this UK rarity than this listing…perfect sound, perfect label, pristine playing surface NO PIMPLE!

The winning bid was £ 195.00Aaron
I'm In Love With Someone New
Aaron McCarthy with rare 80’s Georgia Soul groove, a D.I.Y. project out of Red Oak, Ga. A classy Boogie stepper dominated by a searing saxophone and Aaron’s positive vocal style, softened by cutting girl choruses.
Although personally I don’t consider the 80s or the 90s Soul’s finest decade, but very occasionally I encounter a standout production that makes you halt what your doing for a closer listen. BOTH sides did claim my complete attention, as insistent vocal seeping from a liquid arrangement with so many ear grabbing moments..
This a slab of CLASS! From this Travis Briggs & Aaron McCarthy collaboration, each side giving up qualities for the more discerning event. Top side is cutting-edge 80’s dance-groove, the flip is a chill-out dreamy saturated in unwind characteristics..
80’s Soul at it’s most captivating… this copy is immaculate.

The winning bid was £ 561.00Little Reuben
In The Name Of Loneliness
Soulful Dance does not get any more convincing than this masterpiece..
It is rare to encounter a song that invades your very being from the tips of your toes to the top of your head, stiffening hair follicles on it’s journey before settling right in your heart..
Only the very special Soul moments that capture antithetic despair in motion. Whether an artist is such a skilled interpreter of pain or Little Reuben has just found himself truly alone is not clear, but his palpable anguish manifests itself on every word, as his voice quivers and cracks as lays down the lyrics with tortured oscillation…
Rare Soul Dance a contradiction in terms maybe, but Little Reuben inflicts the sweetest pain you feel compelled to move to…
This is the very embodiment of RARE UNDILUTED SOUL that just makes you wanna DANCE… !

Never For Me
One of the biggest Northern Soul revival spins of the moment..
Here is the elusive first British press, not the horrid later 70s silver inkjet release, pressed in Phonogram’s inferior, easy-crack, harsh fidelity plastic the company sadly started to use in te 70’s. This is the paper label, “warm” vinyl first edition.
Housed in birth-sleeve, fine clean condition, both labels unblemished, vinyl surface is near Mint minus.
So click the soundfile to hear what is jamming up those dancefloor’s of Britain at this moment in time - a current MONSTER..

The winning bid was £ 167.00Dorothy Morrison
I Can't Go On Without You Part 1 & 2
A Bay Area delicacy from the desk of Marvin Holmes, utilizing the Gospel-honed vocal of Edwin Hawkin Singers member Dorothy Morrison, who’s controlled booming vocal is woven into a classy dance arrangement.
Marvin Holmes’s long term studio partner Danny Armstrong again decorates a standout vocal with a compelling fusion of Jazz/Soul/Gospel, molded into a superior 70’s dance recording…
Brown Door studios gave up such a wealth of great Soul music, it’s output of quality assured recordings is unparalleled in the Bay Area, in Soul collectors eyes it has elevating itself into a “try and own the entire label run”…status..
With voices like Dorothy Morrison, Jeanne Tracy on your catalog, talented musicians seamlessly entwining Soul into Jazz arrangements the result is quite stunning, as all their sessions have that “never grow tire of” quality…
This Dorothy Morrison I’ve never grown tired of it’s company…
This copy is immaculate, btw

Title:I'm Gonna Love You A Long, Long Time
Label:Kapp 897
Condition: VG++
Ultra-rare black issue copy is one of the rarest issue copies around with only 3 or 4 known to be in collectors’ hands. If someone could tell me the top deejay that has one of these I’d like to know his or her name. In an age of multi-thousand pound Northern Soul records, this puts many much more expensive records to shame.
Reserve Price: £1,000.00
Current Bid: £31,200.00
i know the issue is rare, and oldies are king! but i dont think i will try and out bid this one..haha
Good spot !! Someone with either fat wallet or fat fingers!
Website looks like it's been adjusted now to £1,200.

I like to see playlists. Always interesting.
I'm not sue that "Big Name" DJ's would do it. I think it's a good way for people who are not DJing every week to advertise their style and collection. Phil T used to list loads of records played at Grumpy Soul and I'm sure that spread the word and reputation.
Also, I understand the point of view "if you want to know, GO!". BUT, I've wasted lot's of nights in the past finding out that a venue isn't to my taste. Now, I would tend to look at the DJ's to get an idea of quality/style/ovo etc. However, as mentioned, that knowledge cost a lot of time and disappointing nights.

