12) The Incredibles – I can’t get over losing your love/For sentimental reasons (Audio arts) Ex (looks unplayed)  £10

Pure class – silky vocal brilliance from this underrated group.   “I Can’t Get Over Losing Your Love’ is one of those 45s that takes off like a shot and moves like a freight train. From the opening drum roll, through the piano chords and the group harmonies, this is one of those records that demands that you get up and dance. When you get to the second verse and the organ kicks in, it gets even better.

Written by lead singer Cal Waymon, the song features some fantastic hooks as well as a propulsive beat.

13) Tina Britt – Sookie Sookie/Key to the highway (Veep) VG- (plays fine for DJing) £15
While I don't think it's possible to hear a bad version of this cut (it's been recorded by the ranks of Grant Green to Steppenwolf and every version I've heard smokes!) However this Detroit mover maybe the ultimate version.  Tina's sassy and powerful vocals match the ultra funky guitar and raw to the bone drums for one that's guaranteed to lift your Friday.

14) Kent Meade & the Remington Sunshine – Funky to me/The bad one (Magic Carpet) VG+ £20

15) Lil & Rennie – Keep a lite (showerin’ down)/Tennesse Waltz (Reprise) £20

Uplifting Gospel R&B funk straight from a pulpit somewhere down south.  Infectious grooves all over this H.B Barnum production.  Highly recommended 45!

16) Peggy & Artie - How Do You Feel (When Your Love Is So Real)/ I'll Be Leaving You Soon (King) VG (plays great) £20

While I normally like to find out as much information as possible about the records I sell I have to apologise for not being able to source anything about Peggy and Artie. However, having listened to these two tracks I can assure you that this is one terrific soul record, with the belting voice of Peggy complimented superbly with Artie's husky vocal accompaniment.

Killer soul cuts at a great price - Sells  for £50 elsewhere

17) The Untouchables & mark one band – The dragster boy/Dragsters Encore (FAAP) Ex £15
A Strange & beguiling 45 that’s not like anything else you have!
The tragic tale of a young hot rodder meeting his fate during a high speed police chase. Propelled by wah wah guitar, organ & trumpet "The Dragster Boy" just can't outrun the fuzz. Sirens blare as our hero loses control of his ride and we hear a gut wrenching crash. "It's too late". He's run his last race.
Whatever restraint was exercised on side one of this 45 is completely thrown out the window on "The Dragster's Encore". A countdown to a rocket launch kicks things off and a locomotive makes an appearance as the Mark One Band goes for broke under a barrage of sound effects.
Recorded at label owner Elmer Hillard's infamous basement studio in Richmond's Fulton Hill, this FAAP (Fine Artists of America Productions) Records release is a real head scratcher. However, this lo-fi opus is not without it's charms. In the category of early 70's funk 45's about dead drag racers this record ranks among the best.
"The Dragster Boy" was the second release by The Untouchables on FAAP, the first being the crazy fast bongo fueled killer "Find A New Love" which you can hear on the superb
Ol' Virginia Soul Part 2 compilation. Said collection also has more details on the fascinating stories of The Untouchables, label mate Laurie Tate, and FAAP Records.

18) The Poets – She blew a good thing/Out to lunch (Symbol) Ex (looks unplayed) £10

‘She Blew a Good Thing’ by the Poets is one of those classic 45s that is eminently danceable, laden with sweet, soulful harmonies and packed with enough hooks to get you singing along.

One of two groups with the same name working in different parts of New York City (the other Poets recorded for Red Bird and eventually formed the basis for 70s hitmakers the Main Ingredient), the Poets recorded three 45s for Juggy Murray’s Symbol records in the mid-60s.

Led by Ronnie Lewis (who gets co-writing credit with Murray), the Poets also featured Melvin Bradford, Paul Fulton and Johnny James).

‘She Blew a Good Thing’ made it all the way to #2 on the R&B charts (scraping the outer limits of the Pop Top 40) in the spring of 1966.

The song is a longtime fave on the Northern Soul scene in the UK. Try finding something equally  as good for £10 – A total bargain!

19) Jackie Wilson – I’ve lost you/Those heartaches (Brunswick) VG+ £10
The names listed on this label are a veritable roll call of soul geniuses from Chicago and beyond. The song is written by Van McCoy (one of my favorite songwriters of the 60's who has had dozens of his records featured on this site), it was produced by Chicago's amazing Carl Davis (whose resume includes work with Major Lance, Billy Butler, The Chi-Lites and so many more), directed by Gerald Sims (vocalist of the Daylighters & The Radiants, guitarist, songwriter, producer), and arranged by Sonny Sanders (right hand man to Carl Davis, and a veteran of the early '60's Detroit scene as well.) Add the amazing vocals of Jackie Wilson and this record is plain and simply a done deal.

It was a brilliant career move that brought Jackie Wilson into the Chicago soul scene (and specifically under the wing of producer Carl Davis) in 1966; Jackie's dozens upon dozens of solo records cut between '57- '66 were produced in New York City by Dick Jacobs, and these big productions are just as important as the work of Sam Cooke in defining pop-soul music.

This particular record was the 5th release by the Wilson/ Davis team, and the combination of Jackie's emotive voice, sophisticated songs and arrangements were a winning formula; one that resulted in their sixth release together being the smash hit "Higher And Higher".
