" The Soul Of Stax " - Sky ' Community Channel ' broadcast Saturday 14/10 @ 3.45 PM
Did anyone else see this gem of a programme ?
I was flicking ( steady ..... it is Sunday morning ) through the documentary channels yesterday afternoon in the attempt to find something decent to watch , when I had to do a double take - were my eyes deceiving me ? no - the documentary channel was to show
" The Soul Of Stax " , starting at 3.45 PM .
I looked at the info blurb for the programme , and by the description it gave , It was not one I had seen before . 3.45 PM duly arrived and the programme did not dissappoint . The opening credits did throw me somewhat , as they were in french , except for the title of the programme .
Chronicling the rise and fall of the Stax empire , the programme ( sadly only an hour long ) had interviews with Jim Stewart and Estell Axton ; Rufus Thomas , William Bell - plus an great clip of him singing " You Don't Miss Your Water " with Rufus' son Marshall on piano ; Jerry Wexler talking about the tie-in with Atlantic ; Booker T & The MGs playing " Green Onions " ; Booker T , Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn discussing Otis Redding ; Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson of The Memphis Horns ; showed how the racial aspect in the States affected Stax ; Isaac Hayes discussing Sam & Dave and how he ' adapted ' " You Don't Know Like I Know " from it being a gospel song ( followed by a clip of a gospel choir in church singing the ' original ' ! ) ; The Watts riots of 1965 ; Al Bell ; Jesse Jackson ; footage of the 1967 Stax / Volt tour in England , showing Otis singing " Try A Little Tenderness " ; Otis at the Monterey Pop Concert in 1967 ; the death of Otis in December 1967 , and the effect it had on Stax ; Mavis & The Staple Singers ; WattStax ( with Rufus Thomas telling the crowd to come on down to the front of the stage - which they did in their 100's and " Do The Funky Chicken " ! ) ; and finishing with the eventual decline of Stax .
As I said , the whole programme was a gem ; if you did not see it , and have access to the ' Community Channel ' on Sky , keep an eye out for it , as no doubt it will be shown again in the near future . You will not be disappointed .