Better Use Your Head
To message to all the “Oldschool gratediggers” of Britain YOU KNOW THEFEELING
To find this timeless Northern Soul anthem in it’s 1966 British form, in spectacular flawless condition is not only a rare event, it is also a happening that opens the floodgates of euphoric recall, of how myself and thousands of other hopefuls spent their spare time exploring every possible 45 oasis they could locate, no matter which town you found yourself in.
From every small town coast to coast in the 60’s and early 70s there were troops of teenage Soul fans bulldozering their way into every corner of junk, running to market stall to get there first, chatting up bubblegum chewing girl Record shop assistants to see if there was any chance.. to look in the store room..
Local rivalries sprung up, dick waving (not at shop assistants) but at your friends if you secured something good whilst he laid in bed late on a Saturday morning…. Trevor Hurd
What a great time of your life, the buzz of a finding a want was utterly addictive. I once dreamed of finding a Lou Johnson - Unsatisfied - London, the very next day i did.. the thrill was immense..
But even back in the day when these 45’s were less than 5 years old, finding them whilst on safari was damn hard, you dug through so much garbage to find even a Soul 45, let alone a rare Soul 45. It was mostly a disheartening experience, but then suddenly a 45 would give you an adrenaline rush and nail you to another year of overblown expectations…
Today you are looking at a record that was in my “Head” every time I left the house on my weekend teenage quest…
I never ever found a copy out there in the vast Savannah of market stalls &secondhand shops.. not in 47 years of trawling.. and if I ever did - and it would have been ludicrous to hope for a flawless, Mint minus copy in a birth-sleeve…
Thankfully I never did, as it would surely have imprisoned me in a life of looking for records, all day, every day…
eeer LET ME OUT!!!

The winning bid was £ 301.00Lou Christie
Lightnin' Strikes
Here’s a Wigan Casino spin you don’t encounter as it original 1965 UK Red & White Demo, a gorgeous looking critter it is too; sitting in it’s MGMstarburst sleeve, vinyl is could hardly be better… it’s stunning.
We know a few purists would call it “non-Soul” but if you grew up in the 60’s, and spent your teen years on 70’s “The Northern Scene” this tune played a major part in our NS upbringing…
After all it’s catchy feelgood 60’s dance, vocally commanding, the instrumentation bursting with “backdrop and spin” moments.. there’s always a reason a white guy produces a good song, this reason on this occasion is “CHARLIE CALELLO” a man who sits in the top 5 of all arranger/producers of standout Northern Soul of all time!
Charlie on this occasion, Lou Christie is hit with the “Valli-Stick” and what a great job he does, as Calello gathers up all his Four Seasons experience and drops the “Crewe-culture” into this winner..
It’s a magnificent piece of uplifting 60’s, crafted into it’s final state by a genius, Lou Christie write it; but was he really expect the “Calello” treatment of his song… the final result must have been very pleasing, archetypal “Calello”..
But the main point here is it’s a FLAWLESS RED & WHITE that fits the jigsaw of Wigan Casino spins in their rarest form…
You may never encounter a better copy..

Please Stay / I'm In A Groove
An astonishing Mint-, utterly unblemished copy!
in 2017 how rare is that to see a top-drawer Chicago classic in spotless condition, not a freckle to be found..
The soundfile speaks for itself, it’s reputation for elevating a dancefloor is second to none, with it’s magically haunting ways..but all that quality is for me overtaken by it’s vinyl/label perfectness!
Refresh yourself with it’s miraculous qualities - whilst I go and marvel at it’s virginal qualities one more time..
CONDITION! CONDITION! CONDITION! it really counts…

( Please ) Take A Chance On Me / You Upset Me Baby
One of those records that’s never been bootlegged, overplayed or easy to find.. A pedigree 45 that always bring the crowed to the floor..
Classy Detroit delicacy benefiting from Motown, and it’s peripheral players, Cornelius and McKinley Jackson arranged both sides, so little wonder this lustrous recording is so fluid, so slick and so very addictive. Northern Soul at it’s easy-going while being brilliantly effective on the dancefloor… we all love a guaranteed floor-detonator especially one nobody has ever tired of..
Edward Hamilton long time mentor James Hendrix finishes off proceedings and we have two sides dynamic Detroit..
Now, check the condition. Labels are flaw-free, a-side vinyl is perfection, flipside vinyl has a merest brief sleeve brush.. this is as good as it gets..in more ways than one.

The winning bid was £ 612.00Pamoja
Oooh, Baby / Only The Lonely Know
Truly beautiful Northern Soul crossover that has gained so many followers over the years, a 2005 reissue press is now changing hands for 3 figure sums. Proving top quality tunes will always be in demand.
Listen how a precise blending of a shrill falsetto lead, knits seamlessly into a tapestry of rattling bongos and tricky guitar picking; instantly delighting the ear and feet.
A Chicago mid-70s masterpiece of our sound, a sinuous delivery of really cool laid back Soulful dance. The lead guy, cradled by a gentle chorus, a whistling sound effect breaks up the rhythm in this superior shuffler, that cleverly invites to back into dance mode almost immediately…
Flip it over, and the silky falsetto gives up an even more dramatic performance on a satiny-sultry ballad, you’ll find creeping into your senses. Echoing purr away in the background, as the warmness washes over you, eventually sweeping you away of a gentle wave of sleek Soul..
STEREO recording, that will have your ears pricked and intently directed to pounce up every delicious musical-morsel this 45 drops on you..
NOTE. This listing is a perfect copy

