Does anyone have experience of having lots of 45s shipped over from the US and Canada? If i was to have say 100 45s sent over would it just be a case of getting them boxed up and packaged and marked fragile and use the normal postage system, or use UPS or a proper carrier?

normal postage does the job. takes longer for deffo and you may be hit with a customs charge.

i have had plenty over the past year with very few problems. i think i have paid about a tenner at the post office for about 3 out of 20 lots. one didnt arrive but that can happen regardless of size.

just make sure they dont mark it face cream! so ok it was face cream i ordered but it cost me bloody £21 for shipping to the UK, think next time I need to get one of you lot over there off here to have it delivered to your house and forwarded onto me in the UK, and it's only a tiny tiny tube!

I normally have 2 or 3 smaller parcels sent rather than 1 large one, less attention from customs etc, so don't usually incur the nasty charges!

If they're valuable get them shipped by DHL or UPS if possible then you've got little chance of them getting lost. (it's not that expensive)

Ask the person who's shipping to fill out the customs form as "old jukebox 45s" and tick "gift" then put something like $50 in the value box.

That way you'll avoid paying a customs charge. (You can do this with normal post but if they subsequently go missing you're not in line for much compo).

I've had batches like this a couple of times without charges.

Don't use more than the equivalent of £18 for customs value or you'll get hit for VAT(@ 17.5%), Import duty and their very nice handling charge for charging you. Vintage 45s don't count as antiques apparently according to the PO and HM Customs & Excise. :angry:

I'd split them up and have them sent to different addresses. The customs people use the total value of the goods INCLUDING POSTAGE to work out the import duty you owe and then add on VAT. So you pay VAT on the import duty, so tax on tax on postage . I found this out to my cost, mind you 165 boxes to the same address was a bit silly in hindsight . I'd had 119 before they caught up with me though.

There must be a way around it I think if you are a business partnership and your partner is in the US your can be classed as just moving stock internaly within your business. Tim Brown would give you the low down on this I'm sure.
