Hello and welcome to the first list of the new year!
No list last month makes for an extra meaty one this time around! A few standouts from each section below.
PM to reserve.
Modern Soul & Two Step 45’s – She Devil “Love dreams” (widely unknown and fab 2 step), Gil Scott-Heron UK only super indemander, Bliss “Stomp” (super rare on 7”), Trans-National Funk Co (super rare with alternative flipside “Brand new day”) plus a whole bunch of classic major label titles from artists like Breakwater, Bill Coday and David Ruffin ranging from £5 to £175.
Northern & Crossover 45’s – NS we have some killer dance tracks from Clara Hardy, Narvel Felts “Girl come back”, Sam Fletcher, George Wydell “From out of nowhere”, crossover ones Carol Anderson “Sad girl”, Pointer Sisters “Send him back” and Al Williams “The other side of your love” + many more.
Ballad/Deep/Sweet/Group Harmony on 45 – Herman Davis “Gotta be loved”, Johnny Gilliam on Bo-Mar (with killer NS flip), Berganees double header (loads of interest on the last copy), Tempos “I call it love” (superb take on the Manhattans track), Spiritual Harmonizers “God’s love” plus an array of great and cheaper ones.
Previously Unissued/Re-Issue 45’s – Superb previously unissued track such as Carla Thomas “I’ll never stop loving you”, Loreli “God and you” (female version of the Topics/Tropics/Ultimates track, with the Topics/Tropics version on the flip) and Chuck Brooks. High quality reissues of dead rare/expensive modern/xover classics from Timeless Legend, Tolbert, Kool Blues, Fluorescent Smogg and Patrinell Staten.
Last but not least there’s 12” and album sections. Where you’ll find classic titles from Eliminators, Brothers Unlimited, Blair and Barbara Lewis. Modern Soul & Two Step 45’s
She Devil – Love dreams – Charm City / VG+ / OFFERS (Killer, killer two step. Their rarer 45, and seen more copies of the Toast 45 on the same label. Hard one to price so taking offers on this one. Vinyl has some light marks, plays ok but not perfect, hear the actual copy in the video below.)
Trans-National Funk Co. – Brand new day / Funkafied – AMG / EX / OFFERS (Best thing on the label, and one of the rarest. Usually seen with an vocal take of “Funkafied” on the flip and with a red AMG logo rather than grey here. “Brand new day” is pure magic! Sounds stunning 3am on any dancefloor.)
Gil Scott-Heron – When you are who you are / Lady Day and John Coltrane – Philips / EX / £300 (Two amazing dancers from this classic artist. Clean UK original complete with company sleeve, WYRWUR-side only being exclusively on 45 on this release.)
David Ruffin – Still in love with you / I wanna be with you – Warner Brothers / EX / £175 (Two amazing modern soul dancefloor sides, uptempo dancer backed with his atmospheric midtempo classic. “Still in love with you” was a floor filler for me at the Liverpool Soul Weekender last year. One of the hardest major label issue copies to come by, “Still in love with you” not being on demos.)
Velvet Hammer – Happy / Party hardy – Soozi / EX / £150 (Classic feel good modern soul dancer backed with killer soulful Chicago disco. Flower label design copy.)
Ms Dolly Gilmore – My sweet man / No man like my man – Right On! / EX / £150 (Tough disco version with killer breaks etc. Flip is an island feel dancer. Very clean Canada original.)
Brief Encounter – Get a good feeling / In a very special way – Capitol / EX / £150 (Promo copy of this essential modern soul dancer. Flip is an overlooked ballad.)
Sun – I had a choice / Dance (Do what you wanna do) – Capitol / EX / £90 (Ultra classy slow dancer. Flip is great, soulful disco. Indemand 45 and issue only!)
Michelle Wiley – Feel good / I feel so at home – 20th Century / EX / £75 (Issue copy with both the modern soul dancer and the iconic two step classic.)
Donnell Pitman – Your love is dynamite – After Five / EX / £75 (Two step classic with backing by the Chi-Lites. Minty fresh copy complete with company sleeve.)
Future Flight – Hip-notic lady / Dues – Capitol / EX / £60 (Two best songs off the album on one issue only 45. Killer Lamont Dozier productions, one side two step, one side dancer. Clean copy complete with company sleeve.)
Willie Fisher – Put your lovin’ on me – Tigress / EX / £45 (Excellent and largely forgotten midtempo modern soul dancer. One to cool down the dancefloor with, but still keep all dancers. US promo, never seen an issue of this.)
Epicenter feat Sandra Feva – You can’t come up in here no more – Krisma / EX / £40 (Fantastic two step with vocals from the woman who could compete with Aretha Franklin.)
Ramp – Everybody loves the sunshine – Abc / VG+ / £35 (Roy Ayers classic that’s rare on 7 inch. Plays clean but has a few light scratches. With company sleeve.)
Cameo – Find my way – Chocolate City / EX / £5 (Classic modern soul, first release credit to The Players this is the second release before they found fame with their new group name.)
AWB – Work to do – Atlantic / EX / £5 (Great take of the Isley Bros song, pitch it -4 for great dancefloor results. As new copy complete with company sleeve.)
Delegation – Heartache No. 9 / Welcome to my world – Mercury / EX / £5 (Classic disco/modern backed with a great slowie. Ballad side has a tiny label tear. US copy complete with company sleeve.)