The winning bid was £ 221.00Dee Edwards
Can You Deal With That / Possess Me
The first and by far superior version, snappy, finger-clicking dancer drenched in Sweet-Sister-Sensuality.
Dee Edwards is in a sultry mood trying to entice her man with her sexy ways to be a one-girl-guy. Shrill backing girls, echo her desire, while a jazz guitar plucks out a shuffling rhythm for seamless Northern Soul Crossover dance.
Flip it over and there lies a gem for the Sunday “Chill-out” sessions as the gathering take there seductive mood to an even higher level and brilliance unfolds on a wave of suggestiveness.
Two top-drawer side, or maybe even top-shelf sides as I’m sure every red-blooded man will stir under the purrings of these ladies..
A superior double sider from Detroit, vinyl has a few light marks, a little more on the flipside. But as you can hear both sides play clean & clean. Both labels are are unsullied..
Nice copy - two killer tunes!

The winning bid was £ 346.00Blackberries
Somebody Up There Stereo / Mono
Motown compleatists we are betting you don’t own this “rarest of the rare ” Motown 45, in fact does anybody?
Scheduled as a June 1972 Mowest MW 5020F release, also lined up for a Mowest “Blackberries” album Mowest 106, neither press happened. Both withdrawn and now recognized as an ultimate Motown rarity; that we have certainly never encountered before.
No, that is RARE!
Written by the legendary LA (Mirwood) writer/producer Shirlie Matthews, Marva Holliday and produced by Deke Edwards (Dennis Lussier). This 7 girl team consisted of the familiar California songbirds Clydie King, Shirlee Matthews, Oma Heard, Carlena Williams, H.B. Barnum’s sister Billie, former Ikette / Mirettes Jessica Smith & teammate former Mirettes Venetta Fields…b
But only three artists did the vocals Clydie King, Shirlee Matthews and Venetta Fields, still a chorale of Los Angeles Fillies of the highest calibre. A hand-picked Sister-Act Sister act mixing their Gospel Roots with as pinch of Funk.
Sadly an act Motown discarded completely, who knows what this thoroughbred dream-team would have accomplished.
NO release, no PROMO, No Album! Just this solitary test press one of the rarest 45’s in the Motown jigsaw. With Gospel Funk potential thrown in..
They don’t come any rarer than this!
Sorry, this item has already been won!
The winning bid was £ 243.00Robert Ward
I Will Fear No Evil / My Love Is Strictly Reserved For You
Silly RARE white Promo copy! In spectacular condition - a Detroit collectors piece that seldom breaks surface.. especially in utterly flawless condition and glaring WHITE appeal..
Two strong sides from this Soul/R&B guitarist of huge repute, a valued and influential member of the Ohio Untouchables (Lu Pine) after transferring his talents from The Falcons before going it alone on such heralded labels as Thelma.
An under-recorded as a solo artist, this Michigan-magnificent gives up a monumental performance on his only 45 that doesn’t credit group back up.
Riding a tsunami of horns Ward’s gravel-dusted vocal fits perfectly into arrangement punctuated by his skilled guitar licks, and uncredited vocal-group assistance enriches the session attacked by tortured squeals from an unknown participant.
This is killer Motor City Northern Soul that for unknown reason has sat on the bask burner, relieving on collectors tapes, Soul forum accolades to keep it in the Rare Soul collectors sights.. time for some DJ action, and what better way to tease the public than dropping an infinitely rare WHITEPROMO under the turntable-cams..
Almost forgot, the flipside is damn good as will - I wonder if this brilliant under-heard dancer will get dropped into a set or two at the eagerly anticipated DETROIT A GO GO event in October.. I do hope so..

The winning bid was £ 55.00The Patrick Bradley
Just One More Chance Instrumental / Vocal
Black is beautiful, especially when it’s MINT - and offers that elusive instrumental version of one the all time great “niter” instrumentals. That on a Saturday Night / Sunday Morning would electrify Wigan Casino, Cleethoropes Pier, Yate and a multitude of Northern Soul events every across England…simultaneously.
The perfect non-vocal production to kick those amphetamines into action, a 1976 to 79 adrenaline-pumping catalyst, along with the likes of Billy Arnell’s “Tough Girl” that had the power to set the dancefloor alight!
Billy Arnell and his Sparkles went on to a “Grail”, whilst this equally as effective tune, went into obscurity as the seventies drew to a close..
Rememberi, 95% of the PROMO copies do NOT carry the instrumental side. and the Black stock copy is 100 x rarer than the usually impotent Promo.
Today the STOCK is no easy find, especially in immaculate condition… check out the soundfile to be fired back in time to when the Northern Soul all nighter was about steaming atmosphere spins, backdrops and synchronized hand-clapping.. this instrumental just like Billy Arnell, Al DeLory’s - Right On played at the right time, in the right place, to the right people.. would bring the house down..
You can’t beat a killer NS instrumental that you’ve not heard lately, with the power to trigger uncontrollable euphoric recall..

Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever / I Like Everything About You
Some label vistas require no superlatives to catch your attention..
Red & White TMG 500 series just speak for themselves..
Some groups require not a single word from a mere mortal like me, to enhance their unparalleled reputations.. nothing I could say about the Four Tops has already been echoed through the decades, this is one of their very best with a B-side that requires a Northern Soul turntable-drop or two…
Condition is blindingly flawless Mint minus in every respect..
Nuff said..

The winning bid was £ 111.00Bobby Mandolph
Gotta Get You Back / Tell Me Tomorrow
A Northern Soul Classic that was meddled with far to early in it’s brief life, after flirting with Wigan Casino’s turntables, with instant dancefloor response. California’s major force behind supplying the Casino with it’s West Coast rarities thought it a good idea to get Arthur Wright to reissue it with an instrumental flipside. The rather aptly name “Double Crossing”..
rather than being the money spinner anticipated, both 45s, the already rare original and the reissue sunk without trace; today both variations seldom surface, with the PROMO 45 being by far the rarest of it 3 incarnations.
So sadly a classic style Northern Soul thoroughbred fell at the first fence… and Wigan Casino never took to the “Exus Trek” style instrumental on the reissue. The vocal original never turned up in enough quantities to see it through to the Casino top slot it so obviously indicated it would.
So the good news is - the flipside has never been reissued, and it’s unbelievably brilliant.. and yet to receive the Northern Soul adulation it deserves.. So let’s leave standout old-style stompers aside for a few moments, and listen to a Beat Ballad Heaven at it’s most-exquisite!
Bobby Mandolph’s “Tell Me Tomorrow” glides seamlessly into your being, a classy hybrid of Crossover Northern Soul with soaring horns, celestial girls, and rich male-harmony choruses mingling on a wave of strings…building to such potent levels Beat Ballad Heaven boundaries are swept aside on a wave of overwhelming Soul.
Two for the price of one.. a thunderous stomper that should have been a Monster under different circumstances, backed up with distilled Crossover refined to the ultimate degree…
Just TOO MUCH SOUL for one man to take…

I'm Standing
When I was a kid, this record on UK Stateside was one of the ultimate records to own… soon in to the 70’s those very few Stateside copies became just wishful thinking..
Then those young Brit USA invaders, pioneer diggers turned a few copies up on the original Holton label to feed demand for a few years.. then we endured the “counterfeit” copied to fool, and mislead the collector but missing the machine stamped matrix
Today, this classic is following the fabled Stateside 45 into unavailability; before you today a fine clean original press. A copy with machine stamped SK4M 6588 1A and as little discreet signature of an old Cleethorpes DJ“Paul Rowan”
Paul you were never one to play “Classic NS Oldies” is that why this copy is in such nice condition..?

Apologies if I have this all wrong but...
What appears to be a Flirtations 70's boot with a stick on label has just sold for £250.
Here's the link to the eBay sale and also the popsike link to when it was sold last year for £53 (still too much for a boot)
https://www.popsike.com/THE-FLIRTATIONS-STRONGER-SETTLE-DOWN-FESTIVAL-DJ-COPY/201547031665.html
In fairness to the seller, it wasn't described as original and when I asked, they said it could be a 70's boot.

Barbara Jean & The Lyrics
Any Two Can Play / Why Weren't You There
A DJ’s dream 45, no matter which side you play on this Detroit delicacy the result is exactly the same..
The writing partnership of Jake Hammond & Johnny Mae Matthews yet again craft a Northern Soul dancer of the highest quality. “Any Two Can Play” which I heard at Newark’s “Feed Your Soul” Sunday chill, resident DJand Detroit aficionado Richard Johnstone play recently, to an appreciative crowded dancefloor.
A with the lilting guitar intro, is caught by vocal harmony from the Lyrics. The perfect opening before, a shrill Soul Sister vocal takes to the air. Throughout the tune The Lyrics endow the recording with rich harmonies.. this is top-drawer Northern Soul rarity to drop..but wait!
Ernest Burt’s creation whichThelma Lindsey’s recorded for his Magic City outlet, is sitting on the flipside… with the Lyrics once again opening the way for a Soul temptress to follow with a beseeching vocal asking “Why Weren’t You There”
Two great sides immense sides back to back…

