60’s Northern: Proper, Quality Tackle – Nae Pish! Bangers, clangers, chuggers and buggers; stompers, rompers, rumpers, pumpers and trumpers; heavy on the Stafford vibe with the odd, overlooked Wigan gem…
*ALL AT LEAST EX CONDITION UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED * PLEASE READ THE T&C’S AT THE BOTTOM*
1. The Chessmen – Why Can’t I Be Your Man/Nothing But You – Chess £35 ye olde classic but by jingo, Nothing But You is the gem side here, a gorgeous mid tempo that borrows heavily from The Temptations ‘It’s Growing’. Some surface scrathches on this side, vg++
*** SOLD *** 2. Top Shelf – No Second Thoughts / Give It Up – Lolo £30another fabbytastic double sider; great uptempo dancer, with a beautiful, sweet soul reworking of Jerry Butler’s ‘ Giving Up On Love’
3. The O’Jays – No Time For You – Imperial £80 rarer back issue of this classic, Pied Piper production. Beefier, dancier version of The Commands’ original on Dynamic; as legend has it, The Commands often supported when The O’Jays toured Texas, which was how the Philly boys were moved to cut their own version.
8. Marvin Smith – Love Ain’t Nothing But Pain / I Want – Brunswick £20 cracking double sider of big Carl Davis/Chicago productions. Note the botched drill hole attempt that eats into the centre – it looks odd but does not affect play.
*** SOLD *** 9. The Promatics – Sugar Pie – Jo Jo £25 yet another Northern dancer with that great ‘Time’s A Wasting’ backing track. On the rarer label with the blue text.
11. Carl Hall – I Don’t Want To Be Your Used To Be – Loma £45 big, bold, brassy pounder, with Carl doing that screaming-his-head-off-like-a-good-‘un thing he does so well!
***SOLD*** 12. The Dells – Inspiration – Chess £20 *single sided demo* big, loud, strings ‘n things stomper with Marvin Junior roaring away in fine style!
13. The Puzzles – I Need You / My Sweet Baby – Fatback £60 2 stonking sides of real, old skool Northern that seldom turns up. Unfortunately, both sides bear scuffs, surface scratches and that weird discolouration. VG+ and this is reflected in the price, but really, they sound much better.