Narvel Felts – Girl come back – Renay / EX / £550 (Nice clean copy of this fantastic midtempo NS dancer. Flip might have some fans too, midtempo with hints of R&B and early Beatles.)
Sam Fletcher – I’d think it over – Tollie / EX / £375 (Classic! Clean white demo original with circled MR in the runout groove. Plays clean except for a couple of thuds just when the song is fading out.)
Carol Anderson – Sad girl – Fee / EX / £330 (As new original copy of this superb feel good dancer. Seldom seen now apart from the odd G condition copy turning up stateside. Don’t miss the great slowie on the flip.)
Betty Willis – Gone with the wind (Is my love) / Ain’t gonna do you no good – Mojo / VG- / £275 (Rare and great crossover version of the Rita & Tiaras biggie. Flip is superb midtempo soul. Vinyl is absolutely covered in light marks and scuffs. Label has light wear. Plays above grade, youtube-clip is made from the actual copy. Could be fixed to play more or less mint if you are willing to spend with one of the professional record restoration services out there.)
Pointer Sisters – Send him back – Atlantic / EX / £275 (Very clean guaranteed original copy of this Richard Caiton penned NS classic. As new copy complete with company sleeve.)
Whispers – It only hurts for a little while – Dore / VG / £275 (Wow! The amazing Whispers take on the backing track of Entertainers IV “Garden of eden”. And they make “Garden of eden” mediocre in comparison. Very rare white demo first press with label number 724, should be their rarest on the label. You do see more “Doctor Love” than this. Label has two X, vinyl light marks but plays well apart from a super quick cue burn just touching the intro. It’s vinyl so must have met a very crap needle at some point of it’s life.)
Sisters Love – Just a little misunderstanding – DCT acetate / EX / £175 (Unique disc alert! One off original acetate of their excellent, energetic take of the Contours classic. Was originally sourced from a California Motown execs office. Recorded in the same Mowest sessions as “Give me your love”, “Learning to trust my man”, “You’ve got to make choice” etc but was never released. Clip from actual copy below.)
Ebonies feat. Roy Williams – You got what I want / I’m not asking for much – Midwest / EX / £175 (Very clean copy of this storming group harmony crossover dancer that was played at Stafford. Flip is a nice slowie.)
George Wydell – From out of nowhere – Tangerine / VG+ / £150 (White demo copy of this fantastic northern midtempo dancer. There’s a scratch causing a few soft clicks in the outro.)
Marie Knight – You lie so well / A little too lonely – Musicor / EX / £150 (Great double header. Midtempo dancer with slight latin feel, amazing beat ballad on the flip. Both sides featuring Marie’s fantastic, powerful singing.)
Ja Neen Henry – Baby boy – Blue Rock / VG+ / £150 (Killer version! Such a powerful Detroit backing and one that will set any dancefloor busy. White vinyl demo, issues are styrene. Small sticker on label. Vinyl has a few light marks, plays clean.)
Monorays – Love / You’re no good – 20th Century Fox / VG / £150 (Superb early group dancer with R&B flip. White label promo, vinyl has some light marks but it plays well.)
Dorothy Williams – The well’s gone dry – Goldwax / VG+ / £100 (Classic R&B flavored NS, with such great vocals and dance beat. Vinyl has a few scuffs, plays well.)
Marva Broome – Mystifying mama / For all we know – Horse / EX/EX / £100 (Two superb jazzy soul sides, with Art Ensemble of Chicago. French original with clean picture sleeve.)

Mod Singers – I’m gonna change your mind – Savern / EX / £75 (Awesome and somewhat quirky Chicago crossover. Rare one and especially tricky to find in this clean condition.)
Donny Mann – Treat me like a stranger / No more childs play – Avalanche / EX / £70 (Super classy atmospheric Chicago crossover, flip is nice too. Very hard to find in clean condition.)
Deena Johnson – I’m a sad girl / I’ll never let you down – Simpson / EX / £40 (White demo of this classic NS dancer. Flip is a great midtempo dancer, this side has two X on the label.)
Kim Tamango – Not by bread alone / (Can’t wait until) Tomorrow – Firebird / EX / £35 (Clean copy of this classy double header. One side funky soul that became a firm classic after it’s inclusion on the highly influential Soul Spectrum comp. Flip is a lovely slowie.)
Companions – Help a lonely guy / Be yourself – General American / EX / £35 (White label promo of this excellent double header. Two Chicago styled group harmony midtempo dancers. “Be yourself” side has a number and a X written on label.)
Brenda Parker – My baby lovs me / Get ready – Rare Bird / EX / £25 (Excellent crossover dancer, the bass line is killing it. Raw, gritty and cool take of the Temptations classic on the flip)
Shirley Wahls – It ain’t there no more / We’ll be together – Smash / EX / £15 (Overlooked but great crossover double header. White demo, one side has a faint, partial stain.)
Little Joe Mixon – What you see is what you get – Duo / VG+ / £10 (Nice slice of funky Chicago soul. Record has a few sleeve marks not affecting play.)

Starvue – Upward bound – VG+/EX / £150 (Classic 1980 Chicago release filled with goodies. “Put the bs aside”, “You and me”, “Love affair” and the classic “Body fusion”. Vinyl is clean apart from a cluster of very light marks on the last two tracks on the A-side, plays through nicely but not perfect.)