Willie Tee
First Taste Of Hurt / Funky Funky Twist
A flawless copy, not a blemish..so hard these days to acquire top-notch Northern Soul in “as good as it gets” condition.
Willie Turbinton’s legacy to Northern Soul is a rich vein of pure quality, regularly inflicting frustration, as some of his 45’s are painfully rare! A man ever since his first 45 release in 1962, had a instinctive feel for a fluid Soul flow within his own creations..
Hitting the big time in 1966 with the timeless “Walkin’ Up A One Way Street”, that success was sadly never eclipsed. But boy did he work hard to follow up that whiff of success with a string of Soul pearls to consider..
This is one of those highly coveted Gatur 45s and would be one of the easiest acquisitions from the Gatur catalog; expect rarity is stretched out, with all collectors unwilling to sell such an exquisite tune, that always inflames the dancefloor.
Only Allen Toussaint & Wardell Quezergue bettered Willie Tee’s Northern Soul output. Which he thankfully displayed, when he graced the stage at legendary Cleethorpes weekender all those years ago.
Much loved, greatly admire, sadly missed, a true standout Soul-man who lives on in the heart’s of all Rare-Soul collectors…
Click the soundfle and relive this guy’s wealth of wisdom, passion and poetry…
Avoid your “Taste Of Hurt”by not missing this near perfect copy… of brillance

Tommy Youngblood
Evil Eve
The Los Angeles ruler of R&B kicks ass yet again.. on this near impossible to find YELLOW VINYL neighborhood release.
We have only ever seen this rarity for sale ONCE, and this is the first time we have ever had a copy. Even with my deteriorating memory, this startling disc would be unforgettable..with it’s brilliant yellow vinyl and Gold label it’s a real eye-catcher.
But this 45 is so much more than just a “Pretty Face” it’s an enraged snarling slab of R&B!! A potential floor-destroyer in the correct hands, with the power to turn a Soul night completely on it’s head..
So unleash the wicked Mr. Youngblood and hear why that Eve… is so evil !

Celest Hardie
You're Gone
This 45 needs no words from me to elevate it’s reputation, beyond it’s already high-regard it has enjoyed for the last 4 decades..a record with depth of quality, that prevents you ever growing tired of hearing it.
In short …The Greatest female Northern Soul offering to ever emerge from the Bay Area.
But if you want to fully appreciate the vocal prowess of Miss Celeste Hardie make sure when the postie knocks on your door, you play the tortured Deep Soul flipside straight after you’ve dance around your kitchen. Soulful dance just don’t come much better than this, the tortured despair on the flip will bring you down to earth.
This copy has a couple of wispy surface blemishes, you have to search for on the vinyl… as clean as it gets, and that goes for the labels too.

James Lately
Love Friends And Money / Tears Running And Falling From My Eyes
Chasing Northern Soul Holy-Grails is toughest test of endurance any seroius record collector could ever encounter..
Some are so seldom seem you have to apprehend the Rarest Of The Rare when the opportunity comes along, no matter what price and no matter what condition. In fact condition can in most cases be something to make you wince… but the overriding desire is the ownership..
So what happens when a copy of any Holy-Grail surfaces in near HOLYCONDITION? Not virginal or untouched,or squeaky clean, but a much better example of a record we’ve only encountered before in vg or less?
Well before you today is the finest example of this monumental slab of Detroit Northern Soul I’ve seen in memory. Some mild surface blemishes but no scratches or marks that transfer to the stylus, nothing to destroy the sound of this piece of neighborhood magic!
Those sprightly strings zip with distilled clarity, the harmony boys in the background purr with silky purity and James Lately’s voice rises and falls with such lucidity, as he states his quest “looking for a woman” to complete his life..
The standout flipside is even cleaner…
AT LAST a copy of a NS masterpiece x 2nin cherished condition, allowing you to hear truly sumptuous 60’s Rare Soul from the streets exactly how it was recorded..
A rare chance to own a “Grail” in a condition to admire…compared to the few others I’ve seen.

Bobby Bland
Bobby Bland Sings
Everybody’s favourite R&B artist who’s purring gnarled vocal carried a Soulful elegance drenched in uniqueness. His portrayal of lyrics painted a picture in your head, of his pain, his joy, his defiance, his anger.. the full gamut of emotions he was consummately skilled in transferring to you..
A man at the top of his game, for literally 60 years, after learning trade in Memphis blues areas, well before I was born. Today he is rightly considered a demigod by both Blues & Soul fans alike..
Nobody did it quite like Bobby Blue, as this very elusive 1964 British EPdisplays.. 4 of his best Texas recordings for the year on one disc protected by a unique fully laminated flipback “art” cover.

