Handsome Mel Williams, Vocalist, Dead at 68

Mel Williams, vocalist most popularly associated with The Johnny Otis Band, died Sunday from cancer. He was 68.

A commanding presence in the early Rock 'n' Roll music era in 1950s Los Angeles, Williams was a popular vocalist with bandleader Johnny Otis. He was known as "Handsome" Mel Williams to the throngs of female fans who came to his performances in droves. He recorded with many artists including Jesse Belvin, Arthur Lee Maye, and Little Esther, and on many labels including DIG, where he was the largest selling recording artist. He is survived by his son, Mel Williams, Jr., Esq. of South Orange, New Jersey. Funeral services will be held in the Manchester Chapel at Inglewood Cemetery on Saturday, October 29, at 9 a.m.
