Anyone got a definite on which is first & why the change??  I know discogs says that the original is the "What Does It Take" cover & the foreign issues (titled "These Eyes" also use that design).

do all labels title the album as "What Does It Take To Win Your Love"?  The variation is only in the covers? Or are there "Gotta Hold On To This Feeling" labels too?

''Gotta hold on'' was first issued in '69, then the popularity of ''What does it take'' brought about the reissue in '70 as the same title. With regards to labels not 100% sure but guess they would be different titles,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The change came about when Motown refused to issue ''What does it take'' as a 45 due to quality issues !!!, but DJ airplay forced the issue and the lp name change.

Please correct me if I am wrong anyone............

Thanks.  I have both covers but the labels title the album "What Does It Take" in both.  

Soulfulkindamusic lists "What Does It Take" 45 as the earlier single from 1969, followed by "These Eyes" & then "Gotta Hold On"

Maybe because "What Does It Take" was the last single taken off the "Home Cookin'" LP, it was still hot so they included it on the next LP too & titled or retitled the LP accordingly??

Only promo LPs I can find mentioned are "Gotta Hold On To This Feeling"

Sorry guys, did not make myself entirely clear, I was talking about the lp's and dates not the 45's, seem to recall reading about this somewhere re the reissue of the lp.................

yeah, but again, bsn not always 100% accurate either, maybe definites are lost to time, wondering if promos exist for the "What Does It Take" LP?

So far four variations:

1) promo "Gotta" sleeve & white label

2) stock "Gotta" sleeve & label

3) stock "What" sleeve & label

4) stock "Gotta" sleeve & "What" label

only Billboard listings are chart appearance of the "What" LP from early 1970.

Yet another unsolved mystery, only someone with all four variants will put this one to bed. The same will apply to Marvin Gaye's Grapevine/Groove lp ........................ it is a case of Motown bending due to popularity of records being played. 

Interestingly there is another account on Wicki, that say's as per my first comment !!!!

Krisjust picked up you post; Motown issued lps to pick up sales from hit singles ,like all companies did but berry was slightly more aggresive issuing an reissuing lps out of synch i.e. Originals,smokey,Marvin when US covers would be acut and paste job, unlike us nerdy anoraks joe public did not care that hte Vinyl title did not correalate with the cover .Also unlike our more obsessive /richer chums motown lp original issues matter not one jot {unless UK ,which yours are not} as all the lps mentioned are 10$ or less .Chronology of singles is "what Does" jan 68, "These Eyes",Jan 69,"Gotta Holdon " Aug 69. If youard really keen to discoverthe sequence of related Lps cds reissues ,budget pickwicksetc ! Go to dont " dont forget the motor city" by Keith Hughes{the Best in the game for singles] and "both sides now publications" aweb site by david edwards {the best for all lps. if your feeling really energetic can you sought out the chronology of my100s of worldwide Supremes lps? have agreat year lol Johnny