Sweet Three
That's The Way It Is / Big Lovers Come In Small Packages
A double slab of girl-group Northern Soul born from that Philly team of John Madara, David White, Leon Huff, Len Barry & Jimmy “The Wiz” Wisner. Boy these guys in the mid-60’s could do no wrong, already enjoying unprecedented chart success with Len Barry’s string of hits..before he switched camp to RCA.
..whilst also missing chart entries, but creating future Northern Soul timeless classics with the likes of Johnny Caswell, Joey Heatherton, The Formations etc.
So enter The Swans who had been building a strong reputation within Philly having already worked with Joe Renzetti & Kenny Gamble. The team decided on a more up to date name christening them the Sweet Three. Their first record was a twee girly flop. This their 2nd. Decca release was a totally different animal. Both sides serving up Philly girl-group Northern Soul in the strongest possible terms.
We lead with the Big City Sound “That’s The Way It Is (A Girl’s In Love)” a beautiful sound with essences of the “Barry” sound. Leon Huff on piano, Bobby Gregg on drums, Joe Mack on Bass, Panama Francis banging out the rhythmic percussion at Bell Sound studios New York.
What a gathering of talent with Leon Huff taking total charge of the flipside, with the lyrics aimed directly at himself and his diminutive stature. Imagine him standing at the piano banging out the arrangement looking over his should at the Femme-trio with his girls testifying “Big Lovers Often Come In Small Packages” a statement some years later “Prince” validated.
Two great sides crafted by a dream-team that would by the end of the decade split to follow solo paths..
This attractive Pink PROMO is utterly flawless!

Miracles
You Really Got A Hold On Me / Happy Landing
A beyond rare 1962 UK Demo copy.
Fabulous clean vinyls, label adorned with that highly coveted silver “A” all housed in the birth sleeve. What a fabulously beautiful thing, which for the UK Tamla Motown disciple this spectacular format is a “Grail” that seldom surfaces.
Glistening with 60’s sleeve and label art “Oriole” epitomizes the era, as being the vehicle for Motown’s USA product from 1962 to 1963, with EMItaking up the baton for Motown UK outlet to move to Stateside by 1965 EMIrewarded Motown’s unprecedented chart success with a label of their own.. the rest is history..
Out of all the UK labels Motown enlisted, surely Oriole completely catches the period with exquisite art.
The DEMO’s on any of the titles are excruciatingly frustrating to find. Rare in the extreme - act accordingly.

Notations
What More Can I Say / Leading Lady
As “Low-Rider” sweet Soul fever spreads across Europe and beyond, I’m concerned all these rare independent harmony 45s, may dry up under the demand.
Lately the raft of collectors seeking these rarities to play, hear & own this genre has witnessed unprecedented demand outside the USA. Here’s a Chicago sweetener to quench your thirst with.
Clifford Curry influenced Soulful stroller benefiting from a mellow lead voice, cradle by seamless vocal-group replies. Giving up a rare level of quality, as all the vocal & the string distill into a whirlpool of Soulful clarity.
Flip it over and there’s no escaping the piercing Sweet Soul sound as Te Notation stay in the groove as another “Stepper” hits the air… leaving me unable to chose which side is the best..
A two for the price of one 45, offering exactly harmonies, cradle by strong backing arrangement using real instruments, real emotion to deliver their messages of love..
Validated RARE Sweet Soul at it’s finest

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
I Care About Detroit / Blank
The really rare Motown 45s are a constant concern to the Hitsville devotee trying to complete the near impossible full run of Motown vinyl. Not matter how difficult it is, this has not deterred 1000’s from trying.
But even why the task nears a possible full set (dream on) there are those horrid condition rarities that need upgrading, the rarities that just never surface in anything better than vg - / writing on label or that dismissive line “warp does not affect play)
Here is an astonishing copy of just one such rarity… A 1968 especially commissioned recording words by Jimmy Clark & Jack Combs , sung by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, produced by Al Cleveland & Smokey himself… It’s aim was to put pride back in the City after the devastating spring 1968 riots. This was intended for Radio play, not for commercial sales.
This copy I don’t believe had been played until we lifted the beautiful harmonious social statement for you to hear. Whilst your waiting for an Andantes, Nick & The Jaguars or a “Money” 78rpm to surface in your dreams. Capuring pure condition rarities is essential in your collection.
Check out the “as new” labels and be assured the vinyl matches that startling label completely.
You will not locate a finer copy..

