Vanguards – Gott’A have love – Lamp 92 Ex+ £300 HOLD
Sits in the shadow of their biggie “Good times, bad times” and the under the radar rarity “Before you take another step girl”. This Herb Miller owned, Bloomington, Indianapolis label was relatively short lived, but a 5-6 year operation threw up not only a host of Vanguards tracks, but also the Pearls “Shooting high”, Moonlighters “Lonely baby” “More than I can stand”, the latter co-written by Bobby Womack and the Ebony Rhythm Band funk monster “Soul heart transplant”.
Given that “Take another step” is only known for a handful of copies, and not generally catalogued I suspect there may be other releases on the label yet to surface. This excellent 70s dancer recorded in stereo boasts the usual Vanguards qualities, great lead, deep backing and superb instrument arrangement. Probably not as well known as it should be, but then it keeps good company as mentioned above.