Elmore James
It Hurts Me Too / Bleeding Heart
To keep our regular UK SUE collectors happy, here is one of the elusive numbers in stunning condition. Very close to a Mint minus, a couple of feeble sleeve contact hairlines just taking i off that tip-top grade. Both labels a super-clean with no evidence of center-hole spindle intrusions.
Besides it’s standout purity the 45 a mood-changing slab of the Blues from one of it’s greatest exponents. Elmore’s trademark groaning vocal decorates this slow-drag of despair. Complimentary piano, exuberant Elmore guitar fusing all three elements into a whirlpool of The Blues!
Flip it over and “Bleeding Heart” is every note as good.. Sue 383 from 1965 is one mighty testament to this Hall Of Famer’s work.
In the kind of condition that doesn’t present itself very often..
The Sue sleeve is only a replica by the way…

Martha Star
Love Is The Only Solution / I'm Lonely - Thelma
Thelma 112: 112 (45s)
The pre-Wigan era the search for stompers was my imperative "Love Is The Only Solution" ticked all the boxes for me. A crowded instrumental intro, brandishing honkin'-horns, Piano whacks, pumping sax and a femme-vocal dripping with attitude, strutting through that forest of instruments scything down all before her, oh that instrumental break, the away it lifts up and up to a crescendo.. Brilliant Detroit.. and I hadn't even noticed the covert girl-chorus in the background that today I think is a masterstroke...allowing Martha's vocal the rip it up.
It was for a 19 year old exactly what the Doctor ordered, to drive me on towards another Brian recommended 45...
Oh how foolish is youth.. I don't think I even gave the flipside a brief listen.. it was not until the 80's that it hit me, the very greatest Thelma recording was on the flipside.. "I'm Lonely" is saturated in everything Detroit Soul was in the mid-60's. Vibes, squealing girls, driving mid tempo beat and Martha's rich purring, pouring out imploring lyrics of loneliness, I just drowned in it's glorious despair..
Two killer tunes on one disc, with "I'm Lonely" out stripping most any girl tune you care to throw at me, for truly effective Northern Soul.. it shimmers alone it it's brilliance..

Cornell Gunter
Love In My Heart / Down In Mexico
Together: 101 (45s)
This 45 is essentially a vocal-group recording, although the label does not credit any group; Cornell's whole career was hinged by close involvement with the vocal-group scene. The Platters, The Coasters, The Flairs were all drop-offs along the way, during his varied near 4 decade career. Going solo he incorporated his own groups The Ermines, The Cornells etc. so it is not surprising this 1975 D.I.Y. recording written and produced by him, is decorated by a full blown vocal group chorus. But tat is only 1/2 the story as he ignores the "Disco" pressure the Soul makers were under at the time Cornell pulls in a mix of California Jazz instrumentation, a wealth of male vocal harmonies and a typically Californian wavy saxophone haunting the background..
The hybrid of California jazz fusion, Doo-Wop and Soul works in spectacular fashion, delivering Northern Soul Crossover dance at it's most dazzling..
What A Tune...I wish I still had this 45 in my DJ set. Now that the Sunday Soul Rendezvous's are now the first destination for many Soulie's, and this would be the most-perfect of drops...
Condition Report
an impeccable copy - other than occasional minuscule surface rub to the effective light blue label (see scan) this 45 is flawless. The vinyl, we are unable to locate even a blemish on the play surface, as close to a Manship Mint as we're ever likely to encounter, no sign of DJ encounters on the playback either (listen). The last copy we had of this title over 3 years ago was a disappointing copy with vinyl and labels flaws, and it flew out the building.

Jimmy and the Sun Dials
Where Did I Lose You? / All About You
V-Tone : 503 (45s)
We know of only a mere 2 copies residing in the UK; the other one being a rather bland white label test press (the only other example we have ever sold) but that 45 had a horrid sound flaw 2/3rd of the way through. Which didn't deter the purchaser, as the rarity and sheer pumping power of the recording overrode the questionable sound quality. So at last with this promo copy being flawless, I can hear the full potency of this glorious slab of "foot-to-the-floor" Northern Soul.
As for the just as meager known USA residing copies, they are universally considered vocal group gold-dust. Rare in the extreme, a Doo-Wop trophy that hardly anyone owns. And even if they did, who would ever sell a flawless copy with the promo labels..
A two pronged "impossible" with both sides considered "Grails" within two of the world's most vital vinyl collecting scenes, presented here in enviable condition..
Record collecting does not get any more challenging or satisfying than this opportunity.

Irma Thomas
Time Is On My Side + I Need Your Love So Bad / Straight From The Heart + Without Love
Liberty: LEP 4035 (EP)
What a combination of the vocal-bounty Irma's mesmerizing vocal provides and H. B.'s penchant for the full orchestra treatment, and the writing skills of Mead & Norman with the weight of L.A. other seasoned producer Eddie Ray bringing togethe a mighty, mighty build of real Soul. Just listen to the blanket chorus that accompanies her on "Time Is On My Side". A thunderous tidal wave of vocals weave even more potency into the session. Not many recordings of the era could match this monumental recording, maybe Garnet Mimms's "Cry Baby" carries the same overwhelming characteristics of throwing everything the studio could muster at the recording.. Phil Spector was no doubt noting he was not the only kid on the block embracing a "Wall Of Sound" commitment.
Check out the impressive track listing, featuring Deep Soul laments, Beating heart-rendering Soul strollers all blessed with Irma's ease of vocal and poignant portrayal of the lyrics. Yes, a "Queen" at work...

2. I Need Your Love So Bad

Erma Franklin
Whispers (Getting Louder) / I Get The Sweetest Feeling
Brunswick: 755430 DJ (45s)
The result for me, is a rare thing, that someone was able to elevate and already scintillating classic.
..and the recording booth boys were not leaving it there, they got Erma to simmer-down a tad, and pour out a delicious version of Jackie's signature tune.. with superior arrangement, a full orchestra in motion and Erma's vocal again sailing above the proceedings. This stereo production is breathtakingly crystal clear, every note, every squeal of emotion hits you square in the face... it's astounding clarity staying with you long after the record ends..
Of course this record is in perfect condition throughout.. it has to be to fully appreciate the sheer quality in depth of such a thoughtful production throws out at you.

Can't You See, That She Believes You Do
Why Keep Her Hanging On, When There's Nothing To Hang On To
Why Do You Tell Her Things, That You Know Won't Come True..
Let Her Go .. do the right Thing
Let Her Go...Be a Friend...
Let Her GOOO, Let Her Go, You Just Got To Let Go..
I Can't Can't Help But Love Her So...
These lines mean more to the disciples of The Torch, Blackpool Mecca, Wigan Casino than most Northern Soul records ever made. Go on tell me you've not sang it out loud as you danced...

Joe Phillips
I Just Can't Help Thinking About You / Can't Help But To Love You
Omen: 6 DJ (45s)
The 52 year old Los Angeles creation borrows heavily from the Brill Building, New York but for me, surpasses even some of the very greatest stirrings that establishments gave birth to. I must admit once I heard Rob Gray spin it a couple of years back at a "Feed Your Soul" Newark I quickly pulled a copy from my dusty collection and added it to my set, so uncool I know...but Soul-induced spine-tingling is such a rare experience, I had to incorporate it into my hour..
This style is now sweeping the country, and long may it last, goose-pimple productions need to be inflicted upon the public, even though many may have been blinded by the stomping traditional Northern Soul offerings..
If the mighty strolling mood-changers are not for you, just flip it over.. power-pack Northern Soul awaits..
The best of both worlds.. and rarity assured as most all of the few copies that were briefly available through the 80's have long been press-ganged into collections..and this copy is flawless with no signs of an affair with a NS DJ
Condition Report

Martha And The Vandellas
Jimmy Mack / Third Finger Left Hand
Tamla Motown: TMG 599 DJ (45s)
A Youth club sound that has endured now 5 decades of both sides filling floors and Motown nights across Britain, particularly a favourite with the ladies as one side portrays Boyfriend absence and longing, whilst the other side cover girl aspirations of wedlock. Two quintessential Holland-Dozier-Holland journeys into the psyche of the female..
Popularity, radio & Club Jocks over-exposure, took the shine of what are two great Motown movers. EMI recognizing the flipside was receiving as much attention as the A-side repromoted it in 1970 and again in 1972 all differing Green & White DEMO's changing the "A" side to suite.
Before you today is the real deal last of the 500 series DEMO that EMI never expected such healthy sales and long term impact for Martha & the girls..
As a DEMO TMG fans will need no confirmation that it's first clothes are by far it's rarest
Condition Report
Both Green & White promo labels are flawless, no writing, stains, tears, stickers or distracting marks in sight. Vinyl although played has NO hairlines, marks, blemishes what so very near Mint minus we've gone for a conservative EX+. Enchanting Enchanters
Boss Action / No One In This World
Ben Mo Keith: 685 (45s)
A hugely sought after 45 for more reasons than one; topside gives up uncompromising Street-Funk, drenched in blaring-brass, stabbing trumpets, strong bass guitar rhythm, very JB influenced Deep Funk dancer. The lead vocal chants, squeals, growls his way though the dance instruction and a tsunami of destructive horns roll out. Proper real-deal Funker, so hard to acquire as the original.. but there's more!
As so often happens after a arduous Funk session, the group snuggle into a a sulking Sweet Soul "Low-Rider" experience, this 45 is no exception. The rattling drummer is still, as are the horns, but this time icy-cool falsetto's take to the air. The silky smooth lead hitting some impressive notes, cradled by note holding harmony, before he stretches over the falsetto high-bar with razor-sharp delivery, ratcheting the song up yet another notch...awesome ballad.
Hard FUNK followed by super-sweet-Soul.. rare Soul 45 hunting don't get no more satisfying than adding records of the double-pleasing calibre to your collection..
Condition Report
Red label is typical Chicago press, at first looks to have a mild fade, but we all know neighborhood Chicago labels are always a little light on colour depth, there's no fade happened, this is the exact colour characteristic of the "ORIGINAL label. Vinyls are flawless, there is a light blemish on the run-in but from memory this is inherent to the masterplate,. not affecting play in any way. Play surface is a strong unblemished Mint minus.
